    Askeladd being half Welsh is actually a massive plot twist that re-contextualises a lot of of his past actions. Remember episode 10 when he was lamenting the fall of the Roman Empire? Remember his duel with Thors? He swore on both his father's name Olaf, and on the name of Artorius, but he only kept one of the promises...
    "Is the blood of Artorius stronger than the blood of the Danes?"
    And that's the central conflict of his character. Will he work to save Wales like he says? Or is he just a selfish Viking at heart?

    Most of the time, when Askeladd swears an oath, he does it in the name of Odin, or by the name of his father, Olaf. In episode 4, after Thors is shot by arrows, Askeladd promises to withdraw his troops and let them go "In the name of my ancestor Artorius". IIRC, it's the only time he does so.

    4:50 ah, once again we see Bjorn displaying that he's a thinking man. I'm not going to say his talents are wasted as a berserker, but his other qualities definitely seem undervalued.
    9:10 this is so brilliantly done. just as you're getting absolutely sick to death of Canute's delicacy, you get a moment like this. we've gotten used to Thorfinn, and how hyper capable he is, but here, Ragnar is treating Canute like a child. he's clearly known him throughout his childhood, and actually... it would be more normal for both Canute and Thorfinn to still be seen, at least somewhat, as children. remember Ari? back when we last saw him, he might've even been older than Thorfinn and Canute are now. he was trying his best, but he was young, and it put him in danger. he couldn't help his age, or lack of life experience, and Thors still felt responsible for protecting him from his own naivety.
    what adult wouldn't want to protect a child from pain and strife, if they could? and in the same way that a neglected, mocked, and abused kid can turn out a bit wrong like Thorfinn, a child of an oppressive and overbearing type of abusive environment can turn out a bit wrong like Canute. the palace is politically volatile, and Canute has largely been treated as a bargaining chip by most other people... he's withdrawn, and scared. he follows directions, and lacks fortitude and confidence in himself.
    and truly, Ragnar does annoyingly lack tact! he seems extremely entitled, but he's also used to being a bit of a guard dog for this kid. I think he's the type of man who would prefer to live in an honest and straightforward way... he'd be better at that. but he's been given a den of vipers to work with. he's in circumstances that don't befit a man like him. so he's coping by snapping at anything that moves. in contrast to many of the exceptionally able people we've watched so far... Ragnar really doesn't seem like he's cut out for this, or like he'd choose it if he had the power to choose at all. and how nerve wracking it must be, to try and protect someone so delicate, surrounded by a world as rough as this. especially when the necessary task isn't your strong area, and you know it.
    as a side note, a lot of the physical resemblances between characters in Vinland Saga aren't indications of any potential blood relations... the show is pretty good about making relevant literal information obvious when it has something it wants you to know.
    but yeah, we're finally getting this information... Askeladd's mother was a Welsh woman named Lydia, her bloodline was that of the legendary Artorius, she was taken as a concubine by Askeladd's father, Olaf, who was a Dane, and then Olaf kept Lydia in the stables later on. and when Askeladd was 14, he brought Lydia back to Wales... and in the flashback, her condition seems exceptionally poor.
    at this point, I want to draw our attention back to episode 8, and particularly to the slave in that episode, Hordaland. while in a literal sense she isn't related to any characters we know at all, she was a girl with fair skin, blue eyes, and long, fine blonde hair. she came from a noble family who fell to ruin when their land was invaded, which led to her enslavement... so basically, in her appearance and circumstances she bears a large resemblance to Lydia.
    as he watches her getting beaten by her master at dinner, Askeladd says: "look. it's terrible. a guy who's a slave to money holds a whip, and pretends to be the master of the slave he bought with his money. he just doesn't realize it himself. everyone is a slave to something."
    what are we to assume Askeladd is beholden to? how far is he willing to go? we may just be witnessing the payoff to the longest con of his life, if all he's said is sincere. how much has he sacrificed in order to get here, and what more is he willing to do? will the blood of Artorius outweigh the blood of the Danes?
    EDIT: also, good call not watching this OP right now. there's like... possible spoilers if you're paying too close attention to the visuals. just skip this one til you're done with the season. the next two OPs shouldn't be a problem.

    22:40 If you go back to episode five there is a shot when Thorfinn is challenging Askellad for the first time where he looks a lot like Thor's (especially his eyes). I think him not resembling Thor's as much right now is a meta visual thing that shows as Thorfinn strays from his fathers ideals the less he resembles him. That being said there are a ton of parallels between Thorfinn and Askellad, so there resemblance is also very intentional.

    The main difference between Young Askeladd and Thorfinn is that Askeladd has blue eyes while Thorfinn got his brown eyes from Thors (yknow, dark eyes are dominant genes and all that).
    They do look a lot alike but then again this is an anime and there's only so much difference you can show within a certain art style.

    • @kamuyking551
      @kamuyking551 4 місяці тому +6

      I would also say there's thematic reason for the series to try and cause the audience to see parallels between Thorfinn and young Askeladd, but that's a conversation for later on. I will say that I love how this anime ages characters. even if you go back to episode 4 and look at Askeladd back then, you can see that his hairline has receded a little since then... he does look older now. but even when he's younger, you can see that his hair still parts in the middle, which is consistent with the shape it takes when it gets cut shorter later in his life. and he's got the same brow and eye shape... when you get to looking at the little details, this aspect is really well done!

    • @laurainathunderstorm
      @laurainathunderstorm 4 місяці тому +2

      @@kamuyking551 yes! I really like the consistency the art has with the storytelling, it's one of the things I'm glad they pay attention to, even later SPOILERS FOR EP 22
      the similarities between Olaf and present day Askeladd are massive! They look so much alike and Askeladd's dialogue during his introduction scene being "he was a Viking like those you'd find anywhere" or something along those lines while we see a man almost identical to him on screen is really telling.
      In short, there's always new reasons to keep liking Vinland Saga more and more!

    • @kamuyking551
      @kamuyking551 4 місяці тому +2

      @@laurainathunderstorm that's also true, and an excellent point.
      [SPOILERS AHEAD]
      it's also cool how, not only do you have young Askeladd's striking resemblance to Thorfinn, which kind of aids in the later realization that Askeladd really has turned into his father, in relation to Thorfinn, and Askeladd hated that man enough to kill him... loaded stuff...
      but also, because he's a kid, young Askeladd has softer features... and with his hair and eye color, he actually resembles Lydia a bit more in his youth. he grows into his Olaf features. it's such excellent visual storytelling, I can't wait to get to Askeladd's backstory.

    Luke really needs to start doing some single season anime. People need to start recommending them. Maybe consider recommending a pair of single season anime. Luke could do them back to back. So this would make it easier for him to plan and schedule. Plus Luke would get more anime titles under his belt. Think of all the great single season anime that exist. It's reasonable for Luke to split up his reaction time to allow for single season anime.
    But this will never happen if the community doesn't ask for it! Let the single season anime drought end! Do your part request single season anime. Be open to other peoples single season requests. After all, it's better to get Luke to react to ANY single season at this point. Consider pairing your single season anime. Maybe consider a theme and recommend a pair from that theme.
    If you want Luke to react to some single season anime please consider liking this post! Numbers matter to Luke. He will respond if enough of us ask!

There are, of course, a few characters who remain present -largely from beginning to end- but many more die and more get introduced throughout (including parent-child transitions). I thought the show did it quite well, but your comment on how you feel you've never seen a show do it well indicates you might feel differently. So I just want to gush a bit about the ending, Drown by Milet. Sorry if I ramble a bit. So I will find that when there's an anime I really really like and want to continue once the anime is done, I'll go and continue with the manga. Probably pretty relatable for a number of people. I'm in the process of catching up in the manga for Frieren and Heavenly Delusion, right now, for example.
    But sometimes, I'm really confident I will love something to the point I will wait to watch the anime until I'm caught up enough on the manga that I think the season will get up to. Vinland Saga was one that I read first, and of course I hit a point where I KNEW that the season would almost have to end there. One of the craziest moments in any series out there. So then I started the anime, it was really well done, and then I reached the end of this episode, and heard the ending. I got chills, because I knew, in that moment, that I was right about when it would end and this ended was absolutely perfectly fitting for it. River as the Season 2 OP is also perfect the follow it, by the way. But anyway, sure enough, the final episode went just as perfectly as I'd hoped, and then, just as I was anticipating, that ending, those first lines, came in like a haunting whisper. It was absolute cinema. In a handful of episodes, you will see just how fitting this ending is for what happens, and I hope you love every second of it.
