In actuality, Askeladd was being compassionate/kind, as most of the entire townsfolk were going to starve to death, even if Askeladd and his mercenaries were no where near this small town at all
Askeladd saw that their food and its quality, wasn't able to support most of the townspeople, but it could be a bit of energy for his men, and so, Askeladd saw the quick death from having the towns folk killed by his men as less suffering than them slowly dying horribly from starvation (and worse, in their dying starvation, they're desperate, they'd attack and kill each other, as they try to steal the insufficient food from each other, even possibly cannibalizing each other, in an attempt to survive)
if it wasn't winter and a blizzard, it seemed like Askeladd was just going to take them as prisoners with his men, likely to maybe sell them off as slaves, but that just wasn't possible, as there was no food for him to do that, due to it being winter and in the middle of a blizzard

They had food for 50 grown men to last them and was only 63 townspeople they themself said that they even could survive on half of the food but Askelsads 104 men needed all the food that is why he had to kill them for them to not suffer or contact surrounding villages.

@@blackcid well, not really the worst. Pretty much the entire world lived by "Kill or be killed" rule back then. Vikings werent special on that matter, they were just a bit more effective than the others. Besides, raiding and war is cool, but vikings still grew crops and raised animals during off-season, and many of ruling dynasties in Europe are basically established by vikings. Like, the entire Cnut's line is pretty much a viking dynasty.

This show has never been about glorifying violence. The whole show has always been about the horrors of war and violence. It is a brutal episode for sure, and I don't fault you at all for how you feel about it. In a way, I think the brutality of it is important because as you said, you were really starting to love Askeladd and his band of men, even though they do terrible things. It hasn't been since episode 5 that we really got the full sense of how evil they can be. It's a jarring reality check. You seemed pretty bummed out, but try to remember that there is a purpose behind what they are showing you. It's not just for shock factor.
Yeah, too many series do things like this as a shock factor. But this is actually trying to create a realization and understanding in the viewer.

Very true. If you end up getting bummed about it, it's because you are really exposed to how bad things were. Askeladd and his crew are self-serving vikings. They kill, they rape, they torture, they plunder. This episode basically exists to bum you out like that in regard to how terrible violence like this is. The kid in you wants to think "yeah, cool! Battle! War!" Just like the kids in the first few episodes, but the reality of war is far different.

this series is important for understanding what the author wants to convey to us, the audience, and this is important for revealing Askelades as a person, since he is a very ambiguous character and your opinion about him will constantly change. Yes, the episode is very dark, but it is important for the development of the story. Please don't drop!
Wow, having a family must really make episodes like this hit differently. I'm going to assume he's not really quitting because that'd be really sad.
This series isn't meant to be torture p**n. Yukimura has kids of his own and, as a reminder, Thors himself said his thoughts on war changed after he had his daughter. The reaction GOT had for this episode has got to be the absolute perfect reaction the mangaka would hope for. Pure, absolute disgust.
Please continue. It will be 100% worth it as the messaging of this masterpiece becomes more clear
On the mention of the details in the hands: the mangaka of VS, Yukimura, has stated something to the degree of (paraphrasing): "After the face, the hands are the most expressive part of the human body"
There's a lot of cool meticulous details drawn into the hands in many parts of this series
100% People should be paying attention to all the hand shots in this anime. The mangaka, and animators in respect of that, put a LIFE into those hands. You can see how hard they worked. Broken nails, rough skin, cracked knuckles, calloused palms where the tools rubbed.
100%!! Even cannibalistic tribes have been known to remove the hands of who they eat. There's something deeply humanizing in hands.
We as an audience get far too relaxed and comfortable with the characters we travel with up to this point. We feel like Askelad is almost like an uncle to Thorfinn and the crew are like his older brothers. We mostly just see them fighting which feels acceptable because they are soldiers and when they raid towns they tend to only show the fire and looting after. This episode brings it back to reality. These men are not cool. These men are not people to look up to. These men are animals and monsters and we need to keep that reality in our minds moving forward
This was an intense reaction to watch. You could feel Luke's unease and sadness the entire time. Knowing it hits him even harder due to having a family with young children too. These types of episodes are so real they leave a strong impact.
Also what you described about religion is the EXACT same boat I am in. I rebelled against it when I was younger but the older I get the more I see the value it has for society. The happiest people I see tend to have some faith-based religion at the core and I am truly envious of their ability to have faith. Unfortunately, I am too much of a realist to have genuine faith and am stuck in an agnostic belief system just hoping there is something greater.
There's are many realistic and even pessimist people that believe in God, to have faith is not the same as pretend or have a positive thinking. Faith is to wait and trust, however, you will only understand when you experience it.
I use to be in that same boat, was agnostic for a long time. What changed for me personally was because I am very much into astronomy and physics and such. The more I learned the more I actually found myself convinced of God. Us being here by chance, is inconceivably small, and that’s an understatement. I respect everyone’s beliefs but that is the truth and it is one of the reasons that give me faith. Although when it comes to the story of Jesus, I can’t say there is the same level of evidence. However there is some valid evidence and not much contradictory evidence as far as I’m aware, that he was who he’s claimed to be. I simply am just moved by his story and to think that he still cares so much for us after everything is enough for me. Everyone is different, but if you really want to know him, you will. Having faith does not have to mean blind faith.
Man, when the wind picks up after the order to kill is given. The very air is screaming.
for this episode, I want to copy over something I'd already written about this episode, as there's very little else I'd want to say:
I think the really severely important thing about this episode, is the theme of the conceptualization of love from different angles.
when the priest is trying to explain it to the brothers (Atli and Torgrim), you can tell that the priest is trying to describe something more complicated than he knows how to say, and more complicated than they know how to feel. for our purposes in the story now, I think Thors resonated because he was acting with this understanding. basically, he saw Askeladd's men, destructive as he understood them to be, and still felt like killing them was wrong. their lives are experienced by them, with as much importance as his life is experienced by him. he has no right to rob them of that.
and I think that empathetic base lays the groundwork for this type of "love" that is broader than personally knowing someone. it's imagining someone with just as much depth as you feel within yourself. I mean... Thors even used to kill on a similar scale to how they do. if he wants to believe that he himself can be reformed, then he also has to acknowledge the potential of these men. and if you've actually, truly considered this... then you should feel that their death would be a tragedy. if not to you, then at least to them, from their perspective... or to someone, somewhere. it takes a different type of sentiment to make a goal out of saving people who wouldn't save you.
but when Askeladd's men decimate the village in this episode... we see the other side of that coin. Askeladd's men can't understand that sentiment. they may not even want to, given how bad they _should_ feel about what they've done. there are people who have a right to hate them, and curse their name. they create victims of their violence on the regular. and when you take a step back, you have to wonder... do they understand what it is to love at all? do they know, like, _really_ know, what it would feel like to fear losing someone, or something? do they understand what they're robbing from people?
where does your life's joy come from when your goal is superiority, to the detriment of anyone who encounters you? whatever positive qualities you think love gives to a person... they probably can't experience that in full. which is why arguments in favor of love aren't compelling to them.
but it goes even further. the girl who stole the ring is so afraid of divine punishment, even for something as minor as taking a piece of jewelry. and you can understand her motives... she's young, and poor, and probably has never laid her hands on anything this nice before in her life. she doesn't deserve to go to hell for it, but she doesn't know that. she's terrified of retribution. and it's to the extent that she's actually relieved to see men who are truly evil... because she understands that her small misdeed is nothing in comparison to them.
but that's how terrifying retribution can be as a concept. what are you owed for your crimes? what is the purpose of punishment... what effects will it truly produce?
Thorfinn has been self flagellating for failing to kill a man who wronged him. is that valuable?
who deserves love, and what does it even mean to give it to them, on a broad scale? is it possible to show compassion to people who do evil things, and probably don't even understand love enough to feel it at all? could they feel that, with the right intervention? or is their cruelty a foregone conclusion, now and forever?
what about Thors. he got out. was he doing something right? if so... what was that?
I think we are, once again, confronted with Askeladd, his men, and their nature, because this is the conundrum that you have to engage with when you think of the phrase "you have no enemies" and try to reconcile it with the world. even if this one girl from the village were to forgive Askeladd for killing everyone... Askeladd wouldn't care. he'd move on, and his whole crew would keep doing this, over and over, until someone got angry enough to hate him in a way that matters. that's what Thorfinn is.
and Askeladd has no right to say that he doesn't deserve it. he made sure that this would happen someday... his actions made it inevitable. you can't live like that without making someone hate you. these men are the farthest from love that they could ever be, and they've done this to themselves, unflinchingly. they might not even understand why they shouldn't. but they had a choice, at every step along the way. even now, they could still choose to live better than this.

Again, wonderful analysis. I put my own thoughts on this episode as well, but it was much less character evaluation and much more "things I realized while watching this episode".
This episode really feels like, "You've been rooting for them, right? Let me remind you of their true nature."
It makes you wonder how involved Thorfinn has been with things like this, too; I personally imagine he's participated once and learned to make himself scarce since. It's one thing to kill someone trying to kill you, it's another to kill someone who can't fight back; given that Thorfinn hates battle, I can't imagine how he feels about moments like this. Speaking of which, did we even see him this episode? I think his absence is very telling as well, if we didn't.
That single shot of Canute and the priest trying to warn the villagers hurt, too. This episode pulled no punches.

also, I think Thorfinn's "one participation" so to speak, was with that woman and her daughter in episode 6. but also, it was at that point that he kind of renounced empathy... that sigh, and those dead eyes, kind of signal that he took the woman's feelings, and consciously chose to put the emotion of it in with the rest of his pain and shame. somewhere where it couldn't get in his way.
I could see Thorfinn maybe going off on his own while Askeladd and the guys do their thing most times, at least when it's none of his business. but I also get the impression that, if Askeladd had a purpose for Thorfinn, such as scouting, or cornering people, he'd probably still use him via the same method as always. I don't think Thorfinn would actually raise his blade to kill a child younger than himself... it feels like we would've been shown that, if he'd fallen that far. but that only barely makes him less complicit.
still... I do think it meant something that he was absent this episode. this is Askeladd's moment to be horrible, through and through. even if Thorfinn is around, and not doing anything about this, that's on Askeladd too. Askeladd raised him with the expectation that Thorfinn can't beat him, or stop him, or even decide his own actions for himself. Askeladd dictates what Thorfinn does by setting his conditions for success.
in general, this is the messy part of abusers raising kids. they teach the child apathy to all their worst traits, and specifically show them that those traits are power, so emulating that stuff becomes a way out of victimhood. it's hard to tell when a kid becomes old enough to carry full accountability for their own actions. kids with his sorts of issues don't just pop up out of nowhere, they're made.
and Thorfinn is especially difficult because we know how this happened, and why it happened, and if anyone was going to divert him, or intervene in some way, it would've been during episode 6. but the instability of Thorfinn's abusive environment follows him... or rather, he sticks to it. Thorfinn's psychology is a very self harming one at this point, even if he wouldn't know that himself. it's really impossible to say how any of this could've gone differently for him.
and Canute's learned helplessness is much the same way. watching the priest try to warn the villagers and fail to make an impact on the situation might've only contributed to his silence.
You should absolutely stick with it. This *is* horrible, and it *is* brutal. To say things in the least spoilery way possible, Thors has been warning us about this since episode 1. This is where we finally start to feel it. And it pays off later.
You have no enemies. There is no one you need to hurt.
The whole point in Vinland saga is the showcase what war was really like.
The author takes stories of what happened and doesn’t sugarcoat it. It puts you in the perspective of every single person living at that time. Other stories will make them seem like the good guys like pirates of the Caribbean. Vinland makes you think about everyone. Even the helpless.
Think of Christopher Columbus… people worship him built statues of him and so many “heroes”
They were like all the Vikings in Vinland Saga. They did atrocious things.
also, I will say that for as abhorrent as the behavior is from Askeladd and his crew during this episode, it respects the cost of your time here, and utilizes these events very well in the future plot. this wasn't for nothing. thematically, this episode does so much to build up the overall message that the series is trying to convey. for however dark the depths of these lows may get, please know that this is not where the writing intends to leave you. trust in this. we didn't ask you to watch Vinland Saga just to lead you here for nothing.

Torgrim was on the ship when Thors was killed, and he recognizes Thorfinn as Thors' son, so I don't think he actually doesn't know or has forgotten Thors' name.

This isn't the first time we've seen them plunder a village. For example, the episode with the woman who took care of Thorffin for a while. So I don't know why you're so shocked. I know that cruelty was shown in much more detail in this episode, but it's not like they were good guys before
The presentation in this episode is what makes it so shocking and leaves an impact on the viewer. His reaction to this was the intended purpose of it. Lots of bad things happen but it is easier to not be affected by them depending on how we are exposed to them.

I understand if you want to drop it this episode was brutal, but be patient I think you'll really enjoy season 2 at least finish season 1 before deciding. You should also do a full reaction to this opening and ending, Man with a mission "Dark Crow" and Milet "Drown"
9:24 it's the same with Norway in the middle to the south there's rarely any snow usually only a few days if it settles. We had a lot this year though it started snowing in November, then it settled throughout December and stayed until February. You said once every 4 years for a big snowfall seems about right, there's a lot of snow in northern Norway though especially past the artic circle.
Askeladd has a Machiavellian character. He'll do anything for the greater good, the greater good being having his beloved country, Wales, prosper under any circumstance!

Honestly, my brother refused to watch Vinland after this episode. My niece did watch, and she agreed with me that it was worth it. This anime is worth it, trust me. Your feelings for the characters right now is exactly what the author intended.
So brutal and hard it might be everything still has a purpose. No one said this will be a lighthearted story but its a philosophical rodeo of feelings and actions. Is it ugly, unfair and horrfiffc? Yes! but its also a good story about so many aspects of life itself. Please keep watching Vinland Saga.
Oh boy... the village episode. Once in a while, Vinland saga reminds us how fucking dark it can be...and I can't blame you for being drained, that IS dark....as fantastically well written askeladd is, so far he's like tied with thorkell for the most evil character...and he might be one of the most "human" out of the main characters we've met, which is concerning 💀
I wouldn't call Thorkell evil. He is literally just in it for the fight, he doesn't create strife, he's just a force of nature. The king, Floki and such are much more sinister.

I think what set Vinland saga apart from other shows and there brutally is Vinland saga and s grounded you can see it happening without a question of a doubt you can’t brush it off with “it’s only an anime” coz of how real it is about the slaughter that happens and that why personally I love it I respect artist that don’t pull the punches in there stories and really give you the gut punch sure it’s upsetting but that’s apart of the journey. Love your reaction as always and hope you continue as as brutally as this show can be the story telling is fantastic and worth finishing ❤

what a cold episode.. I had a similar reaction to it when I first saw it years ago. maybe now that've seen it ive come to appreciate it in different way. we have seen violence in Vinland since episode one but this is the first time that its done for survival. Im sure askleadd and his group would be dead in that storm if they hadn't found that town. What's soo shocking is how casually everything takes place... We can't even fathom making those kinds of decisions

The priest isn’t just acting weird, he is having an epiphany. This is important for later.
23:40 I think killing villagers was mercy. If they left them alive with so little food every single villager would struggle and starve to death. That would be way more horrible. Of course it would be best if Askeladd's group didn't pillage, but we know history is not that nice.

For some reason i didnt remember the brutality of this episode just as much as i did the scene with the "crazy" priest.
There was such magical meaning behind that scene for me
I remember sitting back in my chair back when I first watched this and being amazed at how this was crafted.
It makes you question god and relegion in very subtle ways like the one in the family who stole was the one who was saved or is being in heaven really salvation while she was left to suffer alone....
This epi is so heavy and makes you think so much... really a hard watch.
My favorite episode of the season they really adapted it so well.

That was a good, honest reaction, Respect for it! Now...a small note: Vinland Saga is brutal, it's grandiose, it's thought-provoking, it's horrifying, it's going places you'd never expect...and yes, this is how history was and is, even today. I'm not saying that to make light of it, because while I felt ever so sad and heatbroken reading the manga (and it is even more graphic in some ways), I believe that this story hits as hard as it does precisely because it doesn't shy away from some of the darker sides of history and humanity. It's not a sweet, gentle journey, but it is one worth following in the end...at least I think so. (Oh and btw Luke, I agree with your thoughts on religiousness, it was well formulated!)

I remember watching this episode myself for the first time and I guess my face looked similar to yours, also was considering dropping the series... I have small kids on my own and can't imagine sth like this may ever happen to them. This show can shake us completely. But I must tell you that the outcome of some after-thoughts gave a really positive change in me, I became kinder for the closest people for example. Not to mention the message of the whole series: never found anything even close to it, the story is worth following! You'll understand everything in some time, I promise
I've always found it interesting to think about how differently we treat civilians compared to soldiers. It's not as if the soldiers that are just defending their homes when the vikings attack deserve to die any more than civilians do, yet scenes like the one in this episode where 50 civilians are killed, are still far more shocking then when we see thrice as many soldiers killed.
This episode smacked everyone in the face, and reminded them that "Oh. We are following the Bad Guys."
Especially after just starting to like the vikings like the 2 Brothers or Bjorn.
Oh Luke it makes me so sad to see you like this. This episode broke me too but I can tell you season 2 brings a whole new perspective to the show and I know you will love it. It has brutality too but characters evolved (and I cannot tell more because I'm already at the border of spoiling you).

I know you're so genuine, so devoted to your children so I was actually afraid this episode hurts your feelings and it got even worse for you than I even thought... and unfortunately it is very realistic... the thought behind is it's either them or us... which is the reasoning of war and that's why I'm a real anti-war person. There will never be a good justification for war for me because war makes humans showing their most evil sides. Even if once again looking at things realistically, they needed food. They had no other solutions than stealing. They would have let this family alive with no food this family it would have been worse than any torture for them. And the other way around? Not stealing them. Then the torture would have been for Askeladd's people...and you would argue "yes but it was THEIR food" yes I agree. What about the solution half-half? Both side would not survived or only few of them and it would have been the most terrible solution... in that situation and anything related to survival, the realistic truth is moral no longer exists.
When I saw this episode for the first time I was saying "I would have prefered killing myself than ruining them" but in the end i would have let my men taking the hard decision and no matter their choice the issue would have been terrible + I would have died as a coward who let people having blood on their hands instead of me while being their chief? Yes this situation was so well depicted and no word is strong enough to describe the terror of this scene.

Forgot how brutal this episode is. Something worth keeping in mind is that Askelaad isn't a good guy or a villain, but he is brutally pragmatic - if he hadn't killed them they would've probably starved, if he hadn't taken all the food, his own men would've starved, or more likely, rebelled against him to kill them anyway.

This is reminder what kind of world they habited. If you stop this series because of this reason then you will never be able to experience the point author is trying to make with everything happening in season 1 and especially in season 2 and onwards.
There will be point with showing all the violence, raiding, war in future. If you can just keep going. This is all build up for message that author wants to convey.

The goal of atheism is not "ruining" belief of someone else. I'm perfectly fine with other people believing what they want. I wish my relatives Happy Easter and give my friends Christmas gifts. But I don't feel that it's right for *myself* to believe in any kind of supernatural force and/or being. I had considered agnosticism, too, but to me it feels way too vague to describe what I believe in. I choose to believe in humans, in our own ingenuity and morality, which does not require any God or gods to exist. There are people that try to force their views upon others both among atheists and among believers or any religion, but most of us (on either side of the fence) are just trying to live our life the best we can.
I'm the same way. My atheism to me is just me not believing in a higher force or Gods. As long as religious people don't try to force their beliefs on me, I'm chill with people who are religious.

As an Atheist, I would say you can look at the effect religion has on society as a whole. Just look at the situation in the US. Rejection of Science, women's right, bigotry, etc. Cool for people if beliving in a god gives them butterfly in their stomach or give them hope and shit, but it is ultimately a selfish belief that is not based on reality. Sure. people have the right to believe what they want, but don't you think we also have a responsability to others and should thus aim to have beliefs that match reality and not selfishly delude ourselves?
Also I'm not trying to make other stop believing by saying I'm an Atheist. I'm asserting my honest position as I see it. If my position makes religious people doubt, that's on them.
You only focus on the negatives without looking at the broader picture on all the positives it has brought to society. Maybe one day you will see the value of it instead of hyperfocusing on the things you don't like about it. I was in that same boat when I was younger too. But I would take a society of people with belief systems over atheist nihilism any day, otherwise what is the point in anything?

On the contrary, recognition of the fact that the meaning of existence is most likely out of our reach and that we are left to choose our own meaning is, I find, a much more honest and dignified existence. I am agnostic now and know I could never turn to faith honestly and it would be more of a logical cope for me to try. But what I have learned being old enough to grow up when religion was going strong in society is a lot(myself included) of people who become atheists believe because they have moral and value systems in place without religion that there is no need for it. What I was naive to was the fact I had religion around me and through my parents at a young age and lived at a time where these things were promoted in everything. I was naive to think people naturally have such traits instead of them being developed during youth through teachings and influence of them. People are more selfish and lacking integrity the older I get and I feel it is due to society backing away from such things and newer parents not raising their kids as their parents had raised them with religious values.
Much like so many people only follow laws out of fear of getting in trouble from authority... Religion is kind of that mindset but on a larger scale to help keep people being decent. Otherwise people will just do as they please as shown when Askeladd and his crew slaughtered a village with no concerns. I think Vinland Saga tries to show that God won't intervene/help but also what those without the fear of God will do.

It's a condescending self fulfilling prophecy where of course you the smart educated guy doesn't need it, but the dumb masses do. Please don't give up on Vinland Saga, there's a whole lot you can learn from watching it, and so many awesome moments to look forward to in future episodes, although there are a few that are sad like this one, but a different story to it. It will be well worth watching it all in the end!
This scene is one of the best scenes in anime imo. And it is a extremely important buildup for the overarching message of Vinland saga which is probably the most important message which can be given in these times. It is heartbreaking and horrific, but it is a very important part. I wont say the message right yet because that message wont be as clear now as later
Vinland Saga raised a number of religious questions for me. I was the same way as you going into it, and Thorfinn's journey helped spark my interest in religion and Christianity. Hope you find something to have faith in or at least a solid set of values to help raise the kids.

This is one of the darkest episodes of the series, imo. There's a lot to go over.
First, this is when my perception of Askeladd became much clearer. I'd had the idea of him as a good man who does bad things sometimes, but then it hit me that this was the standard for him. He is not a good character by a long shot, and neither are the men who follow him. Yet, you'll worry about them despite this moment--I know I did--and that's an instrument of Vinland Saga's message, in my opinion.
I also can't for sure say Askeladd was wrong. Evil? Most certainly, but if the village didn't have enough for 50 to survive the winter, would letting them live really be merciful? From Askeladd's perspective, it wouldn't be. They'd probably still die, only now there'd be the suffering of starvation to consider. It's not a decision I can forgive him for, and not one I could've made, but I understand the choice he made from a realistic perspective. I hate it, but I can't say I don't understand it.
Do you remember the slave Thors saved in Episode 1? I always think back to that during this episode, and to the priest's interest in Thors' final moments. I think Thors found the love the priest believes in, and in future episodes, that will become even clearer. I'm so curious about the reaction you will have when the priest finally manages to explain his idea of Love.
I'm also agnostic, and I wish I could devote myself to religion, much like you. It was validating to see someone express the same feelings I have regarding choosing to have faith.

I love the point you made about Thors saving the dying slave in episode 1... that's a really good connection to make here. the village clearly doesn't have enough food, but the father who was acting as the village spokesperson still would've settled for half, and the ability to strategize somehow.
maybe they could've gone to a neighboring town to ask for help, or maybe they could've butchered some of their livestock... or, perhaps, the adults would've prioritized the children, and some of the village would've passed away. there could've been dignity in letting them have a choice in the matter.
but Askeladd is operating more like Halfdan in terms of his mindset here. to him, these are poor and lowly peasant folk, whose lives seem like trash, and it's probably not going to get better for them. the children will grow to inherit their parents' lack of wealth, or ability to escape their lean circumstances... Anne will probably never arrive at a state where she could afford her ring legitimately. this is just the type of people they are, and he can't have expectations for them above their means.
but this also reminds me of the kid in episode 8, who came to talk to Askeladd during dinner, after Thorfinn lost his duel. at one point, as they're watching Hordaland get berated and beaten, the kid says that if he had to live without pride, he'd probably kill himself. Askeladd's point in that conversation, was to highlight how Thorfinn's pride blinded him, and the slave owner's pride is no more warranted than his slave's. he seems to hold the opposite opinion of what he displays in this village... a callous disregard for these people, because their lives are worth less than his goals.
it's interesting what happens after this... what Askeladd's hubris begets.
Probably unpopular opinion but i loved S2 a little more even with it not being as action packed, the character development probably one of the best in all the anime i’ve watched thus far. S1 so good though, viking stuff always gets me hyped lol

I completely agree. The character writing, philosophy and drama were more engaging to me in S2. I'll take deep rich character storytelling that's a slow burn over fast paced flashy light action any day.

I think I speak in the name of a lot of us when I say that we would totally understand if you need a break from this show, this episode was extremely brutal so we get it. But I still recommend you to finish it at some point, especially if it means you get to watch season 2.
Also, I understand that you would expect someone to stop this massacre, but if you take a step back this whole scene makes sense for every single character : the priest tried to warn the villagers but got shut down by vikings, Ragnar tried to reason with Askeladd who just ignored him (as he has been doing since they met), Thorfinn is used to it by now and doesn't care about anything because he is blinded by his hatred for Askeladd and his want for revenge, and Canute is still a scared 16 year old boy who doesn't like violence but is too scared of doing/saying something that will have international repercussions due to his royal status. Also, if he tried to say something here he would be speaking up against an armed adult, which even scarier and much more different than bantering with someone his age like he did last episode with Thorfinn.
As for Askeladd, he's a really complex character so we don't really understand if he actually enjoys doing stuff like that or if he just think it's the best strategical decision, but it's not the first time we've seen him and his men slaughter an entire village : the only difference is that this time we saw the attack from the victims' perspective and not the vikings' or Thorfinn's, therefore it was much more violent and traumatizing.
Anyway, hope you'll recover from this episode and we'll see you soon, but if you need time before getting back into it then we'll be there whenever you return ! ^^

Beginning of Ep2 "kill everyone, women & children too". Ep5. Ep6 "mother who save thorfinn and her villagers". All the same but didnt shown as detailed as this.
I like that we all loved Askelad and even rooted for him to win and get his way. But we forget he's not a hero, he's just as bad as all the other characters. But let me tell you this anime just gets better and better.
This episode is expertly placed just as we were beginning to get really invested in his character we are reminded who he is.

Yeah it's literally just a different translation, tresspasses was used in some countries where they had no concept for monetary "debt", since the concept is more "transgressions", the reason why debts is a good translation in England specifically, especially in the world of Vinalnd Saga, is because of the concept of slavery imo, that your debt can justifiably turn you into a slave, but the lord is merciful enough to forgive that debt, and since we are forgiven, we should forgive eachother
Basically Christians don't believe in slavery, back in the day this was more controversial but nowadays anyone who believes in slavery is socially ostracized
Also, want to point out, we have a higher standard of living nowadays, basically slavery isn't necessary to keep the economy going, if it were, regardless of what God wants, we would still be using it, imo, since it makes economical sense.
If the economy completely shut down and we lost all technology, it is likely slavery would return into the mainstream as a social norm, and believing slavery is actually not a good thing, like Thors, would make you seem like a weirdo

Not about Vinland saga but if you ever want to watch an anime that’s less popular but way better than anything I’ve ever seen (in my opinion) check out wandering son or hourou musuko. Directed by Mari odaka the same person who did toradora and ano Hana wandering son has the best depiction of the transgender experience I’ve ever seen in media
People in the comments are so spoilery. Don't drop it, it is one of the greats of story telling and this episode is an important part of that. There is a reason I've been reading the manga for a long ass time at this point and was so excited when the series got an anime annoucment.
Its because things like that happened in history and we know that evil is only one act away.

I get your point with the wish for a belief in a afterlife, but i do not really se religion overly positive. It has been used to turn people into people who cant think for themself and has been used for direct evil way to many times. Now i am not against people having personal religious beliefs though, it is just that i am against organized religion as it has been for human history. Has studied history for way to long to truly feel remorse for the religious complex the world has created to controll the masses.
The common factor is evil people. Evil people will use whatever they can to justify and abuse systems to control people and make them not think. Just look at modern politics, the same things are happening even though religion is on the decline.
I don't wanna call you out or something because its your opinion, but I think you misplayed your view on this episode. Worst thing you ever watched in a show huh? Forgot the rumbling killing 80% of humanity, where you could see baby's and people getting killed, was not more horrible? This is a masterpiece of an episode, hopefully you will get the message later of the episode. They let you see that war and slavery is horrible, that is the hole point of this episode, and the way they portray it is great storytelling. If its one anime that is a masterpiece in story telling its Vinland Saga. Of season 1, this is probably in my top 3 favorite episodes of the season.
Probably the reason why this is more shocking, because it just happened in 1 episode and the way they portrayed it with so mutch detail. Where the rumbling is pretty mutch a build up over seasons in AOT. And they really took there time to portray it. In AOT they spend more time on how to save the population, then how they got killed. Again no callout to you, but I think you need some time to understand this episode.
It is presentation. There wasn't an episode focusing on a family and their children only for the Rumbling to come and kill them at the end. It isn't as easy as writing down the stats on a paper. There is storytelling involved.

I'm sure you didn't watch aot as the first 15 minutes(equal to an episode) of that episode was purely focussed on 2 children and proceeds to show them get crushed to death as you watch them explode and get splattered. a lot more build up, more storytelling and more brutal
