You know what gets me the most? The fact Askeladd remained quiet about who really killed Thors. Floki was right there with them in that very room. Askeladd in his dying breath could've easily revealed to Thorfinn that Floki was the one who killed Thors yet he remained quiet. Why? It's because he didn't want Thorfinn to follow another cycle of revenge chasing after another man. He wanted Thorfinn to think that he killed his father's "real killer" so that he could move on with his life to become a better man and a true warrior. In his last moment, Askeladd revealed to us what kind of a man he really was (he's not a good man by any means as remember he ordered an entire village to be killed just to save supplies for the winter for his men but he's also not the worst man ever either, he's a flawed human being just like eveyone else in Vinland Saga).
The shot of thorfinn holding askeladd with the white background is similar to thors death scene with the white background, I think symbolizing askeladd being his father figure. Vinland saga is peak, great reaction guys
@@LuisSierra42 Right? Specially guys because the father and son relationship Askeladd and Thorfinn had (even if it was way too intense some times) is something every man can relate with. Heck I'm a guy and it still makes me tear up (like legit tears in my eyes) whenever I see Askeladd's death.
@@LuisSierra42 Literally only a few episodes have ever made me cry with this one being one of them. Even among them, it is the best if not for a few from AOT/BB/HxH.
I noticed one thing. Both Thors and Askeladd died a similar death. Thors sacrificed himself to save Thorfinn and his people. Askeladd did the same thing, sacrificing himself for the sake of saving his land and people. Askelad did not say a word to Thorfinn that it was Floki who gave the order to kill Thors, and in the end, when Thorfinn rushed to help Askeladd, he told him not to interfere, thereby protecting him from death. I think Askeladd is an ideal anti-hero who died like a hero in the end.
Good point. I didn't think of the parallels between Thors and Askelaad sacrificing themselves for things more important than their own lives. That's happened to Thorfinn twice now. His actions for seeking vengeance are an affront to what Thors' sacrifice actually stood for. Askelaad basically tells him that by saying your real battle is beyond this petty squabbling for vengeance and dominion between men and countries. A rightful tribute to your father would be to fulfill a dream he had for his family and his people.
13:57 Askeladd asking this question always gets me because him dying means thorfinn has no aim or meaning left to his life. I can't wait for you guys to catch up to season 2.
The fact that Askeladd's initial plan was thrown into the trash the moment Sweyn mentioned Wales, and that he still managed to pull off something this meaningful from scratch is fucking amazing: Saved Wales, saved and crowned Canute, and gave Thorfinn his much needed self-realization. One of the best realistically intelligent characters in manga & anime simply because he was selfless.
What is amazing, and some people missed, is that Askelad became the true savior Artorius that his mother told him about. He is the Artorius that saved Wales in the end.

What this shows does brilliantly is showing how we are often by-products of our environment. And in doing so doesn’t glorify it, but rather shows the understanding that sometimes people are forced to commit acts they don’t want to carry out. And how easy it is to accept those vile actions. What makes a person bad or evil, call it what you want. Is not the act itself but rather when we come to see it as okay and acceptable. Askeladd is the perfect example of a man who hated everything about the world he lived in, but knew he had to become like those he hated in order to get justice for his mother and people. Easily one of the best written characters of all time.

I know I am a year late, but I couldn't leave without sharing my thoughts. Stellar reaction!🎉🎉🎉🎉
I cried my eyes out in this ep, RIP Askeladd he did win at the end 😭💔 poor Thorfinn tho, to me he lost another father figure that gave him a purpose even tho it was all hate and for revenge and to me the last scene when Thorfinn throw the dagger it looked like he was trying to reach for Askeladd one more time and when he told Askeladd "we need to hurry and run away" I feel like he wanted to take Askeladd with him to Vinland with Lief 😭😭💔 love your reaction to S1 and can't wait for S2 with you guys, wishing Carlie a speedy recovery again ❤️
The finale episode is a masterpiece, deserves a standing ovation. The dropping of the blade is such a great symbolism. The OST, Somewhere Else, is by far my favorite OST. The scene where Thorfinn is being dragged away signifies him being dragged away from his past life and into a new one greatly parallels to an important character from S2 (during the last scenes of S2 Ep1). It would really be wonderful if you try to react to anime called "MONSTER", it's a mystery psychological thriller anime and both story writing and character writing are top-tier. Askeladd cares about Thorfinn and vice versa for sure. You can't live with someone for 11 years and not care. Their relationship is like Walt and Jesse. Askeladd cared but he had grand plans and those plans weighed more than his care for Thorfinn.
And this is just the prologue to the real story that Vinland Saga is trying to tell us. This wasn't a revenge story this was a story about someone trying to figure out who he is and what is his purpuse in life. Move forward and go to fight your “true battle". Become a true warrior just like your father was, son of Thors.
6:08 Probably not. The king would do nothing to Wales if he had Askeladd, especially since he knows how valuable the man is, and how inconsequential the petty kingdoms of Wales are.
As a character Askeladd is one of the best in anime but I just can feel sad for him his the antagonist of this season a very cruel and bad person I feel sad and cry for thorfinn at the end of the day askeladd was a father figure to thorfinn that's how tough his story is The man that killed his father through thorfinn eyes was the closest thing he had to a father figure until askeladd died he never realized
thorfinn has been with askeladd for 10 years and i don't know but it seems like thorfinn has some hidden concern for askeladd. and the fact that Thorfin has lost 2 of his dads makes me cried so much😭😭
Fun Fact: In the manga Thorfinn never gets arrested and the whole scene with Leif does not even happen XD I honestly don't know if I like the Anime version.... but I'm probably just biased because I first read the manga...

OK that's definetely exaggerating quite a bit lol. As a whole though, season 2 surpasses season 1 easily but this episode still stands at the top for me..
@@arwenlostlorn6569 nah ep 9 of s 2 clears this episode and the upcoming episodes are literally peak .
Have to agree. Episode 9… truly peak.
That's a bit of an exaggeration. This is still top 5 Vinland episodes
ahh yes time to see the kind and wholesome king canute will become and we’ll see just how much he loves his older brother 😁
Been waiting all day for this!
Askeladd cares about Thorfinn and vice versa for sure. You can't live with someone for 11 years and not care. Their relationship is like Walt and Jesse. Askeladd cared but he had grand plans and those plans weighed more than his care for Thorfinn.
It's so funny that Knud become "Canute" in the English sub. Is Knud that hard to say for Emglish speakers?
askleadd killing the king was red wedding type of moment
This ep is one of the highest rated eps of all time for a reason
VINLAND SAGA REALLY IS THE PEAK ANIME AND THIS IS JUST THE PROLOGUE
S2 is kinda off
@@ferhatmez3955 explain. And if you gonna say "its boring because of no action" Im gonna sack you
"Who are these randos?" Hey thats not nice lol, we just havent met them yet
After Thors died..
Askelad ironically become a father figure for Thorfinn..
And this is just the prologue to the real story that Vinland Saga is trying to tell us. This wasn't a revenge story this was a story about someone trying to figure out who he is and what is his purpuse in life. Move forward and go to fight your “true battle". Become a true warrior just like your father was, son of Thors.
oh wow, I haven't seen you guys for a while
Nah that's one of the best series of the year for me, can't wait for the reaction at the second season
10/10 reaction for a 10/10 episode
Askeladd's death still hits hard.
6:08 Probably not. The king would do nothing to Wales if he had Askeladd, especially since he knows how valuable the man is, and how inconsequential the petty kingdoms of Wales are.
Askeladd might not be my favorite character from season 1...but is for sure my favorite character from season 1 lol😅.
bro you good? tf you mean
Huh?
@@dungeonashu2987 hate to love him, love to hate him. I don't know how I really feel 😢😂
@@HeyzusdaGod i get your point
As a character Askeladd is one of the best in anime but I just can feel sad for him his the antagonist of this season a very cruel and bad person
I feel sad and cry for thorfinn at the end of the day askeladd was a father figure to thorfinn that's how tough his story is
The man that killed his father through thorfinn eyes was the closest thing he had to a father figure until askeladd died he never realized
been waiting since you started for this ❤
The people in the last scene is people Thorfinn will meet in the future guys
9:15 “oirrr noiirrr”
as long as you're alive, you can start over...
Favourite anime, Favourite season finale
The characters at the end there were a teaser. They are new important characters
Season 2 is even better
btw, all the randos are new characters, you've never met them
that was some good shit indeed carlie
We need more of this 👏👍🏼
thorfinn has been with askeladd for 10 years and i don't know but it seems like thorfinn has some hidden concern for askeladd. and the fact that Thorfin has lost 2 of his dads makes me cried so much😭😭
His VA is so good
Season 2 LESS GOOO
My boy askeladd bro 😭😭😭😭😭
Fun Fact: In the manga Thorfinn never gets arrested and the whole scene with Leif does not even happen XD
I honestly don't know if I like the Anime version.... but I'm probably just biased because I first read the manga...
well on to season 2:D
