Thorfinn called Askeladd Baldy because he lost some hair, it's more visible in the manga we can see more than he's getting older
U can see it in the anime as well if u go back to episode 3 and 4 askeladd didn't have a receding hairline

They don't actually have to be bald.
It's not much different than a young person calling a 40 year old "grandpa".
Askeladd wearing different armor is actually something a few characters remark on a few times. But that's easy to miss, because it mostly happens before his Welsh/Roman connection is known to the viewer.
For example, Thorfinn in like episode 4 shouted at Askeladd "your armor looks weird" when he was fighting Thors
okay, I need to point out something hugely important that we learn in this episode.
as a child, Askeladd's mother tells him a story. the story of Avalon, far across the great sea to the west. their ancestor, King Artorius, is there... in a heaven-like place. a place of everlasting spring. a place free from the suffering of death and old age in this life. Artorius is said to be recovering there, and then he will come back to save them from their suffering.
not only is this a motive for Askeladd's actions... that he's been given this directive, by his mother, to serve the true king when he appears... but also, this story should sound familiar.
"far to the west, across the sea, there is a land called Vinland. it's warm, and fertile. a faraway land where neither slave traders, nor the flames of war can reach."
I think there is significance to the way these stories are similar. and there is especially significance in the way they differ. one of these stories is told to a slave, to give them hope that there is a place in this world where they won't have to suffer. the other is told by a slave, in the hopes that a hero will appear and cause their suffering to cease. how is it that the story of Vinland can produce a man like Thors, while the story of Avalon produces a man like Askeladd? I think the answer lies in whether or not "paradise" is considered to be accessible for those who need it most.
I won't say anything more for now, but keep this information in mind.
also, I think Thorfinn's incidental dedication to Askeladd via his grudge is great evidence toward how deeply manipulated Thorfinn has been all his life. Askeladd can make this kid do anything, so long as he's confident that Thorfinn can't actually kill him, when it comes right down to it. and that's probably going to be the case for a good long while, because Askeladd has literally been observing all of Thorfinn's combat skills, habits, development, everything he's done as he gained this level of skill. Askeladd knows every tool in Thorfinn's arsenal, and he knows how to trip him up mentally and emotionally on top of that. the situation with Thorfinn has never been outside of Askeladd's control, and it still isn't, even now that everything else is falling apart. because Thorfinn is so massively dedicated... it makes him consistent, and predictable.
the only hiccup in Askeladd's ability to manipulate Thorfinn, is that Thorfinn's motivation is only to kill Askeladd. so in the case of the cart crashing... it's not Thorfinn's priority to defend Canute. it's his priority to find Askeladd, because the situation is super dicey right now, and if Askeladd dies, then Thorfinn had damn well better be the one doing the deed. he called dibs on that a long time ago... way before any of these idiots.
also, yeah, Thorfinn's calling him "baldy" because Askeladd has a receding hairline. it's more noticeable if you compare his appearance now to his first appearance, when he was younger. and Thorfinn is absolutely the type of intentionally offensive teenager that would try to antagonize him with that.
oh, and note the irony of this conflict between Askeladd and his men. Askeladd is pacing himself against them... he doesn't want to appear too strong, because he knows that'll intimidate them away from a direct assault. Thorkell has that issue... he's so strong that nobody will fight him head on, and Askeladd only stands a chance if they actually come at him. but then Askeladd gets struck from behind, looses his cool for a moment, and splits a guy in two... he ruins the pacing of his strategy. this is something he always chastises Thorfinn for doing. and when the men back off, because a close range fight doesn't seem like a good idea to them anymore... that's when they bring out the long range weapons. you can't escape archers when you're surrounded at such close range. he knows this, because of Thors. and it's funny... in the end, Askeladd has to fall back on the connection he has with the one guy who is _actually_ loyal to him, or he'd be dead.
also, the bridge strategy might've worked if Askeladd had been able to play the long game. Thorkell and his men probably couldn't cross the river with their supplies, but that works out fine for them here, because Askeladd got waylaid by the mutiny. if Askeladd and his crew kept marching, they could potentially outpace the ability of Thorkell's men to keep going without food and other resources. granted, Askeladd doesn't have many resources for their group either, but it beats having nothing. and honestly, if Askeladd had managed to run at the same time as Bjorn, Thorfinn, and Canute, then they might've been able to outrun both groups.
but yeah! now we have this whole clusterfuck! and I really don't envy Torgrim... he isn't a thinking man to begin with, but he tried to dip his toe into that arena at the exact wrong time, and it messed him right up. it's the idiots that you really feel for in situations like this, because it does feel like they just haven't had the opportunity to think better of what they're doing.

Thorfinn calls Askeladd 'baldy' because of his receding hairline. I think it is a bit more pronounced in the manga but you can look at the hairline difference from when he killed Thors a decade ago to current. I believe Askeladd was in his mid 30s at the start and is now in his mid 40s. Not as old as you think.
Also I never put together what Askeladd's 'wash your ass in the river' remark meant until now! That is hilarious!!
Well, he's actually quite old if we take into account the expectations of life at that time
@@ginchan7930 Sure, but I mean I always thought he was like a decade older than he actually is. Thorkell is 50 after all and seems/looks younger than Askeladd.
mid 40s is very old for an athlete trying to compete in the highest level of a sport, and that's essentially what a warrior like Askeladd is, an athlete.

Askeladd is the greatest character in newgen anime imo. He's absolutely incredible

You should watch the openings at least on the last episode where they are presented since there is nothing left to be spoiled. For opening 1 that would've been episode 12.

Askalad knew about the revolt, that is why he ask them to cut the bridge. To give Thorkell time to get there and create chaos

Regarding Leif Erikson's search for Thorfinn to return him home, you have to think of the huge information assymmetry between Leif Erikson, the people of England and you/us (the viewers).
What we know about Thorfinn I don't have to tell you, so I don't.
Regarding Leif: Remember when, where, with whom and in which situation, he lost Thorfinn. He lost Thorfinn when he was six years old, in a fjord of the Northern Ilses (I can't remember nor propperly pronounce the nordic name of those three Islands north of Great Brittan), with a band of Vikings who killed Thors, who could have sailed anywhere (in coastal north western europe), who might have killed that brat, that was definetly going to try to avenge his father, and if they didn't kill Thorfinn the most likely courses of action would be: leaving him to die or selling him into slavery.
Since two out of those three likely outcomes are equivalent to Thorfinn beeing dead and therefore not very sensible to pursue if your gole is primarily to get him home alive and you don't have the resources to pursue those ones additionally to the slavery ones, Leif is probably looking for a skandinavian boy in his teens with blond hair the name of Thorfin, who was a slave since he was a little kid.
Not really a description you recognize the real Thorfinn with if you have actually met him (and lived).
And if you actually have met him (and lived to tell the tale), you still probably don't know much about him. Especially if you are English and therefore have a pretty solid language barrier between the two of you (and betwee you and most of Askelads men I'd think). So you more likely would know him as this danish scout, that's still very young and scarily good at killing people with knives. Or you know him as a (admittedly outstanding) member of this Viking gang, of which you maybe know the name of their leader: Askelad. But you most likely wouldn't know his name, since Thorfinn doesn't exactly run around and tell everyone his name (unless he shouts it out loudly as part of a duell). So unless Leif asks one of Askelads or Thorkels men, probably no one would know that Thorfinn is called Thorfinn. So the only overlapp between the infos you have about the viking boy you met (probably some time ago) and the slave boy Thorfinn that this man Leif is asking you about right now, is gender, age and hair colour. I don't knwo if that's enough for you to connect the dots, and even if you did (unless you additionally dropped Askelads name as the leader of that viking band) I don't think that this would be enough for Leif to follow that lead you provided him with.

I suggest you look up the “Torgrim vs Thorkell” manga panel, because i dont wanna say the anime fumbled it, but it kinda did. The manga panel is insane compared to the anime.

From here on out, it's the highlight of the first term. I cried a lot at the story ahead.
I know you're talking about specifically attacking horses being realistic, but it's still hilarious that it's Thorkell casually uppercutting a charging +1200lbs horse several feet into the air to which you remarked "This is very realistic" without a hint of irony.

thor was the leader of the jombviking bro, and thorkel actually can be the top leader to, but he refuse. because of his charakter, he only wants to join the war if he likes it. while the jombviking was supposed to be a tool for the king, and had to obey all his orders
Thors was never the leader of the Jomsvikings. He was the strongest warrior but the leader is Sigvaldi, which is Thorkell's older brother
