I feel like Luke was ahead with death of Ragnar. In episode 8 or 9 he said Ragnar has to die and he knew it would happen just not when until this episode started to show flashbacks. So i believe that he said he started to like Ragnar because he knew its the end.

@@filipexavier8771 well, European kings used to have preferences for dynastic names. For example, the french king beheaded during the revolution was Louis XVI, that means there were 15 other kings in France with the same name before him. Names are powerful, a king who did well would inspire his successors.

Askeladd chose the welfare of his men over the village. In his mind he was giving them a more merciful death than starving to death during the brutal winter after he stole their food! Really tough episode to watch but still brilliant!

Also remember that those folks - Saxons living near the Welsh border - were like hereditary enemies of his own people. Many devastating Saxon raids were probably launched to Wales from villages like that in the course of centuries.

Yes, but let's not ignore the fact that Askeladd chose that route, with full knowledge that they would have to pillage for food on their way through.
Just if the intent of your comment is to say that Askeladd didn't really have a choice, which would lessen the severity of what he did.

@@RenderingUser Can't tell if you're blatantly justifying Askeladd's actions, or if you simply don't understand my comment.
No, i obviously don't expect them to do that; what i'm saying is that no matter Askeladd's situation, he wasn't forced to be there, and killing that village was avoidable.
That goes for any raid Askeladd's crew have done since the beginning of the story.
So the point is, that we shouldn't just accept it as a "casualty of circumstance" when Askeladd put himself in that position.

also, I feel like in terms of that question... whether or not your behavior matters in the moment, if you can just apologize and absolve yourself of all misdeeds... it actually has a really interesting answer in the context of Vinland Saga. I think VS posits that, when you live a life full of awful deeds, you actually do rob yourself of something vital. like... you kind of kneecap your own ability to feel true joy.
if you really understood joy, love, care, etc. then you'd ache at the notion of having it ripped away. and from there, it's very easy to attribute that feeling to another person.
once you realize that others can suffer, just as you can, it becomes uncomfortable to cause the suffering of another person. and especially when you understand the instinct to seek retribution, which most people feel naturally, and will only quell if they're principled enough to put compassion first. if you think that robbing someone of their happiness means that you deserve to be robbed of yours in kind, then you are incentivized not to cause your own suffering.
and honestly... even the kind of numbness that would allow a person to be cruel, without feeling for the victim or fearing retribution, is a form of suffering. committing horrible acts is a hell of some type or another, all on its own.
basically, I see this as having ties to stoicism, in it's most toxic form. Askeladd might be capable of destroying people's happiness like this, because he's secure in the knowledge that he has nothing of his own that they could take from him. as a defensive measure, he doesn't have anything that matters to him enough that they could hurt him with it. he's preemtively robbed himself of anything they could've used. nothing of value is left.
if you want to throw stones, you can't live in a glass house. and I think this leads many men to wander this world, out in the elements, numb, and alone.
so in a case like that... to apologize, and feel it for real, actually is a path toward a better place, even in the world of the living. having access to love... being able to know what it means, and how to feel it... that teaches people how to value it, and work to protect and preserve it. and you can't really preserve it for yourself without trying to preserve it for others as well.
you have no enemies. there is no one that it is okay to hurt.

the way this show portrays the love (and absence of) of a father is incredible. the incredible dynamics between the two younger characters and thors, askeladd, ragnar and the king are all so different but equally real. the strength thors and ragnar have in their final moments due to wanting to protect their sons is heartbreaking in the best way. and on top of that it ties it all into different religious and spiritual views as well, i may not be religious myself but it is truely fascinating

  • @kamuyking551
    @kamuyking551 23 дні тому +19

up top, I have a bit of a question... last episode was a really rough one, emotionally speaking. would you want a warning before an episode that heavy is about to happen? because this show will get dark again. always with a purpose, but it will get heavy, and I can let you know when it's about to, just so you aren't blindsided. but only if you'd want that.
I say this because I was showing my brother this series, and he's the type who really benefits from warnings like those. he's been able to watch every episode, but being told ahead of time so he can brace himself has literally kept him from having panic attacks. so I really respect it if that's something that'd be helpful for you.
anyway, in general, I really love the priest, Willibard, in this episode. he was the one guy who tried to warn the villagers of what was about to happen. he got the shit kicked out of him for it, and it didn't work, but he tried. and now here he is, questioning god, for the role god has played in humanity's suffering. in general, it seems like both he and Anne share a perception of god, sitting in heaven, aloof, and unwilling to intervene in the trials he sets before human beings, who are not empowered to make a difference as they weather it all. but Willibard's questioning of god, the father, seems to strike a nerve with Canute. when he talks about "all fathers loving their children," his assertion seems like an insecure statement about the king... the father on high, powerful yet distant, sometimes inscrutable and yet... always loving. right?
Canute can hope. but that's kind of the problem in a nutshell. Ragnar may be blunt and bad at reading things, but it was probably plain for anyone to see that Sweyn was putting Canute in over his head when he left him in charge of the siege on London. and knowing the political situation between Canute and Harald would've only cemented the king's intentions even further. Canute doesn't see it because he's in denial... he wants to believe that every father loves their children, including his own. being wrong about that isn't something he can handle yet, but Ragnar can intuit at least this much.
and on the subject of absent yet loving fathers, Thorfinn once again has cause to think of Thors. and I think it's very relevant that Thorfinn is missing him here, now, after this dark deed. Thorfinn is living very far from the love his father displayed so readily. if there were grace and compassion in the person raising him... who might Thorfinn have turned out to be?
as for Ragnar... I think I said already, but he breaks my heart because he's not good at this. the show has made a point of displaying this on multiple occasions. when he calls out in the midst of the forest fire and identifies himself even to the enemy, or when he demands three warships for their travels when Wales isn't equipped to provide them with such an extravagance... it's not just that Ragnar is used to high society (though it is partly that) but also... Ragnar is not good at playing the field strategically. he has very little tact, and poor instincts. his main method is to keep his hackles up, indiscriminately, all the time. and then he still fails to notice really obvious stuff, like the setup in this episode.
it's horrible, because that annoyingly defensive helicopter parent tendency of his from early on, is really just this man trying his absolute 110% maximum to keep one child safe. and when he talks to Canute about cooking, you can see the interest he shows in it, and how engaged he is... even privately going and asking for recipes when they eat something that tastes good, because he knows Canute would like that. in general, cooking together and sharing a meal is such a distinct indication of care for another person... something sorely lacking from Canute's relationship with his actual father, who would rather destroy what Canute made, than take a single bite.
but this is why it makes sense that, when Ragnar asks to speak with Askeladd... it's not because he's thought of some brilliant plan. he's not a strategist in the best of times. but he does deeply care about Canute. so he straightforwardly asks Askeladd to take care of him, and warns him about what may come. Ragnar knows that many, many people are against Canute in this world, and Ragnar was one of the most dedicated people that would always be in his corner, for Canute's sake... not for the sake of anyone or anything else. so he makes one final blunt plea for his safety. because at the end of everything, that's who Ragnar is.
side note: I think you're correct in assuming that Thorfinn probably catches and eats his own food most of the time. and because nobody ever taught him anything, I doubt he's actually any good at it, even after all these years. he at least would never have access to seasoning, nor would he know how or why to use it. he probably views food as fuel for the most part, and he's probably defensive of keeping his stuff separate from anyone else's because he doesn't want to owe anyone. so yeah, this is probably the best thing Thorfinn has eaten in a long time.
but yeah, thank you for loving Thorfinn, he's such a hard sell for some people, because he's just this grouchy ball of compressed anger and bitterness, but I adore his character... he reflects so many valuable things about how various abuses can affect a person's development, and what people are like when you put them in so many challenging situations.

It's not a surprise we already know who and what they are. They've been raiding villages this whole time - this was just zoomed in on it to remind us that's what we're dealing with.
I wouldn't even call it evil, though. It's brutal math, but if Askeladd didn't raid for supplies, all his men would die - if they split the supplies with the village, everyone would die, just more slowly. This was the most pragmatic approach to the situation they were in. The dire reality of necessity.

Yeh, the feelings Vinland Saga has invoked in me throughout the seriers are so hard to describe. As someone who is up to date with the manga, I promise you, it has yet to dissapoint. It hurts a lot at times, and at times makes you very happy, but it does not dissapoint.
And I agree with you that it really does not feel like an anime. Personally it feels very realistic to me. As your reactions hopefully continue, when you get to a certain episode in season 2 I will coment again in more detail, but there was a small scene, almost a throw away line that really cemented this anime, and the mangaka, at the all time top spot for me.

The way I see it with being good or bad and just asking for forgiveness is you never know when you will die. Also if you just ask for forgiveness for all your sins while continuing to put no effort into redeeming yourself thinking you can scam God... It won't work. It is a nice message that bad people can be given a second chance and receive forgiveness so they can start living a more moral life though.

The ending really gives perspective to when Canute shouted at the priest and said ''We must not doubt the father's love. All fathers love his own child'', in an emotional tone that conveyed that he may not be talking about Jesus/God, but his own father. Canute likely mustve noticed his father's disdain towards him, but is in denial of it, assuring himself that his father MUST love him deep down, as all fathers do. The priest questioning God's love hit him hard, because if the PRIEST himself is the doubting ''the Father's Love'', then who is he not to face reality and doubt his own father's love? Pretences must be kept, and Ragnar likely contributed to spurring on his denial, letting him think that ''of course your father loves you, all parents do.'' Even though deep down, Canute must be feeling otherwise.

Vinland saga is very grounded and has a very realistic setting to the point that you would be able to tell the story in live action. You would have to decrease the strength feeds and change the fight choreography at points because some are borderline superhuman but you would only need to do that with a few of them. I honestly don't even want it to get a live action but it is still noteworthy that you could do it with a few minor changes. Really shows how realistic the story is.

It's very much like the author had the idea for a dead-serious psychological-thriller drama, but then instead of doing a series of novels, just happened to create it in the form of a manga series, which was later very faithfully adapted into an anime.

There is actually some personal projection/denial in Canute chastising the Priest for doubting the Father (God) in that Canute wants to believe in his own Father (The King) despite him being aware that his Father doesn't love him, (I'm sure he'd be in denial but not surprised to know his father wants him dead.) The Whole talk also catches Thorfinn's interest thinking about his own Father.
Ragnar could be seen as a kind of father figure to Canute but in some ways failed as a Father figure in teaching him to stand on his own, and Askeladd might be a new father figure and balance that out....(Although he might lack kindness.)
The Way I see it Both Thors and Askaladd are kinda both Thorfinn's Father figures in a strange way, Thors is trying to teach Thorfin kindness, Askeladd is teaching him wisdom, but Thorfin at this point can't appreciate either because he's too stubborn and needs to learn it the hard way, the one thing Thors and Askeladd share is conviction to something greater even is Thors lacks Askeladd's Pragmatism and Askeladd lacks Thor's kindness.

Norse and Scandinavian history is lousy with different Haralds. Harald Fairhair was the legendary, semi-historical first king of Norway. That's the same Harald from the Vikings tv show, and that Leif Erickson mentioned in the first episode. There's Harald Bluetooth (and yes, bluetooth technology is named after him, and the bluetooth symbol is a rune he used for himself, IIRC), and was the father of the king Sweyn (Canute's father), Harald Klak, Harald Hardrada, aka the last Viking King who died at Stamford Bridge, and so on and so forth.
Canute's brother Harald is obviously an entirely different person, but it's a lot of Haralds to keep straight, so don't feel bad about getting some of them mixed up.

The king og denmark at this time is Swein or Svend "Forkbeard" He has two sons, Canute/ Knud and Harald. Harald is not the same as Hadrada who is Norwegian. It's just a very common name at the time so the confusion is understandable. Just prepare if you ever become interested in middle eastern history... half the monarchs share the same three names on repeat.

I think the moralising, while being a very human reaction to this story and others of a similar nature, needs to be questioned and the actions ('good' or 'bad') taken by all characters need to be set in context. This story is set in an age where massacres were far from unusual and if anything, were seen as an occupational hazard and just another part of war. Hell, if you even look back at last episode, Ragnar is only really objecting to the massacre because "they're Christians" - the implication being that if they were Pagan etc it wouldn't have mattered nearly as much.
Just something to consider going forward because this is actually tackled by the author going forward and I suspect you may have already watched his first attempt to do so a couple of episodes from now.

Just catching up on last 2 eps, finally I'm not alone with the characters anymore lol.
Though I'm suprised Luke only turned around with ep 14, as they've been clearly doing that same thing in previous episodes already, even happening live in the episode. It just wasn't shown in the same detail.
But anyway, I've pretty much hated all the characters since the very early episodes. There's noone relatable which really keeps me at a distance from anything happening. Thorfinn included as he was just joining in previously. Maybe they all meet the same horrible end as those villagers.
I guess now there's only Canute I don't hate, but I don't like him either.

answering you question in the minute 9:13, I recommend you read Matthew chapter 20, verses 1 - 16
For the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a house, who went out early in the morning to get workers into his vine-garden.
And when he had made an agreement with the workmen for a penny a day, he sent them into his vine-garden.
    And he went out about the third hour, and saw others in the market-place doing nothing;
And he said to them, Go into the vine-garden with the others, and whatever is right I will give you. And they went to work.
Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did the same.
And about the eleventh hour he went out and saw others doing nothing; and he says to them, Why are you here all the day doing nothing?
They say to him, Because no man has given us work. He says to them, Go in with the rest, into the vine-garden.
And when evening came, the lord of the vine-garden said to his manager, Let the workers come, and give them their payment, from the last to the first.
And when those men came who had gone to work at the eleventh hour, they were given every man a penny.
Then those who came first had the idea that they would get more; and they, like the rest, were given a penny.
And when they got it, they made a protest against the master of the house,
Saying, These last have done only one hour's work, and you have made them equal to us, who have undergone the hard work of the day and the burning heat.
But he in answer said to one of them, Friend, I do you no wrong: did you not make an agreement with me for a penny?
Take what is yours, and go away; it is my pleasure to give to this last, even as to you.
Have I not the right to do as seems good to me in my house? or is your eye evil, because I am good?
So the last will be first, and the first last.
And I also recommend Galatians chapter 6, verse 7
Be not tricked; God is not made sport of: for whatever seed a man puts in, that will he get back as grain.
In other words, he want to save all of his children, but he will not be deceived by someone that thinks "Oh, I will be Christian just to not go to hell"

God isnt dumb. He know when person just says sorry, and when he genuinely feel remorse. Criminal record philosophy would have ment that after committing certain amount of vile you have point of no return, and turning to light makes no reason. Thats not what Christ is about. Record of sins was taken away by Gods sacrifice, so only final state of your soul at moment of departure matters. You cant plan sinning whole life and then make yourself feel real remorse, its impossible.

I think he was trying to say is that someone who does a lot of evil, and then genuinely realizes that and asks for forgiveness can achieve heaven just like someone who abstains from sin and asks for forgiveness.

Because of your question whether it makes a difference whether you live your life well or badly and then apologise and go to heaven in both cases.
First of all, the Bible says that it doesn't even matter whether you do good deeds or bad deeds, as is perhaps the case in many other religions. The Bible makes it clear that, in theory, a person must be perfect in order to go to heaven. In practice, this means that no human being can go to heaven because no human being is perfect. No one, therefore no matter how well you live your life or how badly you live your life by no deed can get to heaven. But there is one person who lived perfectly without doing one thing wrong, called Jesus, who died the death on the cross that we humans should have died so that we can live the life that this perfect Jesus would live - life in heaven.
The Bible describes this act as a gift from God and as pure grace and therefore, if a person prays to God truly sincerely at the end of their life, and does so in the sense of realising that they have lived their life wrongly in some way or that they do not deserve heaven, I believe that God is merciful and gives these people the gift of going to heaven through Jesus (this is exactly what happened to the criminal who hung on the cross at Jesus' right side (Luke 23:39-43).
At the same time, however, I believe that if you really get to know God as this God who gives people the undeserved gift of spending an eternity in heaven and is therefore a God who can take away people's guilt, be it the feeling of guilt, but can also actually take away the guilt and thus, figuratively speaking, wash people clean. To get to know this God, then you also want to do the „good“ things/ the things God says, because you believe and see and experience that these things are good for me and for the people around me. I think anyone who thinks they have got to know God and yet consciously decides to choose this "bad way of life" has not really got to know God.
    Hope this helps

When it comes to God and forgiveness, I'd say the most reasonable answers would be in the Islamic holy book, The Quran. I say that because I know you'll see it is a pretty impressive message
