DIY CONCRETE PYRAMID SINK + Bathroom Design || ABANDONED BUILDING RENO ep. 10
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 лис 2020
- In the 10th episode of my abandoned building renovation, we go through the bathroom design, and finally get to some concrete work - fabricating the DIY concrete countertop with an integrated sink for the guest bathroom. I’m hoping the guest bathroom should be a dream bathroom for guests that come through to collaborate :)
To make the (semi-)DIY bathroom sink I used glass fiber reinforced concrete, and sprayed the face coat of concrete mix with a hopper gun. I then came back and hand packed 3 layers of concrete. I designed the concrete sink in Fusion 360, and cut the foam concrete form for the pyramid-shaped sink with slot drain on my Avid CNC.

Im thankful for this series 🤘
"Ariat Work" I could use a nice pair of boots
When you're using the on camera audio, (if this happens again) just apply 'multi band compressor' on premiere (if that's what you're using) and set it to classic master, and it will crisp up that audio for you. You might get a bit of elevated background noise but you can remove that with something like RX elements voice-denoiser
ARIAT WORK....love the show.
Ariat work
I'm really starting to think that you bought an entire building, just so you can make 12 different counter tops for each bathroom :P
Man, I truly appreciate the mistakes being filmed and problem solved on camera.
A suggestion for the re-use of your sawdust - maybe put an ad out for potters who practice Japanese Raku firing. Sawdust is often used in the reduction process; when the ceramic pieces are removed from the kiln while they're glowing hot, they're put into containers, covered with sawdust, then closed off for a while until they have cooled. This process causes carbonisation in the cracks /crazing caused by thermal shock. You might have seen ceramic vases, for example, with areas of blackened cracks across the surface of the vessel. It's really quite beautiful.
So, you might be able to sell (or give away) your sawdust to be used to create beautiful ceramic art. I'm pretty sure there are potters potting, quietly tucked away in some nook or cranny somewhere in Chicago ;)
I really enjoy watching your renovation updates. Ive been following your amazing project from the start & always look out for your next episodes. I also really enjoy the videos of your industrial designs. I'm a ceramic designer maker, so I identify with some of your processes, and have picked up some useful tips; I recently invested in a set of the ball tools for sealing the edges of the formers for mould making- so thank you for that - it will save a lot of time and energy!
I wish you all the best with your home reno - congrats on receiving the permits at last!
Julia, from the UK.
I just saw this, the Chicago park district has at least one ceramic studio that I'm aware of (because I use it XD) and we do raku firings occasionally! We would definitely appreciate some sawdust
Just use washers or a, “metal sleeve” that goes around the bolt in between the wall and the metal brace. Also, loving the series. You’re doing great work!
Thats what i was going to suggest, washers would be easy to add or remove them to get it perfect
The fact this is your second upload in a week is the only positive thing to happen in 2020
This is a lie. All his uploads are good things to happen in 2020.
Big facts! 2020 has been trash otherwise.
I really like how you didn't hide the fact that you screwed up 3 times with the CNC machine.
Thanks for keeping it real
I'm pretty sure I could have carved that shape faster and easier with an electric foam cutter. I would have just cut out the rough shape and finished it smooth with a sander.
Just started watching...interesting “Ariat Works” cool sponsors
As I’m binging this series i gotta say theres a lotta mistakes being made and i appreciate that theyre left in. We’re actually along for your learning process and seeing that not everything goes smoothly and that’s alright. Also we get to see how you overcome stuff and i like that. Great work.
Thanks Renz!
4" grinder with a cheap diamond wheel will level any minor high spots in the brick. Quick and easy.
Dont shim you brackets, chase them in the wall. Several benefits including youre brkt will have a recess to support it, you will also feel the brick integrity while you chasing.
Yeah i was thinking the same thing. I dont think there is another secure way at least none that i can think of
That turned out really nice! I just love watching this series!
And I love watching your videos, Alexandre.
Me too :D
What you working on Alexander this week I been looking for this weeks video
Lol, I just copied a link to one of your videos to send to him, then I see you watching his videos too.
I love both of your channels. Great work.
thanks brother! was happy to work the 3D printer in on this one -- had to get it warmed up for whenever we get you out here ;)
I randomly came across your videos on the abandoned building and I'm obsessed. Can't wait to see more!
thanks Craig!
@@modustrial same here man. Just subbed keep up the good work!!!
“ARIAT WORK”
Love the series man. I think you’re living most of our dreams right now.
When you mentioned the hexagon sink design, a voice in my head was yelling "noooooo, go for 'minimal minimalism' ..." The reality is that cleaning the corners of the hexagons is a lot of work. 😂
If you know anyone that composts or have a community garden nearby they would love the sawdust! Wood chips/sawdust is essential for making compost.
Or maybe someone with fruit trees, my grandfather always used the saw dust to keep the ground from freezing over and damaging the roots. I dont know how cold it gets in chicago but maybe a good idea
Just make sure the wood isn't treated if used in a compost or in the garden. Or even if you burn it, there will be bad fumes..
Can't use that saw dust for plants since the boards were glued together. It contains polyurethane in the saw dust and that is not good for plants, beneficial bugs, or the environment in general. Clean saw dust makes a great soil amendment, but becomes useless when you contaminate it with chemicals. Same reason you should never use sawdust from PT lumber.
You get the same issues using it for fuel.
Until you have particles of melamine and the glues used to make particle board and plywood mixed in.
As people have said, nothing with glue is any good in the garden. And it's just so easy for me to get from a local sawmill (there's a little one 20 mins away) for free anyway. There I can pick up a cubic yard, or a semi load, whatever I want (yes, they have a semi that picks up a load every week and they still have what appears to be an unlimited supply).
Also, it's not great in the garden as mulch. It tends to lock up the nitrogen too much and messes with the PH level. I've used it as a mulch before, and it wasn't very good. Works good in compost though.
“ARIAT WORK”
Remember to put an electrical socket next to the toilet for the more advanced bidet systems.
“ARIAT WORK”
man when he covered the car and dragged the tarp over the paint i died inside
For real... The clearcoat is shot!
I felt that one too..
Dude I love how you are taking the time to make everything basically from scratch to the best of your ability. Most people doing a DIY project of this scale would just buy a vanity and call it a day. Never stop!
So...plans to keep that elevator? Because that sounds dangerously convenient...Also, "Ariat Work".
One of the ultimate status symbols, nice.
ARIAT WORK
Watching that foam get carved away is very soothing for some reason...
“ARIAT WORK”
Love the series. Can’t wait to see more!
Ngl, image just rolling a marble over that hexagon sink design. Must sound cool
It'd have looked awesome, too - a bit like the Giant's Causeway if done in dark/basalt colours and there's a little bit of water in the sink.
I hope he uses that design somewhere else, it would look so good
Don't use shims on your sink support bars. My suggestion, use bolts and nuts. Your bolts go into the uneven brick wall. You can adjust the nuts to make the whole support bar square. Then you use a second nut to lock it in place. Any excess part of the bolt off the wall you can just cut down. :) My wife and myself are loving what you are doing! We look forward to these videos!
“ARIAT WORK”
Thank you for documenting and sharing your journey. It’s great to get to watch the progress.
“ARIAT WORK”
Loving the series, look forward to trying some concrete work myself.
Keep up the great work. I'm so glad that I found you in time when you started that project. I can't wait to see it completed.
I kinda wish I found it when it was finished tbh lol, would love to binge watch it and see how beautiful it turned out.
Bro what 2 of these back to back? Let’s go!
And now a month wait
“ARIAT WORK”
Loving the content. Glad the permits came through!
Dude, your channel makes me want to do so many projects. Being a dad of two in a single income home makes time and money a major factor but, thanks for the inspiration and keep up the incredible work.
Since you have access to the brick wall before it is being furred out and you are proficient /comfortable with using concrete, I suggest do two strips of leveled concrete built-up over the brick wall where you plan to mount your elbow brackets as shimming solution. Just make sure the brick is abraded enough for optimal adhesion.
"I only have one 240V outlet"..
Laughs in European
My grandma has more 240V outlets than that in her knitting room
"ARIAT WORK"
Glad to see that you're back to working on this series.
“Ariat work”
Love your knowledge around concrete projects. Your efforts really create that extra smooth finish.
You are amazing! That was fast! 2 episodes in the same week?! Dude thank you fo this! Keep it up! ❤
Thank you! 🙏
Route a groove in the wall with the diamond disc. Keep removing the hump until the bracket sits plumb =)
Sound good to me :D
If using grinder spray cutting disc to keep dust down, resin anchor hilti hit hy150 should be good enough to hold the threaded stud for you to bolt the supports to
"ARIAT WORK"
This has been a great series. Enjoying seeing this project come together.
“ARIAT WORK”
Really loving this series. Thanks for sharing.
“ARIAT WORK”
This sink is such a cool project but I sooooo wouldn’t have the patience to do it. This is why I watch things like this 😂😂😂
In the Netherlands some sawdust is used for small mushroom farms, depends on what wood sawdust it is. U could maybe look for one of those farms nearby?
First off: I love the series and how you just start things, that normally only pros would be able to do, without overthinking it.
My small tip as a German Jointer/Carpenter:
Slit a rectangular opening into the metal sheet for your circular saw with your angle grinder, so that it can sit straight on the metal slab.
It won't make a huge difference but makes for a bit of quality of life.
Keep up the good work!
“ARIAT WORK”
I love that you show us all your hiccups along the way just shows us the real side to renovations and diy projects. I can’t wait to see it all done and so happy you released two vids this week!
“ARIAT WORK”
I am so enjoying this series, turning a warehouse or something into a livable space is one of the things I daydream about!
Thank you!
Sad that the contest is only in US... Big support from Portugal!! Keep up the awesome work!!
“ARIAT WORK”
Good idea with the joint compound.
Welcome back! Happy you finally got the permits worked out so you can keep building! I love your work.
In regards to the saw dust recycling, your local pet shop will be more than happy to take it! Loved the video by the way, it’s excellent seeing it all coming together
Only thing then is you need to take apart the untreated wood and without glue etc, so only from plain massive wood....
@@barthuisman6076 true, I hadn’t considered that, it could always be composted in that case
@@phuonmaifache4258 wouldn't like treated wood dust compost at the plants where I eat from...
@@barthuisman6076 but for ornamental plants like perennials would still be fine

Lovin the vids on this building can’t wait for the final look
Man I live in Sweden and we're still just looking into getting a loan to buy a house...
I've learned so much from you already it's incredible...
Thank you for showing me how to do this stuff!
Ever thought about adding dim led lights in the bathroom? So at night you won't get blasted my 100000 watt bulbs 🤣
Ooohhhh... Under the sink reflecting down onto the floor would be cool
@@PattyPaints yes! It will be nice
“ARIAT WORK”
Love the concrete work. Use your videos a lot to reference. Very helpful.
Love the long form video. I’ve been a welder and metal worker for 16 years. Straight up just make your own shims. Get some mild steel to your desired thickness maybe start with 16ga, cut to size, and then stack them until level. After you get it flush with the wall you can tac your shims and mount together and go from there. Love the videos man very inspiring. If you ever have any welding questions reach out!
He said double floaty who doesn’t love that, in the bathroom.
Double floaties are worth double points, and if you need a double flusher - they're worth 4x points.
Concerning the "Sawdust Issue" you could:
a) Go to the local Home Depot and dispose it.
b) Use it as Mulch in a garden (wich you don´t have)... Maybe a Neighbour?
c) Throw it in a compost pile (with materials that are rich in Nitrogen... This proces could take over 4 months).
d) Buy a wood Pelletizing machine. Then use this pellets as fuel.
Great countertop btw. Real smooth...
I've heard pellet grills are fantastic. If you go with option D, it'd be great for the roof deck. Cooks your meat perfectly from edge to edge.
ARIAT WORK
My dude, killer project. Can’t wait to see the finished project and thanks for bringing us all along for the ride.
I love the murals in your work space! So fun!!
"ARIAT WORK" Great job so far, looking forward to many more videos of the progress!
“ARIAT WORK”
I look forward to seeing the whole building finished :D
"ARIAT WORK". That sink is awesome. Love the TP cutout.
Cool Tip for when your using silicone in a caulk gun. if youre going to to be scraping off excess, spray it down with soapy water after the bead is applied. this makes it super clean and easy to remove. Learned that trick working as a PVC Window and Door installer for a year😃
“ARIAT WORK” It looks like this building is coming together

I love the way it came out
Takes 20 mins by hand to make that form or 3 days to make it by CNC.
True, but sometimes the skill learnt (in this case being more familiar with the CNC) opens up more options in the future. I think it was more of a learning experience than a necessity.
