- In this episode of the abandoned building renovation, we show how to build a DIY rooftop deck with a dog run, and prove you can have a deck with green space in the middle of a city. The rooftop deck is 16x12 and made of 2 8’x8’ deck sections, and 2 4’x8’ deck sections that are covered with artificial grass to make a dog run / lawn on my roof.

We have the Faux/Fake Grass in back yard, be careful it gets very hot in the summer, don't let Bruce burn his paws .... Loving this series on the build, only wish there were more abandoned building in the UK, that coud be renovated :)
There is 500,000 empty homes here and a lot in London
Sadly there are so many in the UK, I work right next to 2 large abandoned buildings that would be amazing like this but maybe something about UK bureaucracy has prevented anything being done with them... 10+ years there are so many large commercial buildings empty, in Southampton. Where I work we tried to get permission to spread into the abandoned building next door, which is actually part of our original building. We didn't get anywhere with it, but now the roof and wall we share cause us problems due to the rot and pests getting into that abandoned place. It makes no sense! Such a waste. There are also so many abandoned military homes in the UK, enough to house all homeless veterans, however they have been left to fall into disrepair. Roughly 11,000 homes owned by MOD are empty and have been for many years, some now uninhabitable. There are somewhere between 3500 - 6000 homeless veterans in the UK... Its crazy

Lumber didn't come back down because the economy has improved, it's because people now refused to buy it. I have not bought a single piece of lumber in 4 months, and I have a wood shop. Maybe I'll do some price checking today.

Yup! This is why I bought my neighbor's old deck and repurposed it this spring (into a floating screened in porch for my RV).
Don't get me wrong, it was a huge pain to dismantle and move and took twice as long as it should have. But was about 1/3 the cost when all said and done.

@@andreschezpik you might wanna check when the prices started to rock up. Last year a lot of materials weren't even available bc of shortages. Which I don't believe Trumps bears a lot of responsibility for, but it sure isn't Bidens fault. It's almost as if there are more (and far more important) factors when it comes to the building sector.

Wait, wait, wait. So the dog is supposed to piss on the plastic grass? Isn't that gonna be pretty nasty real soon? And it's right next to where you wanna be sitting? Am I missing something?
Yeah. That idea won't last long.
The grass is treated; the urine flows through the deck to the roof, where it can be cleaned, and washed.
@@lakewrites @lakewrites Maybe I'm missing something, but I didn't see any drains near that. Will there be pee water all over the pace until it rains or will they have to wash that whole section of the roof? Pee + sun make for really bad stink
@@lakewrites if the concrete is porous its gonna stink bad.
As someone who uses 2x4 porch potty, you NEED to replace the grass every 2-3 months and wash it every 1-2 weeks if you're planning on allowing your dog to urinate on it. You will likely need to recycle that design and replace it with something using an inclined plastic drain system and a large basin or corrugated pipe that runs to your roof drainage.

Watching the two of you moving all the boards up to the roof top, cutting and framing was exhausting and you two were doing the work in the hot sun and humid conditions after the rain. Nice deck build. It’ll be great to have outdoor space for everybody, including Bruce and the kitty.
You can do more with that rooftop! You can liven it up a bit more for social gatherings. More lounge area designs, grilling set up and even an outdoor kitchen set up. So much potential with that space. Not to mention some floating string lines...OMG...what a great layout for social gatherings and another location for your youtube videos.
