    1:36 made me scared. You should be happy your sawstop emergency stoped. Please never ever use a paralel guide while crosscutting, the board between the paralel guide and the blade isn't secure and if it jams it is going to fly.
    Nice build for the rest!! Good use of all techniques.

      Please help us noobs understand so we don't die. So when crosscutting against the grain of wood, you should do it by hand? Or?

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 років тому +5

      The thing I did wrong was using the fence in conjunction with a cross-cut sled...as I've now learned, this is a big no-no. Using the sled is fine, as long as the piece you are cross-cutting isn't riding the fence as you cut it.

    • @Heinz76Harald
      @Heinz76Harald 4 роки тому

      you can use the paralel guide ofc, but it HAVE TO end right before you enter the saw, so you cant get stucked. and ofc... dont push on both sides, since it will get stucked again...
      i just wonder how it comes somebody got a nice table saw in his shop and has no clue how to use it /facepalm

    FYI you can totally cut foam like that with a box cutter, make sure the blades are sharp, don't be afraid to replace them every few minutes, and you'll have no foam dust to contend with and no cnc costs to worry about. The only thing to watch out for here is just keeping your hand 90 degrees to the surface as you cut it for a nice stepped look like the cnc provides, or expect a little more wiggle in that stepped look. Finally to translate a sketchup design onto foam like that by hand, I've found taking screen shots of the form, and then using a projector works really well. if you set the cad of the form into a theoretical rectangle that matches the real life size of the form (say 4' by 4') you can match up the projected screen shot up easily to the actual form to be traced. If you use a little care Ive found this gets accuracy to about 1/8 of an inch, if you're really meticulous you can get it even tighter.

    Looking amazing. For fast concrete removal ( bottom of the table ) you can use grinder diamond disk , then polish.

    Beautiful table..!
    I think I'd like to see some experimentation with some fiberoptics, for lights that could be inserted through the bottom of the epoxy to provide another layer of interest for projects like this one.
    I've been thinking about building a shower with walls made from epoxy. And use fiberoptic lights to make it look like a star scape in the dark blue walls.

    If you use acetone, you can just dissolve the styrofoam.

    DAP Kwik Seal filler is the best for filling gaps in that pink foamular board. That or some wood filler, but the kwik seal is a bit better. Basically, anything that isn't corrosive. The pink foam board reacts much like styrofoam does and will melt even to some of the mildest corrosive compounds and adhesives. It's not as resistant as EVA foam.

    Idk about u but it's like more modern clean thing I've ever seen! Love it!
    I first thought the concrete was a full box...would've been super duper heavy! But u played it smart. Made it hollow. Imagine how more awesome it'd be with stuff in? ( plants... Fish or bubles ... Etc. Just one kind. Hehe.) Still amazing as ever as is. U gained a subscriber 😍😍😍

    I saw a table like this about a decade or so ago, but they left the concrete grey.. I like how with it being white, you can't even tell it's concrete. Nice job! Love it!

    You did such an awesome job showing us how you did each step. Both the good and bad experance was so greatly appreciated so for those who may want to do such a project can learn from what you had done.
    I often think artist are more scientific then most scientists. Just as you had shown.
    I was originally thinking you were going to fill your box frame with cement. Then I was wondering and thinking that is going to be one heavy bear to lift and move. But, then yiu did is so it would be hollow. That extra thinking I bet made it a lot more easier to move.
    Maybe this may help. When taking art and we would make plaster of Paris body cast, usually death mask of our self to later fill with clay and put into a kiln to harden the clay.
    Well when doing so, we would smear vaseline over our face with a shower Cape over our head so to help keep the plaster of Paris from sticking to us and make it easier to move.
    Maybe that may help you as well of give you other ideas so you don't have so much sticking problems with other projects.

    Love this build, but my first thought is... when the table is turned upside down to insert the foam it would be cool to add a couple small tube inserts at the highest/deepest part of the epoxy sections which would, after applying the concrete, leave small open cavities to insert a couple small LED lights which, when inverted would light the epoxy from the depths.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  5 років тому +2

      Thanks! I actually made some 3D printed LED modules to do exactly what you suggest, but the build was already so complicated I decided not to push it this time. Of course that just means I'll have to do a sequel to this 😉

    I learned about the Saw Stop in grd 9 shop class, its a life saver but can be a pain with glitches like this, our table needed 3 replacements due to misfires in the safety mechanism similar to this, and they were quite expensive to replace.
    But when it did that in an actual situation it saved my neighbors finger.
