Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road vs Chevy Colorado Z71 - sand and rock crawl test

- Our Tacoma crawl control video has received muck skepticism about the technology and the truck's capabilities. This video puts that argument to rest.

Crawl control is a legit system.
Jordan Yang yep, im sold
Yang true
Thanks for the comparison. Most of us aren't going to purchase the zr2 or TRD Pro; so I appreciate this comparison for the average consumer.
Yeah, I was waiting for a review like this. Most people are gonna buy Trd offroad or Z71. A lot of people have ZR2 in the mouth but no cash to buy it. :-/
Great video!! Thanks for making it. I’ve read where the Colorado has an automatic locking differential. That’s probably when it kicked in going up that rock.
Outstanding review, very knowledgeable and entertaining 👍🏻
good vid i have a 2002 tacoma 4wd standard with all trd goodies super charger etc.that blue def i have seen on you tube and it is said if you stock-up be careful the ingredients start breaking down right after it's produced .so you have to keep buying new as you go.
If you want apples to apples use the ZR2 Colorado..meant more for off road like the Tacoma Off Road.
Like how he had the wipers rubbing sand into the windshield the whole time.
Excellent trucks. Both of them.
Don't forget that rear locker
I love Tacoma
toyota is stepping their game up
Gas vs diesel. Long bed vs short bed.
I would have also liked to see both towing that boat too!!
I love toyota and Chevy, have for years.. both are Great trucks!!!
(Nothing beats an old Toyota 4runner off road tho!)
I went with the manual transmission in my 2017 TRD Off-road. A-TRAC and a selectable locker is way better.
I'd love to see a crawl control test on flat ground. All the sand burying tests are always on a hill =\
Should've been YES vs ZR2
I like that you removed the air dam and running boards, that made the comparison much better. Anyone headed off road in challenging terrain would do the same.
Quiero una tacoma lástima no la venden en mi país igual soy un toyotero y tengo una hilux Saludos desde Argentina
Great video! Thanks! A proper comparison is the PRO vs the ZR2 though.
nice comparison video. 6:58 what do we listen to in the Colorado while trail running? Def Leopard! Seems appropriate .
I love that you talked about that damn air dam. Chevy has made their trucks into floor sweepers both this one and the Silverado.... Single biggest reason I wouldn't buy one. (yes I know about the ZR2)
Ok I’ve driven in deep sand with my Colorado Z71 and have never gotten stuck! Granted I’ve never tried to, but air down to 12-15 psi and drive with common sense! That’s what crawl control is for, those without a kick if common sense or off road experience in sand.
The Chevy for me. So cool.
If you need crawl control you shouldn't be off road
I hate that trucks have become luxury/lifestyle/family vehicles because its made their prices raise to be ridiculous. They have like doubled or tripled in price over the last 20 years.
Cobb inflation
JuniorMagicains Sycaster. Not that much, more because its gone from work truck to luxury family vehicle so they raised the prices as they added features and popularity grew.
The crawl control is very gimmicky except in a few situations. It by no means competes with actual traction devices such as torsen, Detroit lockers, posi, etc, but it does seem to help in sand with the open diff.
When you thought you got stuck in the z71, the locker engaged and drove you through. The g80 takes, I believe, 150 rpm difference between the two wheels to energize, so you should know your equipment before hand to help maximize your truck.
I'm very glad you showed up TFL by actually removing the chin spoiler, thank you.
Lastly, diesel exhaust fluid is for NOx emissions not particulate emissions. Particulates are caught by the DPF and burned under regen, while the scr utilizes a catalyst that reacts with urea (DEF) and NOx to reduce NOx emissions.
You should have tried the Colorado ZR2 instead
Comparison vs ZR2 would be more accurate.
Not fair the ZR2 vs Tacoma perfect match
Like i said before all these guys got ZR2 in the mouth but no cash to buy one. They did a mainstream test on what the average 4x4 buyer is gonna get.
Tacoma Win!
ZR2 all the way
guy proulx i saw that and it's not good
Tacoma 100%
at 6.58 he was listening to def leopard on the radio
It seems like the Taco rules on this video, After watching this clip I went and get a taco exactly like the orange Taco here.
I like the utility of a truck better than an suv. I would take a new Colorado ZR2 diesel. Too bad new trucks are so damn expensive with all the electronics.
The stock tires on both those trucks are crap too.
Crawl control feature is nice but....what happens when that system stops working? Most of these situations a person who’s been off road and uses their head would never get into. Off roading is all bout knowing the limits of your skills and the trucks capability. I like the crawl feature but if you know how to drive off road you don’t need it. IMO
I agree its good to have but a good driver knows their driving limits and their vehicles limits as well.
Actually you don't need it if you know how to drive off road
ua-cam.com/video/SuDaalqR1mY/v-deo.html
Every vehicle can do it
Here you can see it too
ua-cam.com/video/_9mmajFmVcc/v-deo.html
I agree i watched the video of the guy getting out of sand with brake and throttle control, but it is great for people trying to get into off roading making mistakes that they werent aware of....its also a nice way of going downhill in an automatic
What happens when that system stops working? You fix it!
didnt mention you had to remove the side steps too. so two things you had to do just somewhat hang with the toyota.
That yota needs better tires if they were to use the ZR2
If this was a quality comparison then you would have used the Colorado ZR2 not the Z71. Then you would have had crawl control and two locking differentials
I got unstuck in sand in my z71 colorado. newb
Driver fail,
Why not the zr2 ?? Wow unbelievable!
Because the ZR2 competes with the TRD Pro, not the TRD Off-Road (the lower end off road model).
kercmerk it wasn't out when this video shot
Look, I really like the Tacoma and its the one I would buy but this crawl control heavy comparison was a little one sided but I see now this test was in response to criticism on another crawl control test. If doing apples to apples you probably should have put in the rear locker, since the z71 has one that can't be disengaged (auto locking)
You didnt even try going up the first set of rocks with the tacoma lol just trying to give the Chevy a chance
And again what is that 2010 Colorado worth compared to a 2010 Tacoma? It will be no different in 2018
guy proulx: Please educate me! I am genuinely interested in learning the facts about the "chevy tacoma" I call it like I see it. I know for a fact that the General and Toyota have been working together for years. so it's not a stretch to ask one to see the Toy in the Chev./GMC not to mention the Colorado/ Canyon/ Tacoma in general are very similar to each other unlike the full size trucks. I submit that one could park a GM and Toy of the same color nose to nose then take an out of focus photo of them, one would not be able to distinguish one from the other. But that's not to take away from either of the trucks, I like both of them both. But I do lean towards the Taco. I really like the baby Sierra it is a gorgeous truck, but as of late GM has dropped the ball on quality. So I would take the Taco. :) P.S. I really do want to know what you know about them.
Thanks for the info! Indeed I remember them. and I like the link info, it reminds me of that Michael Keaton movie Gun Ho 1986. Wouldn't be surprised to learn that it was about the NUMMI plant. So how do we explain the similarities between the two trucks? And on a side note! Sadly I think the antics of the UAW has caused the quality of any auto made or assembled in the USA to fall well below that of any made in and on the island of Japan. But still way better than any from Europe.
Yes that's it! I think the GM twins ( I like that moniker ) look a lot like the Tacoma. I word it like that as the Taco came first, knowing that GM much like FORD stoped making a small truck in the... I think 2000's
Get a different driver, its obvious he favored the Toyo.
I'm no expert! But I can clearly see that you're testing to Toyota's. One that shows it's true colors, and one that has been rebadged with Chevy logos. Chevy and Toyota have been in cahoots for decades so it's no surprise to see that the small Chevy Is simply a Toyota Tacoma with new badging, of course some parts changed out here And there I suspect the engine transmission transfer case.
Hey! I don't do much commenting on youtube so please see my new comment.
Seems as if there was a little bias on the presnters part
He forgot to mention the Toyota will take 10 years before it starts rusting and the Chevy will take 10 minutes....lol.
Camdex blog.caranddriver.com/690000-toyota-tacomas-recalled-for-leaf-springs-that-could-snap-damage-fuel-tank-and-brake-line/
That has nothing to do with rust and I'd still buy the TRD and just take it in for the recall. What GM has never had a recall....? Get real.
You get real, and open your eyes and read the article, it's all about rust that caused all the failures , facts not fake news, toyotas doesn't last forever, not reliability as many think they are, plus i ain't no chevy guy either.
As someone who favors Japanese cars, this is absolutely not true. For whatever reason, Rams do rust quickly, but Chevys and Fords last longer as far as sheet metal is concerned. Mechanically - not so much.
Alexander Golubev Jr - Thats not true here in the midwest. Chevy anything especially trucks are the worst for rust. Even our 2012 and 2013 company trucks which get washed and cleaned often are already starting to rust. This is the same when I got to dealerships and look at used trucks. Chevys always have the most rust.
Wtf really serious offroad hahaha ik people with drive ways rougher then that
That Tacoma looks great Colorado not so much
the z71 offroad package comes with a G80 locking rear differential thats why i would buy gmc chevy
And the manual transmission Tacoma TRD Off-road comes with an E-locker... Much better.
AK49Watson electronic lockers are not better, by the time you engage that electronic locker you're already stuck
Yeah. Ok.
AK49Watson you can see the g80 locker work in the video when he's on the rocks it's spins a little and when it locks it climbs right up
I've done enough hardcore wheeling to know the G80 is complete shit. My channel backs it up. Have a nice day.
shit tires on both
My Thoughts Also I Changed my Tires out years ago to BF Goodrich All Terrain KO'S the Stock Tires are Car Highway Tires and get stuck in an inch of Snow
That is a good thing. I saw many other comparison and they always use the cheapest or wrong tire in the Toyota while the others trucks use the right tires.
Tacoma has crushed the Chevy as usual.
Thats kind of lame that the computer on the tacoma takes over everything in crawl control. It takes the fun out of it. Sure it works, but its no fun
guy proulx Its just a bitch system to even have on an "offroad" truck not to mention they had to use it twice in this video on easy ass trails.
wrong test. it is like testing BMW M3 and Audi A4 off course the M3 is better . It should be TRD Pro vs ZR2
I hate both of these utes equally and yet even I can see this is fairly biased
Ooooo yeah. How about them training wheels, sorry I mean crawl control.
Any off road enthusiast would tell you this guy played a favor for Tacoma. It’s a fair match from truck to truck only the way you off road and the way this guy demonstrated the z71 was a sad show compared to what that truck can really do. Take the Tacoma for instance he could have gotten that truck out without the use of crawl control. He could have rocked that baby out with reverse and throwing the front stearing wheel from left to right creating a rock and that truck would have moved out. Same thing with z71 he never even went reverse! You have to roll reverse and rock yourself out with the stearing for traction. Crawl control I’m sure works fine. I’m just saying I would have gotten that z71 out. I would have never had to let air out if it’s tires. You don’t get stuck then keep going in that direction and say awe bummer must take some air out now. You roll reverse then rock your tires out with your steering column. This guy played z71
This guy works for Toyota.
...apples to apples?? 🍎
Compare it to a ZR2..!!
Duh..!!!
At the time this was shot, neither the ZR2 nor the TRD PRO were available. So actually, TRD Off-Road vs Z71 is indeed a fair comparison. And the Z71 is more expensive. The ZR2 is ever MORE expensive so you really need to get your trims straight.
thedriversseat
My apologies...
@thedriversseat I call BS on that statement. The cheapest advertized new TRD Offroad in my area(Minneapolis, MN) is advertised at $37,455(auto trans), while the cheapest new gas Z71(which comes with the auto locking diff just like the diesel) is adverised at $31,977. The cheapest new diesel Z71 $36,685. That's a $6,000 difference if you are comparing apples to apples, and even the diesel version is almost $1K cheaper. Your reply, right here, clearly shows you are biased, because you can't even tell your viewers the truth about pricing. The Taco's MSRP is $400 less, but we are talking about real world prices where Chevy always has great deals and Taco's sell at or even above MSRP.
Toyota is a good rig don't get me wrong. But this video don't show much... You seam hung up on crawl control... it's just a system for people who don't know how to drive.
why no ZR2?? you said apples to apples and took a stock z71... so far the video seems biased to Toyota.
For everyday usability Z1 is better - smooth and fast.
This is dumb you are comparing Apple's to oranges. You should have gotten the zr2 instead. Bad review of trucks thumbs down
Hugo Paz Z71 vs TRD Off Road is fair, if you want the ZR2 compared, it would face off the TRD Pro. Not much of difference for the Toyota though.
Hugo Paz no, they are equivalent. If you got the ZR-2 then youd have to compare it to the TRD Pro. Z-71 and the TRD 4x4 are direct competition, while the Zr-2 competes with te TRD Pro.
I agree they are not equivalent, the Z71 is not really an off-road package despite its claims ... the ride height is the biggest issue
g496r500t the Z71 competes with the TRD 4x4, the Zr2 competes with the TRD Pro. These two are dorect competitors.
this is why there is a ZR2 and a shorter bed. thats not fair. long bed is gonna lose off road dumb af test
toyota is toyota
No yota TuRD fer me -
Ford Ranger and Hilux takes em both....
Crawl control is serious stuff
The Taco kicked that Colorados ass. But jeeps would put these two to shame
PrestigeWorldWild except in Reliability
TimmyTeaBag true. Jeep has that death wobble going when they hit a certain mileage
your crawl control was used in reverse down hill ... what a cheat ....
It's clear you prefer the Toyota..... No thank you
The guy had no idea what he was talking about you buy a truck to drive not the crawl. Lol.
Could Chevy make the Colorado look more boring? It's 2018 ffs, not 1986.
if you drive a chev you failed. absolute crap. another failed attempt in the category. I've a 2015 taco and it will run circles around chev. where will the chev be after 5 years? where will the taco be? after 3.5 years my tacoma is still booked at $33000. chev, never. poor investment.
Buying cars is not an investment, an the Colorado is way more pleasing to drive on the road(where we all drive 99% of the time).
Yep. Very pleasing when the interior falls apart and the paint rubs off the dash.
Boring
Totally unnecesary toyota just make the old fashion self diggout on a push of a bottom if you know how to drive you don't need that bottom as you can see it on this video
ua-cam.com/video/SuDaalqR1mY/v-deo.html
Here you can see it too
ua-cam.com/video/_9mmajFmVcc/v-deo.html
Dude your videos are a joke. Why no ZR2 vs Trd pro? Oh yeah bc the Taco losses easy.I thought this was a independent shootout not a Toyota commercial.
Chevy definitely the better looking truck
looks are subjective. The colorado is nice but I personally prefer the looks of the tacoma.
Also personally like the look of the tacoma.
I have the tacoma and it doesn't rake down like the Chevy which looks bad
Looks are subjective but I do have the name of a good optometrist on the NW Indiana area.
R u blind colorado is ugly people with working eyes know Tacoma look nice legit capable rugged and tough colorado looks fragile no comparison
Not apples to apples zr2 would be equal.
full of shit how much is Toyota paying you for this appliance light brake and torque would have got out of that you're being paid by Toyota this is not a fair video
the king Busted. They paid us $1Million. Wouldn’t you take $1M to shoot a video?
This video is BULLSHIT!! It's not apples to apples!
he sucks at off road. what a newb
I would take the Colorado. The taco looks ugly and plastic. My last taco was a 2016 and never again will I own one again. Transmission failed at 43k then the engine started to tick and consume oil. Dealer said it need a new engine.
guy proulx My neighbor just bought 2017 taco and it did the same this as the Colorado. Toyota claim that the radiator hoses weren’t clamped down. It’s now sitting there waiting for a new engine since she drove it home that way. We live 2 hours from the closes Toyota
I’m a huge Toyota fan (I have a 3rd Gen 4Runner with 266,000+ miles on it), but that Colorado - with the Diesel and front, center, and rear locking diffs - is incredibly capable and attractive as an overlanding platform.
I am a Toyota guy, in part, because more of it is made and assembled in the U.S.
But I have to admit the Chevy is looking pretty good!
It will be interesting going forward to see how reliable the Colorado is.
Awesome video, it is nice to see a video about the z71 and offroad. Most vidies is with the pro and zr2
My really love the 2017 Tacoma off-road that I purchased it was light years ahead of the newer Silverado I had
Don't be mad he purchased the better truck. You could always trade in your Chevy and step up to an actual off road truck :)
Ted yellowstone if he
Both trucks perform exceptionally well, and really it depends on what you're looking for in a truck.
Those of you that think that you can mimic Crawl Control using light throttle clearly do not understand how it works. You cannot individually detect slippage thousands of times per second in each individual wheel, and apply brake force to each wheel at different rates simultaneously by using "light throttle". Is it a perfect system? No, not at all. Is it far superior to going out there hoping to rely on "light throttle" to try and get yourself out of sand? You're damn right it is.
I would say the problem with this video is the fact he didn't try light throttle when attempting to get out. Crawl Control is neat, but it's kind of hard to say he "needed" crawl control when he didn't attempt to get out the proper way. Granted I'm pretty sure half the point of crawl control is to help people who don't know what they're doing.
My 2010 taco is a workhorse. I don’t think I’ll buy anything newer than a 2016 tacoma. I just hate all the technology. I like my trucks simple and tough as hell.
Same. I ended up getting the sr5 w/TRD sport package and used the money I saved for a 3" lift kit, BFG ko2's and 16" offroad wheels. No need for all the fancy electronics.
Buy a manual Taco. Upgraded interior and styling but still the same old truck. No push button, no crawl control.
I sold my 2010 taco 6spd manual 4x4 trd OR 1gr (very rare combo mind you) because it got terrible gas mileage and was always getting things replaced under warranty. Even the rear springs were tsb'd and still squealed like a pig. Read diff leaked worse than Hillary Clinton's mouth drool after she takes her sedatives to sleep with Bill.
My 2000 prerunner is my daily and my weekend toy. People dropping 40grand for crawl control and a TRD badge just to visit places I manage to get to with 2wd and an open diff. Tacos are like a fine wine or scotch....better with age.
2016 has all the newer gadgets you see in the video. 2015 and down is your gen Tacoma. I wish TRD still offered a supercharger for these trucks. I was going to buy one for that reason but got in too late for it.
The craw control was awesome
Wow!!! I can’t believe it!! A not biased review. Thanks for a realistic and sincere review. And I think the Colorado will be a good contender. Regarding reliability just remember it is a Isuzu truck so it will be very good.
You never put the front or rear end lockers on the Colorado why
Hey amigo, just so you know, all 4/4 have crawl control... but it is a skill of the driver 😎😋😋
Great video, the trd-off road is a lot more set up for off road use, because the z71 is mainly a suspension package. The z71 would be a lot better for the occasional light off road user because of the fuel economy, ride, and automatic locking rear diff.
I drive a 2011 avalanche and have seen these clips of the crawl control before..... This dude has a lead block on his foot.... My 6000 lbs truck can crawl out of a rut and has pulled out more than one TRD off the beach.... Check the clip of the dude in the Dodge .... Cool feature wish they gave the chevy a chance
Tacoma TRD Offroad 4x4 hands down. That Rear Locking differential is worth its weight in gold.
Taco Trek Zr2 Colorado has front and rear lockers.Yota don't want any.
Zachary Sheppard My friends Colorado has lockers but they fail to engage Chevy needs to find a fix for there faulty system
all z-71 trucks have a rear locker, its called an Eaton g-80 automatic locker.
The Chevys require you to engage the lockers and then drive, they lock after the truck begins to move.
Zachary Sheppard They are auto lockers. Complete garbage compared to selectable lockers. With auto lockers they can engage in snow when you dont want them too. You cant compare to a tacoma.
This is the only channel I've seen that favoured the Tacoma over the Colorado. Nice to see different views both seem to be really great trucks. Can't wait to see what Ford does when they reintroduce the ranger.
I’d love to see a gas vs gas comparison. Everything is Toyota gas vs this Chevy diesel
Agree with previous post comparing Apple's to Apple's you would have used the Zr2 instead.
If crawl control can get a truck unstuck, so can a driver who doesn’t mash the gas to the floor in a panic, or to help sell crawl control. Both are great trucks, I seriously think they are so close people should buy based on which they like the looks of better.
