Both mid size trucks are awesome. Truck enthusiasts should really appreciate all the type of trucks we have now, instead of bashing one another. What a time to be alive
Plus 10. Competition between manufacturers makes them improve the product, the consumer wins. The Toya is a nice truck, I own a ZR and I'm looking forward to the new Ford Ranger.
Intelligent comment and reply by Steven. Clearly you don't belong here. ZR2 pretty much destroys the Taco, but things will get really interesting when the Ranger Raptor comes out
Andy Yang well said my brother! You got some Irish in you? But you do talk good , not me, I’m too much a irish prick🍀 I’ve had bad luck with Chevy trucks and ford mustangs! Been on toyotas since 1983, been real happy with them. Here they are. 1983 =254000 1995=96000(great truck wish I didn’t sell)2001 260000 so far( hunting rig) tough great truck) 2018 tacoma OffRd)20/8 four runner. All great trucks! Never buy anything else🍀
I drove both...ZR2 duramax and TRD Pro.... extensively. I’ve owned both Chevrolet and Toyota TRUCKS in the past. For me, the ZR2 was the easy choice in every category. The ZR2 is currently superior in my honest opinion.
THANK YOU for comparing the V6 Colorado with the Tacoma. You guys are seriously the first ones to actually compare the two V6 engines. Really solid video!
I must say I was disappointed when I bought my 2017 TRD offroad when it came to the tires but after an upgrade I couldn't be more happy! Love this truck! That ZR2 thought looking pretty good! Competition drives innovation so hopefully we see more of that!
I test drove both and that is the best way to experience the difference. I bought the ZR2 for many reasons over several trucks besides the Tacoma. Excellent compilation video on the subject though. You buy a truck that meets your needs and I don't see a reason to bash someone for buying on those reasons. You have to live with what you buy and hopefully you bought it for yourself and not because someone told you one was cooler or better than another. Both are great trucks.
2001 Toyota SR5 Tacoma 2 wheel drive. 440,000 miles on it. Only issue we have had with it is as listed: -Radiator was leaking -Bad spark plugs -Minor oil leak. -Paint is coming off -Radio went out -New fuel pump Everything else is stock on the truck. I do not see any other truck lasting that long (still maintaining stock) besides the old ford diesels.
Krystof the better tired are an option and none of the reviewers ever seem to get a tester with them for some reason but both 2020 TRD pros I’ve looked at both had the upgraded tires-Goodyear wrangler duratracs
I owned a 2017 Tacoma Off-road (same engine as Pro) for 11 months, got tired of it always shifting against the wind and when going up low grade hills, MPG was horrible. I traded it for a ZR2 Diesel, WOW, couldn’t be happier!!
I did the same thing. I had a fully loaded 2019 taco TRD off road. Didn't like the seating position (very uncomfortable), suspension beats you up ( i drive for long periods), gas mileage is crap (20mpg on the highway), transmission hunts gears when going up hills or when you have a load, the rear end is noisy, everyone i called with Bluetooth complain about they could barely hear me. I was glad when I sold it. Now with my ZR2 diesel it's way more comfortable( my back it's not sore when driving), the gas mileage is way better (7 mpg better in the highway), it's smooth on the road, more room in the rear for my kids.
all you pay for is some interior, cosmetics and a different skidplate and better suspension! Otherwise they could be using just a 2017 offroad but that doesnt get the attention like a trd pro lol
The Pro is better at speed where as the OR beats the crap out of you at 20 mph when it gets rough. If your going to stay stock and not modify the the Pro is worth it.
@@jordanyang3066 You must be thinking of the TRD Sport, the OR is by far one of the smoothest riding Trims. The sports are very uncomfortable, as are the SR5's.
@@chevid9015 I recently bought a 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport. I test drove a new 2019 OR 4Runner, new 2019 OR Tacoma, new 2018 OR Tacoma and used 2017 OR Tacoma. Although its a matter of opinion, to me the Sport felt much smoother on-road, turned better and even accelerated better. I also love the scoop, painted fenders and bumpers. The overall majority of people who buy these trucks will never need that rear locker on the OR. It was a hard decision but I'm very happy with it. I've already done some off-roading , up and done steep hills, mud and trails around Nevada, and the Sport did them easily, and that's with the stock all season Toyo A30 Tires on 4H. I havent even needed 4L and neither will the majority of people who buy these.
Bought the 2018 zr2 with diesel engine. Its a tough truck, and nimble enough to park in town. The options and infotainment are all super sweet. Taken her up the mountain a few times in snow and slush and some flooded paved roads. My favorite thing is that the front tires sling the mud and water all over the truck when 4x4 ing. Way more fun than my silverado 1500
I bought a 2016 Colorado and traded in my 01 Tacoma with 280,000. I kinda wish I bought a Tacoma it was about the same price new as my truck and I'm having issues with my Chevy. I just wanted to try something new and not be bias and my Tacoma was done and I needed a truck. I do love my Colorado but I miss my old truck too and the Chevy scares me abit having issues already under 30k.
Chris Taylor I really wouldn't worry too much to be honest. Competition has honed this two types of trucks to quiet a fine degree. I was in a similar situation like yours, I had purchased a 2016 Tacoma off-road QB SB 4x4 but unfortunately I picked up a lemon. I had nonstop tranny issues and even my leaf springs were having some serious issues with staying in place. I do not however blame Toyota, I blame luck of the draw. All warranty work aside the truck was great. I did regret not going with the Colorado too. I put 21,000 km on the truck and traded it in for something with more overall power and space (Ford F150, great truck at 25,000km btw). I do miss having a slightly smaller truck but my current 5.0 V8 rigs gas is on par ad often better than my '16 taco lol.
Great video, I love the comparison between the two. I drove a 1995 s10 ZR2 for 12 years with the 4.3l engine. I received 16-19 mpg with 32" off road tires on and had more torque than the 3.6l (if using current 4.3). I don't know why they don't use it in this truck, it seems it would get very similar mpg figures but have more torque. The weak points of my '95 ZR2 were: 1) Front end had to be changed every 50, 000 km (tie rods, ball joints, pitman arm, idler arm) 2) There were so many bangs and rattles in the interior that drove me nuts. 3) Was a little heavy and could of used more power I hope they have fixed these short comings and if so I would love to get back into the mid-size market due to their mobility in the city and trail.
Own a 2017 TRD pro. My favorite thing about it that I don’t get from others is that it just feels like a truck. It’s stout, looks the part and feels like a sturdy, tough pick up. I don’t need it to fly down the highway, I don’t need all of the added creature comforts, it has most of them and they’re nice but it’s just built sound like an old truck. I don’t like jacking up my trucks so since the fox suspension was already there I’ve been more then pleased, ecstatic if anything that, that’s was included. Only burden is going on trips with passengers as the rear of the cab isn’t quite a large luxurious space haha. But I use the truck for everything. It’s my work truck, my daily driver and my weekend warrior. It keeps up with everything I do in my day to day. The two biggest set backs here and one isn’t per Toyota is those god awful tires. I’ve had 2 blow out on me within 10k miles. Right between the tread. They are pretty terrible. Waiting to slap on the KO2s here soon. It’s a disappointment Toyota equips these things with them because the truck is meant for so much more. Second is the entune. What an excuse for a head unit. The Bluetooth works fine, but just put the CarPlay in like every other manufacture. I continue to use my phone for map services when I commute. We started the business with s10’s and while not the nicest those trucks drove and drove, was looking forward to upgrading to the Colorado but how could you deny the simplicity and excitingness of these new Tacoma’s. What a fun truck.
I purchased a new 2009 tacoma in late 2008. It still runs like it's new and I wouldn't trade it for anything on the road now. Haven't had a single problem in almost ten years! Its a pleasure to work on as far as maintenance. They are very well thought out and designed for long life. Also they are more USA built than many us car companies these days.
Just traded in my 17 year old tacoma for a new 2018 TRD off-road. The old girl had 220,000 miles with ZERO mechanical issues in its lifetime. Bottom Line: The Tacoma's have a proven record of reliability. The Chevy, while improving in recent years, still has a long way to go.
I bought a new Tacoma TRD 4dr 4wd fully loaded in ‘05. If I hadn’t hit a deer in ‘13 with 186k... it would still be my daily driver. Only thing aside from reg maintenance I had to do was timing belt, under-drive pulley and with Toyota’s proven reliability and desirable for off-road minded people is a no brainer. I would never buy a new model much less a GM. Compare the 2 with the available aftermarket parts available and it’s obvious who is on there a game. I also had and still do an 2007 FJ Cruiser TRD which uses the same drivetrain. Yes it is heavier and gets 15 -21 mpg with 110k on it, aside from timing belt and regular maintenance the motor is stock. That’s also on 33” M/T’s, All-Pro Uniball UCA’s, 3” lift and Fox coilovers with triple bypass shocks.
Just traded my 13 year old Colorado with 200k miles in on a new Colorado. Only problems I ever had with drive train was carbon on the throttle body and a purge valve solenoid. Each person's experience is different and anecdotal evidence doesn't mean a damn thing.
they are kill mid size market. They are also the valued much higher in resale value. But your are correct, if Toyota offered a diesel it would be awesome.
We have a Chevy and a Toyota. While historically I'd take a Toyota, I think I'd choose the Colorado in this case. Front lockers are the bomb. And as I get older, getting in easily and then being comfortable are increasingly important!
Cool Rush shirt !I have the cement Taco Pro in Cement. I love the truck, and it stands out for sure. I still do not understand why Toyota does not include the following at this price point:- Power drivers seat- Key fob remote start(for those cold winter mornings)- Mud flaps Also, they really need to have the transmission shift points adjusted to where you feel the 278 horsepower. You don't feel it until you really get into it. I know its designed to save fuel, but when you are driving on a slight grade on the highway, it bogs down and then shifts violently into a higher gear. I have to use the transmission power switch on the highway. Other than that, I am totally pleased with the Taco Pro. Thanks for the great comparison.
Nice Rush shirt, ❤ I was just talking to a guy who owns a Transmission Shop and asked him what he sees the most and the least. He sees Chevy's the most and Toyota's the least, enough said. When that warranty runs out I'd rather have the Toyota. Sad but true.
Another great video. I looked at both and went with the 2018 ZR2. Because of price and just the total package. It has everything that the Taco has and more at a lower price. Mine even came with the Cat-Back single exit exhaust system the the polished tip with the Chevy emblem. And it still came in over two thousand less than the TRD Pro. Listen. Back in the day, my buddies and I would drive tacos everywhere. They were our choice. You have to just get over the fan club mentality and just check out the contender. I for one DO NOT care about resale value, because I simply hold onto my vehicles. Just open your mind and free yourself. Take the red pill. 😉
ZR2 is missing push button start and does not have auto dimming and adaptive cruise control. Tacoma also has the howling diff problem. The upgraded exhaust I believe adds 10HP so you have a much better power plant at about 318HP. The Tacoma tows 6800 instead of only 5000Lbs and the Taco beats it for ground clearance in every aspect and its smaller for tight trails. The ZR2 does have its disadvantages but I would have taken the ZR2 just for the power alone and better throttle response but to say it has everything the Taco has is not being honest.
Thomas Paul if your going to be towing 5000 pounds or more you would be dumb to buy either of these trucks. They are midsize get a half ton or 3/4 if your going to be towing.
Well you might still win on the resale value. In a Facebook group for the new Colorado, a guy sold his diesel for $33k and bought it originally for $34k. Not bad, it was an auction though. Not a ZR2 either, but you should expect it to resell higher with one than the other Colorados.
I’m glad for the Tacoma resale value. Traded in my gutless 2016 Tacoma for a Silverado. Now I don’t have to be in 3rd gear to maintain the speed limit on mountain roads. Oh, and the Taco had its leaking transfer case replaced under warranty at about 3k miles.
My 07 taco with 236K miles is still running strong AF and has original everything. It’s a beast in the mud and does more than I expect it to. I’ll be a toyota customer for life. My mom had a 97 rav4 with over 200K miles, also with 0 mechanical issues before she sold it. I’m sure it’s still out there doing it’s thing. On a side note, my dad drives an 01 GMC Sierra, single cab short bed, V6 vortex 4x4 and that thing has a rough 380K miles on it. He did replace the transmission once because he uses it to haul heavy loads often. That truck is also a beast in the mud and is still running strong. My point is, Chevy/gmc and toyota both make great trucks and you really can’t go wrong with either, just make sure they’re 4x4 and they’ll hold their value. When it’s all said and done, both companies make great trucks and you can’t go wrong with either. Just don’t go dodge or Ford.
I just bought a new 2018 Tacoma. I should get it tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to it. The dealer has always been nice and professional To--to me. I wish him well!!!
I've been offroading Toyota 4x4s for over 35 years. Had sticks & automatics, TRD & non TRD. Seen Fords, Chevys, jeeps etc break under conditions where the Toyotas never failed. Want to get backcountry and back with far less chance of a failure? Toyota. There's a reason Toyota kicks ass in resale, and is the most successful 4x4 in the world. :)
And in the u.s we politicians the don't seem to understand the difference between fuel economy and emissions. I would rather have a diesel that gets twice the gas mileage pollutes a quarter more. Because increase fuel economy will pollute less because less fuel is being burned.
Maybe add a bigger turbo to the diesel for better performance without hurting emissions. Then, add another gear to the transmission for better fuel economy.
I have a 2018 ZR2 with the 3.6 V6 and it's 0 to 60 is 7 seconds, 2 seconds faster than the ZR2 Diesel and nearly 3 seconds faster than the Toyota V6. I love this truck!
The Colorado wins in my book. The new Tacoma drives horribly. Between being under powered and constantly looking for the right gear the Tacoma is a horrible drive. In 2017 the amount of creature comforts you don't get in a Tacoma that you can get in the Colorado is crazy. When we were faced with the decision we chose Colorado Z71. I wish we would have waited for zr2!!
People use the Taco for overlanding excursions for very specific reasons. When you are in the middle of no where hours from the nearest help the Yota won't let you down. You will get to destination the only real problem I see off the lot as mentioned is the tires but it's a issue everyone that off road knows going forward that they will be changing them out. Plus the zr2 looked like it absorbed a lot of blows from the rocks on the rear suspension that's never a good thing. Clearance is a big thing for off road vehicles don't matter how many lockers you have if you get high centered due to your clearance.
ive used a 2015 colorado for overlanding since early 2015, its had zero issues. Goes everywhere my buddies toyota goes. infact the only truck that has had any issues out on the trails in northern ontario, the toyota. I love both trucks dont get me wrong but this whole "toyota reliability" no longer plays as big a factor as it used to.
Andrew C 2015 is still a fairly new vehicle give it some time and if I still see the zr2 in 25+ years offroading I'll take back my statement. I still see 85 Yotas on the beach all the time down here in Texas still getting it. Not saying it's a the zr2 is a horrible truck it has a lot going for it but it does have a good while till it will earn the right to be said it's as reliable as a Toyota.
Same here. That custom Toyota sure was bad ass. I bought a black TRD Off Road back in August 2018. Love my truck! Was thinking of getting TRD Pro when I can afford it. I will keep it for at least 10 years or until it breaks. LoL
Guy in high school had that one, put a 350 in it. Had a custom sticker in the back window "the heartbeat of Japan" never forgot that. Lol. Truck was badass!!!
Nice review guys. I bought a new Tacoma off-road 2 years ago (2018). I don't think I will be going for another one in 2022. I keep my daily drivers for ~4 years. Tacoma has 2 things going against it: 1) lots of electrical issues with my truck. I was unpleasantly surprised with lack of reliability on my Tacoma. Maybe I got a lemon, I don't now, but bad dealer experience did not help either. 2) that engine is a car engine in a truck body. It struggles a lot to move the truck around. I am not the only one who noticed that. I had a couple guys from work test drive Tacoma and pick Chevy just because of the engine. My transmission gets stuck in 4th gear on a regular basis. If I put it in cruise control it will constantly shift and be challenged even at smallest incline. Low to mid end torque is non-existent. The truck is very well built mechanically. But electrically it has issues as I mentioned. It seems to me that Toyota "feel a sleep behind the wheel" with respect to the Tacoma. I will be looking hard into Jeep, Chevy and Ford in couple of years.
That was my first vehicle in high school. I forever regret getting rid of it back then. Not long after trading it in, the person that bought it wrecked it. Saw it sitting in the junk yard and was heart broken.
I bought a new Tacoma Sport in 2016. Except for the month it sat at the dealership waiting for a recall to be performed, it's been a good truck. Gets about 19 mpg around town now. I like pretty much everything about it. I test drove the Chevy and the Honda before buying and I liked this one best.
I bought a 2017 TRD off-road not the pro basically the same truck just cheaper. It's my first Toyota ever and I absolutely love it. it tows my utility trailer and jet skis with no issue. there's plenty of power it just revs at higher RPM could it use little bit lower RPM grunt sure. I find a comfortable then again I'm not big guy by any means. and for what I use it for light trail riding for hunting and fishing and going on the beach for surf fishing it does it great. and the reliability and resale value is absolute tops the only other vehicle they can equal resale value is a Jeep Wrangler. I even test-drove the Colorado before purchasing the Tacoma. what turned me off was looks and the interior still looks like it's from 1990 and honestly the reliability is just not there. I watched my dad go through multiple headaches with his 2011 Silverado. just adding a little bit more tidbit of information if you're buying a midsize truck and towing horse trailers or getting close to Max towing capacity you should have bought a full size. midsize trucks are not made for that even the Colorado with a diesel.
"and the reliability and resale value is absolute tops the only other vehicle they can equal resale value is a Jeep Wrangler. I even test-drove the Colorado before purchasing the Tacoma. what turned me off was looks and the interior still looks like it's from 1990 and honestly the reliability is just not there." LOL did you even do any research before you bought your truck? The 3rd gen Tacoma has been rated as the "Least Reliable Midsize Truck" the last two years by Consumer Reports. Below the Chevy Colorado and below the GMC Canyon. It's been the subject of two major recalls, one for faulty crank position sensors that fail and either cause the truck to stall or leave the truck completely stranded on the side of the road. That recall didn't address the issue of engine hesitation either. The second absolutely massive recall was for rear axles that leak differential fluid. The leak is so bad in some cases, that the rear differential either burns up or locks up, causing a potentially deadly crash. These problematic axles are being supplied by a Hino plant in Thailand. The previous, problem-free axles were being made in the US. Gotta save money I guess? The axle recall didn't address the widespread issue of howling rear differentials that in some cases howl so loud, you can hear it over the radio at highway speeds. And then there's the ongoing issues with the 3rd gen's automatic transmission that Toyota hasn't issued a recall for, but has unsuccessfully attempt to address with software updates that you need to convince your dealer to perform. Some owners had improvements, other owners had the updates make shifting issues worse. You can go for the manual transmission, but that doesn't guarantee problem-free ownership. That transmission has had issues with the gear selector being stuck in a certain gear and is famous for throwout bearings going bad prematurely.
Colorado wins in every way. Loved how they criticized the mpg on the Colorado but didn't SHOW IT during their testing. I also liked how Nathan DROVE OFF THE TRAIL AND AROUND THE ROCKS at the 8:00 mark and the camera cut away, Colorado went over the rocks no problem. These trucks AREN'T DIFFERENT they are direct competitors, it's just that the Colorado is better by a mile.
Ivan Miranda he is talking about what the real mpg is not the epa set numbers. I didnt see the off-road mpg but for towing they got almost exactly the same colorado 5.2 and taco 5.1 mpg’s
And my dad has a 300k 5.3L Silverado with nothing but standard maintenance. Taco gets beat in every category all the fanboys...but but but resale value. Lol
My father has a 1990 chevy stepside with the 5.7 liter v/8 it has 350567 k miles that has both oem transmission and motor. Will a Toyota last 28 yrs like a Chevrolet.NOTTT
I have a 2000 zr2 s10....207,000 miles on it as of now...it's my only vehicle and no major issues yet. the fender is starting to rust out but the frame is still solid..
You can tell the Tacoma Rear End was built for Off Road. The lower shock mounts are nicely tucked away to keep them free of rock bashing. The ZR2 lower rear shock mounts hang like a inch or two below the rear, also placed in the middle. Bash those on a rock and you'll be towing it home...
Bought a 2019 Trd 4x4 for Father’s Day and it sucks compared to my 1998 4 cylinder Tacoma, my 2019 is horrible on gas and response power currently trying to sell my 2019 Tacoma but my 1998 Tacoma is a beast it has 250,000 miles on it and it has way more power , they just don’t make em like they use too💯💯💯💯💯🙁
You must live in the middle of a desert. One winter in the North and that legendary Toyota rust rot starts eating the frame and bed alive. Not to mention that weak reverse-cut high pinion rear diff might as well be made of glass. Oh and the 3rd gen Tacoma has been Consumer Report's "least reliable midsize truck" the last two years... can't kill them... uh huh...
Great comparison! Here's my truck buying list if I ever get one: If I can get by with a midsize, Tacoma manual diesel. (These will soon be a thing, if the rumour mill is to be believed.) If it has to be a fullsize, Tundra or Kneesan, GM, Ford, and lastly Fiat.
Agree. They say the new Tacoma's have 50 more HP. But in the long haul the 4.0L will do better a last longer. You can modify the 4.0L and easy get 30 more HP without damaging original stock.
My Mallett blower and 3 inch Catback can blow your minds. @2018 Colorado goes from 120km to 252 in a very small amount of time. 8 speed! The only one in ALBERTA. Good fun. Guess whatIi used to do? Toolmaker. I build the Dies that stamp out this Trucks parts. I see all the silent recalls. My Third Colorado does all that and a bag of chips. Heated Seats work just fine!
Off the factory floor the ZR2 is the better and more capable truck. If you intend to keep it stock the ZR2 would by my choice. However if you like to mod, add aftermarket parts then the Tacoma is the better choice. There is so much more aftermarket support for the Tacoma and the community is huge. If that's the case my recommendation would just be to get a TRD Off Road and mod to your hearts content. You won't feel so guilty about cutting up your bumper or throwing away the stock suspension. Plus money saved could go towards a nice set of Kings :D
It’s easier to drive a trailer if you utilize the cruise control more often. I don’t even press the throttle much, just press up on cruise control and it’ll shift perfectly. I have a 2017 Chevy Colorado Z71 off road, V6; love it!
Cool video. I have a blast watching these videos that you post. Thanks. It keeps me sane during the Corona thing. I am in my 60's and have had dozens of trucks in my life. These videos are OUTSTANDING!!
Been a TFL fan for a while, Is it me or is the Production value on this video higher than usual. Not sure what is different, but the quality of the video production seems above average. Keep up the great content.
Both are cool but sorry if I'm buying a mid size, the Yota gets my pay check all day! Toyota = Resale and reliability! IMOP Chevy as of late( the last 30 years) products are just garbage ! LS motors are the only exception.
These are some sick trucks! I really miss driving my V6 96 Toyota Tacoma, 5 nights ago I slid in the rain and rolled it over and fell in a muddy ditch crushing my side of the roof, the whole left side was crushed. I had Firestone tires that weren't too bad but I guess it got slick to the point where it just slid in the rain. Thankfully I walked away without a bruise, and was able to drive it back home.
Daywalker_27 Id like to see where they got these reviews. The tocoma is basically the same as the last model. And I've never seen their so called transmission problems with Chrysler either. Thats a really vague and bad review.
THE SQUAD 2 yeah I traded in my 03 suburban 3/4 ton which I bought new.... it had 190k miles on it and had originally brakes, spark plugs, exhaust and shocks. Great truck.
The Colorados transmission is notorious for eventual hard shifting. Had had a chance to test drive a 2020 model zr2, only had 7 mile on it when i had driven it, after a few blocks i felt a hard upshift in the trans, felt like the thing was broken.
it's called power yours shifts like a womans car i have a zr2 my nephew has a toy pro in real off roading i have to pull him out a lot lockers front and rear make a big difference and the power don't sound like a lot more but the difference is astounding in real life
Robert Blackford You’re stuck in the past. Every source today for reliability ranks the Colorado higher than the Tacoma. Check carcomplaints.com. Check owner reviews. Check recalls. Check expert reviews. Check any sources you want. The only people who think the Tacoma is more reliable is people who think the current truck is the same as the old trucks. Come at me with facts not hearsay and perceptions.
I own a 04 Colorado never replaced anything just the battery knock on wood, only thing I did get were electrical issues usually they would fix themselves lol but tbh it's a pretty solid truck I have the z71 and it does well on off road for it to be a 14year old truck
Checking the used market for 10 year old trucks, one will not find many S10/Canyon/Colorado's that are in high demand. What will happen in another 10 years? The ZR2 looks like a great truck today, but how much are those fancy parts to replace when they've been used up.
At least around here the 1st generation canyons and Colorados are holding there value quite well keeping around the same price as full size trucks. S10s on the other hand are just cheap but easy to work on so there a ok truck if your up for maintenance.
Fuel econ on the Diesel is awesome. They, GM, sand bagged the hell out of the mileage stats on the Diesel. 19/23. Hell I'm getting 23/29 with my ZR2 Diesel. After a 5,000 mile break-in the mileage seems to get better and better...
nah that chevy has a baby duramax in it dude.. if its anything like my duramax with 670,000 current KM's and still pulling 15k loads everyday up mountains the motor will LONG outlive the gasser, sorry diesel lasts longer. doesn't means its a better truck, just pointing that out.
Stephen H. You can’t me serious huh? I mean may be different where you at but from Texas, Louisiana, and to Arkansas I never see any maybe a couple old toecomers and camerys anything else is a Easter egg hunt seen the most when I stayed in Cali still barely any though so where all the little reliable toyodas at?
I know they reliable my aunt has a 94 Toyota Camry only thing ever done to is a couple body panels from a wreck and needed the erg and throttle body cleaned Cuase it wouldn’t stay running I just don’t see where there anymore reliable than anything else other than a dodge been around cars my hole life haven’t seen the superiority of the reliable toyodas.
Test drove all the midsize trucks with an open mind and walked away with a 2021 Tacoma TRD off rd DCSB 4x4 automatic, with tech & premium pkg Tacoma is just far superior in quality compared to the rest , from what I experienced, and I’m all about quality, this 21’ Tacoma will be my last truck I purchase I LOVE it ....
Oh is that why the 3rd gen Tacoma has been named the least reliable midsized truck by Consumer Reports the last two years? Or had two major recalls for engines that leave customers stranded or even causing the engine to stall, and rear differentials that leak oil, howl so loud you can hear it over the stereo, and can potentially fail and lock up. And who can forget that legendary Toyota rust rot, responsible for countless Tacomas that rot so bad they fold in half. Rot that landed Toyota in a major legal battle last year and cost them several billion dollars. That very same rust rotting frame underpins the 3rd gen Tacoma BTW.
Two things. One. Yall crack me up on the exhaust clips. I'm not going to buy a v6 truck for the exhaust note lol. Two. I say it all the time. Not going to buy a truck for the fuel mileage.
Daniel Salazar yes I agree with you. I love my Tacoma go head and believe me u will not regret it. There is one issue I find with Tacoma is the seat it’s not very comfortable.
Ahmad Al Ameer I was worried about that. Doing a trip in the wife’s 4Runner and damn my back hurts. At 73” the bottom of my shoulders sit at the top of the seats
I’m a ford guy, there gonna be my first truck and all but I got to say that Chevy is so nice. The Toyota would fit me more because it’s lighter and all it needs is a set of tires to be a beast. Great video
On what year Colorado? I had an 04 Colorado with the 3.5 that basically had the manifold fall off. I'm driving a 2018 Colorado with a 4 banger and manual, no issues so far. The new Colorado is so much better than the 04 and 06 I've owned. Next year I'm looking to trade for either the TRD Pro or ZR2. I'm back and forth between the two right now.
Another win for the Colorado. The ZR2 is built specifically for off-roading and it crushes the Tacoma's best off-roader. It won in towing too. The regular colorado also has versions that crush anything the Tacoma has to offer in MPGs and towing as well. All for way less of a cost and including way better reliability and more features. Tacoma is letting everyone down these days. Where you at guyproulx?
SO Basically the ZR2 Wins every test minus the MPG and the one toyota guy says you should still buy a toyota? Does your bank get a little better everytime you endorse a SubPar Product?
Not enough people use the multi terrain select, crawl control, or the atrac. It’s there for a reason. Yes toyota only has the rear lockers but the atrac is AMAZINGGGG. I’ve seen so many reviews and demos where no one even talks about or uses it. It truly is a great tool and gets me out of so many situations where I’m stuck. Also the crawl control should definitly be used when you get stuck and not just automatically assume the tacoma is stuck. It works in so many situations.
The best thing you can do if you have a ‘05 and up V6 Taco, FJ, 4Runner for cheap power gain... and I have done it to 2 Yotas. Is remove the secondary catalytic converters. Still passes emissions no problem and with Volante (I’m bias) or any other cold air intake aftermarket catback exhaust and Gibson headers they scream. I put down 263hp to the crank on 33’s with 4:88 on a truck with 106k. God I love Yotas
are you talking about the cali spec 4runners with the 4 catalytic converters? im fighting with that bullshit right now. I'm at a point where i'm going to remove them and install a URD simulator for my o2 sensors to maintain closed loop. I want more power out of it, can you link me which CAI, EXHAUST AND HEADERS PLEASE? thanks
I bought a new 2004 Chevy Silverado and put 16K miles on it in 4 years (it was not my primary vehicle). It was in the shop every 6 months. (Do the math and that's every 2,000 miles). The ignition relay crapped out at 7K miles and stranded me in the middle of nowhere on a Sunday afternoon with no cell service. Never bought a GM product after that.
When my Tundra was in the shop they gave me a Tacoma to drive for the weekend. If you are tall, you had better rent or borrow one to test it before buying.
Thats all fake news you hear abouy the tacoma by both consumer reports and JD Power beacuse they got caught taking pay offs by GM to say the Colorado is the best midsize truck
@@princessluna1233 Yep, GM is spending a ton to over market the truck. The diesels are probably the closest thing to a Gm I would ever buy. Shouldn't they be cheaper with all of that bailout business?
I don't do much offroading, and all of the modern trucks are wayyy to complicated for me! I love my Nissan Frontier Pro4x lol Its simple. 4x4,manual transmission, and a cd player! I'm perfectly happy!
You sir dont understand how money works. Why would you buy a depreciating asset that depreciates at a higher rate than the competition? Why would you into debt for any new car for that matter. Im sure you have a new car/truck and a butt load of debt. I drive a 10 year old truck I own. No debt, good income with investments and a healthy savings. Sorry having a new daily driver is your priority. Trying to impress someone at a stoplight you will never meet.
Not sure on the Colorado, but my 2007 Tacoma double cab with 135k got me $15k in 2015. I used that for a down payment on my Tundra. So I got 8 years out of it and got half my money back. Love Toyota’s.
As an owner of the Chevy Colorado with the Trailboss Package and the 2.8L diesel, I would like to see the diesel vs. the gas Chevy for long trips and off road. A lot of people ask me about the diesel for everyday driving. I love its abilities. But it appeals to different people for different reasons. Thanks for considering it.
Great video....I like the comparison between these two. Personally, if I were in the market, it would be the Taco. Just swap the street biased tires. That being said, the Colorado has a lot going for it as well, especially the front locking diff. I think Chevy should make the Colorado more visually appealing. The Taco, especially in gray (cement) and tan (quicksand) just look the part and stands out in the crowd. The Colorado just too plain for me. Maybe Nissan can finally update the Frontier. Let's not forget a new Ranger is coming....oh a Ranger Raptor as well. Mid-sized truck market is about to get interesting.
billy mc I got a 2017 tundra in quicksand. At first when Toyota came out with it, I was like I wouldn’t want it but it looks really good (that was in the TRD pro) then I was looking online at them and I saw a tss off-road Quicksand 4x2 with the sr5 upgrade package and I immediately fell in love with it. Don’t know what it was about it but Damn! But I wish I woulda waited for the cement just a lil longer.
Personally love Toyota's desert tan color. Such a bad ass color for a 4X4 The only thing that would be cooler is if it was in a satin rather than a gloss.
The disappointing part is that Toyota used to sell their TRD Pro trucks with excellent BFG KO2's. The price for the 2017 Tacoma TRD Pro was increased by $3-4k vs the previous Tacoma TRD Pro, but the choice of tires is cheap and doesn't make sense on a truck that's supposed to be the ultimate off-road version of the Tacoma.
ZR2 pretty much destroys the Taco, but things will get really interesting when the Ranger Raptor comes out
rocknroller1999 what kind of fan boy are you?ford , Chevy, or fiat? Own up!🍀
Andy Yang well said my brother! You got some Irish in you? But you do talk good , not me, I’m too much a irish prick🍀 I’ve had bad luck with Chevy trucks and ford mustangs!
Well said
Rob H biggest reason you bought the zr2 is cuz you’re probably gay dude
Afrobe Fcuk u Bryant id rather be gay than drive a toyota
Well said brother👏👏
If you truly want to go off road there is nothing like front and rear lockers. Period.
After 20k miles on my 19' OR Taco, i have NO REGRETS! i LOVE my little beast!
Im 12 and an expert in all subjects. The car i like most is best and thats is a fact.
theodore raz I should report you.
Joe T. I was jk im 15 but if you want to go ahead big daddy
theodore raz Ok I'm coming
Joe T. You mean "cumming"
I'm 13 and my experience trumps yours. Anything you say is subject to my approval
Huge Toyota and Chevy fan... both trucks look great but I’m leaning more towards the zr2
2001 Toyota SR5 Tacoma 2 wheel drive. 440,000 miles on it. Only issue we have had with it is as listed:
-Radiator was leaking
-Bad spark plugs
-Minor oil leak.
-Paint is coming off
-Radio went out
-New fuel pump
Everything else is stock on the truck.
I do not see any other truck lasting that long (still maintaining stock) besides the old ford diesels.
I love how every single comparative video I've watched talks about how the ZR2 has better tires. Just upgrade the tacos tires
Uh, sure. I think that the point is that at that price, the Yota should come with better.
That's how toyota gets to claim better fuel mileage. Aggressive tires dont have good rolling resistance
Krystof the better tired are an option and none of the reviewers ever seem to get a tester with them for some reason but both 2020 TRD pros I’ve looked at both had the upgraded tires-Goodyear wrangler duratracs
Adjusted Potato just bought a 2019 trd x series. Came with the duratrac wrangler tires
Ya but would still just have taco
Would be interesting to see if the TRD PRO and the TRD OFF ROAD,battle it out and see if it's Worth the Extra money hmmmm.......
Here in So Cal. The Pro in not worth the extra $ for offroading.
all you pay for is some interior, cosmetics and a different skidplate and better suspension!
Toyota
1 it’s not ugly
2 in 8 years it will still be running
3 holds its value better
Yeah, you aren't kidding on resale value.
Change 8 to 18. My taco is 18 and still takes me over lava fields and up to Mauna Kea.
In 28 years toyota will be still running
The weak points of my '95 ZR2 were:
1) Front end had to be changed every 50, 000 km (tie rods, ball joints, pitman arm, idler arm)
2) There were so many bangs and rattles in the interior that drove me nuts.
3) Was a little heavy and could of used more power
I hope they have fixed these short comings and if so I would love to get back into the mid-size market due to their mobility in the city and trail.
S 10 could not hold the colorado nuts
Tacomas are girl trucks... Men drive GMs.
Just traded my 13 year old Colorado with 200k miles in on a new Colorado. Only problems I ever had with drive train was carbon on the throttle body and a purge valve solenoid. Each person's experience is different and anecdotal evidence doesn't mean a damn thing.
Hypurr1 yet resell value says different.
they are kill mid size market. They are also the valued much higher in resale value. But your are correct, if Toyota offered a diesel it would be awesome.
370k miles on my 01 sierra. Original trans and motor. Still being used as daily driver.
We bought a used Duramax ZR2 back in Dec. So far loving the truck and averaging 25mpg.
We have a Chevy and a Toyota. While historically I'd take a Toyota, I think I'd choose the Colorado in this case. Front lockers are the bomb. And as I get older, getting in easily and then being comfortable are increasingly important!
I'll take the Chevy!.
Thanks for the great comparison.
tacoms , i love them. just a tad too small for me and just a tad too expensive lol. , personally. but man, they are nice..and they last forever
Nice Rush shirt, ❤
I was just talking to a guy who owns a Transmission Shop and asked him what he sees the most and the least. He sees Chevy's the most and Toyota's the least, enough said. When that warranty runs out I'd rather have the Toyota. Sad but true.
I really like the ZR2.
I’ve had my 3rd gen Tacoma for 2yrs in January and I don’t regret it one bit. I love this beast!

G.I. Jose Good choice. I don't even know how someone would even consider the Taco? It's outdated and does nothing better then the ZR2.
I'm commenting before I watch the video. Really like the ZR2 package when it came out in the 90s. I'm sure it's even better now
I’m glad for the Tacoma resale value.
In Thailand they both have turbo diesels. Toyota 2.7 4 cyl, and the Chevy a 2.8 4. No Gas engines avalable.
Ron Torrence Hilux diesel isn't a Tacoma
You cannot get a Tacoma in Thailand,, or a Hilux in The US.
And in the u.s we politicians the don't seem to understand the difference between fuel economy and emissions. I would rather have a diesel that gets twice the gas mileage pollutes a quarter more. Because increase fuel economy will pollute less because less fuel is being burned.
That were my wife’s family is from they get the best but they have no regulations in that
Maybe add a bigger turbo to the diesel for better performance without hurting emissions.
Been a fan of Toyota trucks ever since I watched Back To The Future part 1. And that's a really bad ass looking Toyota.
Same here. That custom Toyota sure was bad ass. I bought a black TRD Off Road back in August 2018. Love my truck! Was thinking of getting TRD Pro when I can afford it. I will keep it for at least 10 years or until it breaks. LoL
@@leonardrice1500 Nah they're unbreakable haven't you heard.
Guy in high school had that one, put a 350 in it. Had a custom sticker in the back window "the heartbeat of Japan" never forgot that. Lol. Truck was badass!!!
Damn Dude you brought me back! Lol same here✌
Truck was Awesome.
.."What was it George birdwatching?"...
Nice review guys. I bought a new Tacoma off-road 2 years ago (2018). I don't think I will be going for another one in 2022. I keep my daily drivers for ~4 years.
Tacoma has 2 things going against it:
1) lots of electrical issues with my truck.
I have a 5 speed, manual transmission, 4.3 liter, v6, Chevy s10. It's the best!
I even test-drove the Colorado before purchasing the Tacoma. what turned me off was looks and the interior still looks like it's from 1990 and honestly the reliability is just not there."
LOL did you even do any research before you bought your truck?
Great video! I don't have a need for a pickup truck but I were to buy I would go for the Tacoma TRD PRO It seems unbreakable!
Kevin Bowman chevy isn’t even close to toyota in terms of longevity and reliability making the Tacoma a much better investment.
they arent more reliable anymore, their QC has gone down hill so far since the 1st gen
Kevin Bowman 3:15 talks mpg
That USED to be true. Check these exact trucks again in 10 years and you'll be in for a shocker
Ivan Miranda he is talking about what the real mpg is not the epa set numbers. I didnt see the off-road mpg but for towing they got almost exactly the same colorado 5.2 and taco 5.1 mpg’s
I generally like GM products but I'd rather have that Tacoma. My dad owns a 1999 trd and still drives it with 340k miles!!
I own a 99 toyota tacoma sr5
And my dad has a 300k 5.3L Silverado with nothing but standard maintenance. Taco gets beat in every category all the fanboys...but but but resale value. Lol
My father has a 1990 chevy stepside with the 5.7 liter v/8 it has 350567 k miles that has both oem transmission and motor. Will a Toyota last 28 yrs like a Chevrolet.NOTTT
I have a 2000 zr2 s10....207,000 miles on it as of now...it's my only vehicle and no major issues yet. the fender is starting to rust out but the frame is still solid..
@@umadbrew you have a rare anomaly case. The fail rate of chevys are a lot higher than toyotas. That's factual. No need to get your panties in a bunch
Love that Chevy...interesting to see the Diesel test
In 10 years the taco will be worth 2-4 times as much as the Chevy
Bought a 2019 Trd 4x4 for Father’s Day and it sucks compared to my 1998 4 cylinder Tacoma, my 2019 is horrible on gas and response power currently trying to sell my 2019 Tacoma but my 1998 Tacoma is a beast it has 250,000 miles on it and it has way more power , they just don’t make em like they use too💯💯💯💯💯🙁
I have owned two Tacomas. You can't kill them..
You must live in the middle of a desert. One winter in the North and that legendary Toyota rust rot starts eating the frame and bed alive. Not to mention that weak reverse-cut high pinion rear diff might as well be made of glass. Oh and the 3rd gen Tacoma has been Consumer Report's "least reliable midsize truck" the last two years... can't kill them... uh huh...
That used to be true. Newer ones have issues.
Ik I crashed my tacoma twice and it's still here
I live up north with a 90s 4runner 17 years of winter and no rust take care of your shit
Ben Johnson only third gen
Great comparison! Here's my truck buying list if I ever get one: If I can get by with a midsize, Tacoma manual diesel. (These will soon be a thing, if the rumour mill is to be believed.) If it has to be a fullsize, Tundra or Kneesan, GM, Ford, and lastly Fiat.
I thank God everyday my Taco has the 4.0 V6 vs. the new gutless V6.
Chris Mc. What Tacoma do you have?
I'm still going with the Colorado diesel as i have a 31' Airstream I need to tow....with the ability to go offroad while I'm not towing
only an idiot would tow a 31' airstream with a midsize truck.
These guys have the best truck channel by far
Watching for a 2nd time before I trade in my 12' z71 5.3l v8 colorado on a 19 or 20 zr2 colorado.
Cool video. I have a blast watching these videos that you post. Thanks. It keeps me sane during the Corona thing. I am in my 60's and have had dozens of trucks in my life. These videos are OUTSTANDING!!
Chevy, just because it has the front locker and optional diesel. Good stuff!
Toyota... because it’s gonna last 400k miles the Chevy might go 150k
Obviously you haven’t owned a modern diesel.
@@Krojack no not the case especially now days
Been a TFL fan for a while, Is it me or is the Production value on this video higher than usual. Not sure what is different, but the quality of the video production seems above average. Keep up the great content.
Hey, ZR2! I build these!!
Michael Johnston great job I love zr2 I hope I can trade z71 1500 Silverado for it
ZR2 wins it for me. Front locker standard, MT tires standard, and available diesel.
Both are cool but sorry if I'm buying a mid size, the Yota gets my pay check all day! Toyota = Resale and reliability! IMOP Chevy as of late( the last 30 years) products are just garbage ! LS motors are the only exception.
M_ White008 i hope that O in IMOP doesnt stand for honest
ZR2 badged Chevy trucks have huge resale value since they were first made; do some research.
Toyota all the way, they’re dependable and reliable and will always outlast the competition.
Comparisons test that reflects reliability > ua-cam.com/video/MAkfiVkBP_Q/v-deo.htmlm47s
The new Tacoma's are not living up to the reliability of the old toyota trucks. Still probably not bad.
Daywalker_27 That's the most bullshit review I've ever seen. I've never had one of those vehicle's in my shop for any of those problems
waterloo123100 That's not my review, it's what actual owners are complaining about that are reported to a non bias agency
Daywalker_27 Id like to see where they got these reviews. The tocoma is basically the same as the last model. And I've never seen their so called transmission problems with Chrysler either. Thats a really vague and bad review.
Buy the Tacoma Off-road and you can add all the pro additions aftermarket for about 1/3 the price between the two. Love my 2019 Taco.
I’d get the Chevy just because I’ve had good experience with them and they never let me down.
Same here, I'd get the Chevy... in about 10 years. I never buy anything new.
I’d get the Tacoma for the very same reason
Agreed. 95 Silverado, 02 S10, 04 Sierra 2500 (gas). All great trucks
My dad has a 85 Chevy in mexico and it never fails
THE SQUAD 2 yeah I traded in my 03 suburban 3/4 ton which I bought new.... it had 190k miles on it and had originally brakes, spark plugs, exhaust and shocks. Great truck.
The Colorados transmission is notorious for eventual hard shifting. Had had a chance to test drive a 2020 model zr2, only had 7 mile on it when i had driven it, after a few blocks i felt a hard upshift in the trans, felt like the thing was broken.
it's called power yours shifts like a womans car i have a zr2 my nephew has a toy pro in real off roading i have to pull him out a lot lockers front and rear make a big difference and the power don't sound like a lot more but the difference is astounding in real life
Except the toyota will still be on the road running like a champ in 20 years
Not in the northeast they’re good for about 8-10 years before Rot sends them to the junkyard albeit still running well.
The engine will still be running but the frame and bed will have rust rotted away 10 years earlier LOL
They fixed the frames starting in 2016. Tacos wont rust anymore.
This isn't the 90s anymore. The new Colorado has been far superior in reliability in every measurable way so far compared to the new Tacoma.
Always Will cheaper than the new engine and transmission and electrical system that Tacoma will need within 4 years
What are you talking about there are plenty of used sips and canyons for sale
And how is the resale on those trucks?
At least around here the 1st generation canyons and Colorados are holding there value quite well keeping around the same price as full size trucks.
S10s on the other hand are just cheap but easy to work on so there a ok truck if your up for maintenance.
I'm a Chevy guy. But man that Tacoma is sick. I love that truck. Between the Colorado and Tacoma is take the Tacoma that thing looks awesome!!
Love the ZR2; much better looking than the Tacoma, but design is subjective. Both are nice trucks for less than a loaded full-size.
Fuel econ on the Diesel is awesome. They, GM, sand bagged the hell out of the mileage stats on the Diesel. 19/23. Hell I'm getting 23/29 with my ZR2 Diesel. After a 5,000 mile break-in the mileage seems to get better and better...
That Tacoma will still be running when that Chevy is scrapped.
My Jeep Cherokee Xj will Outlast your GAYOTA.....Way better and it's Free....hahahaha
nah that chevy has a baby duramax in it dude.. if its anything like my duramax with 670,000 current KM's and still pulling 15k loads everyday up mountains the motor will LONG outlive the gasser, sorry diesel lasts longer. doesn't means its a better truck, just pointing that out.
Stephen H. Why don’t I ever see 20 plus year old toyodas driving around then if that’s the case?🤔 genuinely confusing.
Everyone knows toyota builds the best small truck. Resale is like a Harley Davidson... you might even get more then you paid for it if buying used.
Yes that’s hard to say about any vehicle, used ones sell for the price of new ones sometimes.
That very same rust rotting frame underpins the 3rd gen Tacoma BTW.
hochhaul
hochhaul
1st gen tacomas can still sell for 8-10k with 150k miles. No other pickup of that era comes even close to that
Two things. One. Yall crack me up on the exhaust clips. I'm not going to buy a v6 truck for the exhaust note lol. Two. I say it all the time. Not going to buy a truck for the fuel mileage.
I plan on getting the Toyota, but the ZR2 is pretty awesome too.
Daniel Salazar I just bought one last week I love it so so much I wanted to go with ZR2 but I was afraid about the maintenance
Ahmad Al Ameer I went to look at a ZR2 and I couldn't even reach over the bed, it was pretty high. I like them, but I'm I trust the Toyota more
Daniel Salazar yes I agree with you.
Daniel Salazar if Ford ever decides to bring out the Ranger Raptor. Delaying it hype it up.
I’m a ford guy, there gonna be my first truck and all but I got to say that Chevy is so nice. The Toyota would fit me more because it’s lighter and all it needs is a set of tires to be a beast. Great video
The Toyota won't set itself afire in two years or lose its exhaust manifold. I've had both on a Colorado.
Ya right tell me all about your ZR2 in 300k miles when my Tacoma is still running like brand new
Dale Couture Reliability and GM should never be in a sentence together.😂😂
God I love Yotas
grandprismatic the most reliable midsize for sure.
are you talking about the cali spec 4runners with the 4 catalytic converters? im fighting with that bullshit right now.
Check the resale value after 5 years and you get the answer. Sorry GM
TX
Spot on ! GM = total garbage
When my Tundra was in the shop they gave me a Tacoma to drive for the weekend. If you are tall, you had better rent or borrow one to test it before buying.
Can't go with a taco now, because it's getting reports of it not being as reliable. :( ZR2 it is!
I like the looks of the Yota more, but I'd probably buy the Chevy if I was in the market for one of these. I'll stick with my 3/4 ton for now tho lol
bought my son a new 19 Tacoma and it has been plagued with electrical problems
I own a 2017 for 1 year no problems at all
@@gokusuky253 yeah my daughters is fairly reliable but my sons TRD is built on Friday POS
Try to trade it fro the 2020
I don't do much offroading, and all of the modern trucks are wayyy to complicated for me! I love my Nissan Frontier Pro4x lol Its simple. 4x4,manual transmission, and a cd player! I'm perfectly happy!
What's a 2007 colarado sell for today vs what a 2007 Tacoma sells for? Lol nuff said
Nicholas S if you buy a daily driver car for resale value you have no idea how money works and don't deserve any.
Generic name.. you some sort of stupid or something?
Nicholas S 👏
Not sure on the Colorado, but my 2007 Tacoma double cab with 135k got me $15k in 2015. I used that for a down payment on my Tundra. So I got 8 years out of it and got half my money back. Love Toyota’s.
Hi there hay naythen on the Toyota are you running the e locker in conjunction with the Terrain select like the rock Dirt mode?
Maybe actually use the crawl control on the Taco when you lose traction. 🤦🏼♂️
The new color DeepWood Green looks amazing on the Colorados.
In the drag did u have ect power on or off in the Tacoma? Because there is a huge difference between ect power on vs off
