I bought my Tacoma new in 2008 for a work truck. Now it has 233k miles, and still runs and drives just as good as it did 11 years ago. I’d love to get a new truck but I just can’t justify it since mine is still good to go. I’ll probably take it over 300k miles.

there are several videos on youtube of people getting well over 1 million miles on gen 2 tacomas. you could probably get another million miles if you keep it.

Sold it. Got an 07 tundra with 117k. 122k now, love it except the gas mileage.
My 2015 Ram only made it to 150,000 and died on me. I wanted a Toyota Tundra so bad, but there is nothing on the lots right now nothing. I don’t know how but I ended up with the 2021 Gladiator Rubicon. I don’t plan on keeping it, 3 years and I am trading it in for a Toyota. I need a 300,000 mile truck.
Jeep needs to stop focusing on conquering rocks and mud, and needs to make some efforts at conquering 50,000 miles with no major repairs....

@@silverxtaco Outliers always exist. It is unwise to make statements of "fact" based off of one, or few, examples. When you look at Jeep reliability vs Toyota reliability, as a whole, Jeep cannot even begin to compare. And when I say Jeep, I really mean Chrysler. Most FCA products perform poorly in the reliability department. Sadly, this is true of most American vehicles these days.
The prices for these “midsize” trucks are hilarious.
You can get full size truck with pretty much the same fuel economy for the same price.

I bought a 2018 Silverado LT last year for $45k CAD ($50k out the door). They never discount midsize trucks either to the extent of full size.
I can buy a 2018 Colorado for 18k US... the Zr2 is an offroad monster. THE DSSV shocks alone are 7k if you buy them from Chevy. Front and Rear Lockers are 2-5k installed. All the stuff that comes with Bison package (you can buy it all individually from AEV) it's cheaper to buy the car(bison) than the parts to upgrade the zr2. The Wrangler or Gladiator is just expensive and is hardly a truck...its a wrangler with a bed. The only rip off is the TRD pro because you can buy a Tacoma Offroad 4x4 and upgrade the suspension for $500.
Yea that's all good. But you get no warranty with all that. So you break something and you take it to the dealer. Your claim will get denied because you modified it.

I got a 2019 Ram 2500 6.4 L Laramie listed for $61,000 got it for mid $55,000 and it will run circles around these trucks. Tows 14,000 payload 3,000 long bed crew cab leather - sun roof - HK stereo $4k option - power seats - front and back headed heats - UConnect - auto everting - power front seats. Love this thing.
And it’ll be in a junkyard worth nothing in 3 years. Awesome job at wasting $55,000 to satisfy your small penis complex.
You’re comparing a full sized half ton Chrysler to midsize mostly gasser group that won’t lose resale like your glorified Fiat.
Great but you missed the point that these are mid-size trucks. Also i guarantee you that I have taken my ZR2 to places you would never get that pig of a truck. All while spending almost 20k less. Oh and you can keep your sun-roof.
There is no good way to have a great off roader and a great on road truck there are too many compromises. I will stick with my Ram 2500 diesel and SXS Now I can travel comfortably while towing the best off road vehicle out there. And bonus no tent camping the SXS goes in the toy hauler. You guys can keep your little boy pick ups that cost more than my diesel pick up.

My 2020 Tacoma has Kevlar off road tires. Mine is just the TRD off road, not the pro and and still has good off road tires stock.

Great review. I was looking at both the Colorado and Tacoma when I was shopping. I ended up getting the TRD Off Road because it offered a 6 speed manual. But all 3 are fantastic trucks.
Compared to the two Tacomas I previously owned, my 2018 TRD Off-Road was a major disappointment. In town or on the dirt, it was fine. At freeway speeds especially climbing, it was constantly hunting gears and struggled to keep the speed up. Plus it guzzled gas. The 3rd gen Tacoma engine/tranny combination sucked. I traded it for a 2020 diesel Bison. The Bison has power to spare and 40%+ better fuel economy.
Once you tune it for 200 bucks hunting gears is gone
No midsize truck looks as good as the Tacoma trd Pro. After all these years I would still take the Tacoma any day over any other midsize truck. I just love this truck so much.

I'll take the Colorado. Lockers and would take the diesel version. The regular ZR2 doesn't have a price tag like the gladiator either. I wait for the day Toyota brings the 2.8 GD6 found in the Hilux

I’d like to see a real world MPG test. Hard to believe the square shaped Jeep with the biggest tires by far gets better MPG’s then the Colorado. I don’t trust what the manufacturers claim.
idk man i was pretty surprised when the numbers on my JK rubi were exactly what they rating was, id believe its a little better with the 8spd and new body.
The MPG reported is from the Manufacture, real world with my 17 ZR2 V6 is 15/23 after a gear swap to 4.10's
@C Pr My trip computer says I get 19-20 mixed driving in my JKU 6 speed stick. When I measure at the pump it's more like 20-21. But when you have all 3 at your disposal for a day, why not report the actual miles and gallons consumed. It looks like they did a bit of idling during his presentation, not unlike people waiting to get up a trail or stuck in traffic. The numbers can be quite revealing when you let a vehicle idle for extended periods.
I'm running 16 or so mixed driving mpg on my H3T equipped with the 5.3 V8 and some aftermarket 35 inch M/T tires despite the average fuel economy being rated at 13 combined. I am running a banks programmer but I keep it on the 87 octane performance setting.
So I also kinda find it hard to believe the jeep is getting better mpg vs the ZR2.
I've been getting 20-23 highway in my gasser zr2. When I had the diesel zr2 I was getting 28mpg highway

Mate get a real heavy duty 4x4! The Landcruser V8 turbo diesel 79 series eats yank 4x4 utes. In Australia you would never go from Sydney to the Kimberly ranges to Darwin and then to Cairns and back to Sydney. A Jeep would never make it! Look up UA-cam! Bloke made a rap song .... "I made a mistake ...I bought a jeep!" Chrysler/Jeep Australia went nuts over it! Not good for the Brand....they tried to ban it!

U can buy the cruiser 79 series in the USA. I wasted $ 50k on Chevy Silverado the biggest piece of shit I've ever driven towing a SS Torana hatchback from Queensland to Sydney .I had 4 break downs at 60.000ks mechanical write off 4 big cracks in the chasey .and towed buy a 35 yr old landcruser .The SS Torana hatchback got me my landcruser v8 turbo diesel I have lost trust in American trucks the landcruser 79 series v8 turbo diesel is 100% upmanship engineering reliability over U.S. Mexican cheap labor pick ups your trucks are rubbish lemons.
You don’t need every option that rubi has. Drop a few options and that rubi with lockers and sway bar disconnects can be had at the same price as the other trucks.

Great Review. Great job pointing out the door jam sticker over the advertised hauling capacity of the truck. It is amazing how much all of those creature comforts on a truck add to weight and in decreasing the cargo capacity of the vehicle.
Need to include weight when talking about power... makes a difference. That gladiator is only 500lbs lighter than my tundra.

One of the biggest offroad considerations wasn't even mentioned. One does not have a front locker.
That's an easy fix. Just buy a foot locker and weld it to the front bumper. Problem solved, problem staying solved!

A Taco with a 6-speed manual is the way to go
I get tired of stop and go clutch ins only to immediately feather the clutch to get going again in traffic. I have motorcycles from rockets to cruisers. Sometimes it’s nice not have to babysit gears. Also on the trails it’s way more smooth to crawl with an auto.

What are you talking about? All my jeeps have made it past 150k with no issues and the car with highest resale value is in fact a Jeep (wrangler)

There is nothing in this video that couldn't be found on any specifications/data website out there (including the manufacturer websites). I was hoping for maybe a snowy hill climb test and stopping distance test...or at least a comparison of the cargo space and how you would fit a weekend's worth of gear in the back. I have friends who drive all three, and I was about to share it with them so they could fight over the results...but there isn't much content here. Cool video of them splashing in the mud, that's all.
ZR2 all the way. That thing is a freaking goat when it comes to climbing in 4 low with the front locker on.

I got my 18' Z71 new (about 34k miles ago) for $32,500 after rebates.
It still has a rear locker... I will be putting the Eaton E-Locker from the ZR2 into the front soon myself for around $800 worth of parts.
Same tires as the TRD Pro.
47:1 crawl ratio vs 36:1 on the Taco.
Fuel economy rating is 18/24.
I took the air dam off and installed OEM Zr2 style skids for $330.
I bought some used ZR2 sliders for $300 and they bolted right up.
At just over $33,000 I am now sitting decent. I may throw on one of the many aftermarket bumpers at some point... Possible the AEV bumper since they are now available. As well as some of the boron steel skids from AEV.
Thank god you guys have this guy doing off-road reviews. Tfl of old was honestly kinda cringe as far as off-road content overall.
I know it is safe to hit like as soon as I see it's a Stephen video. The man never disappoints and should be a product tester that is paid by the manufacturers to test for weak points in designs.

I would love to see your opinion about these truck's performance on road, especially on the snow.
Someone mentioned the absence of weight in the numbers. I agree that adding weigh and the power-to-weight ratio for both curb weight and GVWR, assuming maximum payload, would add clarity to the power question. Good, fact based review.
With the payload ratings on all three, you won’t be towing more than 5k lbs. with two people and a small amount of gear.

@Pantos Soup the Tacoma definitely has a face only a mother could love. I remember when the Pontiac Aztec came out tons of people loved the way they looked as well. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I absolutely love Toyota quality and I think the olders Taco's were cool looking but damn.
Bronco Billy are you high? the tacomas way better looking than any of the other trucks in this segment except maybe the jeep. The chevy, ford, and nissan all look like a moms suv with a bed on it.

Ryan Bevilacqua you have obviously never owned a modern Toyota. I’ve owned all three brands. The Jeep and Chevy aren’t even close in build quality, reliability and resale. The Tacoma is also the cheapest. You will lose so much buying the others in resale and repairs.
Great video and good tip for truck buyers to look in the door jam, for me though while it’s not prettiest and while not as reliable as the Taco, these are off-road trucks and the Gladiator gives you the best blend of off-road and towing.

crj moto same here, my 2003 dodge Dakota has been paid off for 10 years now. Whatever breaks on I fix it and keep on trucking. There is no way in hell that I will spend 50k on a new truck. To be honest my next truck will be , and I don’t care what anyone says about it , 2009 2010 Honda Ridgeline.

Jeep is the clear winner here. It is the most expensive but you get what you pay for. Best OFF- ROADER , best payload, best towing, best axle / crawl ratios. Disconnectable sway bars for best articulation also straight axles front and rear.
It's been said over and over..... You need all them HPs & gears to get yourself to remote and tough places...........
Then you need the Tacoma to come get you and bring you home. 😉
No, not spending $50-60k for a compact. If I had major projects that needed the capability off road it would still be cheaper to build a base model up.
Get the Jeep Gladiator Sport S with max tow package, comes with wide Dana 44 and 4.10 gears and build it to liking.

Not sure why you don’t have the Ford in this comparison. We purchased a 2019 Ranger XLT with the FX4 and towing packages (lightning blue) for just over $40,000 Canadian. We have put 7000 kms on it and love the truck. We test drove all these trucks but went with the ranger because it had better numbers (towing, payload and price) and was the most comfortable. I am 6’3’ and could hardly get into the Toyota.

Jeep has better ground clearance than all of them but the wheelbase is so damn long. Oh well nothing a lift can't fix

In Australia we had a 11 Midsize Pickups in a Shoot out They were all diesel, too bad you do not get them in the US. Colorado is not rhat good, Tacoma and Gladiator do not exist

3 years on my 17 Trd offroad and only regular service maintenance so far,,seriously not a single issue ,except factory tires are junk 60000kms and had to replace

The Taco duh. Thats what its known for. I just bought my 2001 Tacoma 4x4 Double Cab limited trim 150k miles. For 9k thats because it was my uncles from day 1. But if u google it they go for 15k

Would like to see a towing review, same trailer and weight for all of these, say 5k lbs. I say use same weight rather than each truck’s max so that we can compare how well each tows a standard load. The Gladiator struggled in my opinion with 7k on the Ike, but would it shine vs a Colorado with 5k?

Great video. Maybe not enough time but unless the Tacoma has changed, only the Rubicon and the ZR2 have front and rear lockers. Does the Tacoma still have drum brakes? I bought a 2020 ZR2 Bison Diesel. Driving to and from work, I'm averaging about 21 MPG. None of these are cheap vehicles. I was leaning toward the Gladiator but wanted the diesel and didn't care to wait. Doesn't really matter which one you get all three are pretty capable trucks.
Now which one is the most reliable and retail the best resale value...

Based solely on what I see, I think the Bison is better suited for rock crawling and water fording. I think the regular ZR2 is probably better in every other off road aspect.
The advantage of buying it that way from the dealer is that if you get in an accident, insurance will cover all the mods

Excellent review!.. I daily drive my 4Runner TRD Off Road but dying for a midsize pickup with a diesel, so interested in the Chevy Colorado ZR2.. I think how long the Gladiator is throws me off it being my choice.. Toyota needs a diesel offering.. Their lack of diesel will soon start to hurt them here in the North American market.. Imagine a diesel for the 4Runner or Tacoma.. That would be perfect in my world.. I hope next gen Toyota Tacoma and 4Runner have diesel offering
I bought a 2009 Tacoma TRD OR 4x4 Double Cab with 175k miles on it. It had a full maintenance history, clean carfax and a brand new frame. I paid $12,500. A little maintenance and I should be able to get at least 200,000 more miles out of it. My truck is about 95% as capable as any of these 3 trucks are. Plus I wont cry if I scratch it while off-roading. Sure beats paying $60k!

@I know you are right, And I just got owned but: I have a 2017 Tacoma with 60k miles. It has never been garage kept, been in 4 accidents (Not my fault. I'm unlucky), has trail damage from 2 years of hitting offroad trails in Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and Texas every weekend, done some mild towing (4.5k-ish lbs for 1000+ miles a couple times and 1.5k ish lbs on occasion) , and received a lift and bigger tires 10k miles ago. The only issue I've had was the AC blower motor recall. Toyota handled it asked and even put me in a rental for a couple days so I didn't have to deal with Texas heat and no AC.

Good videos. I have a suggestion, when you're talking about the approach and departure angles maybe you can show a little image of the angles for side by side comparisons. You know what I mean, just lines at the angles for approach and departures, lines like / but at the actual degrees.
The Jeep is great . it offers things the other two cant really . Solid axles ,the ability to throw on some 35's on stock , but for me 65k is just too much to spend on a vehicle knowing that youre probably going to do another 5k in upgrades ..
The Toyota is the king of reliability . It can handle pretty much anything you throw its way . It has the best resale value , a very strong aftermarket parts presence , but at the end of the day its not as off road worthy compared to the other two with the lack of the front locker . Also I heard the seating position and interior is a little uncomfortable , but I saw with the 2020's they added power adjustable seats so...
Lastly you have the ZR2. This is probably the truck I would choose currently . The price is the cheapest out of all three( Ive seen as low as 34k new for leftover models). It has the best comfort for a DD , an optional diesel version , skid plates , award winning suspension , front and rear lockers , and from what Ive seen it can give a stock gladiator a run for its money off road due to the break over and departure angles .
Its a tough choice , but I think all three are great trucks and you cant go wrong picking one . If youre looking for the forever truck the Toyota is probably the best choice . If youre looking for the best truck to mod , the Jeep is probably the way to go there . If youre looking for an all around off road capable solid DD you can drive for 5-10 years before you trade it in and get the next best thing , the Colorado is my choice , especially given the price (35k).
For me it would be the Taco...Reliability trumps all in my book.
The numbers are so close in almost every categories that it’s just not a real difference. Maybe towing? Maybe clearance numbers? Best to pick on taste/style.
