Edward Nigma grew up an overly curious child, annoying his parents and others with his unending stream of queries. Eventually, he decided to become the person with all of the answers, even if that meant forming the questions himself. Infatuated with puzzles, Edward eventually lost interest in ordinary jobs, and took on a life of crime. This question mark wearing persona was not only developed to steal riches, but to prove his superiority over Batman, Gotham’s greatest detective. Join www.WatchMojo.com as we will explore the comic book origins of Edward Nigma, otherwise known as The Riddler.
I think Riddler would have been perfect in the Nolanverse
Am I crazy or did the Dark Knight Rises (I want to say the Dark Knight) end with the Bat signal being changed to a question mark? I swear I saw it.
Ed Duke No. It was shaped like a bat, but looked a little like the Nightwing symbol.
I think the Riddler will probably be the first villain in the Batman reboot.
he was actually, he was going to be played by David Tennant, but then Heath Ledger died while they were making the movie and they had settle with Dark Knight Rises
Matthew Bowman David Tennant as The Riddler? Now there's again one role, we didn't see ever...
I like the way the Gotham series have done The Riddler
They did him well, really good. I cant wait till he snaps.
Edward Nygma You should see The Riddler in my film.
I like him as a good guy so far, kinda sad to watch him tip over the edge. Its going to be awesome though. My bet is at the end of this season or start of the next season
_ julian _ Oh yeah?
Yeah. gotta say, either way, I love the way they're developing him.
I like how Gotham has been dealing with the Riddler.
Yeh I agree that of the villians they are setting up they are nailing Riddler perfectly.
yeah i agree gotham nygma is great!
It's good ... But doesn't play on the narcissist side I would love to see
Yeah his cool in that show bout nibody likes hem he like ms.kringle

I liked the Riddler in both of the Batman: Arkham games. He was a pessimistic jerk, but was fun to challenge him while solving his riddles.
Jesse Eisenberg should've played the riddler instead of Lex Luthor
+MG3 I agree with this 100 percent.
I've discussed this with my friend so many times! He'd be perfect for him with his nerdiness but cleverness
Agreed

The best Riddler is the green suit and hat and not that tight ass question mark suit
Trei Taylor I think the Green Suit look and The Batman look were his best looks
Trei Taylor yeah like the one in "Gotham"
The suit is so tight in the last clip that I can literally see his penis. Jesus.

True
I like gotham's riddler origin, hop he'll be more of a narcissist on later seasons tho
Eric Adrien I think he is now
@@prettyboygrizzly1184 how so?
Would it be too much to ask, that at least once in my lifetime, I would see a serious Batman film, where The Riddler would be the main villain - but not like Jim Carey's overacted Riddler - but menacing and dangerous maniac who is driven to test others by leaving clues and riddles to his crimes. Who is dedicated to creating a riddle the Dark Knight won't be able to solve in time - even if he has to kill someone to do it! That's the Riddler I remember from Arkham games!
I concur.
One thing they need to do to make Riddler taken seriously, is ditch the green spandex and give him the suit, tie, and bolder hat.
Sounds like Jigsaw from the Saw movies
OneFromEasternFinland that would be kinda boring tbh
OneFromEasternFinland Gotham season 3 is the way to go then, that Riddler is basically the Arkham riddler.
Telltale Batman is the closest you're getting as of now
He's still my favorite Batman villain

Yep, always been my favorite villain.

Second best after the Joker
The Riddler is my favorite Batman villain!!

Hoo boy wait til you play Arkham Knight

Isn't everyone who came here
wow i just realized thst tv show gotham has differant origin to every character
+sergio ramos Gotham isn't in the same universe, they confirmed it. It's the same batman characters adn Villains but it's all different
The Riddler is another darker reflection of Batman: Both are intelligent geniuses, but Riddler leaves clues whilst Batman solves them. He is what Batman could have become if he let his genius go all over his head.

Joygasm!!!!

i know people hate that movie, but jim carry never not got a laugh when he was having fun
Riddle me this:
When he passes by you lose your hair.
Well when you're in France even your head.
He's the only one that certainly will drop you dead.
His name ain't Tedd.
He watches you and moves with every breath you make.
He passes by and watches you to blow a cake.
Whether you solve this or not I wouldn't give a dime.
The answer to this riddle of course is.........
The Riddler I don't know? What's the answer?
Oh I think you do kind sir.
It would only be fair.
As he passes by he grabs your neck.
More destructive than a horde of Dalek.
The Riddler Time?
Time it is,my kind friend. And this one riddle comes to the end.Look for me more you should. I know in your shoes I certainly would.
The Riddler Time! Of course! That is AWESOME!!!
The problem with many portrayals of the Riddler is that the writers aren't as smart as they want the character to be. They can't layout a puzzle and think riddles are the things gradeschool children tell as jokes. If the Riddler is to be written well, his plans would span years of comic book issues, left unsolved and not connected with him easily because the have multiple wrong possibilities as they are only pieces to solve... like putting a puzzle together. The solution should be so well written that once you read it, you get it, but only in 20/20 and not with the need for inside knowledge like "Mcguffin Square is holding the Hitchcock dance in the Spade building of Maltese and Falcon, so it must be the answer is Bob the janitor (who nobody mentioned until now)".
Now for my riddle: "In marble walls as white as milk, within a lining as soft as silk, sitting in a fountain crystal clear a golden apple doth appear. No doors there are to this stronghold, yet thieves break in and steal the gold."
I think the answer is heart .
+Benjamin Abruzzo
Is the answer an egg? Sounds similar to the riddle told in the Tolkien book, 'The Hobbit'.
***** Yes, Nell, it is an egg.
+Benjamin Abruzzo I kinda thought it was a pearl inside of an oyster. Good job with the "multiple possibilities"! :)
Connor Stickels That's the trick with a good riddle. It has to be generic so that anybody can guess, vague enough so that it can have multiple answers, but be specific in one way that it rules out all but one possibility. If it weren't for the Hobbit and Tolkien having used a version of this, I'd say people would be guessing more.
And this is why the Riddler, if written well, is the most difficult villain to fight... but he's not often written as well because riddles are much more complex than jokes.
Actually the Riddler is crazy.
The definition of insanity is repeating the same process and expecting different results.
Even though the riddler is one of batman's more sane foes if you look at the Joker or Victor Zsasz
+Angel Del Prado I would day Penguin is pretty much his most sane foe as he's more or less just a typical mob guy
You're contradicting yourself. That is exactly why he is insane.
Over the years, Nigma has done nothing but attempt to make the perfect crime. Once he's stopped, he'll just make another game. He's insane because he believe one of the traps would actually be elaborate enough to outwit the Bat-Man.
That's one definition of insanity, but not the definition used to determine mental health. But yes, the Riddler is insane, & is a regular inmate of the Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane.
you been playing Farcry?
Arkham series, Riddler is my favorite.
Yeh I agree he is amazing. I don't know if you have seen the new Gotham show but they have been setting the Riddler up very closely to Arkham Riddler. it's fsntastic.

I like the backstory in "The Batman" the animated series. Similar childhood...but...he was a scientist, and became betrayed by the person he loved the most, and all he wants is revenge on the person he thought did it..but became heartbroken knowing the person he loved sabatoged his invention.
Is it safe to say that most of us are more find of the riddler thanks to the Arkham games?
Yup
I would've figured Batman: The Animated Series.
I like gothams version
+no one yea its really interesting
+no one Agreed. The actor that plays Nygma in Gotham is truly amazing, just like the one playing Penguin
yep
This.
Yasssss
I think one of the main reasons I enjoy the Batman stories and universe so much is because of the villians like Riddler. Without great villians, the heroes don't get to really show how great they are.
Neil Patrick Harris as the next Riddler.... It just works.
I always thought NPH would be a good Flash too.
Roger Harris I always thought Johnny Depp would play the Riddler
Great performance by Jim Carrey, also the make up on Two Face (Tommy Lee Jones) over the top
Edward Nigma = E.Nigma = Mr. E
Whoever created this character (yes, I could Google it) was a genius when he named him.
Chronk yep, a lot of Batman villains have names that go with their persona's, Selina Kyle, Selina rhymes with Feline (sorta) aka Catwoman, Pamela Isley aka Poison Ivy, not only does Isley sound like Ivy, but her initials stay the same, P.I. not to mention her middle name Lillian comes from Lily which is a type of flower. Another I like, and not many realize is 1960's Robin, Burt Ward... kind of a trick name there as well because Robin aka Dick Grayson is known as Bruce Wayne's ward... I am sure there are many more, but yes, Riddler's has got to be one of the best.
WykkedWaze Dont forget Harleen Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn :D
GHIIIGNT D'oh! How could I of forgotten The Queen? She's in my pic... lol. I have failed as a Comic Book Lover.
lol dude its all good. We forgive you.
lol, thanks, I think I actually intentionally forgot her because I was mentioning villains, and Harley is more of a sidekick/henchwoman/antihero, depending on the story and her mood.
Has potential to be an amazing villain in a live action film
Is anyone watching this after The Batman Trailer.
He was a second main villain throughout the entire Arkham series.
I think they should make Freakazoid a movie and have Jim Carrey play him.
***** Really? I don't think Jim could handle the insanity...
ADAM SANDLAR on the other hand
Or maybe both of them and have one of them be Daxter....
GENIUS :D in fact, have the two randomly switch spots literally throughout the film.
=-= what....it could work with all the fourth wall gags they do on that show...
Naruto200Man Jim can play a good insane guy.
I'm sorry, but you can't expect Jim Carrey to be anything BUT over the top
And this is why I am the best villain in the Batman series.
The writers and artists on Batman in the early days were incredible especially the creator Bob Kane...they created timeless and unique characters!
Update for 2022. The Batman has a more sinister Riddler that has embraced The Zodiac Killer approach. Portrayed by Paul Dano.
I really like the idea of Riddler reformed and on Batmans side.Hell,he isn't that much of an intimidating foe even in matching wits with Bruce but would make a solid back up adviser for Bats.Think he works better that way.
Did not care for Jim's version of The Riddler...
Me neither. And don't forget that he was also played by John Ashton(the original Gomez Adams).
I just don't care for Jim Carey. His comedy and acting are all over the top. Kids might like him, but it's easy to outgrow him.
What about Robin Williams as Edward Nygma/Riddler in Tim Burton's Batman's Old Universe
Paul Deno's Riddler in The Batman (2022) is creepy & violent but engaging & a true achievement to Paul Deno but also a testament to the Riddler from the comics!
Who's here after casting of Paul Dano?? 🙋
The Riddler has to be one of my all-time favorite Batman villains, next to Catwoman and the Penguin

Edward Nigma... E. Nigma...enigma... Enigma means a person that is mysterious or puzzling. Did anyone else notice that?
years ago
ok
Nope... Now I get the pun!
Acinonyx Jubatus It’s always been like that. That’s the point
He was bitten by a question mark
If I was Nolan, If I had wrote the script to the third and final installment to The Dark Knight trilogy, first off I would've chose a different title such as "Gotham City" or "The Caped Crusader" and second, I would chosen The Riddler, The Penguin, Harley Quinn, and the surprise/plot twist villain being Poison Ivy. The Riddler would be a criminal mastermind with a near Genius-level IQ who becomes the most intellectually and psychologically challenging enemy yet who joins forces with The Penguin, a disfigured, greatly-feared, and highly-intelligent crime-boss who wants to seize full control of Gotham's criminal underworld and was once trained by Ra's Al Ghul at some point in his life but had betrayed Al Ghul and disappeared with Al Ghul being unable to find him. The Riddler and Penguin's alliance is threaten when not only does Batman re-emerge after nearly a decade but when a face-painted female psychopath also comes to Gotham to continue The Joker's mission into unleashing utter chaos and destruction in Gotham and wants to wipe out all the other crime families of the city so she can rule of Gotham as "The Clown Princess of Crime". The Penguin manages to manipulate Harley into joining his organization but The Riddler has plans to betray and kill Penguin later down the road but towards the climax, Riddler's plan backfires and is outsmarted by both Penguin and Batman which leads to his demise. It turns out that Penguin suspected and was well aware of Riddler's plan to betray him and was tracking down his every move! He even had men in his (Riddler's) organization the whole time! What do you think about that as an alternative third-parter to Nolan's TDK trilogy? Any opinions? Open 4 Feedback!
"Spider-Man 3 syndrome" Good thing your'e not Nolan.
I hope you see this as constructive criticism! Too many "main" characters to keep up with, tie together, pit against each other, etc. I wonder how/why Oswald would get in with the League of Shadows - and how he could avoid being found but not Bruce - and how he could outsmart Edward, and for so long, and reaching so far, and without Edward knowing. (In short, The Riddler loses all dramatic power when he's not the smartest villain.) Harlene wants chaos and anarchy, but also wants to be head of organizations? I'm sorry, but this *could* work in a campy universe - just not the realistic Nolanverse. Also, adding Pamela as yet another twist? :whew:
EDIT: Ah, I didn't see the four-year timespan between our comments. Anyway! Cheers. $:^ J

alltho to be fair i do suppose it was mostly the director's fault.
I think a different origin explains The Riddler's actions more clearly. You see, his father was abusive and beat Edward if he ever told a lie. This compelled him to instinctively tell the truth. Therefore, riddles have a single correct answer which he's attracted to.

A Riddler Game Show Would Be Killer
This is my first discovery of mojos villain/hero origins videos....... Let the marathon & lack of sleep begin.
I'm surprised that he doesn't get any attention in films. A riddler film would be great.
I don't get why The Riddler keeps trying to prove that he's smarter. While Batman is out picking up his litter and solving his puzzles, The Riddler is sitting at home drinking coffee. I think it's pretty self evident who's smarter.
He's one of my favorite batman villains together with the joker.
I think jim carrey would have been better as joker not riddler. Riddler is just a cry baby who believe himself as superior while denying the fact that he always cheats to win.
One of my my favourite batman villian
The Riddler from Batman TAS was the best version of Riddler. He was witty, confident, and cunning. It was his perfect role. He also had a great design in that as well. He would be an amazing movie villain if he was done right.
No kidding! Loved Riddler there! One of his finest moments ever.
What about the fact that The Riddler worked for the GCPD alongside Gordon and Harvey Bullock and that allowed him to gain a lot of knowledge about crime-fighting and how the police works. This was shown in Batman: Arkham Origins, Batman: Arkham City, the Gotham TV Show, plenty of comic books, and I think the movie Batman Forever (I watched the movie years ago so I dont remember if Riddler's origin story was ever mentioned).
The Adam west Riddler: Comical
Batman Forever Riddler: fucking over the edge
Gotham Riddler: the best one yet
To the Riddler, that is hardly a surprise. He always knew he was better than the disliker.

I love the way he was portrayed in the Batman:Arkham games, he's like the Saw of the Batman universe...
