The animated series origin was the best one. Hagan became addicted to a face changing product because he was disfigured in a car accident. Trying to steal some more, some goons decided to have some fun and drown him in it, and that's how he became Clayface.
I also like that origin the best. Makes the character more sad, since he didn't mean to become clayface and only commits crime to make money in his quest to become normal again.
Well in Arkham City when Ra's al Ghul used the Lazarus Pit lightning hit Wonder Tower like a lighting rod for it to work, with Clayface that didm't happen, but I don't know.
+usmh How long has the game been out again? Because for anything older than a couple years the "spoilers" thing doesn't really apply. I can appreciate the effort, but that's like saying you can't tell someone what the twist ending to "Citizen Kane" is just because they haven't seen it yet.
Joshua Morrison Yes. Don't do that. How dumb to assume everyone has seen every classic film. People don't spend their every living moment keeping up with pieces of fiction.
usmh Missing the point. The point was there is a certain point beyond which saying "spoilers! " isn't an attempt to prevent ruining the enjoyment of others, it's just pathetic. Typically this point arrives about the time any "spoilers" become more-or-less common knowledge. The example I gave is a twist ending that by this point is PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE. There is an ENTIRE TROPE named after it. Even people who have never seen the movie know that "Rosebud" is his sled. My point is that if someone wants to reveal a twist or plot point or other "spoiler" about something that is old enough that anyone who wants to could learn it from a web search anyway, they shouldn't be told "spoilers! "; they should be free to do so if they wish.
I don't think they will. I would like it too but I don't think it will happen because of Sandman in Spider-Man already beating Clayface to the silver screen.
***** Yeah I hear that same reason for Killer Croc's unlikliness due to The Lizard. I wish we didn't live in a world where a character in a movie prevents another character from a completely different franchise from appearing just because they're similar. Then again, I also wish I lived in a world where The Mandarin actually appeared in a movie and wasn't an actor named Trevor, so what do I know?
Dr. Octo i also wish i lived in a world where people didn't jump to conclusions without doing vague research on the subject they are gonna yell dc or marvel comics
Matt Hagen and Ethan Bennett are my two favorite versions of Clayface even though the other versions seem pretty cool too. Also he's one of my favorite Batman villains.
Ethan Bennett, the forgotten and underrated Clayface glad I still found some people who did remember him, he's the Clayface you feel for, an encounter with the equally underrated and actually great Joker that sadly ends badly for Ethan, I'm glad they could cure him in the end (and damn, The Batman had some amazing character designs if you ask me)
You mean the almighty poo face who throws all his poo at you he got is powers buy swimming in a toilet that a man that ate 500 runny eggs has just pooed in and this poo allowed the poo face to turn into different poo shapes. Boom just did the origin in 2 minutes
For me, the Ron Perlman-voiced Clayface was my intro to the character and will always stand in front the rest of the other actors. While Basil Karlo's been ret-conned into the ONLY Clayface post-Flashpoint, I wish they'd gone with Hagen.
I liked the Animated Series origin best, where Matt Hagen becomes Clayface through tragic circumstances. Also, the scene in that episode where, in disguise, he asks Taggert, "Why don't you tell them about me?" STILL sends chills down my spine when I see it.
There's another clayface in another batman series. He wasn't matt Hagen. He was a cop who was bruce's childhood friend and the joker was the one who turned him into clayface.
w0nd100 lots!!! including himself. he knew the voices in his head was coming from a receiver in his ear cuz he doesn't call himself bruce. He calls himself bat......
***** Bennett was a new Clayface created specifically for The Batman. He was used as a replacement for Two-Face, who the creators of the show couldn't use (like the Sacrecrow and Ra's al Ghul)
I loved Clayface from the batman animated series. He was evil but had his problems and Batman always seemed to pitty him. A powerful villain who could turn himself into anyone and create powerful weapons from his own thoughts. Great character and supervillan
Yep! In that respect, he's very well, named! Come to think of it, if Clayface appears in a live-action film, they should cast Robert Englund as the voice of him!
The original story is actually pretty dark, never heard of it before up until now and I love it, however, from what I've seen, they don't utilize his abilities much
Just finished watching his origin in BATMAN TAS, such a beautiful story in this one! Id love to see a live action tragedy-romance of this film by Guillermo DT!
I only came here after the first episode and trailer of Batman Caped Crusader where the golden age basil karlo appears as clayface with one shapeshifting ability
I like both of the origins for Clayface in The Batman TV series. A detective with whom Bruce Wayne is friends, Ethan Bennet gets infected by Joker Toxin, and inhales it, with the side effect of hm becoming Clayface. It's an interesting retelling, and later, Bruce goes on to develop a cure for Ethan, which lets him be normal again. It's a nice story and for a change with comics, one with closure and an end.
What about the version of Clayface from the cartoon you show clips from? He was using a facial cream to enhance hes beatuy but fell into a tub of that clay and emerged as clayface... Id say thats the most known and liked version of ClayFace and its odd that you didint even mention hes background.
"There's a guy murdering all of the people who have death scenes in this play, hunny. You have a death scene. You probably shouldn't go on." "Ya, but i ga'go get ma' fiffeen mins o faaaaame child!"
Detective Comics #40 looks like the best Golden Age comic ever! Thanks for doing this! We totally need a Captain Cold or Cheetah villain origin next though. We need to have some Flash and Wonder Woman exposure!
wow the original clayface sounds so cool like phantom of the opera, i would have loved to see this clayface in the movies or show. still the one from the animated series was cool the scene of him having that gunk shoved down his throat still makes me shiver so cool
They would have to reboot Batman again in order for Clayface to work. There's no room in the current Batman's "movie universe" for such a magical character. He just doesn't fit, and that's too bad. The new Batman seems to fight human beings only. But if they can make it work, it will be miraculous.
It wouldn't be hard at all, he just wouldn't be quite the same. They just have use the version from the start of the video, where he's just a serial killer.
Clay Face is one of my favorite Batman villans out there his story I think could be better but Clay Face is pretty OP he can make any wepon he wants he can also trun into any preson he wants like in Batman Arkham City how he turned into Joker
That robocop reboot... good lord... first off, he wasn't even that injured from the explosion. What, he lost a leg I think? His new robocop body didn't seem robotic, it was more G.I Joe style. ED-209 was awful, didn't have any character to it at all. Garbage movie, just awful.
My favourite Clayface is from "The Batman" series and also the more he shape shifts the easier it becomes for him to ship shift but not due to skill or experience but due to his molecular structure changing within the cells.
Yep. Saw that originally around 20 years ago. Gave me one nightmare, then became my favorite power any batman villain had (meaning not my fav villain, just favorite power). But in the animated series, his origins were a bit different.
I prefer Matt Hagen over all the other Clayface incarnations, mostly because I grew up with Batman: The Animated Series as a kid, but also because I saw more passion in Matt than the others. Sure, Basil Carlo had so much passion for his actor career that he literally went insane when someone re-enacted his masterpiece without him, but Matt Hagen was literally burning with passion for his job. It was his passion, his life. All hail Matt Hagen.
Matt Hagan in the animated series is really kind of a unique character to the show rather than adaptation of the Hagen in the comics. They combined elements of both Hagen and Karlo, gave him an original origin, and made him a more tragic villain.
That's the point though, I like tragic villains. I like it when a bad guy is made out of issues that could happen to any regular person but they are hit harder by it, and thus choose a life of crime from it to try and 'get away' from that fact.
4:19 my gosh! Clay face would be a fantastic belly dancer if he tried to make a career disguised as hot belly dancer to entertain people. The irony is he would also be the ugliest too haha.
Ethan Bennet (from 'The Batman' cartoons) is my favorite Clayface, he is turned into Clay Face when Joker infects him with something can't remember the name, his design is a really cool looking one.
Clayface deserves to be in a movie. That's what DC needs to do. Just hire good storywriters to make sure they include some details from the comics into the script. Then, make sure the CGI looks good.
He was just a random boss villain thrown in, we heard absolutely nothing of Clayface before or after that boss fight. It really wasn't a bedazzling experience. U just got to fight mud... It got pretty dirty xD
Broockle That's not true! There's a few easter eggs and lines of dialogue that hint at Clayface. Like Harley saying "Mr. J you look perfect. Oh, that's not you is it?" Still an underwhelming final boss....
AbuOsama29 ye there was that.... forgot, didn't think much about it while playing and then when I got to the boss I was like "zomg this guy is kinda like Plasmus except he's brown" xD Not too much of a DC nerd ^^
The original clay face, Basil Karlo is based off Boris Karloff who during the 30s was one of the faces of horror films such as the mummy and Frankenstein hence the character's origin as an iconic horror movie monster actor.
I had only known the backstory for the animated series incarnation. I always felt sorry for the old chap. Actually, The old animated series would always make you feel sorry for all the villains and of course for Batman as well. Man I loved that series, creepy as hell, but Loved it.
in animated series "THE BATMAN" clayface was a former cop...but i like the animated series "Batman" version of clayface...touching at the end of each episode of this villian
+Chadrick Thompson Rewatching that show after I scoffed it off as a kid. Actually a damn good show, and I do love their interpretation of Clayface (though his final push into being a straight up bad guy in the elevator shaft felt a bit too quick.)
I also liked his story in the series The Batman where he was a cop and a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne, that was tired of the new breed of supervillains always escaping because the he was only human. He was captured by Joker who tortured and experimented on him until he became a clay-man. Despite warnings from doctors that changing into his clay form could cause permanent physical harm, and warnings from his good friend Bruce that he was becoming what he hated, he was addicted to the power.
In my opinion, Batman the Animated Series has the most logical, and tragic, storyline for the Clayface origin. Clayface is one of Batman's more fantastical villains, and the animated series I could buy into more, over the others. I liked that it kept the original idea of a aging actor, and that he was over exposed by the cosmetic that made him able to play various roles.
I thought Clayface's origin was when Matt Hagen had an accident deforming his face, but Roland Daggett gave him some special clay that reforms his face in exchange for doing some jobs for Daggett. When Hagen failed too many jobs, Daggett stopped giving him the clay, so in an attempt to get it himself, Hagen was attacked by Daggett's men and was poured with a giant container of the clay, thus turning him into Clayface.
Clayface was also in the show, Gotham, being James Gordon and Penguin's father, its a shame he didn't get an arc in the later seasons, only Season 2 when he first appeared, he had an arc, then came back in one episode of Season 3 and that's it.
The Preston Payne Clayface (in the pressurized suit) story with the mannequin dead wife-substitute was written by Alan Moore and was used as the basis for the TAS Mr Freeze, which in turn launched the modern Mr Freeze as a character.
I thought the Clayface origin that was done in the animated series was the best overall. It was Matt Hagan, but with the Basil Karlo story of being an actor. However, this version of Hagan was a self obsessed actor that was using an experimental cosmetic to keep away his wrinkles as he was getting older. Long story short, the Mob doused him with gallons of the stuff, and it altered his body to the shape shifting monster he would become. However, he didn't have a time limit of his shapshifting.
I wish they made Matt Hagen into basil Karlo
Indraroh I thought Ethan Bennett's Clayface was almost up to par from The Batman, but maybe it's because he had a more special place in Bruce's heart.
I loved that version.
+Indraroh Karlo, and Hagan are the only ones I know.
I loved the way they used clayface in Arkham City, the plot twist was just delicious.
Well in Arkham City when Ra's al Ghul used the Lazarus Pit lightning hit Wonder Tower like a lighting rod for it to work, with Clayface that didm't happen, but I don't know.

Dammitall! I was a little kid when I bought that comic at 2:55 with Matt Hagan finding that pool. Today that would be worth thousands!
If they ever do a Marvel DC crossover. It would be cool to see Sandman and Clayface join
I loved clayface, a dark plot for a villain
That was the TAS origin.
Clayface was also in the show, Gotham, being James Gordon and Penguin's father, its a shame he didn't get an arc in the later seasons, only Season 2 when he first appeared, he had an arc, then came back in one episode of Season 3 and that's it.
The OG Clayface is actually really good and very popular among fans. That includes me.
I loved the black Clayface on THE Batman series. It was messed up how he became the character.
So much potential for a live action movie villain now that the technology is there. Maybe Affleck's Batman is the one to finally take on Clayface.
I love how Batman's Villians always have some grievance with society or someone and it turns them criminally insane
My two favorite version of Clay face are Matt Hagan from Batman the animated series and Ethan Bennett from The Batman 2005 reboot.
Would love to see an origin for Bullseye, Mysterio, Black Adam, and a hero origin for Neil Gaiman's Sandman, or maybe Jesse Custer from Preacher.
The Preston Payne Clayface (in the pressurized suit) story with the mannequin dead wife-substitute was written by Alan Moore and was used as the basis for the TAS Mr Freeze, which in turn launched the modern Mr Freeze as a character.
You guys forgot to mention "The Batman" cartoon series version of him. Honestly it's one of my more favorite clayface interpretations, almost tragic.
Clay Face is my 3rd favorite Batman villain.
By far the most underrated Batman villain, in my opinion
not really his most battled but one of his most lethal villains batman has ever faced
The clayface from one of the later batman animated series was my favourite, mainly because I felt sorry for him.
