This is a side of Bruce Wayne that is always ignored even in the comics. He's a businessman that cares about his employees and wants what's best for Gotham.

@pins6663 The whole point is the 'businessman' aspect is at the forefront because he wants to be seen as not totally selfless. But largely he is a philanthropist and invests in his company for greater causes especially around Gotham.
Ultimately it all falls under the tragedy of his parents death and how he tries to make amends for it by any means necessary. Batman is always a great fictional example of how our childhood maps our future.

If you think about it, this was heartwarming on Bruce Wayne's part. Bruce Wayne was being fair with E. Nygma(despite the obviously mental instability); he gave him a chance to prove himself and he genuinely listened, and when he rejected the idea, he told Nygma why he rejected the offer and it was a reasonable one because he was concerned of the negative implications.

I mean Nygma is basically the autistic genius here who isn't understood. There are a lot of people like this, especially in technical jobs. They blow their own chances because of their quirks and inability to conduct themselves socially in a way most people consider 'legitimate'.
The sad part is that companies end up losing valuable talent while these people get depressed and have their talents wasted. And in this case that manifested itself in lashing out against society.

I wasn't a fan of Adam West's campy Batman portrayal or George Clooney's, but for some people, they think that West was the original, (so to them) portraying the character this way would be more true to the character (at least from what they know). But Batman did not begin with Adam West in the 60's, but was played years earlier by men like Lewis Wilson and Robert Lowery. The character was based on serious characters like detectives and heroes: the Shadow, Wes Roland's "The Bat," ...etc... With Batman Forever, I see the villains being campy and the protagonists playing their roles more seriously.

"Why be brutalised by an uncaring world?"
I think that line spoke volumes about this version of the Riddler. Maybe because of his genius from an early age, he'd grown up as a nerdy outcast with no friends, maybe only picked on or brutalised by bullies, and while he wasn't studying, the only friends he could really turn to were those on the television screen, a form of escapism from the harsh and unforgiving reality of life. So that became his goal, to turn that dream into a NEW reality, no matter how dangerous it may have seemed (like Spellbinder's VR proved many years later), so that maybe no one would ever have to go through what he experienced growing up ever again. It seemed like giving the public a chance to be happy in a world of misery was his goal, and when he was denied that chance, it drove him over the edge, and the side effects of his Box only began to damage his mind even more, especially when he discovered much later on that his device could copy other people's thoughts to his mind and his greed got the better of him.
I think in a way, this was one of the best interpretations of the Riddler we ever got. We all know Jim Carrey's history of depression. Putting on a happy face and being all wacky is just a disguise. That same logic could've easily applied to the Riddler here. Funny and smiley on the outside, but actually deeply tragic within.

Val Kilmer was a pretty decent Bruce Wayne and did a good solid job but Jim Carrey for me made Batman Forever a really fun movie, his balance of wackiness and level of eccentric behaviour made The Riddler a very dangerous villain. The way he switched from being an eccentric fan boy looking for approval from his 'idol' to an obssesive stalker who was 'rejected' was absolutely epic.

Actually a very well written dialog. An also an interesting take on the villain. Just imagine if Facebook and Oculus VR joined forces, so much power in the hands of a few.

I almost see a similar take on Carrey’s Riddler with Paul Dano‘s Riddler how they both felt like they were connected to Bruce Wayne. Carrey wanted Bruce to be part of his experience and new technology but felt betrayed when Bruce said no. The same way that Dano plan was to get rid of all the politicians and Don Falcone, when Pattinson disapproved of the Riddler’s plans Dano felt betrayed as well

I love that Carrey and Dano's Riddler both have very similar motives for what they do. One was used almost entirely for comedic effect and another as a psychological thriller. Fine line between comedy and horror eh?
