I feel this song in my bones. I used to live in Seattle; now on the outskirts, as gentrification has changed our city. I work in the U-District. I know this place and how it affects your overall mental state. This place has a way of leading you to some semblance of escape, particularly during the 9 months of rain. I couldn’t think of a better psychological summation of how this area can beckon you into a place where a substitute for the sun can be found, where a path forward is difficult to foresee through the downpour. Yet, somehow, we feel relief this time of year when the clouds enshroud us again. It’s that time of year. Thanks for the soundtrack.
This show is bitterweet. Its a highlight - one of the best concerts they did along with Live at the Moore. But bittersweet because the guys had a feeling this might be their last together. "Sean Kinney told journalist Greg Prato in Grunge Is Dead: The Oral History of Seattle Rock Music. “Up to the moment, it was just a nail biter. Barely any rehearsing at all, guys not showing up - the same s---. Rolled out there and everything worked. Right then is when I knew, 'OK, if we never do anything again, I’m good with this. I’d rather leave on a high point instead of throwing drug paraphernalia into a garbage can in an airport, while I’m jumping on a plane, hoping to not get arrested.'”

The bassist new the guitar part which I guess is pernicatey and the new guitar play who was playing rhythm for most of this performer probably just played the bass cause it’s an easier part I think he only had a few days to rehearse this cause he was fairly new to the band

Alice in Chains had the best unplugged out of all the musicians who did the unplugged concert. Layne was an amazing singer and its breath taking the way he harmonized so beautifully with Jerry. Its comforting to know this unplugged will be there to remind everyone how great AIC was and that not so long ago music could speak to and touch your heart and your soul. Alice in Chains has been my favorite band since I bought the self titled album when I was 14. Their music has been there for me through some of the hardest times in my life. Like listening to Jar of Flies, the music takes you somewhere in your mind and you feel like the lyrics were written just for you. Jar of Flies is a musical masterpiece, the lyrics will get you in the feels. If you listen to Jar of Flies and don't feel some kind of way, then your not human. I wish I could go back in time, set in the front row and feel the incredible atmosphere in this place while they are playing. If I had a magic lamp that would be my first wish. Lol.
Strange, I've listened and watched Alice In Chains MTV unplugged so many times but somehow skipped over the last song in the set. I have never heard this song by them, or at least I don't remember hearing it. It's beautiful though chilling.

Jerry & Mike hugging...I'm sure they knew that was one of the final live performances with Layne. It was probably much more emotional being there than we know. Would have loved to see the camera following them around after the show a bit more, so we could see them chatting with Metallica and others in the audience. Wondering if Layne stuck around for a bit or if he made a bee line to the restrooms to shoot up, since the show went on for quite a stretch (for him, anyways). So powerful, poignant and _painful._ Layne was just a shell of his former self. Even the pink hair couldn't cover that up. 💔😭💔😭💔
These songs have been such solace and catharsis in my life - hell even epiphany and inspiration at times. Feel the gun pointed at me Free to run Killer is me I make my own life choices and live with them . When I’m in a situation that sucks the life out of me , then I’m free to run - but I stay in it and I’m the killer of my own soul
In about six hours I'm going to be burying the only man I truly considered to be a brother. He had struggled with his opiate addiction for most of his life, but things are much different these days. Fentanyl is so rampant, every time you use, whether it be a pill, heroin or powder, you are literally playing Russian Roulette. As if you weren't already before Fentanyl tainted the supply, but still, incredibly more risky now. People are dying so quickly, they can't even get the needle out of their arm. I have been a fan of AiC since I was in high school, before my own battle & recovery with opiate addiction. These songs have a much different meaning now. "Don't need a gun pointed at me. No need to run. The killer is me." Mark Burrough 12/3/1978-6/3/2023
@vincent s Layne's unfortunate & untimely end led me get to get clean too. I had been a huge AiC fan since I was in high school, before I ever used. Then one day in a heroin stupor, I watched the unplugged concert & realized what all these songs are really about. Maybe 2 weeks later I found my way to the methadone clinic. I haven't used since 2019, thank goodness. When I using, fentanyl was just starting to come around. Now you can hardly find a real oxy. I BEG anyone that's still using to find a buddy to use with & keep narcan on hand. I've lost someone every year to fentanyl since 2020 & it gets closer to home every time.

I remember before he died i dreamt AIC where playing some underground show and Layne was wearing a mask like that kid from fat albert, cause he wanted to keep singing without being famous. Every now and then i dream that he comes back from the dead and does stuff then i wake up dissapointed. Since 1999 when i found out in a magazine he had a drug addiction, i was always hoping hed get over it and theyd get back together
@@Monchi2006 Man I can't imagine how heartbreaking it must have been to experience Layne's decay (I mean as in being alive during that time). I was born just a couple of weeks after he died, but his music just gets to me.
The "Alice In Chains would like to thank" list is hilarious.
🤝
Wow! Layne had such a great sense for harmony. He's the cherry on top in this one.
I miss the 90's.
Me too
I'm just glad I lived thru the 90's....im 51...followed them from the start
bruhh.. really, me too
Let my recite my favorite poem. Roses are red violets are blue when I listen to Alice in Chains my neighbors do too.
Doug Doug 😏🤣 Same...
lol so do mine
As does anyone driving in my car, or beside me on the road, or at work. slaying it!
Roses are red.
It’s to dark to see.
No need to run.
The killer is me.
I get an extra 50km per litre when I crank AIC !!! @@turnipsucks6416
This song, and performance is so haunting. Layne seems reluctant to sing it cause he knows its about him and his fate.
Greatest sound for any acoustic set you will ever hear. AiC Unplugged was a masterpiece of raw talent and brilliant musicianship. The drums especially are amazing. Greatest band from the 90's by a country mile. Greatest singer ever.
Dude layne is SUCH a legend when you see the credits roll and see his name it's almost like seeing daffy duck or some shit, he was so amazing and died so young tragically it just doesnt even seem real
The way Jerry hugs Mike 🥺
Lump in my throat watching Layne walk off stage. God damn it's heartbreaking.
Layne is at rest now, not suffering. RIP.
Suffering is great. It means you are alive.
be alive is shit if youre suffering
This song is so powerful to me, it gives me chills every time I listen to it. Especially this version, at the end the roar of the audience makes it that much better, imo.
Jc is serious composer
I enabled the subtitles, read all the words and realized just how powerful this song really is...Damn these guys were the best!
I’d love nothing more than to hug Layne
Same brother.
I am so damn pleased that this now exists here on UA-cam for the world to watch, listen, feel, and enjoy.
"AN EXTRA SPECIAL THANKS TO YOU FANS FOR STICKING WITH US ALL THESE YEARS. PLANS FOR A GROUP HUG ARE TEMPORARILY ON HOLD. BUT WE'LL LET YOU KNOW WHEN THE SCHEDULE CLEARS UP." - I'd say this performance inevitably turned into our group hug. - But I'm still waiting on that Jerry! 😃🤘🏼
Wait, what?
Love Jerry’s Calhoun Tubbs/Living Color shoutout 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.
Still my fav band 27 years after I heard Dirt for the first time.
Layne will always be the man 🤘🙏🏻💜
Bought me to tears honestly seeing laynes last days . How down he was. Trying everything he has to solidly perform. Damn
Such a beautiful and poetic comment. Thank you for sharing ❤️
Rotten Apple some fans don't realize that they were all fucked up back then. Layne's problems were just more public
ItsTimeIDisappear09 that's true.
Rotten Apple check out AiC live in Frankfurt,Ger.,remastered, great show.
Damn, he throw shit in the trash cans at airports too??
damn, never knew that.. thanks for sharing..
Can't get enough of this song. Sounds so epic live. Brings me to a peaceful place I don't even recognize.
It’s Sad To Hear This Especially That This Was The Last New Song Alice In Chains Put Out There In Acoustic. I Wonder How It Would Sounded If It Was On A Record. Rip Layne 😢
I read that jerry said this song was like Queen of the rodeo that it will never ever be recorded
..
Why The Fuck Do You Talk Like This?
pero escribe como la gente pedazo de aweonao
And there it was, ladies and gentlemen..*the* best unplugged set you have saw and ever likely to see again. God bless you Layne. Thanks for the music 🙏🏼
I didn’t know Scott and Mike switched guitars for this
I just noticed that now too andi used to watch this constantly on dvd
That's not mike starr
The bassist new the guitar part which I guess is pernicatey and the new guitar play who was playing rhythm for most of this performer probably just played the bass cause it’s an easier part I think he only had a few days to rehearse this cause he was fairly new to the band
@@andrewdyke5561 it’s Mike Inez you dipshit. The band’s bassist since Starr left. No one ever said Mike Starr.
@@andrewdyke5561 We know! It's Mike INEZ!

Unplugged
This is exactly why this is The greatest band of any and all time💋🤘🏽💋
It is not, at all! They are good, and that suffices.
So true
This was just a few months before Demri died. If he looked so sad and sick here I can't imagine how much worse it was after her death :( But his angel voice will live on for eternity.
Indeed at that time they had already broken up and she was sick. He knew she would have died sooner or later.
“just something we’ve been fucking around w”
proceeds to play the most beautiful piece of music ever played
Even though I've been listening to them for decades.. it's just recently that I developed a huge crush on Jerry. I think it has a lot to do with him in this show. And he still looks and sounds SO good today. Still never saw them play live. Someday!
He is really hot!!!I agree,then and now!💋
After watching the new interview with Jerry and Lars this is much more sad than it already was before
It's 9am here in Serbia and I'm already crying
Let it out its good to cry its cleanes the soul

Poor layne... sounds like hes pleading for a second chance in this one.
I'm sure he was
Definitely was crying out for something.
Looked so sad and mentally/physically frail
It's heartbreaking seeing him lacking the confidence as he once had earlier on...
The BEST and most honest ( true to his word) lyricist I think that has ever been.
😢 ❤😢 ❤😢 ❤😢
Singing this must had been really painful to him, Jerry's lyrics on this song were about Layne.

Oop's you're right...
Jerry did write this song...
What makes it even more sad is that it was the last song of the show and when he sings 'Can i start over' really brings a tear to my eye 😢

Rest in Peace Layne, it's now 2019, 17 years later and I will forever play your body of work.
18 years now. R.i.p. to my fav singer of all time Layne 😎
singing along when you are alone and going through it boosts your mood. life is good and everything will be okay
"Let Things Be..." I struggle as much as they did with this...even now after my own tragedy...
The last part made me cry..Layne i wish i could hug uuu😔❤
Lol.
@Nick Thompsin
Here's another one Frusciante and Layne fan 😎✌🏻
"I wish I could just hug you all"
brought me to tears. We miss you Layne ♥
Jerry doing his Jerry thing!!! Gotta LOVE IT!!! Harmonization is a beautiful thing!!!
Strange, I've listened and watched Alice In Chains MTV unplugged so many times but somehow skipped over the last song in the set. I have never heard this song by them, or at least I don't remember hearing it. It's beautiful though chilling.
It wasn't on some, possibly the early CD releases. Something like that.
Me too - so I looked it up and learned MTV cut this song from the set.
Every time I watch this unplugged, I have a big wish I could just time and space Travel and give a tight hug on Layne.
Peeps dont realize just how special this show was... a true masterpiece
The credits are epic, thanking everyone from Silver Management, dog trainers to Lawn Care professionals... these guys were AMAZING. ❤ 🎶 🎸 🥁 🎤
My absolute favorite band from this era of grunge. Super talented. Every song is just brilliant. Nothing like that nowadays.
Grunge had a huge impact on my life. Thanks AIC, Nirvana, STP, Pearl Jam and Chris Cornell🙏

One of the best rock albums ever
They were so musically connected as a group. Soooo goood.
Cantrell is the greatest musician, songwriter, whatever of the last 30 years.
Watching him go out there in that shape and perform like that is real.
Man that hug between mike and Jerry was cool but we all know we wish it was Layne and Jerry man rip the legend
Damn Inez played guitar on this one an Scotty played bass!!! Never realized that before
Look even closer and Inez was playing the ascending chords then the descending chords and not Jerry. THAT was amazing.
Man, I had forgotten that Scotty switched to the acoustic bass and Mike went over and played the harmonics on acoustic guitar for the closer. Fkn awesome way to end it!
I felt like magic was captured on this album. On a whim I bought it not knowing much about Alice In Chains. One of my favorites to this day.

I saw 3 Laynes in a row on this video haha
Jerry & Mike hugging...I'm sure they knew that was one of the final live performances with Layne. It was probably much more emotional being there than we know. Would have loved to see the camera following them around after the show a bit more, so we could see them chatting with Metallica and others in the audience. Wondering if Layne stuck around for a bit or if he made a bee line to the restrooms to shoot up, since the show went on for quite a stretch (for him, anyways). So powerful, poignant and _painful._ Layne was just a shell of his former self. Even the pink hair couldn't cover that up. 💔😭💔😭💔
"Alice In Chains would like to thank the following people: housepets, general acquaintances, doctors, lawyers, flight attendants"
man... wish we could have got that group hug...
Jerry’s favorite part of the show was when Layne said “I wish I could just hug you all, but I’m not gonna”
These songs have been such solace and catharsis in my life - hell even epiphany and inspiration at times.
Feel the gun pointed at me
Free to run
Killer is me
I make my own life choices and live with them . When I’m in a situation that sucks the life out of me , then I’m free to run - but I stay in it and I’m the killer of my own soul
“I wish I could just hug you all… but I’m not gunna” you can tell Jerry got a bit of a kick outta that 😂😂👌🏻
Still watching this concert after all these years. Masterclass performance by these uber talented musicians.... 👏👏👏👏 RIP Layne 🌹
Killer is alice in chains!!
the bass player and drummer are FANTASTIC
Seeing Jerry throw that arm around Layne hits deep.
No Layne, we ALL just wanna hug you pal. The best of all. And such an incredible band, hits down deep.
This song has such a chaotic sound and feel to it
You listen to the dynamics here and you just realize these guys are the KINGS.
The killer is me."

@@vincents9620 thank you!!!
I love the transition between the joke of Jerry and the beggining of the song, it´s just fascinating how the atmosphere of the session changes.
