Lyrics:
Why's it have to be this way?
Be this way, be this way
Be this way, be this way
Be this way
Watching this whole unplugged show is like visiting someone's funeral while he is still alive: it's sad and surreal.
I've never read anything more true in my entire life.
Perfectly put couldn't have said it better myself! Their Swan Song for sure! Sure miss this guy.....
So sadly and perfectly worded we know the end result and it’s heartbreaking
You people act like he walked off the stage and died. This was1996,he didn't die until 2002,and then only after shooting more dope and coke than humanly possible.Don't ever count a junkie out until they put him in the ground.and please Pray For The Addicted.
@@tombstone1841 technically he was still alive, but you can see even on this video - he already looked like a ghost. How did he managed to stay alive for another six years is a mystery to me, but I don't think that he had a great time being isolated and losing almost all of his friends.
The Unplugged series was, IMO, the best thing MTV ever did.
whats MTV?....so sad its still not around. ridiclous actually cause it originally was awesome.
fuck I wish I could thumbs up a billion times. that's the greatest truest comment I think iv ever seen on shitube
No doubt at all right here I pray to God one day music will find itself again and we may grace the deep whole which is unplugged
And out of the unplugged series, this is the best show, and out of all the songs included on this show, this is the best version of the song
What about Teen Mom? 😂
this is probably one of the darkest songs ever written, ever. its not just hopelessness and desperation, it's the ACCEPTANCE that nothing you do will change it and acceptance that if it kills you, it does. its so powerful
I love it..Tripod is an awesome AIC album.Dark album the way it should be.Layne and Jerry speak the truth in the lyrics.
Perfectly said.
I must admit.. very well put!!
it's the most beautiful.🖤
Layne had total control of the Mood he Sets
Blows my mind seeing him from the Sleaze Performances high energy to Dark Haunting Pulling me into his mind
Frogs is so spooky. It seems so desolate toward the end. The altered voice, the defiant lashing out, while the music just trudges along unaffected. Then, it just ends. Love it.
Hearing him wail "why's it have to be this way" still hurts. Not sure it will ever stop hurting.
Yes....
Still watching in 2021 and heart wrenching.."why's it have to be this way" . We miss you Layne.
Yea bro,
oh shut up brandon you 14 year old girl. You guys are so dramatic. I've loved this band since the early 2000s, Layne is gone but it doesn't mean you have to cry about it and psychoanalyze each sentence for 20 years.
@@LilHaseProductions jesus, calm down, boy.

Why these guys aren’t in the Hall of Fame is beyond me. A pure symbol of the grunge era. This unplugged set alone should’ve solidified that! That fucking voice is pure gold! High range with endless power. RIP brother❤
The Hall of Fame is a joke 🤣 true rock lovers couldn’t give a fuck about the HOF 🤣 all corporate bullshit
Politics and usual bullshit
I think they will go in the HOF. Just give it time
@@williamdavid9272 I waited a long time for NIN to get into the HOF, so I feel within the next few years Alice In Chains will be in there.
The fact so many lesser bands imo & some artist who aren’t even rock or metal have made it into the HOF but AIC haven’t😡 I know the band is still goi g strong with Layne & Duvall but 90s AIC needs to be inducted! Truthfully I really don’t care anyway we all know what’s up!

Hey Derek. Must have read this a 100 times and it makes me smile everytime....😊. All the best from Denmark
Is that from something?
@Julian Baxter Hey Baxter. Yes and part/line 1 and 3 is Layne. And shows Layne's cool and insane funny humor😁.
@@sundigest1121 Hey Boussetta. Its from the unplugged show. You can hear it on the CD or on some uploads here on UA-cam. And its just a show of dear Lanye's humor.
At the 14 second mark Jerry Cantrell realized he was playing too fast so he slowed it down. This is what makes live music great. It's never perfect. Its real.
Yer right! Never noticed listening to the album.
I’ve literally never noticed that and I’ve seen this show a million times..
Had to go back and see and you’re right 🙏
Jerry was actually on point. layne was looking for the lyrics so he slowed to give him time. look at Jerry looking at layne with a face saying come get it together.
@@alexklitschko6918 nope. Jerry was covering for layne looking for lyrics
I'm a pretty decent singer, had training in clean and metal style vocals but Layne was a different breed man. Ik everyone here appreciates his epic chest belts but i gotta say his vocal agility, breath control and resonance is next level. The guy was able to hit these crazy powerful note and hes barley moving or taking a breath. The things he could have taught to the next generation... RIP
Not to mention the harmonies he often did with Jerry. Jerry once said something along the lines of "he did the wrong things at the right time". Truly a unique singer!
And.....he is doin all of this while being a HUGE heroin junkie
@@ryanbarr2718 He wasn't big into heroin until during/after the Van Halen tour so his peak performances from 1990-mid91 he wasn't really a junkie, just drank and did a lot of coke
Although you definitely are right that he was still extremely impressive during his heroin struggles
Almost baffling that he was able to sing well on Get Born Again (I know pro tools were used but they were to mask his lisp and not actually alter the notes etc)
What do you think about Hank Williams
@@bartembrey6106 Hank Williams is one of the goats of country but this is a AIC video you are in the wrong places my guy
The bass on this song is out of this world.
Sean Kinney is a very underrated drummer
he is not underrated at all
Yes agree with you 100% jar of flies is a great example. Listen to the cymbals on no excuse, headphones are best but the whole album is great drumming 👍
Sean has the amazing ability to be great but subtle hang just enough in the background to make all of them shine.
Agreed 100 % the unplugged series really showed just how great he is and his ability to hang back and play quietly with all his subtle highlights
Is a very technic drummer.
"7am on a Tuesday in August" that's the 22nd which is today. Happy 54th heavenly birthday, Layne. Miss you.
This acoustic set takes on a whole new level of raw sadness and mourning of someone I never knew.
Hi Jerry, never expected a reply from you, I love your skills and talent and truly miss the old days when music had real meaning and story telling.
The band was one of a kind and so are you.
Truth. I've spent hours once again, listening to this Unplugged session of AIC, & honestly, it takes me to a really dark place. But I can't stop listening to Layne's haunting harmonies & watching each of their facial expressions & eyes wondering what they were thinking during each song. So, so sad.

The way Layne sounds at 5:11 with that mic is fucking amazing.

This is a performance that will stand the test of time. It showed how well they played together and how well they fed off each other. They were all at their peak musically and it showed. Layne put so much emotion in his vocals that it breaks your heart just listening to him sing. Ive had many times where i felt myself living the chorus, and it hurts knowing others have too. This concert is one that i can listen to in its entirety and not get tired of it. It shows human emotions and how people are connected just through music. Layne was going through it and was able to just pour all his bound emotions into one of the best vocal performances ever. And all the instruments were blended perfectly. Whomever was the sound engineer was a beast.
I just watched Jerry Cantrell talk about this show with Lars (the Metallica guy), and Jerry was talking about something horrible -- the band about to end, the dead end one of them was approaching, that in a way made this show extra special. There won't be any more tours, or shows, or songs. Nothing. You might as well say, it's our farewell show. Without that dread looming, without that pall....man I just love this band
On his knees, asking Must I accept my fate? He's angelic here.
Was proud when a friend of mine asked me "dont you ever grow tired, of that same old shit" - Referring to AIC unplugged, Live at the Moore and my other childhood favorites.
To which I genuinely replied "No! Never!" 100% honest!
Listening in '23 and still the best
Yup
Everyday I'm listening! Such a talented group! Laynes voice can go from low to high....Every one of them made this band!
Not only you’re hot, you’ve good taste too, which makes you even hotter
Yep same its amazing
Me too ✋️
Layne is singing with a pain that you would never understand unless you’ve been there. With depression, Drugs don’t make you feel good, they keep you from feeling bad.
Amen brother 💔
But ultimately make you feel hopeless because now your stuck using and scared to quit !!! And that's what the song portrays!! Hopelessness and it's beyond sad !! I know !!
He went to rehab 13 times. The final time, he was doing ok until his effing father pressured him into relapse. That is not a parent. That is a demon. My mother had my little brother cooking meth and selling for her at the age of 11. She never earned her title with either of us.
Glad to see so many Layne Staley fans showing love for this masterpiece. I feel I am not alone. Thank you AIC family

AIC's unplugged is THE single concert I could listen to over and over again and never get bored. Since the 90's to this day I have been loving their music and honestly it never gets old. So immortal. Rest in peace beautiful Layne
Go watch love hate love live at the Moore. Definitely laynes best live performance if not THE BEST of all time.
Yep I'm never sick of it either..Alot of my old 90s favorites I am sick of but this never gets old..It's true power and emotions..Aic had soul.
Junkhead on the Singles premier night was great as well.

Jerry Cantrell, one of the most underrated guitarists and songwriters. AIC is definitely the heaviest of the Big Four.
Alice in Chains: King of Grunge
Don't forget Soundgarden
Jerry is one of the best songwriters ever, absolute legend, still writing kick ass shit today 30+ yrs later
Yes. Selling millions of records, being nominated for ELEVEN Grammy awards. MTV Video Music Awards. Billboard Awards. American Music Awards. Still selling tickets to his shows 30 years later. Signature guitars made by huge corporations. A spot on every "top 100 guitarists ever" list. More money than he could ever spend. And still being talked about and appreciated by people to this day who weren't even born when he started his band decades ago.
Definitely "underrated"... Sure thing
@@artyomkurakin3393 I think Johathan by "Big Four" he meant Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains. At least for me that's the "Big Four".
Yes the big 4, from Seattle was ALICE IN CHAINS, Pearl Jam, soundgarden and stone temple pilots.
The big 5 GRUNGE included Stone Temple Pilots
My mom used to hangout with Layne, just found this out and Iv been binge listening aic since. Truly a one and a kind vocalist
“7am on a Tuesday in August” Layne Staley was born Tuesday, August 22, 1967.
Sean Kinney’s complex drum beat and the ability to play it at that pace amazes me. He knew when Jerry got the pace right and jumped right in… just an underrated drummer in my opinion.
Just like taylor, sean has been playing since he was a little kid
It sounded to me like Sean stepped down Jerry's too fast opening. But I could be wrong. Sean is a terrific drummer.
IKR, Sean is one of the best drummers of the grunge era
Sean isn’t underrated, he’s one of the wealthiest, most famous, and successful drummers of his generation and gets plenty of praise.
Agreed
Just the pain in his eyes. This man suffered a tremendous loss and he has given up on living. Rest easy Layne, we won't forget you.
Yes totally agree with you.. layne suffered a lot which he shouldn't of have soneone like him with all talent and love he had for people. He deserved sobmuch more in life such a loss to have him leave this world too soon. 💔 RIP My ONE & ONLY KING LAYNE S.
I can totally feel Layne's pain. Although I'm years after my opiate addiction, whenever I play this song it's hard not to break down because I've been where he was at this time and I wish he had made it through like I was fortunate enough to have done
Just goes to show that money doesn't make it any better when you're heart is broken.
When he passed, my heart was broken also.
nd you see top 100 singers of Layne's era and he was in the low 20's.
What kind of s**t is that.
I've never ever heard a more diversified singerand the level of feeling was and still to this day unparalleled for any type of music or so called genres.
I am a drummer, started in 86 and I like speed metal (Behemoth, Nile,) ect. But if the Singer and band has feeling to it I Love it. Layne and band for example.
Rest In Peace to the best all around singer live that will ever live.

lyrics:
What does friend mean to you?
A word so wrongfully abused
Are you like me, confused?
All included but you
Alone
The sounds of silence often soothe
Shapes and colors shift with mood
Pupils widen, change their hue
Rapid brown avoid clear blue
Why's it have to be this way?
Be this way
Be this way
Be this way
Be this way
Be this way
Flowers watched through wide eyes bloom
A child sings an unclaimed tune
Innocence spins cold cocoon
Grow to see the pain too soon
Why's it have to be this way?

Off the wall, I scraped you
I gotta wake, it comes this way
I can't wait no more
It comes this way (it comes this way)
To drown this ache
To reinstate (Everyone dead, everyone)
(You put me through) Take your place (Put me through hell)
Heaven direct your shape (Heaven direct)
You see I can do it so well
Your expiration date
Your expiration date
Fate, date
Expiration date
This one is gonna last too, hate
Never gonna fuck with me again
My own clean slate
Don't fuck with me again

I love this version a thousand times more than the studio. Makes me feel like I'm in a swamp in the middle of the night, it's all gross and shit.
I think that’s also why it’s called frogs jt really suits the whole gross swampy feeling
For me the vocal harmonies really make the song, and they’re missing from this version :(
Theres an audio recording of a creek filled with frogs in the background of the studio version, hence the name
@@CTheRevillusionS this version is really really good, but the guitar part leading up to the chorus is missing (but it may be impossible to replicate in an acoustic setting anyway so i'm totally fine with that). studio version definitely has the heavier atmosphere.
.. and wonderful.
Sean Kinney is sooo amazing
One of the darkest, mysterious build up melodies of all time. A chilling masterpiece. That eerie end of the guitar string touch that ends every Layne’s sentence is something so simple, yet so unusual.
The harmonics are well done indeed
This song is one of their best in my opinion. Not only does Layne sound wicked and super intense, the whole band sounds amazing and original. I particularly love the rhythm section here. Sean's drum grooves are totally on point and detailed. And the way Mike obtained that growl from an acoustic bass is out of this world. Let alone Jerry's guitar parts, from which the song was born and took form. Amazing band and Layne's something that can happen only once in history
I know it's really sad😔 I mean he knew how insanely gifted & talented he was, he just couldn't get past his demons. Jerry Cantrell is an Awesome singer, Amazing guitarist & a lyrical genius! Sean Kinney Kick ass drummer!! And both Mike Star & Mike Inez are/were excellent bassist's, I mean seriously the whole band was f***ing amazing!! A man so passionately singing at his own eulogy. It still breaks my heart to this day. I’ve been so in love with their music for so many years now and I’m telling you no one can make me feel the lyrics like Layne. He was a complete master at his craft and I only wish he could have had the same passion for living as he did for telling stories. No one on this green earth like him. And probably never will be. Long live grunge. You are sorely sorely missed Layne.
Indeed. There’s a real funereal feel to this whole gig, but especially this song. Heartbreaking.
This version of the song, specifically in video will ALWAYS make me cry, the pain in his eyes. My brother was a heroin addict that passed away due to aids, so everytime I glance his eyes, I can see clearly the tiredness and sadness that goes so well with addiction. Oh Staley, I cry for you and at the same time for my brother. You two were major assholes. You could totally be here still
Sometimes those soft souls aren’t meant to be here long. Earth and life is vicious and it takes a rock to make it through this thing for a long time. Soft souls can’t handle it and that’s just how it goes, but they teach us to try and fight towards making the world a better and kinder place in the future. One day we won’t all have to be so rock hard and the loving souls before paved that way.

@@liveShit Nah. I think that majority of the songs from Alice in chains are way darker than one.
It’s 2023 now 😊.
I’m listening forever!
If you're listening to this in 2023, YOU are amazing, and I know you're going to pull through this. We're all here for you
Yes this unplugged session has been a therapy session for me for many years.
This song is dark and sad.
@@wyattatm6989 Exactly. Anyone going out of their way to listen to this song right now more than likely could use a little bit of encouragement
Absolutely, I'm finally feeling better lol
He fought some wicked demons,
you can feel it, such an amazing performance. Layne Staley is a great artist. R.I.P.
no demons, just humans....
Demons is correct. There is darkness in the spirit world. Layne talks of these things even if its subconsciously
This version makes me feel nostalgic about something that I don't know what it is. Such a masterpiece.
I feel the same way and was trying to think, if it reminds me of another song.
My thoughts exactly the first time I heard this song.
Thats sad. You must be a clone.
@@karenmcboogerballs3434 Not sad at all.
Best MTV unplugged gig ever
I was in college during this time. I used to be able to just put MTV on for studying. It was non stop incredible performances, and I could look up from studying and get lost in a video. We had the best concerts, reap, pure party supplies, and we knew how to talk to each other. Cell phones were not for everyday use. RIP Layne
I loved reading the nostalgia in your comment. I was a kid during the 90s, very fortunate to have been alive at that time and still have so many memories but I often find myself wishing I had been a young adult during that decade. It seems like it was the idyllic time to have been college-aged. 🖤
If I told you some concerts I was at, you would scream. We didn't know except we always said " the nineties are the sixties upside down." It wasn't idyllic but it was fun.
I HATE THE YOU TUBE COMMENT SECTION
@@karenmcboogerballs3434 And? If you hate it, stay off if it. Simple.
Never heard someone’s voice change so much in such short period of time and still sound amazing even in the end.... GOAT
Finally they are uploading the MTV Unplugged songs I wish they would release a Blu-Ray remaster of the show
meanwhile 360p intensifies
it's impossible. This show was not shoot on motion picture film
Word!
Rip to the one who did their best to put it up on UA-cam
Lol I bought the dvd for 5 bucks 10 years ago 😂
Alice In Chains and Nirvana were the best to ever do MTV Unplugged
No one can compare to Layne Stanley or Kurt Cobain on vocals and feeling wise , their vocals truly came from the heart and pain they had experienced
Magical
Well ... My son is named after Layne. His name is Layne Staley Vernon Fisher .. So.. You can guess how much i love Layne.
That's Awesome
There are many. Some that are old enough to have families of Their Own. Some that are teenagers toddlers babies.

@@gomezaddams6470 imnot quite understanding what your saying
@@ChesterBennington4ever he touched so many people that people have been naming their children after him since the beginning and they still are.
Living in Seattle and being in the music business around here. At the beginning people in Seattle were naming their kids after him a lot so I saw them grow up. I never thought about it being all over the world
My oldest son is Layne as well.
Legendary moment in time.
This is what u call perfection
I drift off during this song… it’s wonderful’
My favorite song from this show. So damned haunting.
Better than the studio version. You can feel this song, it's amazing!
'On a Tuesday in August', Layne would have turned 56 today. Happy birthday legend!
Happy Layne Staley day 🤘
22 years old and I love this shit. My pops always had me listening to these guys when he would take me to school growing up💪🏼
Same
yall lucky baztards!
Staley and Cantrell were like the Plant and Page of the 90's grunge scene. They just played so well off each other and made their sounds unique. I wonder if we'll ever see anything like it again.
Some one has to actually make rock music first...and im torn. Part of me says rock is over because we dont have the type people whod make rock. Everyone is too sensitive and uptight and narcissistic and obsessed with perfection and beauty. You can say all you want about rock n roll, but not ever has the notion of vanity and narcissism been interlocked with rock music. Thats just not what rock is.
The other part of me thinks im beginning to see a rebellious undertone on the come up. Take a bunch of people who are ostracized from the woke society and are shunned as improper, and stick guitar in their hand and put them in an arena full of folks who feel the same, and maybe we get something like the next grunge movement. One that doesnt care about likes or selfies or being woke , and decides to disconnect from the web, dress like crap on purpose and are intentionally unwoke. Could very well be the next big culture shift
@@noahkb80 very interesting opinion!!! Thanks, I enjoyed reading that. I certainly hope so too....unfortunately all the things you mentioned are so prevalent that I don't think it'll happen 😢
@@babaluski5 me too. Sometimes i get a thought or feeling, i feel like i may be able to talk it into existence. And my imagination runs me lol. But i try to be hopeful. I dont know life without rock music. Born in 80, had a sister 5 yrs older than jammed big hair band and grundge eras, my folks were hippies, so there was classic rock to explore and enjoy, then.the ealry 2000s, which i just call grownling(but i liked alot of it) so ive been surrounded by rock my entire life. In both directions. The notion of no more rock is hard to comprehend. But someone the other day brought up other styles like jazz or older stuff, and they are gone. Not just eras , but total genres of music. So its possible and looks to be the case, that rock is gone. Which just absolutely breaks my damn heart.
But thanks for comment. I know its a wordy post. I just kinda type like i hear it in my head. For better or worse...
PhuryousOne No doubt, Staley one of the best singers ever and Jerry is one of the best song writers ever which is evidenced by him writing the large majority of AiC’s music and still putting out good AiC albums today.both total legends
@@noahkb80 I see it too, tbh. I predict that the revolt is a strong, powerful wave that few see coming. Have faith in the art of music... its been around a long time and I hold faith that it will be present to support the coming rebellion against vanity and social media. 🙏❤
When Layne sang through that box, I thought they were playing the actual recording of the song. Geez, he was great.
When Layne pulled that box out and sang into it, it blew me away. There's something about the way he says "fuck" too. He's an intense, intelligent artist.
@@codyagans1894 Harmonica mic..
I wonder if that's the $15 mic he mentioned in an interview not long after the release of Tripod? The one he said had been found accidentally at a market and he had been using it during the recordings to create some of the vocal effects on the self-titled record.
Listening in 2024 and never stopping , they have been with me since I was 16 🥰 Im 46 now ... Never getting old hearing Layne singing his heart out 💙
Not only did Layne have an incredible voice...but his vocal control was insane too and it shows on this song/performance. Layne, thank you for your music with AIC & Mad Season...it's helped me countless times through my own demons between battling depression/anxiety & especially my own addictions (opioids & benzos the worst) Tried detox/rehab multiple times, and finally gave Suboxone another shot. Thanks to the subs & music like this I've now been clean for 11 years. Unfortunately I've lost a lot of people I knew over the years who lost their battles. Lot of good people. RIP to them & to you Layne...we miss you.
I just want to grab Layne's face look him in the eyes and tell him it is okay, and then hug him.
Right if anyone needed love it’s him it’s heartbreaking what he let happen to him
You wish you could hug him, but you're not gonna

@@poopsteve5479 I think this is in reference to when Layne said this exact thing before
after he sings "alone" you can see and feel the pain in this mans soul
❤so true
felt to the bone "why does it have to be this way"
I've really only just 'discovered' this song recently. It's taken a long time as I have been pulled deep into the first 2 albums and the EP's ....who can blame me. Anyhooo, 'Frogs' is such a unique track. It's a dark, sombre mood, a state of mind...easy to slip into, hard to shake off, much like hard core drugs. The lyrics and phrasing sit on top of the brooding minor key based melody... .the words give the melody a much needed blow job, punctuated by the relief of a chorus or 2. An understated masterpiece. ..certainly not radio friendly because it's "not gonna fuck with me again"..."don't fuck with me.again"....,.................the final stanza of a lost soul desperately seeking control as he slips deeper, to a darker place, only to find that there are still millions of deeper, darker places on the way down....hot damn but it hits different to anything, ever.....
Hands down the best song off this set
That acoustic bass is so amazing
Such a quality drummer
I don't usually post on UA-cam, but I remember when I first heard Alice in Chains. I would go over to my friend's house every day when I was still in school and smoke bud, and one day he started freaking out saying he needed to show me something, and he put this DVD on. We watched Alice in Chains unplugged literally every day that whole school year. And even to this day, they're my all time favorite band in the world. God, I wish I could've been at this concert. Layne Staley's words and his voice together will always memorize me. Most beautiful music I've ever heard.
Warms the heart seeing someone from theyounger generations finally understand what great music is and what a great era the 90's were... growing up in my teens and 20's we always had that little voice in the back of our heads ssying this issomething special!
Nicely said... same here
Frogs is probably the best song ever written.
@bmcgmusic bruh
I remember being 4 years old in the early 90s and hearing Alice in chains my mom had facelift and the jar of flys album and I also remember the first time I herd no excuses I was at a party that my step dad took me too never should have been at that party but man I was so taken by Alice in chains I am 30 now and my mom got to see Alice in Chains at Tigers Stadium she said that they blew kiss out of the water she said kiss was good but she was there for Alice In Chains there unplugged is the best

This song hits home.
One of the most brilliant pieces of music I've ever heard.
The saddest song on the set. Incredibly breathtaking and powerful.
