    I think we all can agree that:
    -Mad respect to all these musicians, crazy good.
    -John Petrucci is so humble.
    -One thing is playing THIS stuff, and another thing is coming up with THIS stuff.

      I met Dream Theater in person after their show In Minneapolis in 2007. They are really cool guys so down to earth.

      and also he can play the drums, too. He did that during one world tour with DT in the 90s I think. He's just a humble dude. Oh, and he does backing vocals occassionally too, so he can actually do 3 things.

    John is the kinda musician that you could literally sit there and play Em wrong and he'd sit there and say good job man, that sounded off but good job. I genuinely don't think there's a bad word in him. You can tell that he wants people to play and wants people to have fun, and if they have fun playing DT music whether they do it right or do it wrong he's having a good time knowing people are having a good time playing it.

    That's me on the crap keyboard at 6:27. The sad thing is that we eventually did learn how to play the middle part of Erotomania (on real instruments, at least), but watching us floating a big ol' suck biscuit instead and losing our minds still cracks me up to this day. We made that video ten years ago or so & DT used it as part of a fan video compilation during concert intermissions for a few years. We did the toy music vids way before Jimmy Fallon made it cool!! Thanks MetalSucks!!!

      Did i hear him mention somebody playing a "baritone"( 7 string) song on a standard 6 string guitar? I tried 2 play the Metallica sample in "Peruvian skies" once by tuning my 6 string to "enter sandman". It didn't work.

    John was a guitar teacher in my area on Long Island way back in the day. Took around 15 lessons or so from him. I kind of got side- tracked after that with other things, then of course DT blew up, and that was that for lessons from him.

      @@LMC-xz6qh A good one. He had patience, at least with me. I remember getting so pissed off at myself because I couldn't get certain things right away. Wanted to smash my guitar a few times. But he had a way of not letting you over-complicate stuff. He would give you certain things to work on for the week, and that was it. After a few months, I definitely got much better than I would on my own. After that, I just kind of played to albums and taught myself.

    That Angelo Santos dance of eternity, 6 string arrangement is what I played for my berklee audition almost 20 years ago hahah (yeahh...I was THAT nerd....)
    Got me immediately thrown into ensembles with seniors and instructors who kicked my ASS up and down the hallways, humiliated six ways to Sunday....but hey, at least I got a scholarship out of it...thanks John 👍

    The solo on The Spirit Carries On has to be one of the greatest solos ever. It’s emotional but also fast and technical at times. It gives me chills everytime i hear it and i’ve heard it hundreds of times

    I love his mention of learning by playing the songs from bands he loved, it's what I did with iron maiden learning their stuff had me able to almost completely wrap my head around 22 acacia Avenue the first few times I tried it. I'd love to learn me some dream theater but John is a bit beyond my current abilities...one day though one day.

    What a positive guy! John blesses modern music with his humility, kindness, and of course his legacy of amazing tunes. We can all learn not just from his riffs but his character. I remember the first time I tried playing thru Wild Stringdom. This guy is next level creative.

      He's an excellent singer. He pulled off extremely unlikely a capella covers like Meshuggah's Bleed and Fleshgod Apocalypse's The Violation and, beyond that gimmicky stuff, he has great range, control and versatility.

    What I would give for a cover I did is seen by the original artist and they give this much praise. I would watch it anytime I was feeling down about my playing. It would give so much motivation to keep going.

    Ha ha ha! Best dude ever..hung out with him and the guys plus Dixie dregs after the Palace show in Hollywood. Such humble,down to earth, great humans..went to get a last drink and they locked the doors upstairs😁 surprise after party with about 6 fans and the band. Great Night.. Metropolis tour

    That was awesome to watch! Finally the guitar god judges his mortal servants lol. For anyone (guitar nerds) wondering about the trick at 5:22: it's an inverted power chord. Normally on a 7string guitar the guy would play the chord like "5 7 7", but he has only 6 strings so he plays only the "7 7" part with the 5th of the chord as the bass note and the root is a higher note. This kind of power chord is a little dirtier, but less bassy and, because the strings produce a low octave sub frequency anyway, it sounds just as fine even with the low root missing. Big example of this is how Smoke On The Water riff is played.
    Just sharing some insight on stuff that always fascinated and bugged me when I was first starting out! Hope it helps someone!

    Awesome John. Thanks for making The Astonishing album. I love that album, its one of my favourite. I went to see you guys on that tour and then I brought my 11yr old son to see you live on The Distance Over Time tour and bought him a tour shirt. Now he's playing a lot of DT songs. I'll take a video of him and post it in YT.

      I swear that kid might be the future best guitar player in the world. I love all the other kids his age that are killing it on here, but he seems to have an edge with the skill and I love how he puts some of his own stank into it, lots of metal guitar stank face and throwing up the metal hand whenever he can and really using that whammy bar. Putting some of his own style into it and not just a "cold cover to please dad."

      Steve Vai is extraordinarily talented, BUT a lot of what he does is too out their for my tastes. But I will not deny his greatness. John is still my favourite.

      Myfavsandlikes I can’t read music, but he’s talking about how in the video the dude with the six string guitar played a Dream Theater song that was meant for a 7 string. So, dude above you said there’s a Thrice song that he did the same “trick” with.

    Dude, I'm impressed with anyone who even attempts a Dream Theater song. DT has some awesome orchestrations and the music is like a journey rather than just chords and progressions.
    I'm working on my own acoustic version, which will be simplified, of Pull Me Under. That's one of those songs I can listen to on repeat.
