Today's video is a first time reaction to progressive metal band Dream Theater. This whole video is absolutely nuts... the musicianship is insane. Join me in watching my brain implode as I try and navigate the musical elements of a seriously crazy piece of music.
You might be wondering, why is a voice coach reacting to a non-vocal piece? Long story short, it was an accident and I have zero regrets.

Illumination theory is a great song with vocals!
“This is the Life” is a good one, or “The Looking Glass”. Not as elaborate as The Dance of Eternity, but more structured and song-like, I suppose?

Lol, yeah. I saw the song and was confused. Labrie has some pipes (ok, he does have some time periods where he's kinda rough), so didn't expect an instrumental. I'm only a minute in, so glad to hear it's going to be good.

Labrie is still very good! When i saw them, he was amazing! Age and vocal injuries have restricted him from his super high range.

I must admit I'm surprised to see Julia react to this song, not that I'm complaining I'm a huge DT fan and this is certainly one of their better songs, but it has no vocals in it.

If you haven't seen it already, look up Mike Portnoy "nightmare of Eternity" where he counts through a section with the time signatures on a chart
theres also a video where a guy beat boxes it with complete time changes that he holds up in notecards while he does it.

"Octavarium" and "Illumination Theory" are both pretty intense vocally while also being insane musically. (But nothing beats Dance of Eternity for Time Signature theatrics... you can find videos of people counting it out... constantly changing.)

most of that album is amazing. it was such a relief when it came out, I was worried it wouldn't be as good as it was.
Under a Glass Moon live in Tokyo 1993 is some of Dream Theater's best live stuff you'll hear. Back before poor James Labrie lost his voice. Also, one of the best metal guitar solos you'll ever hear.
Well, "The Dance of Eternity" is just on portion of the Concept album Metropolis Pt II, which you might as well say is one 77 minute long song. So you basically just listened to the bridge.
The album has two acts with Home kicking things off for the 2nd one.
Jordan Rudess, the key player, was admitted to the Juilliard school of music at age 9, so it's no wonder his scales and arpeggios are SO DANG CLEAN ;-)
...and 40 years later he still practices for hours every darn day God sends on earth...
@@lanreb920 the truly great ones never stop practicing. While you obviously have to have some inante talent to get to the virtuosic level, the rest is sweat and time. God bless him, Doc Svereinsen is 93 and he still practices at least 45 minutes to an hour every day.
Not only did he get in at 9, he was famous enough for it that he was featured in bandaid commercials for doing things that would make your fingers bleed.
....he also has the support of Steinway and Kerzweil. It helps a little with extra 'custom tools' they've provided him.
Minus the singer, the rest of the band went to Berklee College of Music with the 2nd drummer being a former teacher at Berklee.
Dream Theater is, without question, the greaterst, most talented prog metal band that ever existed. I am happy that you started listening to them Julia! You are at the beginning of an incredable journey. :)
The rest of the album is just amazing as well, and all the songs tell one story. Its worth a listen for sure.
They play progressive metal, it's basically a mix between seventies prog rock and heavy metal. It's a sort of musical crossover :)

They are basically the foundation of the subgenre of metal: Progressive Metal.

I listened to so much Dream Theater while attending music high school. I played the whole A Change of Seasons for my 3rd year exams on drums.
I’ve listened to that song so many times that I’ve memorized the drum pattern and I’m not a drummer 😂
My first thought when I saw this video was "oh nice, an instrumental reaction!"
Then I laughed when you were wondering if there was vocals. Loved your blind reactions.
A band that is in the same genre as DT but has more singing in it is Symphony X, with Accolade pt. 2 and Paradise Lost being two of their best songs.

John Petrucci and John Myung went to Berklee. Mike Mangini taught at Berklee before getting the DT gig, and Jordan Rudess went to Juliard.

maybe one of the LTE 1 2 or 3 could be another 1st time hearing of Julia
@Crabuki James certainly has had many issues with his voice for the past decade or so. To be fair to him, he always sounds top notch on studio recordings though, and in recent years his live performances have also improved significantly but it's still a bit hit or miss with him. Honestly though, I would love to hear Julia's take on some of his not-so-great live performances followed by a rant on vocal health.
@@RudyBleeker Yeah, he's a talented singer and, at least the one time I've talked to him, extremely nice. It's not that he isn't good - he is. It's that the players around him are absolute monsters of modern music, and he's not, so it just feels vaguely jarring even after listening to them for all these years.
Hear, hear! James LaBrie is supernice, but imho his live vocals leave something to be desired. His studio performance is always perfectly fine. No complains there. Now, whether or not one likes his timbre, is a completely different and subjective matter.

the young conductor (Eren Basbug) is from the Turkish youth symphony and is friends with Jordan, who is himself a Julliard prodigy from age 9!

@david putterman you said it right there first time. I mean they could go back and forth between only 2 different signatures and still change between those 2 108 times. And technically there are an almost limitless number of time signatures that could be created... like no one may play in 11:10 but that does not mean that it does not exist. 😜

anyway, as much as I love DT and this song specifically, I think this can be fully appreciated by musicians only. Last concert I've been in Rome I was quite sure everybody in the hall was in a band, and when Dance of Eternity main melody started I was so happy to join everyone singing ("po-po-po-po...") perfectly in time like it was the last summer pop success. Purely love for music...

I like how they make an effort to show you what they're doing, like that split screen shot with 4 musicians simultaneously.
This was insanely entertaining reaction to watch! It probably helped that I never heard this before either but you were just LOVELY to watch and listen to breakdown at the best of your ability, thank you!
Gotta admit I was curious to see how this was going to turn out...really, REALLY glad you were able to appreciate my favorite band of all time, even without having vocals to listen to! As I'm sure someone has already told you, this song is found in the middle of one of the greatest concept albums of ALL TIME, and it serves as a bridge between two excellent songs that actually HAVE vocals.
If you would like a taste of DT with vocals, but only a small taste, I'd recommend "Wait For Sleep"...it's a very short song, but very beautiful. Dream Theater is progressive metal music, and as such, many of their songs tend to be rather long (to some people). I would personally recommend one of their epic masterpieces, such as "The Count of Tuscany" (my personal favorite), "Octavarium," "Illumination Theory", or "A Change of Seasons." Whatever you choose to listen to next, please know that their musicianship is always at God Level...they are the absolute best at what they do.
Here's an outside the box thought...perhaps you might do another joint reaction with Chase? I believe he has yet to discover this band, and it would be fun to watch BOTH of your minds get blown simultaneously!

I was just coming down to the comments section to ask Julia to do more DT as I'm a huge fan, and came across this absolute gemstone - I genuinely think you managed to nail everything I wanted to say perfectly. Like EVERYTHING you said I completely agree with (and yes The Count of Tuscany is their best song and no I don't care if people think it's A Change of Seasons or Octavarium) and hope Julia takes this into account because more DT, especially along the lines mentioned above and extra especially with Chase reacting too, would be amazing!!!

You could start with "Illumination Theory", or "Breaking All Illusions", both Live at the Boston Opera, or you could react to "The Count of Tuscany"... all of them are master pieces (and there's singing!!). For a longer exposure to this fabulous band... the whole album "Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes From a Memory" is an awesome concept album, or "Octavarium" which, for me, is their best song until today... but anything you choose from them is good material. These guys are one of the few bands remaining where everyone involved is a virtuoso in his specialty...

All of the above are great suggestions, though I'd recommend building up to "Octavarium". Octavarium is arguably their best track ever as @Joan Vilariño said, but it's incredibly dense. You could also try "Pull Me Under" if you want their one mass-market hit (it's still a 7-ish minute Dream Theater epic, but it got massive radio and MTV play back when it came out).
Instrumedledy is a fantastic look at their musicality.

A critic who reviewed the studio album this came from said the band had packed so much material into it that you could listen to it a hundred times and still find new things every time.
Wish more people would take the time and appreciate the music that DT has provided us over a span of 3 decades.
Unfortunately they are just too much for a casual listener. I was introduced to Dream Theater by a musician and have found most people who know them, are musicians.

You should check out Rush, Dream Theater's main influence and one of the most amazing and versatile bands ever

For songs with vocals I highly recommend the songs from the Twelve-Step Suite : The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root Of All Evil, Repentance and The Shattered Fortress. All five of them are absolute masterpieces !
John Myung is one of the greatest bassists of all time.
This was also MY first exposure to DT. I knew of them and I had heard James LaBrie's voice in Ayreon, but I had no idea. My Lord! This was extraordinary!

One of my favorite reactors checking out one of my favorite bands!! I gave it a thumbs up before I even watched it! :) You will never hear a band playing this tight while playing such intricate and difficult rhythms and time signatures. Otherworldly. I strongly encourage you to listen to the entire album, which is one long story concept, even if you don't do a reaction to it. Utterly mind-blowing. Great reaction as always, Julia!

Agreed! It was one of my first pieces, and although it hasn't stuck with me as strongly as Panic Attack, which was my very first DT track, the chorus is still in my head to this day. Not that you'll find me complaining lmao

For DT with vocals, I would chose something from old times, like Metropolis pt 1, Strange Deja Vu or The Spirit Carries On.
Oh, also, they covered "Stargazer" from Rainbow (and Ronnie James Dio) - oops, wrong reactor XD @The Charismatic Voice
"The Spirit Carries On" is a pick I'd very much agree with. James has a gift for expressing warmth and empathy, and as a result he's an exceptional ballad singer.

Julia! Welcome to one of my favorite bands in the history of EVER!! I thoroughly enjoyed your facial expressions throughout this video, because that is EXACTLY how I felt the first time I experienced these insanely talented musicians. Oh, and congratulations: What the Actual Heck is indeed the correct time signature of this piece! 😁 I encourage you to check out the album that this is from, "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory," which is arguably their best album, and which is one long story. Great reaction! Was surprised to see this one, but was happy to see that you 'got' it. I've been buying their albums since 1992, love those guys. I miss Portnoy, but glad they're still around.
Fun fact: When Mike Portnoy (Original Drummer) left the band, Dream Theatre had to hold auditions with the TOP/BEST drummers in the world to see who could play their songs & also be able to create masterpieces.
They filmed it all & you can see it on UA-cam.
And in the end the Boston and Berklee School of Music connection stayed in tact..Mike being from the area, former drummer of Boston based band Extreme and a Percussion teacher at Berklee.
So DT has been plying this for years and have it perfected. I can't help but wonder what went through the orchestra musicians minds the first time they saw the craziness! Hats off to the conductor who was able to keep up and made the orchestra blend perfectly with DT!
Not worse than Stravinski, for example. Still a bit of a challenge, but this sort of thing is easier with sheet music to read.
I truly loved this reaction. I played this song as a drummer live in a drum festival when I was 16 and got lost in ONE LITTLE PART. I thought it was over, but the melodic composition is so strong that I just moved with the melody and everything went just awesome. Felt guilty the first second after finishing, but the second second was all applause and my mind went like "I just play The Dance of the Eternity... live... and I did it well". Coolest week of that year.

Oh my god, kudos to whoever it is that convinced you to watch this 🥳🥳🥳. Some channels (I think even Chase's) do not react to Dream Theater because I think they can be annoying with copyright, but in my opinion, they are totally worth it!
Amazing.. I am so glad to see so many 'reaction' videos out these days, and so many are discovering Dream Theater for the first time.. I've seen them over 10 times, met them.. listen to more.. So, you know.. THIS song is the most complex song they've done.. when they auditioned Mike Mangini, this is the song he had to prove he could handle in order to join the band..

You should go back to their beginnings… I highly recommend “Another Day”. It’s a very relaxing and uplifting song. Then “Pull Me Under” is the song that hooked me and made me a fan! Dance of Eternity is almost like the intro for the next song on the album. I HIGHLY recommend listening to the whole album from start to finish.
Me too! Technically the album is 1 song, so it should be listened that way and this 'track' is only a piece of the song.

Dream Theater was my introduction to prog metal, and what an intro!
As songs with actual lyrics in it, there are a lot of pearls in there.
For me, I have soft spots for Panic Attack, Constant Motion and Dark Eternal Night.

Wow! I just mentioned a couple of days ago in her community post that Dream Theater is one of the three metal bands that influenced my metal journey the most and lo and behold she'll be reacting to it for the first time tomorrow!! Btw, I'm really glad you enjoyed it despite being an accident 😉 I happen to be one of those people who is not a huge fan of James LaBrie's vocals (specially live) but he has many fans so I guess you'll have to judge by yourself in the future.
The music is so good in spite of LaBrie, IMO
Just make sure to check out his performances from before his vocal cords got messed up.
It's impressive that he ever managed to sing again after but his voice is definitely noticeably different live after that.

Honestly there are so many excellent choices from Ayreon, I want someone to react to like...the whole album? And not just one album, like almost all of them? That's what I want.
Dream Theater has been a childhood favorite for years, their music will take you on a crazy journey. My uncle introduced me to them, being able to cover the solos nearly flawlessly on his own guitar and rig, made me even more jealous knowing he'd met the band and even had Petrucci sign his guitar
YES! More of this sort of thing! It's a bit long, but Octavarium would be a rad one to have a listen to. Root of all evil is probably a bit more realistic haha
I've heard DT is a musicians band. Every reaction video I've watched with DT and a music professional has had pretty much the same reaction. Appreciation and awe.

You really should do "A Change of Seasons - The Crimson Sunrise / Innocence / Carpe Diem / The Darkest of Winters / Another World / The Inevitable Summer / The Crimson Sunset · Dream Theater" This is all in one tune, is very long, but you will have no regrets.

I was AT this concert in Boston! From the 6th row after the orchestra pit, there were times that the camera boom swung so low that it nearly hit my head! Dream Theater is my favorite band and their songs WITH James LaBrie's vocals will equally amaze you!

Kudos to you, Julia. Taking on an instrumental piece demonstrates that your ability to analyze isn't limited to vocal performances. Seeing your appreciation and enjoyment of the composition and musicality was a treat. You should DEFINITELY check out the band Rush. I recommend the tune YYZ, but honestly there are plenty of other great pieces to choose from. YYZ is also an instrumental. Regarding vocals, same deal... so many great ones. I recommend starting with Marathon and Manhattan Project.
For some reason it's very satisfying to watch these videos of musicians enjoying the same stuff I enjoy. I don't know anything about music but I've always loved DT. Especially the drummer. It's like he's a part of the melody in their songs instead of just the beat.

I really enjoy listening to professional singers like Julia and The Charismatic Voice react to instrumental-only/heavy instrumental songs. Their reactions are like they are hearing guitars/drums for the first time. Their eyes light up and they're always impressed. Plus, as an instrumentalist, it's nice to see their reaction from a Jazz/Opera point of view, as opposed to a Metal vocalists pov.
This is from Metropolis pt. 2, the album in its entirety is played on Live Scenes from New York in 2001. The entire band, including the vocalist (who very much has good and bad days at this point) is on fire. It's a concept album so hard to pick just one thing, but think you'd enjoy it! Change of Seasons, Voices + The Silent Man, and Learning to Live from the same live set are also great choices to react to with vocals.
Live Scenes from NY is the best of both worlds really. You get the concept album in full and you also get the vocalists (since LaBrie isn't the only one) in a proper live setting. Well worth anyone's time to explore

I've enjoyed the way you talk about what you're discover, or just use the screen to explain us what's in your mind over that period of time. i.e: When you wrote that your brain couldn't follow what's next was superb.
You should listen to "Metropolis pt. 2, Scenes from a Memory" from the beginning. It is an excellent album, from that time they started to make Conceptual albums, almost without pauses.
Despite all the changes the album has, also it has an incredible relaxing effect, so listen it when you lay on your bed and you probably are going to be relaxed and you'll fall asleep. Personally, I had to listen twice because I just felt the beginning to the second or third song, a cut in the middle, and the final effect at the end the first time I listened and then I said to myself "what the...?" I played again to rediscover that album, that time consciously.

This style of rock or metal is called progressive, Drean teather is one of the greatest exponents in this style of music, they mix many styles, sounds etc. They are simply impressive.

Haven't found more DT songs in your channel! As a fan, I would suggest: take the time (high pitch, great instrumentals), strange dejavu (he sings a male and a female characters), Octavarium (epic in every sense), wither (short one, melodic - you could even compare with instrumental version, and analyse how the vocals add up to the piece)
