It was so brutal after John and Tosin to just say "Now Devin you play something" lol. I would've freakin died on the spot, but Devin owned it. It's funny how much he sounds like Vai though.
I think they said it so nonchalantly for the soul reason that Devins mastery and ever exploration of the instrument, led them to believe that anything he would play would be awesome. And they knew it. And they were not wrong.
Dear Rick, i believe Devin deserves his own interview, what makes this song great. I am a jazz musician, and also thanks to you, my head is full with theory. I suppose the question then becomes 'what makes an amazing guitar player?' The answer seems to be, how well you relate to them and their music. (At least for me) I think Devin is in a class of his own.
A lot of factors define a amazing guitar player. Sometimes you were born to play intricate stuff that pleases a certain crowd( and the challenge is to adequate it to most amount of those listeners) and sometimes you were born to play it simple and the challenge its to relate the crowd to a particular set of feelings.
I saw them in concert together on their tour a couple years ago and let me tell you: Devin stole the show. It was my first time hearing him, and he was amazing. Started out playing “Lightworker” and was a bit confused on where he would go from there, but then threw in “Kingdom” and “Bad Devil”. Finally, what sealed the deal for me, is when he absolutely crushed it on “The Spirit Carries On”, while LaBrie was struggling. Insane musician, vocalist, and artist!
I love that these musicians continue to baffle, teach, and inspire each other simply sharing their personal guitar journey. Beautiful… thanks for inviting us in, Rick! 💜

I love how profesional musicians have such a good vibe each other and support each other, they really appreciate what other musicians can offer.
Bloody hell!!! So much talent. Going back to pentatonics 😢
I discovered Devin Townsend when he was singing with Steve vai and you can certainly hear some Steve vai influence in his playing, very unique and beautiful
Devin played and I immediately felt myself ascending into outer space
they are the guitarists who are at the peak of their skill in playing the guitar but are still amazed by the skill of their fellow good guitarists. They are already good but still want to learn,. their love for playing the guitar is intense.
Never heard of this DEVIN GUY ...BUT WHATTTTT IN THE WORLD WAS THAT😮😮😮😮😮😮AMAZING PLAYING MAN.
Man, you need to hear “Failure”. Get back here and tell me what you think about it!
@4rtorius 😍😍😍😍😍oooooh and the singing the solo the falsetto is amazing... wwooow.... Added to my playlist
Wait til you hear him sing. Or compose. First album I bought was Ocean Machine. Mind is still blown.
@@PickettMusic He has such an amazing way of writing... That's him singing 🤯🤯🤯
@@PickettMusic once you can sing and play you're already a better guitarist than the best guitarist
Devins piece was by far, the most listenable. Man I love that atmospheric soloing.
Yea, devin never thinks about technicality when he's writing. He writes solely for the visceral feeling.
John and Tobin were demonstrating specific techniques. Had either of them attempted instead to do what Devin did, they could have certainly generated something just as emotionally as engaging. But Devin is a very smart man. He knows that he isn't anywhere near their technical level of skill, so he didn't even risk providing some point of comparison. He just did he is a master at doing.
Check out “Away” by The Devin Townsend Band. Beautiful instrumental song off of Accelerated Evolution
All three of them are just geniuses in their own way, such an amazing video
You can tell these legends are so grounded because they are not connected to mainstream commercial music in anyway. All of them sounded amazing.
Devin is so great of a singer, people sometimes overlook his killer guitar chops.
Let me just say as just a guy who loves guitar, this type of gathering is like a dream round table of guitarists, this is fascinating
I saw Tosin's band Reflux open for Devin's band Strapping Young Lad in like 2004. It was probably the best show I've ever been to!
John: wears all black
Tosin: wears all black
Devin: tropical vacation
I've listened to AAL since Soraya and they absolutely blew me away. A decade and a half later, I'm still amazed by his process and glad that the internet exists to share him with the world
Each a master in their own domain. Blessed are the ears!
These guys are truly Renaissance men. Having Javier in here would have been great as well, his classical style is insane.
Probably the quickest 11 minutes and 6 seconds on the Tube! Good stuff!
Really talented people in the same room. Amazing.
I was lucky enough to see them on tour together when they came through in July. All three are phenomenal musicians 👌
I feel like these guys are evolving guitar playing in real time before our eyes.
The musical power in this video is what's powering every single electrical device in that room
Not only are these guys so talented and highly intelligent but they are also great guys!
smiled when I saw devin played a allan holdsworth signature. been wanting that guitar for a while, hope it'll still be available when I got the money for it
Can we see the full session. Hearing three masters cross reference like this is inspirational!
It’s up on the main channel boss
@@wolfpartyyy Cheers! I missed it while I was in a tent in a field building a guitar.
Devin sound in this video looks like with the Satriani expression, but in the same way tha's similiar, sound completly different! Really outstanding!!!
Townsend makes music that makes me wanna cry
Devin's sound is so unique ❤
Rick: Devin play something.
Devin: Blows everyone else away!
Nahhh not rly. Others weren’t even performing they were just showing techniques. Devin just played a solo.
