I feel ya...Scenes is one of my favorite records of all time. It has the most tame IIC+ tone ever, and its so warm and woody. I just got tickets 13 days ago to go see em in Syracuse NY on November 10th. I really dig the new record, its fresh and easy...but when I heard they are playing Scenes in its entirety, I jumped in head first. This will be the 14th time for me at a DT show, and was the most expensive concert yet at $185US for a pair of 8th or 9th row tix...slightly stage left OF COURSE, lol. Major props to these old timers, they just anounced yet another leg to this epic tour down in Chile and Brazil, a couple weeks after they announced this 2nd US leg. Yep, met him once and really is a very friendly and humble guy. Met Portnoy twice and he's the same. My friend met Rudess at the weed store before the show earlier this year (in Denver) and he said Rudess was super chill. I wonder why...
Mike P and John M lived together in Long Beach in the late 80's. Mike would throw crazy parties. Myung would stay in his room amp cranked and practice for hours.
Ironically, I ran into JP at the airport in Amsterdam the day after watching their show in London. I had to look twice but it was really him, late at night, standing there with perhaps his guitar tech who was rather scary looking. Initially I kept walking because I didn't know what to say, and by the time I almost reached the last gate I gathered my guts to talk to him. He was extremely nice, I was having a slight melt-down trying to talk to him because he's been my favorite guitarist and influences as a guitarist since I was a kid. Because I didn't want to be disrespectful I didn't whip out my phone and ask for a photograph, however, I kind of regret it in some way. It was just such a crazy moment in my life.
His story at the begging is word for word my experience with the guitar. Got one at 8, went to lessons, played songs no one wanted to learn, put the guitar down until I was 13 and learned and practiced what I wanted to for about 6 hours a day lol

2 things- 1) John is such a chill, laid back interview. Very gracious and forthcoming. I love it. Thank you for your excellent attitude, sir. 2) Kevin Moore era dream theater was my absolute favorite version of the band, and Chroma Key/OSI has grown to become one of my favorite acts. But to hear John’s side of Kevin’s departure was heartbreaking. Come on Kevin. You don’t have to be in the band, but give your old buddy a call and reconnect. Enough time has passed. You can see he still misses you and thinks about you.
James LaBrie has confirmed that Kevin and him are keeping in touch via text in 2019. So I'd like to know if the band has heard his new patreon demos, or any of his original music at all!
The Chicken Nugget of Fate I remember the exact post where it was (Kevin’s Facebook, where he linked to one of his demos - think it was “Strong” - on Patreon in 2017), but the comment has disappeared. anyway, it didn’t say anything too juicy, just something like “can’t wait to check these out Kev, miss you old friend”. so you can choose whether or not to believe me!
5:54 If you reverse something twice, you're back where you started, except that now the attack of the notes is at the end of the notes instead of at the beginning, which is definitely what's going on in that solo.
A scene in Lynch's "Twin Peaks: Fire walk with me" was filmed backwards, but the actors spoke their lines backwards phonetically so that you can understand what they are saying even though the film is reversed.
I was shocked that he didn’t remember this. It’s definitely what happened. It’s the same thing George Harrison did in I’m Only Sleeping. I know Portnoy is a big Beatles fan, so I’ll bet it was his idea and Petrucci just forgot. To be fair, it was nearly 20 years ago.
Recently started playing guitar and I can’t believe it took me until now to start listening to Dream Theater; gladI found it nonetheless. Truly a masterpiece through and through.
Dude, I think "Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction?" is one of the best ideas I've seen in years... not to mention how good you are as an interviewer, the idea is AWESOME!
I'd love to hear him talk about the song As I Am. I heard the solo and lyrics were inspired as an FU to another guitarist trying to give him pointers about how he should be playing during the course of a shared tour.
The part of the interview that bothered me deeply was that about Kevin Moore. To me that was very sad. I know a lot of long time Dream Theater fans that, like me, believe Moore truly contributed something special that was very much lost after his departure. I love all Dream Theater albums, but like many people Images and Words and Awake are still 1 and 2 as favorites. The number one thing I think Moore took with him was the ambient keyboards. The more atmospheric sounds like Surrounded and Lifting Shadows Off a Dream. Space Dye Vest, a Moore song, remains one of their most unique compositions to this day. So it is obvious what Moore meant to the band, but to just not stay in touch with John is heartbreaking...or at least in my way of thinking of life and friends. Sad really.
I think the metropolis part 2 through black clouds is the best Era. I don't disagree that Kevin provided some great keyboard work but I don't think dream theater lost a great deal of their identity with rudess. Much of the dt sound was elevated thanks to Jordan and he did also do some great ambient work especially in mp2, train of thought and six degrees. It was perhaps less dominant but still there. In addition we got some marvelous solo work and riffing.
@@fVNzO Jordan is likely a much better pianist, but I liked Kevin's style more. I got tired of Jordan's grandiose piano riffs in songs. It was a detraction. Still, I swear I appreciate both, however, Kevin's style was so much better to me.

No one asked Myung about it so he may or may not be.

I think that if I ever get the chance to meet him IRL I'd instantly turn into a puddle of blob. Dream Theater's music guided me, both in hard times and good times: it's the cause of me meeting my soulmate, it has been there when my grandad died, it has been there when I was growing up, it cured (and continues to cure) my depression, it made every good moment better. Dream Theater's music has been, ultimately, the light that guided me in darkness and the catalyst that made the sun look brighter, and it continues to do since Christmas of 1999, when my grandad gave me Metropolis Part 2 as a gift. That's why I couldn't meet John Petrucci or any of them: how can you say "thank you" in a way that encompass all the things above?
One day after this video released, wikipedia is already corrected, at least on the 6 hours a day thing which is the only thing I checked on. Well done, internet.
