Mine was a main plot mission(can't remember which one) i had the best of all my classes. Every thing went well until i entered a room. 4 mechs with 2 drones each. Half a dozen beserkers and muttons. 5 cyber disk. Within one single turn my entire team save for my sniper was killed. My sniper was on higher ground and managed to somehow oneshot a mech. The beserkers rushed me. Forcing me to have her fall back
So i had her fall back. The berserkers lost her. I the. Proceeded to spend almost 2 hours moving like a snail at the edge of the fog of war . after nearly 3 hours i managed to kill all of them
That's because the cannon story is the impossible ironman mode. And NO, it is NOT easy. You can even see the stats and only a few actualy beat the game on such difficulty.
My favorite story from my XCOM 1 playthrough was when I was going through an enemy base and all of my soldiers were being wrecked by chrisalids. It was down to my last sniper whom had 3 chrisalids next to him in point blank range and two within one turn attacking distance. This sniper had just earned the perk which grants another action when you kill something, and this lone sniper in the face of seeing all of his comrades die, and in the face of these giant spider creatures encroaching upon him, lifted his rifle and mowed them down, one by one until the only living thing left was him. He proceeded to push through, clear the base, and be the lone survivor of the mission. I will always remember you 'Zero'. You were the hero.
Picking up weapon is actually explained, the Aliens' weapons self destruct when the operator dies. However if you capture the Alien instead of killing them you get their weapons. I actually like that decision since otherwise you are going to have way too much plasma weapons that you would never have to build any other than for sniper and heavy. However I entirely agree on the extra equipment slots.

We only really see them for the biggest games now but 2010-2015 was a good year for AJS reviews with Rome 2, Bioshock, Civ V, Destiny, Witcher 3, No mans sky, GTA V, ESO, EA battlefront, Aliens colonial marines, Destiny 2, Skyrim... that's not even half of them but so many entertaining videos worth revisiting if it's been long enough since you last watched if you ever did.

Easily one of the best games in a decade. Easily, especially considering Enemy Within. Polished as FUCK, production and replay value are out of this world. Music and ambience sounds 9/10. It can be brutally hard and unforgiving, but it is addictive as hell. Simply a stunning title.

Any higher diffuculties just add 5. Impossible is assrape. Ironman impossible is assrape after you done dropped the soap and everyone in the shower is fucking every one of your holes. Long war is attrition; _be prepared._

Try The Long War mod for X Com. Awesome. Freaking awesome. So awesome X Coms creator said the normal X COm is just a 20 hour tutorial for Long War, and it probably influenced a lot of stuff in the new X Com 2, including mod availability

I had never played XCOM prior to this game, and I can tell you this game is absolutely fantastic. This game is so deep and engaging and I say that as someone who isn't often interested in turn-based squad-based strategy games. I really recommend it. 46/10 would let earth be glassed again
One thing that always bugged me when starting a new game is that the soldiers.....the fucking soldiers.... Once, I had a heavy (who was ranked a major) shoot at a Chryssalid that was out in the open THREE FEET IN FRONT OF HIM and miss. How do you miss a giant insect at Point-blank range when it's just sitting there in the open?
they ARE the best of the best,by world standards.But are untested against threats from outside the world,hence sometimes perform oddly in combat.With that said,compared to the"outgunned"conventional military of the world, XCOM's specialized units(They were mentioned as Special Forces soldier in the trailer,who have probably underwent the best training by conventional standards),even the "rookies"have a better chance of actually engaging the aliens effectively as opposed to conventional military forces.BUT i do get PISSED OF when my guy/girl misses on a 99% pointblank range or a shot at a target on the open.
Only Impossible is hard due to the extra HP early game, but Classic are quite easy if making proper tactical decisions. I think only first month of Impossible Ironman is off balance in this game, since there is a lot of luck involved on I/I that no sound tactical decision can make up for, and of course once you get to 2nd or 3rd month on I/I, the difficulty takes a plunge.
I was a heavy, my brother was a sniper, and my best friend was a support. I managed to beat the game with all three of us alive. Its still my greatest achievement as a gamer.

I hate that, and its not like I'm shooting through cardboard boxes, nooo, I'm shooting with rifles through thick alien spaceship walls, like 5 meters thick, with angulation and all, why didn't they fix this?

And that's why we research armor and lasers first, and everything else second. One of my early games, I got Titan Armor early on by getting an insane amount of scientists, and then I got laser guns. Nothing could touch me. I had a heavy who downed 3 Cyberdiscs alone, and an assault who thrashed a Mechtoid in one turn.
Ok so I just made a long ass comment below replying to someone, but this game is just so good and I want people to have a chance to enjoy it in Classic at least so I'll just give a few pointers that might help you out. These are for Classic difficulty: 1. The fastest way to LOSE at XCOM:EU and EW is to follow the stupid fucking tutorial. You should never, EVER, move your soldier carelessly to the front without making sure that you are able to cover that soldier. i.e: NEVER RUSH a soldier to a position where it can no longer move when there is no other soldier with available turns. Dashing is not bad, but it is an incredibly risky movement because it can leave your soldier(s) immediately flanked and fucked. It's best to constantly be in Overwatch. Use at your own discretion. 2. The first mission can be replayed regardless of Ironman setting (just dont enable tutorial...) So ALWAYS make sure you complete the first mission with all soldiers alive. Preferably make a kill with all of them so they all earn a rank. You will most probably get all 4 classes after that. 3. CHECK your base layout as soon as you are able! You are going to want free space in the two rows where you first satellite uplink is already built. Why? Because this will maximize the output of all of them for you to have enough to cover for the entire world. If there is a steam in ANY space of those two rows then you are fucked. Restart and repeat. 4. PRIORITY SCHMIORITY! Ignore everything that has to do with the main storyline like the Alien Capture and containment. FUCK IT! Your efforts for the first 2 1/2 months will be to get as many engineers as you can. Don't save on anything! spend your entire budget! Sell bodies! materials! Don't be afraid to be without cash! Spend it on getting engineers by doing missions AND by building workshops! Which will require power, so build build build! Of course you will be juggling with world panic and such, so you won't be able to get engineers during every mission. But if you play your cards right and carefully then by the end of the third month you will have 90% of the world with satellite coverage! :D 5, Unless you start in South America, my recommendation for first research is always Weapon Fragments to get Beam Weapons quickly! This is because the first terror mission arrives around the end of the second or halfway the third month and it can be a real pain in the ass if you are not doing increased damage by this point. You could also go for the armor first but Cryssalids will still rape you... soooo... yeah. In SouthAmerica it's best to go for Xenobiology, since autopsies and interrogation grant research bonuses that can be exploited on the go if played right. Lastly 6. Survive your missions! Never let yourself be flanked or near flanked. Cover always for your soldiers and never leave one far behind or move one far up front. Be mindful and always have a fall-back line if your find yourself in a difficult position (one time I had to face against 4 Sectopods and 8 drones AT ONCE) If you lose a mission it will be hard to recover, specially if you lose high ranking soldiers! So if that happens consider that you may lost a country or two. Have fun people.

me and a bunch of other buddies watched another friend play this game and all of the characters after each other and other friends. RIP Black Justice, 10 kills and 2 missions in. We always saved throughout the game so that if any of the characters died we would go back to that save point. My friend Lindsey was an exception though. He would always get the shittiest armor and weapon and be sent out front. His death mattered not. Surprisingly though, we only made it to Lindsey the 5th by the end of the game.
If you liked playing this game, try the EXELLENT mod for it called Xcom The Long War. As the name implies, this is a looooong fight. Starting squadsize is 6, you got tonnes of gear options (smoke grenade, flashbang, laser sight, anti-pers grenade, medkit, battle scanner, ceramic plate (nanofiber-vest equivalent), extra ammo mags and alien trophy (immunity to panic) are all avaleble in infinite supply right at the start. Weapon types now include pistols, machine pistols, sawed of shotgun, SMGs, carbines, assault rifels, battle rifles, sniper rifles, marksnam rifles (lighter sniper rifle that can shoot after moving), shotguns, LMGs (have 9 ammo and can't shoot after a move), SAWs (Lighter LMG), and upgradable rocket launchers. Loads of more research projects, tonnes of more foundry projects, officer promotion system, completely re-worked psionic ability system, completely reworked class system (now 8 classes and they have 3 skills to pick from on every level exept the first), 8 MEC-trooper classes (1 for each base class), massively improved SHIVS (lot motre versatile nbow and can equip gear). The airgame is VASTLY improved, and significantly harder. Even the first scout can seriously dent your aircraft (and you can just forget about engaging large UFOs untill WAY leter). Now every alien mission is an UFO flying to somewhear and doing it's thing, the airgame has now become "fuck up the alines plans" rather then only being for defending your sattelites (they still hunt your sats though). You need sats to detect UFOs on missions, but you will ofc always see their attacks on humans once it has begun (though you CAN shoot down the UFO or force it to retrteat and stop the terror attack that way). Alines now do resourse collection and research of their own. Stats on enemies are no longer static. This means that it is possible to encounter 12 hp squadsight thin men, berserkers with jumpy legs gene mods, mectoids with 30+ hp, 5 damage reduction and self repair, floaters with covering fire etc. There is a LOT more they changed (like the base defence), to much for me to write here. go check out the Long War on ufopedia yourselves :)
Also, I forgot to mention that weapons now come in 5 tiers. Basic ballistics, beam lasers, gauss (mini,railgun tech with alloy ammo), pulse lasers and plasma. Also, every plasma weapon now requires a captured aline weapon to construct (plus 1 or more alien weapons to do the research). You can also get council requests for living aline captives after you have interrogated that spiecis (and interrogations now require the autopsy to be made first, but also gives more)
My laptop is not a gaming laptop so even the normal version of XCOM (best game ever) is slow and awkward for me. I'd love to download the mod but I'm not sure my laptop can handle it.

I lost argentina and Brazil a day ago and I don't what the consequences are for it and how to prevent me from losing more countries because I usually can only choose one countries out of three to save.

this is my all-time favourite review by Joe, not just because of the top-notch production like costumes and hilarious scenarios present in the review, but also this is one of the few times where joe outright motivated me to buy the game and subsequently to introduced me to what is now my favorite gaming franchise in the strategy genre.
Bought this game from the Steam summer sale for like 5€ if i remember correctly, probably the best purchase i have ever done. Played the game like 2 days at row almost. Started with normal mode, was too difficult. So restarted on easy mode, and it was still difficult, in the beginning, later it got better. I totaly underestimated the Overwatch ability...didn't use it in the beginning at all lol. Oh, and one more thing, i hate those "¤%#%#¤ spider aliens! :D
Had such a good time with this one. Ported over a habit from original XCOM: I liked to give my guys callsigns based on stuff they did or things I said to myself while playing. Rookie alone in a room with two aliens, "Uh-oh, I'm behind the eight ball now...." but he lived, and Eight-Ball joined Gargoyle, Bozo, Law-Dog, Knock-Knock, Ruckus, Bigfoot, Shakespeare, and a long cast of others. Losing a soldier had a surprising amount of meaning, beyond having to replace an experienced operative.
can someone explain to me the benefit of bringing an assault class on any of your missions? i always found that having 2 heavys, 3 snipers and 1 support always got me through pretty much every mission (terror missions i went 5 snipers and 1 heavy)
I usually have at least two assaults a mission with lightning reflexes and the crit bonus to Hit and Run. Makes flanking and eliminating enemies a breeze. Plus they can easily surpass or equal in health to an MEC so if they do get in a bad situation they have a good survival chance.

They should make a second one about after the aliens invade, and we have the technology to go into space, but they are about to invade again. Kind of like Ender's Game.

Impossible, ironman Multiple times. It's brutal in the beginning, But when you research plasma weapons it becomes a slight challenge only. That is... If you actually make it to that point.
i cried when miss strapon died cause she used to hand out the D so well she was my first captain and will forever be on my hall of fame she ones fought a war so bad with 2 rooks and a mid level warrior against a big barrage of aliens the rooks died quick and painless the warrior got injured panicked died in the 9 turn 4 after the rooks miss strapon was all alone on a important mission that i needed or else suffer big losses like my 3rd best country and the high level soldier i got with it against a army she stayed shot flanked for 20 turns she fought until she got lucky and the alien decided to snuggle next to each other then the grenade of god was unleashed and it got a triple kill she knew it was all sunshine from there as she reloaded her gun equipped run and gun and dashed towards the enemy she finally won . . .the memories THE FEELS are real oh so real she will be missed rip miss strapon (19-04-13/02-05-13) you served your planet well just felt like sharing my war story of miss strapon
This is one of those games where is has a massive mountain of problems, but you notice none of them because it's so beyond awesome that it over-shadows it.
To this day I will never understand why 2K didn't do a Switch port of this instead of XCOM2. Even on my bloody steam deck, Enemy Unknown worked 100% with auto detecting controller inputs...unlike XCOM2. Don't get me wrong, I FREAKING LOVED 2, but FFS it still had performance issues on various PC set ups, and the Switch's hardware should have been something to stay far away from. They could have ported the title that was very console friendly to begin with. Also a much better introduction for anybody remotely new to XCOM.
Joe you should definetly give xenonauts a look. It's really good, keeping the complexity of the original while improving what needed improvement. Its even got good airiel warfare, something none of the xcom games pulled of.
Xenonauts is brilliant in its own way. I'd still put XCOM: Enemy Unknown (and its expansion) a notch above Xenonauts, but it is a very good game nontheless.

Joe You really cared about your squads.... And actually watching this vid was my first one i've ever watched. It's given me some tips to do when i play my own XCOM playthroughs.
Still one of my favorite games of the past 5 years. The whol character development thing is too true and one of the great things about this game. I almost dropped a tear/went into revenge mode when one of 2 favorite/elite soldiers went down in the enemy within base defense mission (which caught me completely off guard when I played it the first time, but that means the game was doing its job, plus its an amazing mission!). She went down when she got outnumbered by cyberdiscs, and on top of that, that mission doesn't necessarily give your soldiers their full loadouts. The fact the game can make all sorts of different personal stories like this is one of the reasons it is great :)

I started playing this I would say this game is easy but I'm playing on normal. But other than that it's really fun. Glad I listened to joe about this. Okay so I played this for while and there's some things I hate A. You can't pick your class. My favorite guy becomes the one thing I dont want him to be and it just breaks the bond I rename him change everything about him and just forget he exists. B. Why the hell are aliens strong in the starter missions. I know it's difficult but why should I lose two rookies immediately when the aliens are spotted and kill them with 6 hit critical. It's annoying.
The Shiny Golden Emperor that would basically mean your not suppose to even try and play. But seriously I'd understand if I lost them after a couple turns but after immediately seeing aliens and losing two rookies doesn't makes sense
+RebornBySin Un-armoured rookies with the starting pew-pew guns are meant to be complete crap. I guess it helps with the "bonding" and it adds more incentive to upgrade armour, guns etc.
Joe, you are so right! Having a co-op campaign mode would be kick-ass! Like, your allies could be stationed at different countries, you could trade tech and soldiers, you could have multiple Skyrangers and do more missions or you could combine your power for one mission. There are so many possibilities!
Impossible is a great challenge in the first half, but it gets a little easy once you have six colonels and plasma weapons. The key is thinking more flexibly in your tactics. Draw them out, send soldiers far to the sides to flank them without getting shot, actually use the fog to your advantage, and use grenades to create flanking positions, think outside the box. If you're not in a position where flanking is viable, move the battle somewhere else.
I'm strongly willing to bet I know a lot more geography than you do. I'm also guaranteeing that even people outside of America know very little geography. Lastly, I find it extremely funny that you would waste your time attacking America. I promise you most Americans don't care about any countries outside the U.S. regardless if we know of them. Be as jealous as you want that we can do whatever we want, but really we don't care about your crying.

We only really see them for the biggest games now but 2010-2015 was a good year for AJS reviews with Rome 2, Bioshock, Civ V, Destiny, Witcher 3, No mans sky, GTA V, ESO, EA battlefront, Aliens colonial marines, Destiny 2, Skyrim... that's not even half of them but so many entertaining videos worth revisiting if it's been long enough since you last watched if you ever did.

Easily one of the best games in a decade. Easily, especially considering Enemy Within. Polished as FUCK, production and replay value are out of this world. Music and ambience sounds 9/10. It can be brutally hard and unforgiving, but it is addictive as hell. Simply a stunning title.
The vanilla game is a good tutorial for Long War.

Thank of the hardest difficulty of xcom...multiply it by 10. This is the *easiest* difficulty on long war. Any higher diffuculties just add 5. Impossible is assrape. Ironman impossible is assrape after you done dropped the soap and everyone in the shower is fucking every one of your holes.

Try The Long War mod for X Com. Awesome. Freaking awesome. So awesome X Coms creator said the normal X COm is just a 20 hour tutorial for Long War, and it probably influenced a lot of stuff in the new X Com 2, including mod availability

I had never played XCOM prior to this game, and I can tell you this game is absolutely fantastic. This game is so deep and engaging and I say that as someone who isn't often interested in turn-based squad-based strategy games. I really recommend it. 46/10 would let earth be glassed again
One thing that always bugged me when starting a new game is that the soldiers.....the fucking soldiers.... they ARE the best of the best,by world standards.But are untested against threats from outside the world,hence sometimes perform oddly in combat.With that said,compared to the"outgunned"conventional military of the world, XCOM's specialized units(They were mentioned as Special Forces soldier in the trailer,who have probably underwent the best training by conventional standards),even the "rookies"have a better chance of actually engaging the aliens effectively as opposed to conventional military forces.BUT i do get PISSED OF when my guy/girl misses on a 99% pointblank range or a shot at a target on the open.

Classic is the best compromise, not easy, but not too difficult.
Funny thing is that I choose classic ironman difficulty as my first playthrough XD..

Only Impossible is hard due to the extra HP early game, but Classic are quite easy if making proper tactical decisions.
I think only first month of Impossible Ironman is off balance in this game, since there is a lot of luck involved on I/I that no sound tactical decision can make up for, and of course once you get to 2nd or 3rd month on I/I, the difficulty takes a plunge.

And that's why we research armor and lasers first, and everything else second. One of my early games, I got Titan Armor early on by getting an insane amount of scientists, and then I got laser guns. Nothing could touch me. I had a heavy who downed 3 Cyberdiscs alone, and an assault who thrashed a Mechtoid in one turn.
Ok so I just made a long ass comment below replying to someone, but this game is just so good and I want people to have a chance to enjoy it in Classic at least so I'll just give a few pointers that might help you out.
These are for Classic difficulty:
1. The fastest way to LOSE at XCOM:EU and EW is to follow the stupid fucking tutorial. You should never, EVER, move your soldier carelessly to the front without making sure that you are able to cover that soldier. i.e: NEVER RUSH a soldier to a position where it can no longer move when there is no other soldier with available turns. Dashing is not bad, but it is an incredibly risky movement because it can leave your soldier(s) immediately flanked and fucked. It's best to constantly be in Overwatch. Use at your own discretion.
2. The first mission can be replayed regardless of Ironman setting (just dont enable tutorial...) So ALWAYS make sure you complete the first mission with all soldiers alive. Preferably make a kill with all of them so they all earn a rank. You will most probably get all 4 classes after that.
3. CHECK your base layout as soon as you are able! You are going to want free space in the two rows where you first satellite uplink is already built. Why? Because this will maximize the output of all of them for you to have enough to cover for the entire world. If there is a steam in ANY space of those two rows then you are fucked. Restart and repeat.
4. PRIORITY SCHMIORITY! Ignore everything that has to do with the main storyline like the Alien Capture and containment. FUCK IT! Your efforts for the first 2 1/2 months will be to get as many engineers as you can. Don't save on anything! spend your entire budget! Sell bodies! materials! Don't be afraid to be without cash! Spend it on getting engineers by doing missions AND by building workshops! Which will require power, so build build build! Of course you will be juggling with world panic and such, so you won't be able to get engineers during every mission. But if you play your cards right and carefully then by the end of the third month you will have 90% of the world with satellite coverage! :D
5, Unless you start in South America, my recommendation for first research is always Weapon Fragments to get Beam Weapons quickly! This is because the first terror mission arrives around the end of the second or halfway the third month and it can be a real pain in the ass if you are not doing increased damage by this point. You could also go for the armor first but Cryssalids will still rape you... soooo... yeah. In SouthAmerica it's best to go for Xenobiology, since autopsies and interrogation grant research bonuses that can be exploited on the go if played right.
Lastly
6. Survive your missions! Never let yourself be flanked or near flanked. Cover always for your soldiers and never leave one far behind or move one far up front. Be mindful and always have a fall-back line if your find yourself in a difficult position (one time I had to face against 4 Sectopods and 8 drones AT ONCE) If you lose a mission it will be hard to recover, specially if you lose high ranking soldiers! So if that happens consider that you may lost a country or two.

We always saved throughout the game so that if any of the characters died we would go back to that save point. My friend Lindsey was an exception though. He would always get the shittiest armor and weapon and be sent out front. His death mattered not. Surprisingly though, we only made it to Lindsey the 5th by the end of the game.

If you liked playing this game, try the EXELLENT mod for it called Xcom The Long War.
As the name implies, this is a looooong fight.
Starting squadsize is 6, you got tonnes of gear options (smoke grenade, flashbang, laser sight, anti-pers grenade, medkit, battle scanner, ceramic plate (nanofiber-vest equivalent), extra ammo mags and alien trophy (immunity to panic) are all avaleble in infinite supply right at the start.
Weapon types now include pistols, machine pistols, sawed of shotgun, SMGs, carbines, assault rifels, battle rifles, sniper rifles, marksnam rifles (lighter sniper rifle that can shoot after moving), shotguns, LMGs (have 9 ammo and can't shoot after a move), SAWs (Lighter LMG), and upgradable rocket launchers.
Loads of more research projects, tonnes of more foundry projects, officer promotion system, completely re-worked psionic ability system, completely reworked class system (now 8 classes and they have 3 skills to pick from on every level exept the first), 8 MEC-trooper classes (1 for each base class), massively improved SHIVS (lot motre versatile nbow and can equip gear).
The airgame is VASTLY improved, and significantly harder. Even the first scout can seriously dent your aircraft (and you can just forget about engaging large UFOs untill WAY leter).
Now every alien mission is an UFO flying to somewhear and doing it's thing, the airgame has now become "fuck up the alines plans" rather then only being for defending your sattelites (they still hunt your sats though).
You need sats to detect UFOs on missions, but you will ofc always see their attacks on humans once it has begun (though you CAN shoot down the UFO or force it to retrteat and stop the terror attack that way).
Alines now do resourse collection and research of their own. Stats on enemies are no longer static.
This means that it is possible to encounter 12 hp squadsight thin men, berserkers with jumpy legs gene mods, mectoids with 30+ hp, 5 damage reduction and self repair, floaters with covering fire etc.
There is a LOT more they changed (like the base defence), to much for me to write here. go check out the Long War on ufopedia yourselves :)
Also, I forgot to mention that weapons now come in 5 tiers.
Basic ballistics, beam lasers, gauss (mini,railgun tech with alloy ammo), pulse lasers and plasma.
Also, every plasma weapon now requires a captured aline weapon to construct (plus 1 or more alien weapons to do the research).
You can also get council requests for living aline captives after you have interrogated that spiecis (and interrogations now require the autopsy to be made first, but also gives more)
I cannot agree more. I just installed it and played a few missions. It is a joy to play (and to get your ass kicked) !
My laptop is not a gaming laptop so even the normal version of XCOM (best game ever) is slow and awkward for me. I'd love to download the mod but I'm not sure my laptop can handle it.
It isn't excellent, it is terrible. It was made by people who don't understand why the game was the way it was and had a really stupid vision.

I lost argentina and Brazil a day ago and I don't what the consequences are for it and how to prevent me from losing more countries because I usually can only choose one countries out of three to save.

this is my all-time favourite review by Joe, not just because of the top-notch production like costumes and hilarious scenarios present in the review, but also this is one of the few times where joe outright motivated me to buy the game and subsequently to introduced me to what is now my favorite gaming franchise in the strategy genre.
Bought this game from the Steam summer sale for like 5€ if i remember correctly, probably the best purchase i have ever done. Played the game like 2 days at row almost. Started with normal mode, was too difficult. So restarted on easy mode, and it was still difficult, in the beginning, later it got better. I totaly underestimated the Overwatch ability...didn't use it in the beginning at all lol. Oh, and one more thing, i hate those "¤%#%#¤ spider aliens! :D

Ported over a habit from original XCOM: I liked to give my guys callsigns based on stuff they did or things I said to myself while playing. Rookie alone in a room with two aliens, "Uh-oh, I'm behind the eight ball now...." but he lived, and Eight-Ball joined Gargoyle, Bozo, Law-Dog, Knock-Knock, Ruckus, Bigfoot, Shakespeare, and a long cast of others. Losing a soldier had a surprising amount of meaning, beyond having to replace an experienced operative.
can someone explain to me the benefit of bringing an assault class on any of your missions? i always found that having 2 heavys, 3 snipers and 1 support always got me through pretty much every mission (terror missions i went 5 snipers and 1 heavy)

I usually have at least two assaults a mission with lightning reflexes and the crit bonus to Hit and Run. Makes flanking and eliminating enemies a breeze. Plus they can easily surpass or equal in health to an MEC so if they do get in a bad situation they have a good survival chance.

i cried when miss strapon died cause she used to hand out the D so well she was my first captain and will forever be on my hall of fame she ones fought a war so bad with 2 rooks and a mid level warrior against a big barrage of aliens the rooks died quick and painless the warrior got injured panicked died in the 9 turn 4 after the rooks miss strapon was all alone on a important mission that i needed or else suffer big losses like my 3rd best country and the high level soldier i got with it against a army she stayed shot flanked for 20 turns she fought until she got lucky and the alien decided to snuggle next to each other then the grenade of god was unleashed and it got a triple kill she knew it was all sunshine from there as she reloaded her gun equipped run and gun and dashed towards the enemy she finally won . . .the memories THE FEELS are real oh so real she will be missed rip miss strapon (19-04-13/02-05-13) you served your planet well

This game is in a genre that you really just don't see anymore. It was really nice to finally play a turn based tactical game.
This is one of those games where is has a massive mountain of problems, but you notice none of them because it's so beyond awesome that it over-shadows it.

To this day I will never understand why 2K didn't do a Switch port of this instead of XCOM2. Even on my bloody steam deck, Enemy Unknown worked 100% with auto detecting controller inputs...unlike XCOM2. Don't get me wrong, I FREAKING LOVED 2, but FFS it still had performance issues on various PC set ups, and the Switch's hardware should have been something to stay far away from. They could have ported the title that was very console friendly to begin with. Also a much better introduction for anybody remotely new to XCOM.
Joe you should definetly give xenonauts a look. It's really good, keeping the complexity of the original while improving what needed improvement. Its even got good airiel warfare, something none of the xcom games pulled of.

Joe You really cared about your squads.... And actually watching this vid was my first one i've ever watched. It's given me some tips to do when i play my own XCOM playthroughs.
Still one of my favorite games of the past 5 years. The whol character development thing is too true and one of the great things about this game. I almost dropped a tear/went into revenge mode when one of 2 favorite/elite soldiers went down in the enemy within base defense mission (which caught me completely off guard when I played it the first time, but that means the game was doing its job, plus its an amazing mission!). She went down when she got outnumbered by cyberdiscs, and on top of that, that mission doesn't necessarily give your soldiers their full loadouts. The fact the game can make all sorts of different personal stories like this is one of the reasons it is great :)
got the game on PS plus free a couple months ago didn't start playing it till the PS4 game drought lol... im enjoying the fuck out of it right now.. just lost my first soldier so sad :( had him fully leveled

I started playing this I would say this game is easy but I'm playing on normal. But other than that it's really fun. Glad I listened to joe about this. Okay so I played this for while and there's some things I hate
A. You can't pick your class. My favorite guy becomes the one thing I dont want him to be and it just breaks the bond I rename him change everything about him and just forget he exists.
B. Why the hell are aliens strong in the starter missions. I know it's difficult but why should I lose two rookies immediately when the aliens are spotted and kill them with 6 hit critical. It's annoying.
You're basically meant to lose rookies.
The Shiny Golden Emperor that would basically mean your not suppose to even try and play. But seriously I'd understand if I lost them after a couple turns but after immediately seeing aliens and losing two rookies doesn't makes sense
+RebornBySin Un-armoured rookies with the starting pew-pew guns are meant to be complete crap. I guess it helps with the "bonding" and it adds more incentive to upgrade armour, guns etc.

Joe, you are so right! Having a co-op campaign mode would be kick-ass! Like, your allies could be stationed at different countries, you could trade tech and soldiers, you could have multiple Skyrangers and do more missions or you could combine your power for one mission. There are so many possibilities!
I hope they earn enought money to make XCOM 2

Impossible is a great challenge in the first half, but it gets a little easy once you have six colonels and plasma weapons. The key is thinking more flexibly in your tactics. Draw them out, send soldiers far to the sides to flank them without getting shot, actually use the fog to your advantage, and use grenades to create flanking positions, think outside the box. If you're not in a position where flanking is viable, move the battle somewhere else.

I'm also guaranteeing that even people outside of America know very little geography.
Lastly, I find it extremely funny that you would waste your time attacking America. I promise you most Americans don't care about any countries outside the U.S. regardless if we know of them. Be as jealous as you want that we can do whatever we want, but really we don't care about your crying.

i loved this game, the soundtrack is so creepy and dramatic. the upgrades are awesome. shooting aliens is fun
