Yoga Hip Opener Poses and Stretches

  • Your hips and pelvis are known to be tight with emotion. Many people have burst into tears when moving through hip opener stretches, especially in yoga practice. There's a reason it feels so good to release the tension, not only for your muscles, but for your mind.
    I believe we hold emotion in our bodies that can manifest physically. Emotions are energy. When they are not released, they become stuck energy in your body that can morph into tightness or pain.
    Opening your hips and releasing muscle tension helps free your lower back from pain, create more flexibility and movement, and improve leg circulation. But the mind-body approach offers another benefit: releasing built-up stress and negative emotion.
    Follow this 12-minute yoga sequence to lengthen and stretch your hips, legs, and back. Belly breathing, pretzel stretch, quad stretch, kneeling quad stretch, camel pose, downward dog hip openers, pigeon pose, butterfly pose, double pigeon pose, savasana.
