I'm 44 and have I've heard this song nearly 1,000 times over the past 30 years, and honestly I can listen to it anytime on any given day. It's my favorite song and this rendition is the best live performance of all time IMO!
Not only is this the best rendition of this song, it's gotta be top 5 live performances for me, being only memorably eclipsed by Pink Floyd's live wall concerts and Pink Floyd's Pulse tour video.
im 60 old time rock n roller drummer. The 90's were a disappointment to me for good musicianship, catch songs and solid band chemistry. This band rates with all the greats of 70's and early 80's Love 'em.
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life. I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why can't it be mine?" is such an epic lyric here. It's simple, but the emotion he delivers it with can be felt, still, watching this 32 years later. Just an amazing performance. My other favorite lyric from Eddie, is from Jeremy, "Daddy didn't give affection, no. And the boy was something that mommy wouldn't wear." His writing is amazing.
Pearl Jam is definitely a band that is appreciated by yourself. But, they're not all sad. They're insightful, inspirational, angry, joyous. Their music is human. It's not contrived. Thank you for reacting
eddie vedder’s voice has always made me think of drinking hot tea with whiskey with a snuggly blanket on my lap. it’s soothing with just the right amount of edge to warm you up, and it wraps you in warmth and comfort.
and he is as baritone as they come, not the popular sissy tenor (just kidding I love tenors, but its nice to have some variety and see us baritones represented by someone as good as he is)
9:52 YES! His sounds when he’s not singing brings so much feeling and emotion. His grunts, his humming, his ‘yeahs’ his ‘uh’ packs so much emotion. Not only can you hear his pain, you can practically feel his pain by the way he delivers it.
Fun fact he was sick this day and still delivered a unbelievable performance for unplugged! If you get a chance watch the whole unplugged about 45 min. Absolutely incredible!
PEARL JAM, my first love, TOOL my second. Found you guys today reacting to them is like experiencing them for the first time all over again. The whole TEN album is amazing! Unplugged is an experience in itself. This song gets me in the feels every time. Eddie is a force.
This song always makes me bawl. Every time. Though I love the album version, live is a different experience. You guys hit the nail in the head. You feel every emotion.
Great stuff. As someone who grew into this genre as it was developing, I can say that it was very emotionally heavy and reflected the state of my life at the time. My friends and I, however, would have mix tapes consisting of Pearl Jam , Soundgarden, Wu-tang, The Fugees, NOFX, and many more. They were all bands we loved, and even the slow ones got us pumped because they meant something to us.
I can’t not emphasize enough how starved we were for real content not manufactured via boy bands, etc… and how, almost all in the same year, we got Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Dr. Dre and Snoop, and Tupac… I’m missing a lot of groups but I’m not missing how we went from being provided the worst manufactured content to the best music, in an over abundance, that any generation since has known. Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, 2Pac, Dr. Dre and Snoop (The Chronic), OutKast, Blackstreet, Soundgarden, Notorious BIG, Wu Tang Clan, Lauryn Hill, Weezer, Radiohead, etc. endless list is not only still being discussed but still in the current zeitgeist. It didn’t just define a generation, it provided a voice that reflected how we felt. TL:DR - A generation needed representation and an awesome decision maker monetized real artistry over Lou Perlman’s pedophilia oasis of underage boy bands. I’m not knowledgeable about the girl bands but I can guess it was just as awful if not worse….
Driving. Driving is the best time to listen to them. This song too, if you have something on your heart that needs out privately, listen to this on a drive.
As a life long Pearl Jam fan, thank you for this video. It was an absolute treat. You both are killing it and I'm glad I've been a fan of you two for a bit now. Also, love the upgrade on the studio and logo and everything. Looks so good!
Pearl Jam is one of my all-time favorite bands. Eddie Vedder is a lyrical genius. They are so ridiculously talented...I can't even tell you. If you go to one of their shows, it WILL change you! Thanks for reacting, sweeties!!
Two other songs of theirs to catch are "ALIVE" and "JUST BREATH". With Alive look into the backstory of the song. He also did a song called "HUNGER STRIKE" under the band Temple of the Dog
This entire concert was absolute magic, every nuance, every note, the staging, it was just a shimmering, fixed moment in time that will be enjoyed and rediscovered forevermore.
im a big fan of Pearl Jam!!!!!!!! so big!!!!! (my nick is cause of Pearl Jam) hahahha, !!!! amazing reaction!!!! i just discover this artist/GOD......thats no my kind of music, but ....mi mind blew up!!! ive never see or hear any song like this: "Hi Ren", by Ren!!! The song is 1 shoot live, 9 min of a peace of art, i can tell you, your minds will blow up too with this kid!!!!
This band is incredible!! When listening to Pearl Jam you really need to take in the story they are telling. Black is simply about lost love. He’s so incredibly hurt that his world has turned to black “all the love gone bad turned my world to black”….this band is deep! Lots of great songs!!!
90s grunge was a very interesting time. We were just coming out of 80s glam-rock that was very fluffy and one dimension. Then grunge came in and grunge was raw and emotional and self-deprecating and self realizing. Gen-xers didn't have counseling or ADHD drugs or parents who cared we had therapy through music. LOL
I'm not even ashamed to admit that I bawled my eyes out listening to this last week. It was the first time i had ever seen their Unplugged. Just a very crazy, solid, lightning in a bottle sort of performance.
I have seen this performance so many times and you guys are my favorite reactors to this performance. I totally get what you were saying about him being someplace else in the song and you can feel it and see it in his body movements and even blank stares.
Thx for your reaction! In the mid 90s I was 13 yrs old with an abnormal obsession over Eddie Vedder lol. I can't tell you how many hours I spent in my room listening to PJ's albums from start to finish and here I am in my 40s still rocking to them! I love how you both instantly were drawn in by Eddie's vocals and listened to what he was saying.. the man is a lyrical genius
If you want the pure adrenaline passion of PJ (and Eddie), you must watch the song “Porch” on MTV unplugged. Probably the most passionate song ever done on MTV unplugged’s era
you have no idea, i was obsessed back in the day for years straight. they say you dont hear pearl jam, you feel them and its so true! the song release from the sane album is another that hit me hard cuz i can relate to the story so i can feel his pain in his voice and it blew me away. the first time i heard it, i was hooked. i saw them 3 times, always long and they rock. i still cant listen to release without crying. every time, theresa certain line he says that brings me back to when i lost my mom at 13 all the emotions that i felt then, i feel when i hear this song. i can feel his pain! so im a fan. not as much these last few years. i love greta van fleet rn and ouija macc. lmao! good reaction!
Nobody lives in the moment when they sing better than Eddie Vedder. The whole MTV performance was amazing but to really get a feel for Pearl Jam watching videos like Jeremy (uncensored) and Even Flow or better yet live performances like Porch at PinkPop 92 gives you an idea of the energy they have. These are all off their 1st album in 1991. This was their early days. Thirty years later they are still performing. Their latest album Gigaton speaks to current issues like climate change AND they still rock.
I love it when intelligent musicians explore rock music. When to listen to Pearl Jam? When I was seventeen and gas was cheap, getting in the car and just driving for hours. I was an angsty little brat. It seems all we ever did as kids was live in our cars but then again, it was Detroit. This song still makes me feel like going for a drive nearly 30 years later.
Think of it this way. He’s singing that to her. He’s in pain over the love he lost, and he’s looking at her in his mind pleading to her with this song.
I would listen to all day . hey Eddie didn't want to release this because he was afraid it was to deep but he did release and I'm glad he did awesome song also Eddie said this song was personal.
Pearl Jam was part of the soundtrack of my high school years. I was a card carrying member of the Grunge Era along with Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Soul Asylum, Temple of the Dog. Eddie is the only one left all if the other leads in the Grunge Era are dead.
Once again I love the reactions you two have, not just because you're having fun and it reminds me of how much I love the music, but because you're comments are so on point. Even if you're not really doing musical breakdowns, it's really nice to hear that you understand the musicianship that goes in and are still truly delighting in what comes out. It's funny that whoever suggested Pearl Jam started you with unplugged. To me that's like telling someone they'll like coffee and then giving them a cup of decaf. Like...?? I mean, this is a *terrific* performance, but I personally feel its true power comes from contrasting it with the original album or "electrical" live versions of the song. Oh well, that's just me. Pearl Jam and Tool were getting started around roughly the same time. I was in high school at the time and them, and Nine Inch Nails and Rage Against the Machine and Nirvana and Soundgarden and Alice in Chains and PJ Harvey and Tori Amos and Portisehead and Bjork and on and on... made up that 90s alternative sound that was just unparalleled in intelligence, musicianship, as WELL as raw emotion. The thing about understanding grunge & alternative, though, is it's hard to really grasp its power without grasping its context. Like, you have to understand what this was all a reaction TO, and then you can hear how these acts went on to make their own sound. Men who were boys who got beat up because they'd rather play guitar than football, women who were girls who were assaulted because they were smarter or more daring than boys. Probably everyone has what they have to say about their favorite music, and this is mine: this music is powerful because the one rule was the artists HAD TO tell the truth. No hiding, no pulling punches, no hinting or getting cute or whatever. They said what they had to say, almost like they would die if they didn't. Sometimes they used words, but not inherently. So when they have something angry and/or painful to say, you really feel it. That's why it's so great. 💕
Bro as someone who grew up listening to lots of Christian music, I always said Third Day was the “Christian Pearl Jam” 😂😂😂 Love that you made the same comparison!
This is your first time hearing them, well you just heard about the best. Pay attention to those lyrics. It's not just the feeling he's expressing so well, it's also the story. A very good one.
I really enjoy your reactions and how you both describe music and your relationship to it. Another artist I think you'd enjoy is Avi Kaplan. All of his work is beautiful. So much soul and wisdom in his voice and music.
Grunge - love it so much! To see a different side of Eddie and the band, see the live version of 'Evenflow' (official version). Still great Vedder vocals but a really rocking time.
The song ‘Release Me’ is a song written about Ed’s Father. The interesting fact is Ed knew the man but Ed’s Mom waited until he passed when she told him that “he was your father” Listen to Release Me on Pearl Jam 20th Anniversary version~> Mike McCreedy captures the song
My time predates the grunge period. I saw Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Chicago, and many other bands of the 60’s and early 70’s. I can appreciate music from all the periods, but to be honest the music of today is hit or miss with me (mostly miss). One of my favorite artists is Robert Johnson. There’s nothing like listening to his Complete Recordings and hearing 32-20 Blues, Crossroad Blues, They’re Red Hot, If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day, and Hellhound On My Trail to make you appreciate what a supreme talent he was.
One of my all-time favorite songs. Huge Pearl Jam fan since before they filmed this Unplugged. 'Black' is pretty close to Blues, especially when you focus on the lyrics. It's an incredible song, and this is one of the best/emotional performances of it.
I seriously love this reaction…. And seriously can appreciate all of your comments. Hahaha! HOWEVER!! I lost my sh*t at the old school folgers ad. My neighbors probably heard me. Hahah! Great job, guys. Pearl Jam is the shit.
This is, in my opinion, the greatest love song of all time. He may not have her anymore, but he loves her enough that he wants her to be happy. I urge you to look up the lyrics because they are GENIUS. He can sometimes be hard to understand back in this timeframe, if you're not familiar with their music, and you have got to read how he describes what it feels like to lose this love. Eddie may have lost the long, sexy locks, but he hasn't lost that amazing voice.
My boy Jamel says “When a person closes their eyes to sing, they go to the place those lyrics came from.”
I'm 44 and have I've heard this song nearly 1,000 times over the past 30 years, and honestly I can listen to it anytime on any given day. It's my favorite song and this rendition is the best live performance of all time IMO!
Literally, word for word, exactly what I would have posted.
Not only is this the best rendition of this song, it's gotta be top 5 live performances for me, being only memorably eclipsed by Pink Floyd's live wall concerts and Pink Floyd's Pulse tour video.
at this point ive listened to it 100000000 times in the last 24 hours
And can we give a little cred to the band…They nailed every aspect of this unplugged event. So damn good
im 60 old time rock n roller drummer.
My other favorite lyric from Eddie, is from Jeremy, "Daddy didn't give affection, no. And the boy was something that mommy wouldn't wear." His writing is amazing.
That line is so incredibly good, it hurts.
Pearl Jam is definitely a band that is appreciated by yourself. But, they're not all sad. They're insightful, inspirational, angry, joyous. Their music is human. It's not contrived. Thank you for reacting
Very well said 😊

Same here
“I know someday you’ll have
a beautiful life.
I know you’ll be a star
in somebody else’s sky.
But why, why, why can’t it be mine?”
Goddammit 😞💔
Eddie Vedder...often imitated, never duplicated.
People were crazy to try and imitate Eddie or Layne.
9:52 YES! His sounds when he’s not singing brings so much feeling and emotion. His grunts, his humming, his ‘yeahs’ his ‘uh’ packs so much emotion. Not only can you hear his pain, you can practically feel his pain by the way he delivers it.
Check out their official uncensored video of "Jeremy"
Yes the video to Jeremy and their live performance of Release in Amsterdam.
Alice In Chains did an amazing MTV Unplugged too - one of the last performances by their lead singer before he passed 😢
Nutshell! ❤️
@@marilynk30 the best one and so haunting such a beautiful song
I agree 💯!
AIC did unplugged 6 years before layne passed. Nirvana's was 6 months br kurt passed
all of the grunge bands made the best unplugged ones. nirvana as well is just the most amazing ones.
I’m a big Pearl Jam fan but I laughed so hard when he said “I don’t even know what he’s saying right now”. No one ever knows what he’s saying 😂😂
Imagine them listening to Yellow Ledbetter......lol
lol, I actually kinda understand him as a 90's grunge kid!
"How do the words toooo this go? I wish you'd tell me, I don't know~"
Eddie doesn’t know the words either so we’re all in this together💀😂
My first time hearing pearl jam was when I was about 6 and I asked my mom why they're singing backwards
Their song Jeremy needs to be next, very powerful song.
Fun fact he was sick this day and still delivered a unbelievable performance for unplugged! If you get a chance watch the whole unplugged about 45 min. Absolutely incredible!
trust me as a gen-xer - the guy from Creed was doing an Eddie Vedder impression. a lot of grunge and post-grunge singers were.
PEARL JAM, my first love, TOOL my second. Found you guys today reacting to them is like experiencing them for the first time all over again.
The whole TEN album is amazing! Unplugged is an experience in itself. This song gets me in the feels every time. Eddie is a force.
One of the all time best front men. He pours his entire being into a performance. My all time favorite band.
This song always makes me bawl. Every time. Though I love the album version, live is a different experience. You guys hit the nail in the head. You feel every emotion.

The way you put it nailed it - "he's not there, but he's present"
I miss when MTV would do these Unplugged shows. It would truly show how amazing the band was and just really bring you down to earth with the music.
As a life long Pearl Jam fan, thank you for this video. It was an absolute treat. You both are killing it and I'm glad I've been a fan of you two for a bit now. Also, love the upgrade on the studio and logo and everything. Looks so good!
Also, you both absolutely get the vibe of the song which is the most important part of a good Pearl Jam song honestly.
Thanks so much and thanks for sticking with us! - Dre
You both articulate the mood and feelings of the music you react to so well .
Watch it again with the lyrics. Such an emotional and powerful song. You just watched a masterpiece from the 90s. Great reaction.
Hope you guys explore more of the Seattle bands of this era. Soundgarden and Alice In Chains will blow your mind with their vocals.
100000000%
💯
Definitely. I would love to see them do Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun.
Black Hole Sun is so over done. They have way better music. Outshined is a perfect example.
@@brandonb9978 BHS is a great track. If it's overplayed, that's why. To each their own. Soundgarden is a great band worth exploring.

Yup. Eddie's mmmm's are the BEST! He sings from the soul and reaches the soul. And yes, he's gorgeous too.
I saw pearl jam back in 1994 and was thoroughly impressed that their live show was as good as any album version stuff.
This entire concert was absolute magic, every nuance, every note, the staging, it was just a shimmering, fixed moment in time that will be enjoyed and rediscovered forevermore.
Saw them live in September. Greatest show I've ever been to. Great reaction! They have a ton of great songs!

So awesome that you guys have an unbiased opinion here. Cause it's clearly really important music from the 1990s

Pearl Jam is one of the best bangs ver. Saw them in little theaters in the 90’s and they are definitely better live then the albums
Even Flow the official video is pretty sick!!! Peace from New Zealand

Eddie Vedder is a top notch artist and an even better human. You can’t go wrong exploring his music
He expresses so beautifully the deep pain of lost romantic love. It’s a phenomenal performance of my favorite song by Pearl Jam.
They put on some of the most amazing live shows I've ever seen. I've caught them over a dozen times, and they never disappoint.

This is my favorite song of all time. I really like seeing people’s reaction to hearing it for the first time! It’s so deep and impactful!
I love your take on music....”breathing each other in, breathing each other out...”
Eddie never wanted to play this live because it was so painful for him. The fact the song became so popular stressed him out.

There’s nothing like listening to his Complete Recordings and hearing 32-20 Blues, Crossroad Blues, They’re Red Hot, If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day, and Hellhound On My Trail to make you appreciate what a supreme talent he was.
as one of my all time favorite songs, it's amazing to see others enjoying it as much as i do!
One of my all-time favorite songs. Huge Pearl Jam fan since before they filmed this Unplugged. 'Black' is pretty close to Blues, especially when you focus on the lyrics. It's an incredible song, and this is one of the best/emotional performances of it.
You can feel the pain, because we have been there.
I still get goosebumps hearing this ❤
I seriously love this reaction…. And seriously can appreciate all of your comments. Hahaha! HOWEVER!! I lost my sh*t at the old school folgers ad. My neighbors probably heard me. Hahah! Great job, guys. Pearl Jam is the shit.
So Deep, soulful and sad. Great performance!!
In the 90s it came out when the Seattle grunge scene was huge nirvana , ECT. We used to play it at parties at the end of the night
The last pause was almost criminal.
I always thought he sounds like the lead singer of Third Day.. both powerful, emotionally charged voices
Spot on analysis guys. Enjoyed this one
Beautiful break down guys, enough said.
Planetarium is the word he’s looking for.
"Hes definitely top shelf tho"
Top tier content i look for.
"He definitely top shelf." Nice lol 👍
Love the reaction! And love the mug, go Dawgs!
All the bands to do the MTV unplugged were on point.
