  • In part 5 of our 8 Limbs of Yoga series, we explore Pratyahara, the practice of going inward, withdrawing our senses. By calming external stimuli, we're able to better tune in, align, and restore our body, mind, and spirit.
Most of us are bombarded with external stimuli all day long and have a hard time concentrating on one task at a time. While there are many ways to practice pratyahara, I like teaching a blindfold class to completely eliminate the sense of sight from asana practice.
Try it with us at home!

21/2/23 done 🙏🏾. My eyes were closed most of the time but was unable to do pigeon, high crescent and dancer's pose with my eyes closed 😹. Great routine Helen & team 😸😄😇😀🙌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾

I do a large portion of my yoga practice with eyes closed- it feels more natural and I can focus on the sensations in my body. I used to be an Ashtangi and would regularly get 'yelled' at by the more traditional teachers for closing my eyes 😂 Now I practice at home and do what I want. Can't wait to try this one'

Yess! Me too! I hate when teachers tell you to open your eyes - it's your practice, do what you want! Yay! Enjoy and namaste :)

This was a really neat practice. It definitely got easier as I went along to know where my body was in space. Tree pose was virtually impossible lol. Super fun.

Thank you for offering this practice. I trusted and followed your guidance with blind eyes. Challenging and fun at the same time. Enjoyed the insights given throughout the practice.

Hi Helen! Interesting as always. Finding props and water bottles without the sense of sight is hard. My tree should have been renamed reed bending in the violently swirling wind. Those of us who can see rely so much on the visual; did you notice you said, "Look forward," even though no one could?
I found myself not so much turning off my senses but developing different ones. After coming off my mat and trying to refind my position a few times, I realized I had started checking myself by using the sense of touch - feeling for the edges of my mat, bumping my big toes together to check that my feet were in the same line, etc. This was not a conscious decision and made me think of how adaptable humans truly are.
Namaste, and thanks for giving us such insightful practices! Hugs.

Hi Suzanne, I'm smiling imagining your reed pose! And yes, I notice that I use visual cues A LOT - ha, not so appropriate for this class, oopsie :) I love that you were able to tune-in to your other senses; we certainly are quite adaptable. As always, thank you for your support and lovely comments. Have a beautiful weekend!

eyes closed helped me turn on the muscles and feel. interesting practice. will try to do eyes closed more, when it feels right...and even when it doesn't because it does give a different perspective!
