      Anita Erickson Carpets are nasty. They use them to insulate the floors in old houses that lose a lot of heat, but I think they are germy and gross. No matter how clean you keep them, you can’t bleach them like you can other flooring and I don’t like that. 🤷🏽

    My husband and I (both in our seventies) just finished laying 24square metres of laminate flooring on top of our old carpet. Not a problem! Came up looking beautiful and even. The only thing was our sore backs and shoulders!

      We used 8mm solid laminate planks. And are carpet was well worn! I don't know how well it would lay on thick pile carpet, but even in the places our carpet was still reasonable it laid just fine.

    I'm a general contractor(not a flooring expert) but the carpet will mold 100% due to the natural moisture in the air. You'll be replacing the carpet when you go to remove this anyways. Not to mention I wouldn't want to breath that for any extended period of time. Be careful!

      I live in an apartment with carpet. I have cats. I can't remove the carpet because I rent. If I did this but not wall to wall will I still get mold? I was thinking 8x10 plywood with sticky vinyl on it. Like big throw rugs made out of plywood and sticky vinyl. Leaving the border of the room exposed. Would that get enough air? And, I could lift up the plank panel to clean underneath and check for mold. I would throw all of this away when I move. What do you think?

Of course the video shows what appears to be brand new carpet, but for those who have pets that have burden your carpet…. I’d say treat it like leftovers… when in doubt throw it out. I certainly wouldn’t place plywood over carpet, but best of everything to those who can and do! ❤

    • @Rio-su3yp
      @Rio-su3yp 4 роки тому +7

      This is a genuine question because I’m thinking of doing this and you bring up something I never considered so I want to know what came to mind.... what moisture would accumulate between the carpet and the planks if planks are waterproof? Do you think there could possibly be condensation building in between them orrrr are you thinking something different? also, do you think this would be an issue for an apartment that is 2nd floor?

    • @JulindaTV
      @JulindaTV 4 роки тому +11

      @@Rio-su3yp I am not an expert on flooring installation but I do some interior desogn. I would think that because it is not sealed properly & because people are always breathing out moisture there is bound to be a possibility for mould in the long term. It only takes a little bit of humidity to be trapped to create a damp area in my opinion. Since the edges are not going to be totally sealed.
      But in the short term for say 2 weeks a temporary floor would be ok if you use a dehumidifier.
      I say rhis based on experience at shows/expos with temporary floors & as a photographer using temp floors & seeing objects go mouldy such as my cat scratching post :) when a small amount of moisture got underneath it. I would love to think it would be easy but I think if you are renting or want to protect your carpet, put a piece of cut vinyl or carpet or rug on the top & lift it up to clean it regularly.
      Nice plain rugs e.g. white blend an ugly floor away from being visually dominant. Until you can have the floor you want.

    • @dgan2304
      @dgan2304 2 роки тому +5

      I would think you're not likely to get much mould underneath/on the carpet since it will be sealed not only by plywood but by your new flooring too. You could always use baseboard trims to better seal it. I wouldn't be concerned about it. Use mahogany plywood if you can because it's quite moisture resistant.

    • @FlooringInc
      @FlooringInc  4 роки тому +11

      Hello Christopher, this would depend on your application. If you are working with a commercial grade carpet which is typically very thin and your area is level you may only need to lay the moisture barrier. If the carpet is a bit to plush to help provide an even surface you can then add plywood.

      Vinyl Flooring is a new type of floor material made of stone-plastic composite material. It consists of a 5-layer structure, including wear-resistant layer, UV coating, decorative layer, SPC core layer and backing layer. The advantages of Vinyl Flooring are environmental protection, waterproof, mildew-proof, wear-resistant, easy to clean, easy to install, corrosion-resistant and beautiful. It can better imitate the color and texture of other types of solid wood floors, ceramic tiles, floor tiles, etc.

      That is a great question, Lily! In some instances, such as renting a home, a customer may only want the flooring while they are in the space until they move. Attach quarter round to the baseboard after you're done to cover the gap between the baseboard and new flooring left by the spacers. Remove the quarter round when you move out.

    Hi. I'm looking to do this project in our living room. We are renting and the carpet is beige, is not as "fluffy" like the one in the video, but neither flat like a office floor carpet. Do you think using just a thick underlayment can I have the firmness to apply the planks? Thanks

    • @FlooringInc

      Yes, you will want to try to compress this carpet as much as possible to provide a firm even surface. Another option is removing the carpet all together.

    A real review of this video--The 1/4 inch plywood is super expensive and you can still feel the carpet underneath. I paid $31 a sheet and needed 5 sheets. That was the cheapest one. This video is helpful to an extent, but I should’ve gone with my instinct and gotten the 3/4 inch utility wood for half the price and better durability. I’m barely over 100 pounds and the 1/4 inch plywood underneath feels wobbly. I don’t know why every UA-cam video on this content is pushing for the 1/4 inch plywood

    This sounds like a bad idea. Add plywood and planks on top of the carpet. I am surprised I don't see too many criticisms on this hack. I see 3 big problems:
    1. the baseboards will need to be re-done. People considering this method probably have those short baseboard which means replacement for sure.
    2. room door need to be cut since you you adding more than half an inch to the floor heights.
    3. Transition into other rooms especially areas with existing tile or wood floors. Unless you are doing the entire space, the transition might be weird.
    Also the purpose of using this method is to save trouble. Laying down plywood, re-doing base boards and cutting doors may not save you too much time and money over ripping out the old carpet.

      dejay9995 spend the money on moving to a place with better flooring, LVP is not cheap. Many rentals are switching to it so there are options out the in the rental market. One person posted on here to get plywood from amazon, which is absurd when a local lumber yard has all you need and doesn’t treat their employees like slaves. Finally I’ll say that you need not take my word for it, go look up what the major manufacturers installation requirements are for these floors. We pros have warranty issues we are liable for when we install these floors so we can’t get away with what this video is saying you can do. Notice how it’s geared for the do-it-yourselfers who don’t know how for over your head you’re going to be. I can’t even tell you how many things I see wrong with this idea but look up how the pros install a whole house including undercutting the door casing do it looks like the floor was put in first, anything less will look like a young child installed the floor.
