Replaced my shifter cable today. This video was very helpful, especially the part about taping the new cable to the old. We tied the two cables together with a couple of zip ties before we duct taped them together. Added another zip tie and retaped the cables once we had pulled the cables thru the firewall and into the driver compartment. Machine is back in service. Thanks again.
Hey Buck. Thanks a lot for taking time to show us , how its done. I am changing cable on my Ranger 1000, rigth now, and i was actually starting to get a litlle worried, as i had to assemble more and more. But it seems to be the only solution, which you showed us! 🙏 Regards from Denmark Martin🌲🔥
This video will certainly help. I'm down to getting the tunnel guard off and getting the new cable through the firewall. That looks to be the hardest part. Hoping it goes as well as yours appeared to go. Thanks for the video! Much appreciated.
Im working on one for a customer, it has a/c and all the duct work. Man what job! Very poor design to have to take apart so much stuff just to replace that cable. Thanks for your videos it does give an insight as to what has to be done!
Hi Buck, Any tips on how to remove the air breather. I've got the machine stripped down but not sure on how to remove the air breather caps so I can take out the underhood liner so as not to damage the gasket around the entry port which the cable runs through. This is something you mentioned in your video. Thanks for video, it is very helpful.
Use the Polaris pliers that come with the unit to remove the push pins, maybe a flat head screwdriver to get the pins out if they are turned a wonky way. Put them back in clocked in way that’s easier to remove them in the future.
How do you get through that grommet? Great video that has help me a lot. I just can get through the grommet in the dash board. Mines a North Star edition
This is a great tutorial on completing this complicated job I would suggest this one thing………… Replace the factory junk cable with a “MORSE” cable and never ever ever NEVER have to do this job again It is COMPLETELY ridiculous how poorly these factory cables are made WoW !!! Whoever was in charge of the design between the shift handle and the cable should actually be in the unemployment line It is not “if” but “when” it fails They all do 🤦♂️
My shifter did the same thing when i put it in H. It just freely dropped. I manually put it back in park. Itll shift up to N L H. But not back. Does that mean mines probly broke as well? Itll push it into gear but wont pull it out?
Wouldn’t it be nice if the heim joints threaded on the end of the cable So the big nuts and washer could be installed AFTER the cable was smoothly routed through this gauntlet 🤦♂️ You listening Polaris ?

And stop shifting while moving!

I honestly can't remember. It's been a while. Sorry.
Spraying the rubber grommet and cable with isopropyl alcohol works wonders!
