Heard Dr Lustig last October. Dropped all sugar (I eat fruit), dropped all processed food and dropped all alcohol. No “cutting back”.. all gone Instantly. Life is so incredible. I feel half my age. Thank you. I ate cookies for breakfast both yesterday and today. The joints in my fingers hurt and I feel terrible. I've watched Dr. Lustig before, but I have learned more in the first 42 minutes of this interview than I've ever learned in my life. I still don't want to stop eating the cookies. I'm sure its the addiction talking. I need to just hunker down and do it. We hardly at sugar growing up and I was so much healthier and happier as a kid and through my young adult life.

I totally changed my dietary life three years ago to eliminate all sugars and toxins. Zero ultra processed foods. I Was invited to speak at a Vietnam veterans social meeting… the host insisted that I partake of the free food. After much insistence I gave in and ate a mini cup cake. Big mistake. I could feel the inflammatory sugar going through my body for over three hours after. Reconfirmed my original commitment to myself and my wife.
This exact thing happened to me over this past weekend. I was in Saint Louis and I promised my sister I would get some gooey butter cake . Needless to say I got it and ate sugar and bread all weekend. By Tuesday I felt like I had the flu. It’s was bad . Back to carnivore .😅
@@B3zpristrasten1 lol, because it happened to me also - ate some candy after over a year without. Broke out in a horrible rash on my face (never have skin issues even before going carnivore); joint pain and foul mood. Back on track and symptoms have gone back to hell where they belong.
Since discovering Dr Lustig’s videos I’ve drastically cut my high sugar intake . Whenever I weaken and eat sweet stuff within a day I experience pain in my fingers from my early arthritis. This is proof of it’s inflammatory effect as I am otherwise pain free.
I totally changed my lifestyle two years ago I eliminate all ultra processed foods and sugar out of my diet, I workout 4-5 days a week, the only thing I drink is water. I reversed high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high insulin, got my vitamin D from 20 to 70 and I’m down 80lbs. The food is really a big part of the problem, thanks for sharing.
@@MOAB-UT you don't need to add salt to water, there is plenty of salt in your food when you cook it, unless someone is cooking salt free then there is an issue but not just any salt, must be Himalayan or Celtic, certainly not basic table salt.

Tomorrow is a month without sugar, refined sugar, processed food, and seeded oils. That first week and a half was vety rough. But, my moods are better and I'm less anxious and significantly calmer. Wow!!!

@@charlieseen1648No, in moderate amounts only as fruits contain fructose. Fructose is a natural sugar that not needed by the body. However, due to the fiber in fruits, fructose is less damaging to the body, especially the liver.
I can confirm that the first 7 days of sugar withdrawal are hell, I had to go through withdrawal 7 years ago due to health reasons. Going cold turkey is hard, but so worth it! 7 years on I feel, and am so much healthier with much more energy. Cutting out sugar feels like it has rejuvenated me by at least 20 years.

Our ancestors only ate honey if they stumbled across a hive, they didnt consume it daily or farm bees. The amino acid L-Glutamine helps reduce sugar cravings.
I have watched this video 2 times and bought Dr Lustig book Metabolic for a friend with ALS and 1 for me. I changed my diet, very low carb, dark leafy greens, berries, celery, wild caught sockeye salmon, chicken, green olives, avocados, extra virgin olive oil, pecans, walnuts, LeGruyere cheese from Switzerland, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cucumber, bone broth, baby bella mushrooms, red cabbage, lemon ginger tea, lemons for water, cinnamon, and apple cider vinegar. Lost 15 pounds in 2 months and feeling so good. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes A1C was 7.5 I am going to heal my entire body with food. Thank you for the podcasts and book. I knew a lot about food since 1979 and then didn't apply it and got fat. Now I am healing

I was a super addict. I could not say no. Milkshakes daily. Understanding how harmful Sugar is and knowing it only feels good on my Toung. I have been sugar free for 50 days. I love food again. My tastebuds are amazingly sensitive. Veggies taste better than I could have ever imagined. I have lost 40 lbs. Weight is not a true barometer, but I have only eaten natural foods and meat. Understanding it was an Addition helped me understand how to control what I eat. Reading labels are a habit that was fun and shocking, but my wife and I are finally in control. All other diets don't treat addition and a ton of diet food has sugar leading to more addictions with a calorie deficit. There are no shortcuts. FEED YOUR GUT PROTECT YOUR LIVER!!!

I had forgotten til I read your post that food actually did taste sweeter after quitting sugar; this was forty (!) years ago and my health is good now and if I want something sweet I will occasionally take pure maple syrup or pure honey and just a teaspoonful is enough... I found there is a condition which develops when one consumes too much sugar and there are remedies to help break the sugar habit which a doctor or a pharmacist can explain which can reduce the craving when consuming lots of sugar has become a habit. I feel so good now I would never go back to what I had been consuming since childhood... mountains of sugar!!! and my teeth appreciate this too!
I was first diagnosed at age 8 with juvenile Idiopathic Rheumatoid arthritis and 4 years ago I was disabled and approved for a scooter and was looking to get a wheelchair, but my doing the AIP Autoimmune Protocal Paleo diet and lifestyle plus me doing time restricted eating of 16/8 where I stop eating by 8 pm and I don't eat again till noon the next day I was able to bring all my Rheumatoid Arthritis disease activity and symptoms down to zero. So I am no longer disabled. Also my grandmother had been an invalid from RA since she had been 16 and my mom has RA and is disabled from it with deformed hands and feet. And I am the first one to halt the RA. I am also no longer on my heavy duty RA meds of Methotrexate and Enbrel. I went back to school and now help others with Autoimmune diseases to lower disease activity and symptoms. I only eat real whole nutrient dense foods so cutting out the sugar and cutting out processed and packaged foods absolutely make a life changing difference. I wish we all could wake up out of the matrix and what the food industry has done and the pharmacy companies and our healthcare system has done.
I went keto for a few months and lost 15 kilos, I then went carnivore for a few months and lost more weight, I can’t believe at how calm I am and how well I sleep, my aches and pains have all but disappeared all because I stopped sugar and carbs.

My mom took care of her mom (my grandmother) for 23 years. She had Alzheimers. The last 11 years she was bedridden. She died at home. Now my mom now has dementia. Seeing how my own health has kept deteriorating (gaining weight, inflammation, arthritis, bloating, acid reflux, constant tiredness, brain fog, constant hunger) and I am only 52...I have decided to do something about my health. After much researching, have been doing TRF and IF for the last 2 years. Most of the symptoms I had are gone. Along with the IF I have also been working on fixing my diet, eating much less processed foods, working on eating less carbs and reducing much sugar intake. I feel the difference. I am so glad I decided to change and do something about my health. I have always excercised and still do. But the change has come because of the dietary changes I have done.

If not, please do so and educate her in a way she’ll understand the benefits. **A little story** My MIL is bedridden. She’s in a home and goes from the bed to the recliner. The caregivers move her around in a wheelchair. If they don’t move her, she doesn’t move. (She’s obese, diabetic, has dementia, possibly schizophrenia among other diseases). She’s chronically inflamed and cries almost daily because of the joint pains. The faculty is also culpable because they are all too happy to provide her with the various junk foods she requests. It’s a “fancy” one that spoils the residents. My partner sees and knows all this, yet he’s not making healthy lifestyle changes. I grieve for him because he’s heading down the same road his mom is on. For years he’s had some of the same diseases she has, but isn’t motivated to eat better or exercise. I’m so saddened by this.

I am on day 4 of no sugar. Also quit using equal in my coffee. Definitely taking some getting used to. My main problem was ice cream; I would eat like 3 bowls every night. And chocolate. I would literally buy a bag of chocolate and eat the entire bag in one sitting. The insanity had to stop. Lost 2.5 lbs so far
Today is my 12th day without sugar. I am 41 years old male . South Asian. Bangladeshi. I lost so far 4 kg in 10 days . I was 97 and today I am around 93 kg. Just one thing I did stopped all processed sugar but having whole fruits . So far amazing feeling . Having planning to keep continuing at least until I achieve 80 kg in sha Allah. Dr Lustig is an American HERO! His book "Metabolical" has been a game changer for me. I'm excited to learn he has designed a template to create healthier processed food. There is no way we can escape processed food...even health nuts like me. The blanched almond flour I use to make my delicious coconut pancakes from scratch.... is highly processed. My biggest concern is NOT sugar, but glyphosate. I found out that I have a high amount of glyphosate in my body.....which is Crazy...given I only eat organic, pasture raised meat, wild caught fish...etc...etc...etc. I suspect it is coming from the expensive wine I drink occasionally. I read that they tested 100 CA wines, and all had glyphosate. I stopped drinking wine....and will be tested again soon. It has become so hard to protect my health from the toxins in food and our environment!

I'm 61 and I haven't felt my old self for the past 3yrs and seemed to observe accelerated aging in my skin and hair. I started six weeks ago by going totally off sugar and simple carbs like rice, pasta, maize and all processed food although I have small amounts of bread and potato. I also battled the first week and felt like I was separated from my fix but I feel a lot better. I've started losing weight too. Now that I've started, I'm hoping to clean up my diet even more and to work towards better health now that I'm older. I'm still using a little Stevia but hoping to stop that soon too. As a post-menopausal woman, I'm focused on quality of life now.
Carbohydrate ages you. Aging is largely related to glycation, which is caused whenever you consume carbs. Fasting can help undo this damage but you must also lower your carbs if you want to be healthy! Some benefits of doing occasional extended fasting: High blood pressure is lowered to normal levels very quickly while fasting. Fibrosis/scarring is reversed over time. Fasting increases nitric oxide release. Fasting restores NAD+ to healthy levels. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased as fasting improves metabolic health, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy. Stomach acid is reduced over time while fasting and can allow for the healing of treatment resistant ulcers, but some patients may need continued acid reducation medication while fasting. Telomeres are lengthened and fasting also increases anti-aging Yamanaka factors. Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body. Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria, plaques and viruses by the immune system. It will also remove any 'foreign material' that is not supposed to be there. Reflexes and short term memory are increased. After 72 hours or more fasted, your body recycles up to 1/3 of all immune bodies, rejuvenating your entire immune system. Fasting can help with MS, Depression, BPD, Autism and seizures. Fasting reduces pain and anxiety by stimulating the endocannabinoid system in a similar way to CBD oil. Thymus is regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. The thymus also plays a vital role in fighting cancer. Weight loss from daily caloric restriction has 1/4 to 1/3 of the weight lost as lean tissue while many studies show fat loss from 36 h fasts without losing any lean tissue! The hunger hormone ghrelin also lowers with extended fasting and rises from dieting. Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus. When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state. What breaks a fast? Anything with protein or carbohydrates in it will break a fast. Most teas and herbs are OK. Most supplements and meds will either break ketosis directly or contain a filler that will. Many meds are dangerous to take while fasting. Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it when the fast is broken by increasing lutenizing hormone. Fasting also increases insulin sensitivity, which helps with muscle building. Fasts of 36-96 will not affect short term female fertility or affect menstrual cycle. They also may increase long term fertility, especially in women with PCOS. The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again! Does the body preferentially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, except for brief periods of very intense exercise, your body mainly burns fats in the form of free fatty acids. Your brain also prefers to burn ketones at a rate of around 2.5 to 1 when they are available in equal quantity to glucose. Fasting stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells Lowering insulin via fasting virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. When not in ketosis, the brain can only burn carbohydrate, which produces a great deal of damaging ROS the brain has to deal with. It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention! Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth. This can help a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers. In fact, the biochemical regulator of BDNF production is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting. When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells, destroying them. Senescent cells are responsible for many of the effects of aging and are a root cause of the development of cancer. A fasting mimicking diet for 3-5 days in a row also provides many of the same benefits as water fasting. FMD usually has 200-800 calories, under 18 g of protein and extremely low carbs. Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. @@aminaschmiat6476 I checked that and found that there are about 50 different strains of Stevia and some of them tend to be somewhat toxic and others are simply not palatable so that only certain strains are good to use as sweetner. A Swiss company (Sweetlife) are experts at drying and packaging natural sweetners. It is made under their licence and available in my country under the Selati label. It containes only some cellulose gum and lactose but is by far the nicest tasting stevia to use.
@@LTPottenger 100%. I'm trying to have a little carb portion only once a day as opposed to having it at every meal. I've done my first 36hr fast and I'm hoping to work up to 3 day water fasts once a month at least. I'm starting to understand all this. Fortunately I'm still in fairly good health and not using any chronic meds. I was showing signs of moving towards being insulin resistant though so I'm motivated to fix this.

Back in 2007 I was pregnant with my 3rd child. I tested positive for gestational diabetes and had to take my glucose leveks 5 times a day, keep a record of every food I ate in a low-sugar journal, and got a weekly stress test for baby every single Friday. I was starving myself by keeping to 15g net carbs (on a vegetarian diet) but my glucose numbers were double what they should have been. My dietitian said I was the tiniest person she ever had in her office and for some reason (likely stress) my body was producing sugars that I wasn't consuming through food. I was prescribed insulin pills (which I refused to take) and eventually gave birth full term weighing 107lbs ... baby was 6lbs 15oz. I left the hospital at 100.5 lbs and as soon as my placentia was delivered my blood sugars went back to normal and I ordered everything I could off of that hospital menu! Lol Crazy thing is my next 3 pregnancies were borderline GD but I managed my glucose with strict diet and eventually started to eat meat and then eventually keto. All kids were born healthy and I continue to eat low-carb and almost zero processed food (birthday cake pass) ... also I no longer drink alcohol. Just like alcohol, I can't think of any health benefits we get while consuming sugar. My point is that it's TRUE our bodies produce enough sugars for us naturally and we don't need to supplement them in any processed form. My dessert treat is a piece of fruit and a cup of coffee or tea - sugar free. 😉

Finally made it through this video after 2 weeks...listening to it on my way to and from work, and as I fell asleep each night. I always started about 10-30 mins prior to where I left causing me to hear several items over and over and over. Something kept telling to listen all the way through and I'm so glad I did especially hearing the part about my large midsection. At 1:47:59, BAM! My belly fat comes from stress! I've heard this before, but for whatever reason, this time I HEARD IT! At age 52, I am now determined to find a way to greatly reduce my stress including more sleep, less screen time (big and small), and ridding myself of toxic people and situations. It is my personal responsibility to do just that. I'll also slowly fix the way I eat which I'm sure will work itself out when I greatly reduce the toxicity in my life. Thank you for all this info that a pcp never speaks about. I am 73 who needs to do sugar detox definitely. I am really motivated after listening. When my son was born in Austria in 1980. I was in great shape. The Austrians eat bacon eggs etc Had at that time less obesity cholesterol problems . I had fullfat real cheese meat veggies sauerkraut bread fruit. Some great chocolate. I had such rich breast milk they wAnted me to donate. I walked no car. People listen to these two intelligent people. I will research alk that was discussed. Thank you for your contributions
I honestly believe that Dr. Lustig is the single most important person to listen to if you want to restore your health. Science and medicine are the foundation of what he knows and the depth of knowledge is tremendous. Food is medicine. You need to understand this to accept what needs to be done.
Ever since I quit sugar (for the most part) about three years ago, I feel 100% better. It seemed like I was always having some kind of ailment every couple of weeks I would have somewhere different in my body. I'm pretty sure it was the sugar causing inflammation, mostly in my joints and tendons. I also had the beginnings of arthritis in my shoulder and hip joints. But that's all gone now and being 50 I now feel better than I did when I was 30! Dr Lustig knows what he speaks of.
When u said "cola fries...take the lettuce and tom of the burger"..."don't eat ONE VEGETABLE". And then said "do you think those people are watching?" YES!! You spoke DIRECTLY to me on this and I can't thank you enough 🥺🥺🥺🥺

I started 90 days ago, one week in and got my doctor to do an A1C, fasting insulin. She did it but stated she did not know how to interpret it. My levels came back, A1C 5.7 which is I believe high normal, she said my insulin was low at 15 below 25. I stopped all sugar and anything from a box, at present mostly carnivore with minimal dairy. Mental health has greatly improved, the need to exercise and move is crazy, lost 40 pounds and feeling sexy again. Stopping sugar wow, was so not with energy first few days I was not a sweet tooth but ya you will miss it. I feel great again at 67 years young, I bought the book comes tomorrow also bought hard read but great ketogenic by nutrition network and dr Berry and Kim Howerton common sense labs, thanks for the great work you both do
Thanks for hosting Dr. Lustig, he is truly on to something here, as are other brave doctors, researchers, and dieticians. Minute 31:00-32:00, I couldn't agree more! Insulin causes mitogenesis, cell proliferation! As a 65 year old male suffering from BPH (enlarged prostate) for over two decades and trying everything under the sun short of surgical (horror) procedures, I can attest! A few months into a keto diet has reversed my BPH symptoms. I do something now I haven't done in over a decade, sleep the night through without having to get up and urinate. My sleep is better, sex is better, allergies are better, dry eye, inflammation, and on and on. Keep your insulin down people, it is what's killing you slowly!
right on, bro. i also had BPH & a PSA score of 7.5. started low carb, no processed food, no sugar, no dairy. a year and a half later, my PSA is 4.5. all negative symptoms gone. also took broccoli sprout extract as per Rhonda Patrick.
Something else I noticed I honestly think it gives a boost to self esteem to NOT be hooked on that white powder!!! I feel free and my health has had a big boost too.
Got diagnosed with sever nonalcoholic fatty liver,kidney,gallstones and prediabetes lately. Following Dr lustigs advise. After a week of almost no fructose intake, drowsiness is gone, more enregized, GERD is not bethering me anymore. Looking forward to losing my liver fat. Thank you dr Lustig!
Awesome! I’m making changes tomorrow one baby step at a time. I’m 71 year old female with diabetes. It’s a whole new way of life but I know that I can do better in cutting out sugar. No family support but I have to do this for myself. I have lower back and knee pain which is caused by lack of exercise and need to improve cutting out carbs etc. I found this video scrolling cause I have problem sleeping.

As someone who lives in Kuwait, I was surprised to hear Dr. Lustig talking about KDD - at first, I though I must have heard wrong! But I'm really glad to hear what KDD is doing, and I think a lot of their customers will be happy about this.
Back in 2019 already a few years into menopause postmenopausal I guess we would call it. I lost 34 pounds. My hormones were out of whack. My joints ached. I was not eating well due to the loss of my husband four years before. I went to a homeo pathic center for women called the Be balanced hormonal weight loss center. They put me on a 30 day Boot Camp diet, eliminating sugar, refined carbohydrates, and limiting dairy to check for food sensitivities. There’s four phases to this plan so by the time I hit the fourth phase I was re-introducing certain foods to see how I would feel after I ate them. Long story short here it is 2023. I’ve maintained my weight within 3 pounds and I feel fantastic at 56 years of age. I feel better now than I did at 40. I don’t eat any food out of a box. I eat plant-based and mainly carnivore. I have my blood work, checked twice a year, and so far so good! It was the best move I ever made. In the beginning it seems like a lot of work. It takes a lot of planning and you have to be a bit organized when you go to the grocery store and not participate in impulse, consumer driven buying. In regards to the change of diet it’s like taking a house and converting it from oil heat to natural gas. Your re-orientating your body to burn fat instead of sugar and carbohydrates. There is a physical reaction that will go on in your body while making this transition but you will get over the hump . I’ve learned a lot from Dr. Robert Lustig. I’ve been listening to him for years and reading his books. The more you educate yourself and learn how these foods, sugar and refined carbohydrates affect your body the more you will want to stay away from them. The motto I live by is that I don’t eat any food that has a television commercial. Any food that is advertised on TV should probably not be consumed.
JC I'm 53 and things are starting to crash down around me. Post-menoausal and on more meds now than I've ever been. Thyroid, estradiol, prilosec, and antidepressants. I've kicked sugar before but to think about doing it right this minute actually terrifies me. I go through different levels of sugar addiction and when it's high I can't even think of stopping even though I know I'll feel better. I'll get there again, sooner rather than later, but staying off it is hard!
Excellent way to evaluate your meal, simply rethinking its nutritional compound…is it dessert? That thought process can be used as a tool. Remembering dessert is ok once in awhile, just not everyday for breakfast, lunch & dinner! It’s easiest for me to eat whole foods to completely avoid the hassle of having to read labels, but most importantly eating in a healthy manner. I love the motto, “Eat to live, not live to eat”.

@@atiyashabbir102 I have always been thin. I am only 5'8" tall. Thin , shorter people live longer in general. My mom lived to 94 years old. She was small. Try to eat less. Excercise. Do NOT drink soda or juice. I eat "mostly " plant based but I do eat some healthy meat and eggs. Do NOT eat junk foods. Try not to eat anything in a box or a can. I a. 74 years old and I have never had any aches or pains. Never had acid reflux, bloating, constipation. I can't ever remember blowing my nose. One $4 prescription in my life (antibiotic for root canal). One sick day from work in 52 years of working. No secret or magic pill.
@@atiyashabbir102 I started exercising when I was 11 years old. I have never smoked or done illegal drugs. I worked way too much (10 hour days and Saturdays) so maybe keeping active helps. I never ate really bad. Never liked cookies, candy or sweets. Always ate decent and now that I am retired I eat REALLY clean. No real great secret. My mother lived to be 94 years old and the only prescription I remember her taking was a bone strengthening pill. I don't take any medication at all.
it's harder these days as there is sugar and other addictive ingredients in almost everything . babies and kids grow up on soda and junk food so it's harder for them to break it . you grew up with less of this stuff going on which is a good thing
I totally agree with everything is this fantastic podcast! I love alcohol. I don’t drink that often, but man I will never give it up and I am a much nicer person knowing there’s alcahol in the world! 😇 I know several people who drink who are in their 100’s (one who is 104 and she has only just gone into a nursing home. I know people in their 60’s who got heart attacks from eating carbs, potatoes, porridge etc I’d rather have a few drinks! But overall the people I see with cancer in their 30’s absolutely 40’s are clean living porridge and spud eaters… I would ban porridge and potatoes as they are eaten every day. The kids in this house can have porridge as a treat at night on the weekends with heavy cream!!! 🎉🎉🎉
Stopped sugar immediately, no withdrawal at all. I had sugar on everything, in drinks, ate sweets every other hour,no problem at all removing it completely, same day...stopped completely. I am now very careful following keto, berries are now my only candy, go for it
Fruits have fructose, so you're still getting your sugar hit. It's not processed, but it's still sugar. I didn't have withdrawal s when I was on 1-5 grams of fructose a day, but when I quit.. The withdrawal happened.

Actually I thought the process of eliminating sugar in my diet was easy and most importantly very effective. No diet was working for me but by reading labels, not cheating and being diligent at eliminating sugar I was able to lose 30 pounds. I'm now about 8 months into this healthy lifestyle and no going back

Read it to understand how we get sick and the reasons why we've been kept in the dark about it. Better yet gift a copy of the book to your doctor who will be enlightened, like me, about the history and latest science that Dr. Lustig has brilliantly laid out for us to easily digest. He helps us understand the key mechanisms that are making and keeping us sick, how we got here, and gives practical steps to help educate our patients, loved ones and ourselves so that we can prevent and reverse the many chronic metabolic conditions that plague our society today. A very important read for us all.

Some people view him as aggressive but I think their just not accustom to honesty. I love how he tells it like it is and hope he continues doin it for a long long time. Yes. People who don't read much don't understand the economy of words. Highly articulate and intelligent people just know the value of the words they speak, so they don't see the point cluttering it with emotions (+ or -) or unnecessary politeness. He covered SO much ground in this podcast only because he didn't waste his words.
@@MarieMinton according to Dr. Lustig, there is a difference between subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. his belly fat is a metabolically healthy type of fat. states that 20% of obese people are metabolically healthy.
I had really enjoyed listening to the doctor explaining how sugar affected our system. I totally agree with him about us being a sugarholic. Sugar to me is just like crack. It causes you to crave it.We we’re taught to love it by the adults in the beginning of our lives. The parents would say, “ ummm, yum that’s good.’’ Then we are hooked for life. I wonder, can a diabetic person sustain from sugar without getting sick? Usually, some kind of sweetness has to be used to help stabilize the patient when their glucose level drops.What can one do?

Thanks Dhru for posting this superb interview, much appreciated over here in the UK where we have a huge problem with obesity, cardio-vascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, mental health problems and Alzheimer's/dementia. I have recently converted to a diet with higher protein, reasonable amount of animal fat, fruit and veg, with very low carbs and no processed or sugary foods. Still too early to notice any weight loss but I am feeling sharper mentally and I am sleeping better. Do have some health issues which are being looked into as of today, my normally good blood pressure reading today measured at 155/95, so need to do something about that. Have recently reintroduced plenty of olive oil (extra virgin) and Vitamin D supplement. Dr Lustig was an outstanding guest, so much knowledge and useful information. Many thanks to you both.
Dr Lustig hasn’t been on my radar thus far, but I kept thinking “wow, this guy knows his shit” I can’t believe I watched the entire 2 hours and 41 minutes without any fast forward - in fact, I’m going to watch this interview again to let it sink in and might even get his book! It’s also reassuring to know that I’m on the right track with a whole-food approach to my diet.
I did not fast forward either! By the time I knew it an hour went by fast! I need to get up and go wash my floor! I’ve completely changed my diet to be Lustig approved. Stopped my Pepcid, HgbA1C is down to 5.6, stopping my anti-depressant. My pain is GONE. A year and a half ago I couldn’t walk because of pain and inflammation. I couldn’t lift my right arm above my head. I can’t believe how much better I am.
i quit sugar for (3) months had the dts, the jangles, shivers and super head aches fin the beginning. after about (3) months I lost a few pounds, my headaches stopped, and i was less jangly. I no linger drink soft drinks, fruit juices or anything like this. now i fund that using pasta, breads, dairy and certain vegetables increase my suger cravings which they never, ever did before the lack of sugar!
I know I might sound base, but I like it when highly educated lecturers do the mild "cuss", because it gives the presentation a conversational and casual feel. Dr. Lustig is as addictive as sugar, because he explains clearly to a layman while using the correct scientific terms. I love listening to his lectures while I work. I have been carnivore for over a year now and feel like I can bench a mountain, so these talks about sugar and processed foods keep me focused on maintaining this lifestyle....kinda like seeing your ex on Facebook reinforcing your belief that you dodged a bullet. 🤣
Amazing info Dhru. Thank you for interviewing this fantastic individual. He is a wealth of knowledge. I am sugar-free and I eat real food. I mostly eat red meat but sometimes pork or chicken, blackberries, eggs, and table cream in my coffee. Nothing else. I am down 35 pounds and all my arthritis in my hands and ankles went away. I sleep better. I am mentally sharper. My digestion issues disappeared as well. My fasting glucose 6 months ago was 20 and my a1c was 14. My eyesight, near and far were damaged from the sugar. Everything was getting blurry day by day. Now, my glucose is stable and in a healthy range even though I stopped the Metformin after 30 days of being sugar-free. I will get my a1c & fasting IR checked at the end of September to confirm. I am almost 3 months sugar-free.
@nancejack56 yes. My eyesight went back to normal. I have now lost 50 pounds and feel great. My metabolic health has improved to normal levels. I still only eat one main meal late evening with a snack close to my meal. My meals are just meat. Mainly rib steaks. Sometimes pork back ribs or bacon and eggs. Very little sugar in my diet. The odd time I have sugar in my coffee. Otherwise I eat some blueberries once or twice a week. I eat seeds and nut and enjoy cream and cheese. No bread, no rice, no pasta, no processed food. Sounds difficult but living with metabolic syndrome is much harder to live and deal with.
That’s great news! I’m not sure if I feel comfortable doing mainly meat because I love veggies.. I eat tons of chicken.. eggs hard boiled, but binge on sugar at night.. I can really tell with my eye, body fat, inflammation too., redness on face.. I’m 68
@nancejack56 all my swelling and inflammation disappeared. My digestion has never been better. I eat only baked cauliflower in avocado oil with a tiny bit of salt and pepper. All raw veggies I gave up as i always had issues digesting raw veggies. Love raw veggies but can't eat them.
Another great interview with Dr Lustig. With belly fat, what is the risk for people who are having fat “removed” by these freezing mechanisms I see spas advertising now…if the belly fat, visceral fat, drains back thru the portal vein to the liver and these people are killing those cells in mass, with this freezing technique, then that seems like an incredibly dangerous thing to do in that it would overload the liver?
Dr. Robert Lustig, for lack of a better word, is a genius, bordering on the lines of an angel. Every podcast I've listened to since IS A CALORIE A CALORIE - which was a game changer for me and got me 25+ KGS lighter and body fat to 15%, before I fell off the bandwagon and steered off the reservation. I'm human, after all. Anyway, now at 18.4% Body Fat, contemplating getting back to the PALEO protocol. One funny and educative that comes to mind is my consumption of Sodas - cola in my part of the world. I was that guy who was buying a 1500 ml bottle of cola daily and only consuming 500 ml TOPS. The rest was being consumed by the family and I was constantly taking the rap for being a SODA JUNKIE 😝 So, did Atkins in 2003 and question 8 on the questionnaire was - Do you consume Soda? And the answer was YES. Do you consume Soda for the SWEETNESS? The FIZZ? OR BOTH? I had never thought about it that way. Opened up a can of Club Soda - Carbonated Water - and took a deep swig. And I was weaned off soda / cola, for good. Have I had Cola in 20 years? Of course yes. How many? Probably 100 cans in 20 years. Which makes it 5 cans annually. This question should be posed by the good Doctor to the general population. EVEN IF 1 PERSON can benefit from this thought process, I would consider myself Blessed.

About 40 years ago I decided that soda pop just made me thirstier( and now, as we know:heavier!) I switched to plain seltzer and found my drink for life. I'm here for the FIZZ!
Funny thing is - not new to OMAD - One Meal A Day - and it ALWAYS worked. Tried it from 3 months to a year at one go and always seen results. Positively one of THE best health interviews I’ve ever heard. I understood quite a bit from many other articles, books. videos, and podcasts that I’ve been exposed to in the past and recently. I’m more motivated than ever to continue to make the changes I need to now that I’m middle aged. Phenomenal content.
I work as a QMA (qualified medication aide) at a local nursing home and I chart vitals everyday. 23 years ago the average body temperature when I took vitals was 98.6 and the average body temperature now in 2023 is 97. 4 or lower. I myself find this odd. And this was the case even before Covid 19.
One of the best interviews of Dr. Lustig, combining the medical and the practical. And I liked Dhru’s comments and questions - a very collaborative interviewing style.
4 months ago I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes. My HbA1c (blood glucose) was 73 mmol/mol. Since then I have moved to a mainly wholefoods diet with little processed food and no UPF. I eat many organic things where possible. I eat strictly pumpernickel for bread, no refined carbs, no potatoes, ZERO added sugar and control carb portions to around 50g per meal. I enjoy cheese, fatty natural yoghurt, whole milk and snack on nuts, which keeps my fat intake at a good level. Kimchi, sauerkraut and yoghurt help my microbiome. I have also done a morning workout (exercise bike and weights) 4-5 times a week and have taken 500mg of Metformin twice a day. In 4 months I have lost 17.5Kg/2St 10lbs/38.5lbs and my blood test results today show a HbA1c of 36mmol/mol, which is amazing!
I’m in the midst of this sugar letting. It’s hard. I had cravings yesterday that ultimately I gave into. Everyday is a challenge. Believe in yourself, value your health and stick it out because sugar is the “common denominator”for disease and dysfunction and not in any good way for our health. Wow that is awesome!!! I was diagnosed with fibroids and faced limited options besides medication too. Instead of accepting the standard treatment, I took control of my journey. I changed my diet eating fruits and vegetables only I included turmeric based teas that were decaf and good for female hormones, I focused on my spiritual and emotional energy for 90 days. When I returned for a hormone test the fibroid was gone, and my hormone levels were excellent! Healthy foods definitely influence your health!
Last time I was in , I asked my dr to do a fasting insulin and she snapped at me and said “no! You don’t need it! You are not diabetic.” I was pre diabetic, high BP, retina wrinkle in past and went keto. First two gone and wrinkle not progressing! Still want insulin resistant test! What to do!? I think you are right saying it is most important test. By the way I went keto on my own and now want carnivore at age 78!
You can get it done at quest diagnostics without a referral. You just purchase the test online and schedule an appointment online and walk in and get it done, no questions asked. I paid for mine with my HSA money because I didn't want to deal with going to the doctors and filing a claim with insurance.
@@MichaelMa84That is only allowed in certain states. In NJ it is not allowed. I can’t even go to Pennsylvania where it is allowed because my I.D. Is NJ. And my doctor also refuses to order it. It’s insane what the government and medical industrial complex do to keep us sick.

Sugar withdrawal is difficult. I’ve been off sugar for 3 days and im really struggling. No carbs but veggies and milk . It’s difficult. I also still use sweetener and unfortunately haven’t got off of drinking diet soda . That’s my next goal.
Carbs turn into glucose so be careful how much you eat. I use a powder that has potassium and most importantly magnesium. Make sure you have enough salt also you will get through the withdrawals.

Thank you. I ate cookies for breakfast both yesterday and today. The joints in my fingers hurt and I feel terrible. I've watched Dr. Lustig before, but I have learned more in the first 42 minutes of this interview than I've ever learned in my life. I still don't want to stop eating the cookies. I totally changed my dietary life three years ago to eliminate all sugars and toxins. Zero ultra processed foods. I Was invited to speak at a Vietnam veterans social meeting… the host insisted that I partake of the free food. After much insistence I gave in and ate a mini cup cake. Big mistake. I could feel the inflammatory sugar going through my body for over three hours after. Reconfirmed my original commitment to myself and my wife.

This exact thing happened to me over this past weekend. I was in Saint Louis and I promised my sister I would get some gooey butter cake . Needless to say I got it and ate sugar and bread all weekend. By Tuesday I felt like I had the flu. It’s was bad . Back to carnivore .😅

Since discovering Dr Lustig’s videos I’ve drastically cut my high sugar intake . Whenever I weaken and eat sweet stuff within a day I experience pain in my fingers from my early arthritis. This is proof of it’s inflammatory effect as I am otherwise pain free.
I totally changed my lifestyle two years ago I eliminate all ultra processed foods and sugar out of my diet, I workout 4-5 days a week, the only thing I drink is water. I reversed high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high insulin, got my vitamin D from 20 to 70 and I’m down 80lbs. The food is really a big part of the problem, thanks for sharing.

Tomorrow is a month without sugar, refined sugar, processed food, and seeded oils. That first week and a half was vety rough. But, my moods are better and I'm less anxious and significantly calmer. Wow!!!

By cutting out sugar & refined carbohydrates, in one year i went from (here's the doctors remarks) "your LDL is too high, you are plugging up, you gotta stay on statins" to "...these are the best cholesterol panel numbers i have ever seen!" He's been a doc for over 30 years.

I can confirm that the first 7 days of sugar withdrawal are hell, I had to go through withdrawal 7 years ago due to health reasons. Going cold turkey is hard, but so worth it! 7 years on I feel, and am so much healthier with much more energy. Cutting out sugar feels like it has rejuvenated me by at least 20 years.

Our ancestors only ate honey if they stumbled across a hive, they didnt consume it daily or farm bees. The amino acid L-Glutamine helps reduce sugar cravings.

I have watched this video 2 times and bought Dr Lustig book Metabolic for a friend with ALS and 1 for me. I changed my diet, very low carb, dark leafy greens, berries, celery, wild caught sockeye salmon, chicken, green olives, avocados, extra virgin olive oil, pecans, walnuts, LeGruyere cheese from Switzerland, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cucumber, bone broth, baby bella mushrooms, red cabbage, lemon ginger tea, lemons for water, cinnamon, and apple cider vinegar. Lost 15 pounds in 2 months and feeling so good. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes A1C was 7.5 I am going to heal my entire body with food. Thank you for the podcasts and book. I knew a lot about food since 1979 and then didn't apply it and got fat. Now I am healing

I was a super addict. I could not say no. Milkshakes daily. Understanding how harmful Sugar is and knowing it only feels good on my Toung. I have been sugar free for 50 days. I love food again. My tastebuds are amazingly sensitive. Veggies taste better than I could have ever imagined. I have lost 40 lbs. Weight is not a true barometer, but I have only eaten natural foods and meat. Understanding it was an Addition helped me understand how to control what I eat. Reading labels are a habit that was fun and shocking, but my wife and I are finally in control. All other diets don't treat addition and a ton of diet food has sugar leading to more addictions with a calorie deficit. There are no shortcuts. FEED YOUR GUT PROTECT YOUR LIVER!!!

I had forgotten til I read your post that food actually did taste sweeter after quitting sugar; this was forty (!) years ago and my health is good now and if I want something sweet I will occasionally take pure maple syrup or pure honey and just a teaspoonful is enough... I found there is a condition which develops when one consumes too much sugar and there are remedies to help break the sugar habit which a doctor or a pharmacist can explain which can reduce the craving when consuming lots of sugar has become a habit. I feel so good now I would never go back to what I had been consuming since childhood... mountains of sugar!!! and my teeth appreciate this too!

I was first diagnosed at age 8 with juvenile Idiopathic Rheumatoid arthritis and 4 years ago I was disabled and approved for a scooter and was looking to get a wheelchair, but my doing the AIP Autoimmune Protocal Paleo diet and lifestyle plus me doing time restricted eating of 16/8 where I stop eating by 8 pm and I don't eat again till noon the next day I was able to bring all my Rheumatoid Arthritis disease activity and symptoms down to zero. So I am no longer disabled. Also my grandmother had been an invalid from RA since she had been 16 and my mom has RA and is disabled from it with deformed hands and feet. And I am the first one to halt the RA. I am also no longer on my heavy duty RA meds of Methotrexate and Enbrel. I went back to school and now help others with Autoimmune diseases to lower disease activity and symptoms. I only eat real whole nutrient dense foods so cutting out the sugar and cutting out processed and packaged foods absolutely make a life changing difference. I wish we all could wake up out of the matrix and what the food industry has done and the pharmacy companies and our healthcare system has done.

My mom took care of her mom (my grandmother) for 23 years. She had Alzheimers. The last 11 years she was bedridden. She died at home. Now my mom now has dementia. Seeing how my own health has kept deteriorating (gaining weight, inflammation, arthritis, bloating, acid reflux, constant tiredness, brain fog, constant hunger) and I am only 52...I have decided to do something about my health. After much researching, have been doing TRF and IF for the last 2 years. Most of the symptoms I had are gone. Along with the IF I have also been working on fixing my diet, eating much less processed foods, working on eating less carbs and reducing much sugar intake. I feel the difference. I am so glad I decided to change and do something about my health. I have always excercised and still do. But the change has come because of the dietary changes I have done.

**A little story**
My MIL is bedridden. She’s in a home and goes from the bed to the recliner. The caregivers move her around in a wheelchair. If they don’t move her, she doesn’t move. (She’s obese, diabetic, has dementia, possibly schizophrenia among other diseases). She’s chronically inflamed and cries almost daily because of the joint pains. The faculty is also culpable because they are all too happy to provide her with the various junk foods she requests. It’s a “fancy” one that spoils the residents. My partner sees and knows all this, yet he’s not making healthy lifestyle changes. I grieve for him because he’s heading down the same road his mom is on. For years he’s had some of the same diseases she has, but isn’t motivated to eat better or exercise. I’m so saddened by this.
To anyone who may be wondering, like me, what this 'plee' could have meant by TRF - it's Time Restricted Feeding. I had to look it up for 20 minutes because there are other expansions for it. IF usually stands for intermittent fasting.

I am on day 4 of no sugar. Also quit using equal in my coffee. Definitely taking some getting used to. My main problem was ice cream; I would eat like 3 bowls every night. And chocolate. I would literally buy a bag of chocolate and eat the entire bag in one sitting. The insanity had to stop. Lost 2.5 lbs so far

Dr Lustig is an American HERO! His book "Metabolical" has been a game changer for me. I'm excited to learn he has designed a template to create healthier processed food. There is no way we can escape processed food...even health nuts like me. The blanched almond flour I use to make my delicious coconut pancakes from scratch.... is highly processed. My biggest concern is NOT sugar, but glyphosate. I found out that I have a high amount of glyphosate in my body.....which is Crazy...given I only eat organic, pasture raised meat, wild caught fish...etc...etc...etc. I suspect it is coming from the expensive wine I drink occasionally. I read that they tested 100 CA wines, and all had glyphosate. I stopped drinking wine....and will be tested again soon. It has become so hard to protect my health from the toxins in food and our environment!

I'm 61 and I haven't felt my old self for the past 3yrs and seemed to observe accelerated aging in my skin and hair. I started six weeks ago by going totally off sugar and simple carbs like rice, pasta, maize and all processed food although I have small amounts of bread and potato. I also battled the first week and felt like I was separated from my fix but I feel a lot better. I've started losing weight too. Now that I've started, I'm hoping to clean up my diet even more and to work towards better health now that I'm older. I'm still using a little Stevia but hoping to stop that soon too. As a post-menopausal woman, I'm focused on quality of life now.
Carbohydrate ages you. Aging is largely related to glycation, which is caused whenever you consume carbs. Fasting can help undo this damage but you must also lower your carbs if you want to be healthy! Some benefits of doing occasional extended fasting: High blood pressure is lowered to normal levels very quickly while fasting.
Fibrosis/scarring is reversed over time.
Fasting increases nitric oxide release.
Fasting restores NAD+ to healthy levels.
Vitamin D plasma levels are increased as fasting improves metabolic health, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy.

After 72 hours or more fasted, your body recycles up to 1/3 of all immune bodies, rejuvenating your entire immune system.
Fasting can help with MS, Depression, BPD, Autism and seizures.
Fasting reduces pain and anxiety by stimulating the endocannabinoid system in a similar way to CBD oil.
Thymus is regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. The thymus also plays a vital role in fighting cancer.
Weight loss from daily caloric restriction has 1/4 to 1/3 of the weight lost as lean tissue while many studies show fat loss from 36 h fasts without losing any lean tissue! The hunger hormone ghrelin also lowers with extended fasting and rises from dieting.
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus.
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state.
What breaks a fast? Anything with protein or carbohydrates in it will break a fast. Most teas and herbs are OK. Most supplements and meds will either break ketosis directly or contain a filler that will. Many meds are dangerous to take while fasting.
Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it when the fast is broken by increasing lutenizing hormone. Fasting also increases insulin sensitivity, which helps with muscle building.
Fasts of 36-96 will not affect short term female fertility or affect menstrual cycle. They also may increase long term fertility, especially in women with PCOS.
The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again!
Does the body preferentially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, except for brief periods of very intense exercise, your body mainly burns fats in the form of free fatty acids. Your brain also prefers to burn ketones at a rate of around 2.5 to 1 when they are available in equal quantity to glucose.
Fasting stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells
Lowering insulin via fasting virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body.
When not in ketosis, the brain can only burn carbohydrate, which produces a great deal of damaging ROS the brain has to deal with.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention!
Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth. This can help a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
In fact, the biochemical regulator of BDNF production is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting.
When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells, destroying them. Senescent cells are responsible for many of the effects of aging and are a root cause of the development of cancer.
A fasting mimicking diet for 3-5 days in a row also provides many of the same benefits as water fasting. FMD usually has 200-800 calories, under 18 g of protein and extremely low carbs.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice.

Stevia in its real form is green so I'm wondering if they bleach that I'd rather buy the plant & dry it & use it
@@aminaschmiat6476 I checked that and found that there are about 50 different strains of Stevia and some of them tend to be somewhat toxic and others are simply not palatable so that only certain strains are good to use as sweetner. A Swiss company (Sweetlife) are experts at drying and packaging natural sweetners. It is made under their licence and available in my country under the Selati label. It containes only some cellulose gum and lactose but is by far the nicest tasting stevia to use.
@@LTPottenger 100%. I'm trying to have a little carb portion only once a day as opposed to having it at every meal. I've done my first 36hr fast and I'm hoping to work up to 3 day water fasts once a month at least. I'm starting to understand all this. Fortunately I'm still in fairly good health and not using any chronic meds. I was showing signs of moving towards being insulin resistant though so I'm motivated to fix this.
I did LCHF almost 3 years but still battled sugar addiction. Finally started Carnivore 3 months ago and since the end of the first week in I no longer craved it and still haven’t. I still can’t really believe it but it is true and I feel so good and healthy
Back in 2007 I was pregnant with my 3rd child. I tested positive for gestational diabetes and had to take my glucose leveks 5 times a day, keep a record of every food I ate in a low-sugar journal, and got a weekly stress test for baby every single Friday. I was starving myself by keeping to 15g net carbs (on a vegetarian diet) but my glucose numbers were double what they should have been. My dietitian said I was the tiniest person she ever had in her office and for some reason (likely stress) my body was producing sugars that I wasn't consuming through food. I was prescribed insulin pills (which I refused to take) and eventually gave birth full term weighing 107lbs ... baby was 6lbs 15oz. I left the hospital at 100.5 lbs and as soon as my placentia was delivered my blood sugars went back to normal and I ordered everything I could off of that hospital menu! Lol Crazy thing is my next 3 pregnancies were borderline GD but I managed my glucose with strict diet and eventually started to eat meat and then eventually keto. All kids were born healthy and I continue to eat low-carb and almost zero processed food (birthday cake pass) ... also I no longer drink alcohol. Just like alcohol, I can't think of any health benefits we get while consuming sugar. My point is that it's TRUE our bodies produce enough sugars for us naturally and we don't need to supplement them in any processed form. My dessert treat is a piece of fruit and a cup of coffee or tea - sugar free. 😉
You can’t think of any health benefits eating sugar , here’s one , the brain is the only carbohydrate dependant organ in the body , the brain needs sugar , you need sugar to live , hope that helps

Finally made it through this video after 2 weeks...listening to it on my way to and from work, and as I fell asleep each night. I always started about 10-30 mins prior to where I left causing me to hear several items over and over and over. Something kept telling to listen all the way through and I'm so glad I did especially hearing the part about my large midsection. At 1:47:59, BAM! My belly fat comes from stress! I've heard this before, but for whatever reason, this time I HEARD IT! At age 52, I am now determined to find a way to greatly reduce my stress including more sleep, less screen time (big and small), and ridding myself of toxic people and situations. It is my personal responsibility to do just that. I'll also slowly fix the way I eat which I'm sure will work itself out when I greatly reduce the toxicity in my life. Thank you for all this info that a pcp never speaks about. I am 73 who needs to do sugar detox definitely. I am really motivated after listening. When my son was born in Austria in 1980. I was in great shape. The Austrians eat bacon eggs etc Had at that time less obesity cholesterol problems . I had fullfat real cheese meat veggies sauerkraut bread fruit. Some great chocolate. I had such rich breast milk they wAnted me to donate. I walked no car. People listen to these two intelligent people. I will research alk that was discussed. Thank you for your contributions
I honestly believe that Dr. Lustig is the single most important person to listen to if you want to restore your health. Science and medicine are the foundation of what he knows and the depth of knowledge is tremendous. Food is medicine. You need to understand this to accept what needs to be done.
Ever since I quit sugar (for the most part) about three years ago, I feel 100% better. It seemed like I was always having some kind of ailment every couple of weeks I would have somewhere different in my body. I'm pretty sure it was the sugar causing inflammation, mostly in my joints and tendons. I also had the beginnings of arthritis in my shoulder and hip joints. But that's all gone now and being 50 I now feel better than I did when I was 30! Dr Lustig knows what he speaks of.

I started 90 days ago, one week in and got my doctor to do an A1C, fasting insulin. She did it but stated she did not know how to interpret it. My levels came back, A1C 5.7 which is I believe high normal, she said my insulin was low at 15 below 25. I stopped all sugar and anything from a box, at present mostly carnivore with minimal dairy. Mental health has greatly improved, the need to exercise and move is crazy, lost 40 pounds and feeling sexy again. Stopping sugar wow, was so not with energy first few days I was not a sweet tooth but ya you will miss it. I feel great again at 67 years young, I bought the book comes tomorrow also bought hard read but great ketogenic by nutrition network and dr Berry and Kim Howerton common sense labs, thanks for the great work you both do

Thanks for hosting Dr. Lustig, he is truly on to something here, as are other brave doctors, researchers, and dieticians. Minute 31:00-32:00, I couldn't agree more! Insulin causes mitogenesis, cell proliferation! As a 65 year old male suffering from BPH (enlarged prostate) for over two decades and trying everything under the sun short of surgical (horror) procedures, I can attest! A few months into a keto diet has reversed my BPH symptoms. I do something now I haven't done in over a decade, sleep the night through without having to get up and urinate. My sleep is better, sex is better, allergies are better, dry eye, inflammation, and on and on. Keep your insulin down people, it is what's killing you slowly!
right on, bro. i also had BPH & a PSA score of 7.5. started low carb, no processed food, no sugar, no dairy. a year and a half later, my PSA is 4.5. all negative symptoms gone. also took broccoli sprout extract as per Rhonda Patrick.
Something else I noticed I honestly think it gives a boost to self esteem to NOT be hooked on that white powder!!! I feel free and my health has had a big boost too.
Got diagnosed with sever nonalcoholic fatty liver,kidney,gallstones and prediabetes lately. Following Dr lustigs advise. After a week of almost no fructose intake, drowsiness is gone, more enregized, GERD is not bethering me anymore. Looking forward to losing my liver fat. Thank you dr Lustig!

Awesome! I’m making changes tomorrow one baby step at a time. I’m 71 year old female with diabetes. It’s a whole new way of life but I know that I can do better in cutting out sugar. No family support but I have to do this for myself. I have lower back and knee pain which is caused by lack of exercise and need to improve cutting out carbs etc. I found this video scrolling cause I have problem sleeping.

As someone who lives in Kuwait, I was surprised to hear Dr. Lustig talking about KDD - at first, I though I must have heard wrong! But I'm really glad to hear what KDD is doing, and I think a lot of their customers will be happy about this.
Back in 2019 already a few years into menopause postmenopausal I guess we would call it. I lost 34 pounds. My hormones were out of whack. My joints ached. I was not eating well due to the loss of my husband four years before. I went to a homeo pathic center for women called the Be balanced hormonal weight loss center. They put me on a 30 day Boot Camp diet, eliminating sugar, refined carbohydrates, and limiting dairy to check for food sensitivities. There’s four phases to this plan so by the time I hit the fourth phase I was re-introducing certain foods to see how I would feel after I ate them. Long story short here it is 2023. I’ve maintained my weight within 3 pounds and I feel fantastic at 56 years of age. I feel better now than I did at 40. I don’t eat any food out of a box. I eat plant-based and mainly carnivore. I have my blood work, checked twice a year, and so far so good! It was the best move I ever made. In the beginning it seems like a lot of work. It takes a lot of planning and you have to be a bit organized when you go to the grocery store and not participate in impulse, consumer driven buying. In regards to the change of diet it’s like taking a house and converting it from oil heat to natural gas. Your re-orientating your body to burn fat instead of sugar and carbohydrates. There is a physical reaction that will go on in your body while making this transition but you will get over the hump . I’ve learned a lot from Dr. Robert Lustig. I’ve been listening to him for years and reading his books. The more you educate yourself and learn how these foods, sugar and refined carbohydrates affect your body the more you will want to stay away from them. The motto I live by is that I don’t eat any food that has a television commercial. Any food that is advertised on TV should probably not be consumed.
JC I'm 53 and things are starting to crash down around me. Post-menoausal and on more meds now than I've ever been. Thyroid, estradiol, prilosec, and antidepressants.
I've kicked sugar before but to think about doing it right this minute actually terrifies me. I go through different levels of sugar addiction and when it's high I can't even think of stopping even though I know I'll feel better.
I'll get there again, sooner rather than later, but staying off it is hard!

Excellent way to evaluate your meal, simply rethinking its nutritional compound…is it dessert? That thought process can be used as a tool. Remembering dessert is ok once in awhile, just not everyday for breakfast, lunch & dinner! It’s easiest for me to eat whole foods to completely avoid the hassle of having to read labels, but most importantly eating in a healthy manner. I love the motto, “Eat to live, not live to eat”.

Individuals CAN fix the food problem but they will not. It's all about money. I have NEVER purchased a bag of potato chips in my life. If EVERYONE stopped buying chips companies would stop producing them. Everyone of us has the ability to change the system. The people that don't suffer the consequences of their actions. Just don't buy the stuff. I'm 74 years old and the last time I was at a doctors office was in 1969.

@@atiyashabbir102 I have always been thin. I am only 5'8" tall. Thin , shorter people live longer in general. My mom lived to 94 years old. She was small. Try to eat less. Excercise. Do NOT drink soda or juice. I eat "mostly " plant based but I do eat some healthy meat and eggs. Do NOT eat junk foods. Try not to eat anything in a box or a can. I a. 74 years old and I have never had any aches or pains. Never had acid reflux, bloating, constipation. I can't ever remember blowing my nose. One $4 prescription in my life (antibiotic for root canal). One sick day from work in 52 years of working. No secret or magic pill.
@@atiyashabbir102 I started exercising when I was 11 years old. I have never smoked or done illegal drugs. I worked way too much (10 hour days and Saturdays) so maybe keeping active helps. I never ate really bad. Never liked cookies, candy or sweets. Always ate decent and now that I am retired I eat REALLY clean. No real great secret. My mother lived to be 94 years old and the only prescription I remember her taking was a bone strengthening pill. I don't take any medication at all.
it's harder these days as there is sugar and other addictive ingredients in almost everything .
babies and kids grow up on soda and junk food so it's harder for them to break it .

I don’t drink that often, but man I will never give it up and I am a much nicer person knowing there’s alcahol in the world! 😇 I know several people who drink who are in their 100’s (one who is 104 and she has only just gone into a nursing home. I know people in their 60’s who got heart attacks from eating carbs, potatoes, porridge etc I’d rather have a few drinks! But overall the people I see with cancer in their 30’s absolutely 40’s are clean living porridge and spud eaters… I would ban porridge and potatoes as they are eaten every day. The kids in this house can have porridge as a treat at night on the weekends with heavy cream!!! 🎉🎉🎉
Stopped sugar immediately, no withdrawal at all. I had sugar on everything, in drinks, ate sweets every other hour,no problem at all removing it completely, same day...stopped completely. I am now very careful following keto, berries are now my only candy, go for it

Fruits have fructose, so you're still getting your sugar hit. It's not processed, but it's still sugar. I didn't have withdrawal s when I was on 1-5 grams of fructose a day, but when I quit.. The withdrawal happened.

Actually I thought the process of eliminating sugar in my diet was easy and most importantly very effective. No diet was working for me but by reading labels, not cheating and being diligent at eliminating sugar I was able to lose 30 pounds. I'm now about 8 months into this healthy lifestyle and no going back

Yes. People who don't read much don't understand the economy of words. I had really enjoyed listening to the doctor explaining how sugar affected our system. I totally agree with him about us being a sugarholic. Sugar to me is just like crack. It causes you to crave it.We we’re taught to love it by the adults in the beginning of our lives. The parents would say, “ ummm, yum that’s good.’’ Then we are hooked for life. I wonder, can a diabetic person sustain from sugar without getting sick? Usually, some kind of sweetness has to be used to help stabilize the patient when their glucose level drops.What can one do?

Thanks Dhru for posting this superb interview, much appreciated over here in the UK where we have a huge problem with obesity, cardio-vascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, mental health problems and Alzheimer's/dementia. I have recently converted to a diet with higher protein, reasonable amount of animal fat, fruit and veg, with very low carbs and no processed or sugary foods. Still too early to notice any weight loss but I am feeling sharper mentally and I am sleeping better. Do have some health issues which are being looked into as of today, my normally good blood pressure reading today measured at 155/95, so need to do something about that. Have recently reintroduced plenty of olive oil (extra virgin) and Vitamin D supplement. Dr Lustig was an outstanding guest, so much knowledge and useful information. Many thanks to you both.

Dr Lustig hasn’t been on my radar thus far, but I kept thinking “wow, this guy knows his shit” I can’t believe I watched the entire 2 hours and 41 minutes without any fast forward - in fact, I’m going to watch this interview again to let it sink in and might even get his book! It’s also reassuring to know that I’m on the right track with a whole-food approach to my diet.

I’ve completely changed my diet to be Lustig approved. Stopped my Pepcid, HgbA1C is down to 5.6, stopping my anti-depressant. My pain is GONE. A year and a half ago I couldn’t walk because of pain and inflammation. I couldn’t lift my right arm above my head. I can’t believe how much better I am.

i quit sugar for (3) months had the dts, the jangles, shivers and super head aches fin the beginning. after about (3) months I lost a few pounds, my headaches stopped, and i was less jangly. I no linger drink soft drinks, fruit juices or anything like this. now i fund that using pasta, breads, dairy and certain vegetables increase my suger cravings which they never, ever did before the lack of sugar!

I know I might sound base, but I like it when highly educated lecturers do the mild "cuss", because it gives the presentation a conversational and casual feel. Dr. Lustig is as addictive as sugar, because he explains clearly to a layman while using the correct scientific terms. I love listening to his lectures while I work.
I have been carnivore for over a year now and feel like I can bench a mountain, so these talks about sugar and processed foods keep me focused on maintaining this lifestyle....kinda like seeing your ex on Facebook reinforcing your belief that you dodged a bullet. 🤣

Amazing info Dhru. Thank you for interviewing this fantastic individual. He is a wealth of knowledge. I am sugar-free and I eat real food. I mostly eat red meat but sometimes pork or chicken, blackberries, eggs, and table cream in my coffee. Nothing else. I am down 35 pounds and all my arthritis in my hands and ankles went away. I sleep better. I am mentally sharper. My digestion issues disappeared as well. My fasting glucose 6 months ago was 20 and my a1c was 14. My eyesight, near and far were damaged from the sugar. Everything was getting blurry day by day. Now, my glucose is stable and in a healthy range even though I stopped the Metformin after 30 days of being sugar-free. I will get my a1c & fasting IR checked at the end of September to confirm. I am almost 3 months sugar-free.

@nancejack56 yes. My eyesight went back to normal. I have now lost 50 pounds and feel great. My metabolic health has improved to normal levels. I still only eat one main meal late evening with a snack close to my meal. My meals are just meat. Mainly rib steaks. Sometimes pork back ribs or bacon and eggs. Very little sugar in my diet. The odd time I have sugar in my coffee. Otherwise I eat some blueberries once or twice a week. I eat seeds and nut and enjoy cream and cheese. No bread, no rice, no pasta, no processed food. Sounds difficult but living with metabolic syndrome is much harder to live and deal with.
That’s great news! I’m not sure if I feel comfortable doing mainly meat because I love veggies.. I eat tons of chicken.. eggs hard boiled, but binge on sugar at night.. I can really tell with my eye, body fat, inflammation too., redness on face.. I’m 68
@nancejack56 all my swelling and inflammation disappeared. My digestion has never been better. I eat only baked cauliflower in avocado oil with a tiny bit of salt and pepper. All raw veggies I gave up as i always had issues digesting raw veggies. Love raw veggies but can't eat them.

Another great interview with Dr Lustig. With belly fat, what is the risk for people who are having fat “removed” by these freezing mechanisms I see spas advertising now…if the belly fat, visceral fat, drains back thru the portal vein to the liver and these people are killing those cells in mass, with this freezing technique, then that seems like an incredibly dangerous thing to do in that it would overload the liver?

Dr. Robert Lustig, for lack of a better word, is a genius, bordering on the lines of an angel.
Every podcast I've listened to since IS A CALORIE A CALORIE - which was a game changer for me and got me 25+ KGS lighter and body fat to 15%, before I fell off the bandwagon and steered off the reservation. I'm human, after all.
Anyway, now at 18.4% Body Fat, contemplating getting back to the PALEO protocol.
One funny and educative that comes to mind is my consumption of Sodas - cola in my part of the world.
I was that guy who was buying a 1500 ml bottle of cola daily and only consuming 500 ml TOPS. The rest was being consumed by the family and I was constantly taking the rap for being a SODA JUNKIE 😝
So, did Atkins in 2003 and question 8 on the questionnaire was - Do you consume Soda? And the answer was YES.
Do you consume Soda for the SWEETNESS? The FIZZ? OR BOTH?
I had never thought about it that way. Opened up a can of Club Soda - Carbonated Water - and took a deep swig.
And I was weaned off soda / cola, for good.
Have I had Cola in 20 years? Of course yes. How many? Probably 100 cans in 20 years. Which makes it 5 cans annually.
This question should be posed by the good Doctor to the general population.
EVEN IF 1 PERSON can benefit from this thought process, I would consider myself Blessed.
Like you, I love these talks from all these experts:Lustig, Jason Fung, Sten Ekberg and many others. I've learned soooo much about food. About 40 years ago I decided that soda pop just made me thirstier( and now, as we know:heavier!) I switched to plain seltzer and found my drink for life. I'm here for the FIZZ!

I work as a QMA (qualified medication aide) at a local nursing home and I chart vitals everyday. 23 years ago the average body temperature when I took vitals was 98.6 and the average body temperature now in 2023 is 97. 4 or lower. I myself find this odd. And this was the case even before Covid 19.

One of the best interviews of Dr. Lustig, combining the medical and the practical. And I liked Dhru’s comments and questions - a very collaborative interviewing style.
4 months ago I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes. My HbA1c (blood glucose) was 73 mmol/mol. Since then I have moved to a mainly wholefoods diet with little processed food and no UPF. I eat many organic things where possible. I eat strictly pumpernickel for bread, no refined carbs, no potatoes, ZERO added sugar and control carb portions to around 50g per meal. I enjoy cheese, fatty natural yoghurt, whole milk and snack on nuts, which keeps my fat intake at a good level. Kimchi, sauerkraut and yoghurt help my microbiome. I have also done a morning workout (exercise bike and weights) 4-5 times a week and have taken 500mg of Metformin twice a day. In 4 months I have lost 17.5Kg/2St 10lbs/38.5lbs and my blood test results today show a HbA1c of 36mmol/mol, which is amazing!
I’m in the midst of this sugar letting. It’s hard. I had cravings yesterday that ultimately I gave into. Everyday is a challenge. Believe in yourself, value your health and stick it out because sugar is the “common denominator”for disease and dysfunction and not in any good way for our health. Thanks for this conversation and Dr. lustig is a national treasure.

I was diagnosed with fibroids and faced limited options besides medication too. Instead of accepting the standard treatment, I took control of my journey.
I changed my diet eating fruits and vegetables only I included turmeric based teas that were decaf and good for female hormones, I focused on my spiritual and emotional energy for 90 days. When I returned for a hormone test the fibroid was gone, and my hormone levels were excellent!

Last time I was in , I asked my dr to do a fasting insulin and she snapped at me and said “no! You don’t need it! You are not diabetic.” I was pre diabetic, high BP, retina wrinkle in past and went keto. First two gone and wrinkle not progressing! Still want insulin resistant test! What to do!? I think you are right saying it is most important test. By the way I went keto on my own and now want carnivore at age 78!

You can get it done at quest diagnostics without a referral. You just purchase the test online and schedule an appointment online and walk in and get it done, no questions asked. I paid for mine with my HSA money because I didn't want to deal with going to the doctors and filing a claim with insurance.

And your questions always have the listener in mind ; breaking things down in terms everyone can understand. Even your voice is perfect for this, grounding any not annoying. lol. Sugar withdrawal is difficult. I’ve been off sugar for 3 days and im really struggling. No carbs but veggies and milk . It’s difficult. I also still use sweetener and unfortunately haven’t got off of drinking diet soda . That’s my next goal.
Don't bring it in the house, throw out what you do have in the house. And suck it up - you'll realize later what garbage you were ingesting.
Carbs turn into glucose so be careful how much you eat. I use a powder that has potassium and most importantly magnesium. Make sure you have enough salt also you will get through the withdrawals.
