    The pieces that you seem to want to declutter, have negative connotation attached to them. That means every time you pick them up, you get a negative feeling. Just declutter them girl. We want to reach for a piece and feel joy. 💚

      Definitely agree. When decluttering I ask “does this piece make me mad?” (eg doesn’t fit right, don’t like the colour or cut) and “would I choose something else instead of this?”

      OR, if it reminds you of a negative feeling, wear it to something really fun. If it looks great on you, like the dyed sweater, wear it to fun events and change the mood of the garment.

    Alyssa, don’t rush, I regret 90% of my de clutter. ´ Haven’t worn it for a year? Get rid of it. ‘ what a mistake listening to that rule.

    • @elaineroberts7493

      I so agree! I often love something so much when I buy it (usually 2nd hand) that I wear it as often as I can. But the following year, I may not wear it at all - because I’m a little bored with it. Then another year goes by, I rediscover the item and start wanting to wear it again. I also regret some things that I donated, and wish I hadn’t been so hasty,

    • @annakrol6912
      @annakrol6912 2 роки тому +11

      Same!!!! I mean some pieces I had to just buy in my sleep 😂 But years later I still think of so many beautiful classic pieces I deemed boring where the correct name, as I matured, should be timeless quiet elegance. Oh my plum trousers please come back home…..😢

    • @theladynextdoor313
      @theladynextdoor313 2 роки тому +14

      I agree. I like to set items aside (not all of them, a few may actually need to go) and pack them away in a tote with some cedar blocks and come back to them after a year. I’m usually happy to see I still have some of those items! Plus keeping things one size up or down as life (weight changes) happens. Good clothes are harder to come by now with all this made in China fast fashion so hanging onto nicer made things is just smart IMO.

      @@elaineroberts7493 I regret donating things to thrift shops because I volunteer in one. The majority of op shop customers have no appreciation for good clothing and expect to pick up clothes for $2. When I have paid $150 for a dress this is highly offensive to me and I would rather leave it hanging in my closet than let some bogan buy it for $2

And I am so glad you kept the red coat...it may not be one of your chosen colors, but it is definitely 'your color' in that it looks fabulous on you! My best tip is before I go on holiday. I declutter ( sometimes I declutter along the way and make a donation bin in my closet) clothes/ shoes/ accessories etc… I then take them on vacation with me. I wear them in different ways and the things that make me feel good I come back with the rest I donate and come back home lighter or the same ( if I shop. I know this is not for everyone especially since ppl want to look their ultimate best on vacay for pics but I like my clothes they are nice even the things I declutter so I don’t really look frumpy on vacay. This helps a lot with those on a whim purchases.

    Your "umpteen ways to style" a pleated midi skirt is one of the first videos of yours that I saw, and I loved it so much that I bought a pleated midi for myself in silver...and eventually black. To each her own! That was something of yours that I loved but that I wanted in more cool, "me" colors. Both of those were purchased new at retail because I could not find what I wanted in gently used, although I m buying a lot more gently used than I used to. Merci!

    When I have a piece like your white dress, I will typically save it as a template for another garment. I do this with perfect-fitting khakis that get stains or holes: I find another garment that’s similar on sale (or at a thrift shop) that’s about a size too big, take it into the tailor with the old pair of khakis and say “Make these the same as those” and it works every single time.

      Also, a couple of minutes in my brain started imagining a parody skit of this: a woman in a time of personal upheaval (disappointed by love), at 1am with 3rd glass of wine in hand, yelling at a beige sweater/no one in particular "what are you then, a crew neck or a scoop neck? Commit to something!!!" And then moving on to a DIY haircut tutorial... 🤭

    I have just finished my decluttering on the weekend. It seems that there is always something that we need to justify keeping even though we know it's not my style. So after watching your video they are going to another loving home. Thanks for clarifying my thought process.

    Last summer I did the Marie Kondo way on everything in the house.The last half year I have gone constantly deeper into being concious about my closet, taking out some things and added some basics. Now, after seing your Shop your closet twice this week (recorded from last saturday) AND digitalized everything into OPEN WARDROBE, AND landing on three words, I am kind of exhausted. But I think finished. For now. So thanks, I have a great closet to shop from now, starting to see my garnments as my ELEMENTS OF STYLE, juhu :)

    I had a job change and my wardrobe is very relax so I wear jeans daily now that it’s fall. I have two pairs of trouser chino’s that I feel the same way about.
    However I wish I could get rid of all the business casual I acquired the last 2 1/2 years but I’m afraid if I make another career change I will need it again.
    I’m fluctuating in weight but in the opposite direction where I have gained weight.

      😊Yes, even in the best of times, not all of us can rush out & buy 💳 a whole new wardrobe whenever the whim takes us.
      L🤍ve that Alyssa's approach to style definitely leans toward being more integrative on the whole. 😉Tend to think in terms of category clothes: church, office, special, date, play/errands, exercise, etc.
      💰Invested in more formal quality corporate fashion for decades that I refuse to part. Shifted into a more informal lifestyle, but there are times I still want to look authoritative & powerful. Plus, gifted stylists like her cleverly show us how to use classic suit pieces🖤 in more casual, ageless ways.
      🎲🎲 Odds are I will return to a more stuffy job before I retire. Plus, I do seem to flutuate ⏫️up & down⏬️ on the scale ⚖️. Nice to have clothes in reserve that I can draw upon for these reasons.

    I totally understand about having pockets!!! I declutter 2x a year by warm & cold season clothes, but I struggle with the pieces that checked all the boxes when I got them and somehow just don’t wear very often. 🫤

    The white shirt dress is lovely. For my white/light coloured pieces that I love where I can’t remove a stain… I dye them with a fabric dye-black/grey… or another colour depending on your preference.

    Try a Product called OUT/ "White Brite" that will take the yellow stains out of your White shirt dress. I have been using it for 10 years. Every spring I do this to re-fresh to my white Capri's, white Jeans & Tees for the up-coming summer months. Works great for bed linens & towels too. Soak for minimum of a half hour. Then wash as usual. Try to use the warmest to hottest water the garment can take.

    This was really fun!! Stains are my nemisis, especially sunscreen and armpit stains on white, and sometimes there is just no way I can get them out. What I loved about this is when you pull items out of your closet like that, nothing personal lol but I think, meh, none of those pieces look that great to me. HOWEVER I know from having you wear them that they look like a million bucks on you because of how you wear them and style them. Which makes me think of my own clothes differently. Love your mom’s cameo appearance too!

    This was such a fun video to watch! Idea for your silk dress - dye it a darker colour if you can't get the stains out! I did that recently with a white dress shirt I loved that I stained with sunscreen. Now it's a dark grey and still in rotation!

    Loved this, Alyssa! I’m glad you ended up keeping that green pleated skirt; I love it on you. I remember when you got those grey trousers. I think you swapped them out for another pair of pants you had in your closet. At the time, I really liked the pants you got rid of and I wasn’t a fan of the grey trousers. So funny that you ended up not liking them. For stains on your white shirt dress, try equal parts baking soda, peroxide and Dawn dish soap. It makes a paste and lifts any stain on my white linen shirt. Try it on the underarms, but it mightn’t work. However, those coffee stains will be history. Love you channel!😍

    Very helpful to watch (and hear) you go through your closet and decide what stays, what goes. Lately I've been doing this: I pick out something to wear on a "who cares how I look" day and if I feel good in it all day, it's a keeper. If I am uncomfortable or just don't like the look, it immediately gets rewashed and goes into a bag for donations.
