I have an asthetic fascination; I like finding beautiful things so I shop but don't buy. It satisfied the urge but saves me tons of money. I prefer to thrift because it's the thrill of the hunt that's so much fun. When I do it, I set a budget ($20 or less) - most of the time I say "okay, one fabulous item for one hour." I shop less and less the older I get...
I’m retired and trying to update and clarify my wardrobe. I’m at the point where I don’t really need anything but keep finding more ‘improvements’ and therefore get rid of things that were cheap or didn’t really fit my body or my life. I like your idea of not going beyond the set number of hangars you have and I sort of do that. I do find that I now have a definable style which is classic coastal with an edge. I’m going to plan trips to local travel destinations and branch out to travel overseas using clothing I have. Your videos are so helpful, many thanks.
Hi Kirsten, I wrote to you about a year ago telling you that I never feel good in any of my clothes. With the help of your channel and soul searching, I have turned this around, I now have weeded out the lazy go tos, I have less, but better quality that suits my lifestyle. Thankyou for your help. I now enjoy getting dressed
Hello, Rachal- I remember you!! Your comment about not knowing the feeling of loving your clothes has stayed with me. Thank you for the update. I'm thrilled to know that things are changing! I'm typing with tears in my eyes!! "I now enjoy getting dressed!" I'm honored to have been a part of your shift. Be so proud of yourself for doing this work on your own!! 💖 Bravo!!
I use the hanger method! I have dark wood hangers for cold weather clothes and light wood for warm weather clothes. If I want something new something has to go.
I lost over 50lbs 5 years ago, to get to a normal weight and nice figure. At 63. Even through lockdown, and especially afterwards Ive been filling my closet . Now i just have too many clothes! I look good in mist all if them. Many are thrifted, about half. I am retired, bored and a bit lonely for triggers. I sewed for years, love fabric and colors. I like the idea of budgeting hangers/space. Also, I just dont go out enough to warrant many dressy clothes. I have a huge problem decluttering or clearing out my closet. Maybe I'll try storing it somewhere, then donating it after a year or so ..
Th first question about triggers for excess shopping is really fundamental. If buried emotional issues are behind the shopping they are going to need to be explored and healed. The practical tactics for interrupting the shopping are excellent (I’ve used some of these for curbing my excessive shopping for makeup), but setting boundaries for controlling shopping controlled by painful experiences is like going on a diet fo an emotional eater. Risky.
Thank you for the video. I don’t see enough creators talk about this. I just started a video series about the book To Buy Or Not To Buy, which is about shopping addiction.
If I like it I buy it. It takes so little effort to shop on line, much less than you have to go to a store. I like the things I buy, don’t really need another thing but I have to learn to not buy unless I need it. Separate need and want. I am often surprised I have a piece, have totally forgotten about it.
I have an issue with fit and how I look that keeps me searching. I keep looking for clothing that camouflages, or even fits narrow hips and a thick waist. I want to look like someone else's body when I put on clothing.
@@KristenCainStyleThat is an interesting pivot. I find it necessary to like how clothes look on my body-it is not enough to love/like the item. Fortunately my body is not difficult to dress and I am happy with it, meno-belly and all. It is the hunt for the ‘perfect’ trouser/skirt/dress/shoe- sometimes I think I have found it then actually wearing the item disappoints me in terms of how it moves on my body or how the fabric wears. When it all comes together though, the joy is enormous. That feeling has me looking for something else! Trigger buys which I know I do not need or will not serve me are often returned. If I get something home and I can see early on it will not work, I return it. If I miss the return date and the item is new I sell it. If I can send the item to good will I do that. I do think I have a lot of clothes, and too many summer clothes given the climate where I live. Thanks for this food for thought.
I have the same problem. Nobody would say I was fat, but my waist is 33 and my hips are about 35 or 36. My chest is 38 because of having a broad back and shoulders. And I’m 5’ 4”. What looks most flattering on me are baggy pants and slim tops. I’ve bought a bunch of Tibi stuff, but I’m 75 and feel like I’m trying to be hip. I just feel ridiculous when I wear what I like.
4:15 What if you don’t have a trigger like that? I just think of shopping and then I get an urge to shop. Or I might be passing my favourite store. Or enough time has passed without shopping for me to miss the excitement. I am addicted to shopping, that’s all that makes me do it, I am addicted to the excitement, I don’t need another trigger. I feel like I can’t do anything about it because my trigger to shop is literally just thinking about shopping and how fun it feels. 😔 What should I do?
I'd sit with that for a bit. Really feel into why you shop. If there are truly no triggers and it's just a fun, harmless (not spending too much, no packed/overwhelming closet, no buyer's remorse) hobby...then you can feel great shopping whenever you get that urge. If on the other hand, you do feel anything less than wonderful about your shopping habits, dig a little deeper and try to identify any clues about the behavior. Do you get the urge after a tough day? Or a difficult conversation? Do you shop when you should be doing something else that you're avoiding? That kind of thing. There is nothing wrong with shopping... unless it doesn't feel good to you. 💖
Thank you! The steps are listed in the video, and usually determined on the fly while filming. ;-) I don't usually list the steps in the description as I'm a one-woman show and need to keep content creation as simple as possible. 💕
On your website under the “about” section you mention “Grab my free Style BASICS Checklist below” but don’t see anything to click on and what I tried didn’t bring me to it. Thanks. Relatively new to your channel.
My mother can’t stop buying a clothes and junk in home. My father and I tell her about her things but she never listen to me and father. How to deal with my mother?
Unfortunately, we can't really change others. You can model a different way in your own home and closet, but her journey is hers. Have you asked her why she buys so much? Usually there's an underlying reason for excess consumption. Likely, there are limiting beliefs or past traumas that shopping eases for her. I'm sure it's hard to watch and not be able to help.

You hit so many nails on the head I could have constructed a house 😂😂 Thank you for this really helpful video.
Thank you!
I’m planning to retire soon so I shop because when I do retire and have less money I’ll have what I need
Such an intelligent conversation about this topic--I will be listening to it again!
Thank you so much for your kind words.

This was really helpful. Need to think about these things. Thank you!

Very helpful video! I struggle with this issue and appreciate your approach to the topic. Need to follow the steps ASAP! Thanks!❤
This is incredibly deep. ❤
People who thrift their wardrobes are in it for the thrill of the hunt. I try to donate tons…buy one.(with that 20% off coupon).
Your content is always so realistic, down to earth and relatable ❤ Thank you for sharing these great tips.
You are so welcome! Thank you for your kind words. 💝
Great video! Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us! ❤
I love what i buy but i feel very guilty because im trying to save up money for something major and im struggling so much to stop.
Excellent video…useful suggestions. I never realized I have some issues around shopping and why I shop for clothing. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing. Your situation is so common. How I wish I could help all women to love how clothing looks on their bodies!! 💘

Peplum tops might be the answer…but I understand and can relate!
Thank you SO MUCH.
Another great video, Kristen! I know what to do...now just to do it! lol
You can do it!
Some great tips in here, thank you🙏
Glad it was helpful!

I think the reward should be free so that it doesn’t tempt you to keep shopping.
I agree, for the most part. And I've worked with lots of women who do well to reward themselves with an intention purchase.
Thos was helpful ❤

Thank you for letting me know. My website provider made some changes and the link needed to be updated. I've fixed it now! I appreciate you.

Men do as much over-shopping as women, but it's not for clothes, it's power tools and sports gear.

Male identifying? 🤦🏻♀️
