Just a quick comment for those who have not yet gone through the school of hard knocks. THIS IS NOT A QUICK AND SKILLESS JOB. You really have to follow every step in order to get good results, otherwise you get crap. Do not try to dry sand your clear coat off either --it will leave deep scratches. If you don't like the way it turned out, don't panic! Use 2000 grit sandpaper to wet sand, after you have let your clearcoat dry at least a day. Than use some compound with a buffer to really shine it up nice. You can save your paint job this way.

Sand paper, tape, paper, canned spray paint, canned clear coat. What was cost? How many coats? Was there chemical reaction with factory paint/primer? Did the paint match? Of all colors only black is universal! But fade? I'm not in anyway in auto body. But I've seen many cheap paint jobs. This is just another gimmick! If you want to try. Try on a model car. Great points, I know very little about painting. I scratched up my firebird using too much pressure on a hard rubber fender, got lighter sand paper and went over it. But this method seems great, sounds like it will work, well done. Subscribed.
A few tips.. - Once sanding is complete, PUT ON GLOVES. Your hands carry many oils, and washing them won't fix this. Touching the panel with your hands will transfer oils and compromise your work. - Clean panel with wax & grease remover on a clean lint free towel. Be sure to get all of the panel edges. Open adjacent panels (hood, door) to get to the edges if needed. - Mask off your area (if required), clean the panel again, then tack it. - Start your spraying in the "hard to reach" areas, such as the edge of the fender that's next to the hood, the edge by the door, the edge by the headlight, and the underside of the fender (wheelwell arch). Your normal back and forth spray pattern will most likely miss these areas. If the clear doesn't "envelope" the entire panel, and falls short on one edge, guess where it's going to peel first? Just some constructive tips, otherwise you did a good job. Judging by the fact that it is a 10+ year old Hyundai, you just wanted it to look better, which you definitely achieved.
Well, once you have sanded, there is no need to touch the panel. I'm sure the dude knows you tips, but the fact he painted it on the car the way he did suggests he just wants a quick and easy job. He should get a few years out of it, since the 2k is pretty tough.
I've got the exact same car with the exact same problem! This looks amazing, great job. Something I've been thinking about doing for a while, I just don't know how much life the thing has left in it.
Great job.I am having this issue with my motorcycle tank. This kind of damage is very common with Honda's here across the pond. Now hyundai's pretty much have the paint peeling off completely.
@@SwayPromo rubbed down with very very fine grit sandpaper and water. It smooths things off and flattens the orange peel effect without removing too much of the clearcoat. Then when polished with a buffer it will shine again
Thank you! My car is starting to look rough and I wasn't sure what was wrong until someone mentioned it might be the clear coat coming off. Definitely going to try this when I can.
Was looking for this exact tutorial as my 99 Tercel is peeling badly on the roof. Thanks for the clear, simple instructions. Going to watch your video on the hood area now.
note : to get the best results from spray can paint - heat the can ( safely ) - until the can is heat soaked through to about 100* f 40-50*c this will help the paint propellants - it will thin the paint droplets and cause it lay nicely preventing orange peel appearance. still a nice job for a spray can.
Thanks for actually telling me what I needed to know to get the job done without dragging it out. I looked at 10 videos before I found yours that just got to the point, simply. Thank You
Quite amazing results and very reassuring so thanks for the instructional video. Prepping well obviously takes some time but the return for that effort is appears to be well worth it. I have a ‘95 Miata with custom pain that was horribly expensive and doesn’t come in spray cans. Hopefully I will be able to bypass the paint coat step and still get a acceptable end result.
You know how to explain it short and simple with amazing results! Could you also polish/compound it on regular basis? Or will you polish away the paint, because it's to thin? Greetz from Holland!
That looks amazing man. I cant believe the results without wetsanding in stages after clear coating. Most other videos recommend alot of stages with sanding, then buffing with compound and lastly waxing. Yours look almost as shiny without anything.
I'd say it has been polished after it dried out. There are some imperfections vissible right prior masking tape removal and then the surface is litle bit smoother without those few bits at the end of the video. It has been polished off. Good job regardless
I’m very pleased to have come across this video, I have clear coat issues on 90% of my vehicle small areas only luckily, however, I will need to be doing the whole car .video has given me the confidence to buy the materials myself. base coat clear coat masking wet and dry sandpaper the whole lot I still save money. thank you so much.👍
Thank you for posting this video. It was extremely informative and your instructions where easy to follow along with. It’s amazing to me that you where able to get the results you got using spray cans. Very impressive. I have this very same problem with my HHR SS. A shop in my area gave me a quote of 5k just to prep and spray the passenger fender and door. After watching your video I’m definitely going to give it a try. So again thank you for taking the time to make this video and explain how this repair is done. Thank you

Did you ever paint your car after watching this video? I paint cars for a living and I can only imagine the aggravation a person will go through after watching this video. Hopefully it went well for ya.
Thanks for the video. I can't afford to get my old truck repaired professionally, so I am going to try this myself it's the last truck I will ever own being I have a terminal illness but this should be good enough for me.
Awesome job! Very easy to understand the way you explained and demonstrated the process. I like the way you condensed the whole thing bit kept everything needed in a very good editor fashion. Thanks for sharing!
I really enjoyed the short and simple video. This guy didn't waste no time with all the unnecessary talking and bs. Obviously if your pain is bad you going to go by the base coat. If your clear coat is messed up and obviously you know that you have to go by the clear coat. This video actually inspired me to start working on my classic car one panel at a time.
Basecoat always looks like that when its wet. As long as it looks right when its dry your ok. If you see orange peel or even worse fish eyes or crow feet then you have to start over because you have contamination under the clear and will have to sand it out and then try again. Also make sure to use wax and grease remover before spraying anything to help avoid those problems in the first place.
Awesome video. Quick, efficient great "to the point" how to video! What amazes me is how you can put clear over sanded rubbed out gray back to black! Before and after certainly looks outstanding.
Best paint/body repair channel on UA-cam by a long shot. Mad4Motors have every topic covered so far that related to my cars damage... lets just hope I can do it right!
Wow, great job! The car looks amazing where you touched up. I have a small patch of clearcoat that peeled somehow on my F30 front bumper thats needs to be done. If only I can have the guts to do what I just watched from you especially the sanding process. Just don't want to screw it up and make it looking worse!
Use a high grit, like 800, so you will not damage the surface, and if the surface is not smooth then try to go lower and more aggressive grit like 600 or less. Make sure you use water while sanding
I will be attempting this on my 08 CSX Type-S (same gen as the 06-11 civics that had that horrendous honda clearcoat damage) My clear peel is getting worse every week with areas flaking more and more. I do have a question though.. For example in your finished product in the video; What are your thoughts about buffing/polishing and waxing after everything to even out any sprayed clearcoat? I will most likely attempt on one of my extra fenders that has excessive clearcoat damage that I've attempted to wetsand 2 years ago, but did not know how to continue afterwards (which is where your video comes in incredibly handy!) Once I give that a practice-run and see how it turns out, I will attempt the same procedure on my car's top pillar, and side of the door/rear quarter. Hopefully I don't mess it up, though the clearcoat fade is so bad, I don't think I can make it look any worse hahahaha Thank you for the video!!
@@chris_-in3ff Unfortunately I haven't had the time to do anything about the paint yet. Since I made that comment, my car started shifting horribly in certain situations. Under 4k driving is normal, but 5k+ and I cannot put it into any gear without ghost shifting. Just changed transmission fluid today, and the issue persists. My next step is changing the pushrod in my hybridracing CMC to the OEM pushrod (since my buddy and I missed that step 2yrs ago). Long story short, I unfortunately won't be attempting the paint fix until the car is drivable :( I will however come back to the video if by chance I decide to do it, and will definitely leave a reply with the results. Perhaps even a vlog about it (I've been meaning to get back to vlogging, but life been knocking me down)
Hi. Excellent video , very helpful to understand & carry out the job. One question, if top coat has developed bubbles, but it’s not peeling at all. Then how to fix? Does it need to be sanded and only clear coat applied? Or base coat (paint color) also need to apply? Thanks.
@@sarahkwok1940 I have spoken to a body shop mechanic. They told me that bubble are made in the base cost, not in top coat/lacquer. Due to heat & temperature changes etc , base coat develop bubbles, so the solution is to sand down the paint and then apply base coat, paint & top coat for a perfect long lasting finish. Hope that helps.
So quick update. I gathered materials for a rattle can job. I did find more clear coat damage all around my truck, sadly I think I will need a full body paint job. I havent taken it in yet to any shop, only looking around for prices to see what is most cost effective in my situation.
He's not going to do that when the clear coat is fresh obviously, you need to wait for at least a week before you can do that. He probably done that afterwards :)
@@ghostzzz3988 I painted it last summer and it didn't look as good as Mad4Motor's 😂 lol but it did give our 20 year old vehicle a facelift. I fixed an area on the hood. It was really hard to get a good angle and probably would have come out better if I could have painted the entire hood. Its slightly noticeable, but I just wash and wax it regularly and its not unsightly. I'd suggest anyone trying this to buy good quality spray paint and take the extra time to protect surfaces you don't want painted, even practice first. I had some overspray of clear coat and it's still a little rough there. But all in all, until I can have it done professionally I'm not mad at it.
Just subscribed to your channel. Very informative, straight, and to point. I'm restoring my truck, and it has a lot of the problems that you show how to fix. I've saved a few videos and will definitely be using your knowledge to fix the issues. Thank you, very much.
Aw man you’re saving me so much here, thank you! My car’s previous owner didn’t tend to the oxidised paint and clear coat so now I have to repair all the panels. 25 years worth of paint damage…. Do you have any tips for working with dents and scratches too? Does it come out really bad if I don’t get them fixed first?
It depends. Dents will show for sure, but with scratches it depends on how deep they are. If it's just in the paint then it will level out with wet sanding and be filled in by the paint and clear coat but if it's deep then you can fill it in with glazing putty. Just remember not to paint or fill over rust if it's present.
I clearly over polished my A-pillers over the years trying to take care of my car and now have clear coat peeling. I should have been more careful as car is know to have thin clear coat. Have large spots on a-pillers with no clear coat along with fading hood and other issues want to fix but being a red mica I'm sure I cant fix basecoat. But maybe can fix peeling on a-pillers with clear coat. Car is Mazdaspeed6 red which had beautiful paint but know to have hood and rear fender rust issues. Now 16 years old is getting the rust (bought it in 2007). Watching this makes me want to attempt to fix A-pillers. But to fix other issues going to be a project...but IMO this came out amazing. Did you have a fan going to pull overspray? Just looks surprising good for spray can.

MOST UNDERRATED AUTOMOTIVE CHANNEL ON UA-cam!
Just the video I was looking for. Straight to the point, instead of making a long video with ads. I have some peeling on my car roof I want to repair correctly. I already had to fix some small, rusted spots by sanding them down and using touchup paint to seal the repair. It has kept water out for at least a year but is definitely a band aid fix.
I really appreciate that you didn’t make this a 20 minute video on how to use a spray can like most people would do.
Awesome, the thumbs down are from auto body shops he’s putting out of business 👻
Soo true 🤣👌

@@krazykozey2259 yup i agree...its the block sanding process that usually brings them back like "how much did you want to do this again"😂😂
If it doesn't work, at least it was cheaper than a real one!
Thank you for all your clear consise videos and fast forwarding through the sanding bits...brilliant!!

that's awesome! has it started to peel again or has it lasted?
Great points, I know very little about painting. I scratched up my firebird using too much pressure on a hard rubber fender, got lighter sand paper and went over it. But this method seems great, sounds like it will work, well done. Subscribed.
Watching this for my own girl! 86! What about you!
did you ever end up doing it? and if so how did it turn out?
Finally, a video that is straight to the point!
Thank you Sir...
Judging by the fact that it is a 10+ year old Hyundai, you just wanted it to look better, which you definitely achieved.

note : to get the best results from spray can paint - heat the can ( safely ) - until the can is heat soaked through to about 100* f 40-50*c this will help the paint propellants - it will thin the paint droplets and cause it lay nicely preventing orange peel appearance. still a nice job for a spray can.
Heat the can safely by putting it in a bucket of hot but not boiling water.
Heat the can safely by microwaving it for 30 seconds

Quite amazing results and very reassuring so thanks for the instructional video. Prepping well obviously takes some time but the return for that effort is appears to be well worth it. I have a ‘95 Miata with custom pain that was horribly expensive and doesn’t come in spray cans. Hopefully I will be able to bypass the paint coat step and still get a acceptable end result.
Same here.😔

@@ArcadiaVibe Have you tried this yet, Im looking at doing it for mine
I was a little worried at first when you put the base color on because of that orange peel, but it turned out really awesome. Nice work!
The clear will help hide that. As long as the clear has no orange peal. You see the top shiny layer.
The base coat will lay down
Yea. The base coat is going to put a thin coat over everything, and because gravity happens, the small divots even out.
Plus if you buff and polish it it'll really really help
Was that just water in the water bottle during sanding??
Yes just water for the wetsand
Add dishwashing soap helps with wet sanding
Fantastic!! Just what I was looking for. Thanks for making this so simple and straightforward.
Did you do it!?
Hopefully I don't mess it up, though the clearcoat fade is so bad, I don't think I can make it look any worse hahahaha
Thank you for the video!!
I'm thinking of doing this to a 2010 civic too.. how'd it go?
@@chris_-in3ff Unfortunately I haven't had the time to do anything about the paint yet. Since I made that comment, my car started shifting horribly in certain situations. Under 4k driving is normal, but 5k+ and I cannot put it into any gear without ghost shifting. Just changed transmission fluid today, and the issue persists. My next step is changing the pushrod in my hybridracing CMC to the OEM pushrod (since my buddy and I missed that step 2yrs ago).
Long story short, I unfortunately won't be attempting the paint fix until the car is drivable :(

Hi. Excellent video , very helpful to understand & carry out the job.
One question, if top coat has developed bubbles, but it’s not peeling at all. Then how to fix?
Does it need to be sanded and only clear coat applied? Or base coat (paint color) also need to apply?
Thanks.

@@sarahkwok1940 nobody answered my question yet.. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
