"Why does something like Eromanga-Sensei do so well!?" Well to quote Gigguk, "Because anime is trash, and so are we!"
Kyle Lambert agree
I AM SO DISAPPOINTED THAT HOUSEKI NO KUNI DIDN’T MAKE IT!!!! Let me give you a small sample list of amazing things about it:
IT’S 3D ANIMATION AND IT IS AMAZING!!! It pulls it off SO. WELL. Normally I HATE 3D animation, but this!? It’s INCREDIBLE!
It does an AMAZING job of making you fall for the characters!!! Hits you right in the feels.
Two words: *Character Development.* NO ONE call convince me that Phos doesn’t have one of the most tragic and effective character development plots EVER. I cried when I saw how much they had changed.
Keep in mind this popularity list is calculated by the number of people who added it to their MAL and since a lot of anime watchers binge series after they have finished later seasons may not have had as many people binge them yet.
As a fan of the series myself, I’d like to hope you’re right, but I don’t use the unaltered hard values to create this video. A scaling value is applied to counteract newer series having lower numbers. Houseki no Kuni just unfortunately doesn’t have very high viewership.
I just looked up it’s viewership and I am suprised to see how low it actually was, it being 3D must have been a huge turn off for a lot of people to not even attempt to watch it and even adding some sort of scale doesn’t look like it will help it. It’s a shame that some anime are just like this especially for such a good series.
It really is. But who knows? Maybe if there is a Season 2 it will make more of a splash. For now we can just consider it an unknown gem. (pun intended)
I think your "dislike" of Gamers and Konosuba just comes down to you not liking comedy based on stupidity. Both of these shows got that in spades and rely on characters being stupid for the comedy to unfold. Maybe that's just not your thing. Personally I love them both. I'm also equally surprised and saddend that Little Witch Academia didn't make the list. It sure would have deserved it, but I'm blaming Netflix's model of releasing it waaaay too late for this one. Sure, Kakegurui was on Netflix too, but Psycho Action with hot girls surely has a bigger core audience than cute little Witches doing Magic.
Good video overall, keep it up.
I personally don’t like konosuba myself and while the stupidity is part of it the thing I don’t like about it is how it relied on the same few gags over and over again in uncreative circumstances. It ended up so bad that each characters literally became an embodiment of a certain gag making them boring and repetitive.
i think its alot more complicated than that, i love konosuba but couldt watch even 1 episode of gamers.
I am disappointed with people for not having Girls last tour, Re Creators and Houseki no kuni in their anime list for this popularity poll.
maybe Re creators was too niche or not good enough for many
I quite like your channel so far as a new discovery, keep up the good work! I need to check out more of your content.
I always enjoy this year end popularity video :) thanks for it!
Late to the party again haha, but nice review as always.
Just sharing my thoughts about anime popularity in general. I think we can all agree that anime preferences are highly subjective, but one thing I often find discouraging is that the popularity is also often based on how hated or memeable the series are. Niche or trashy shows are often meant to cater to specific pool of audiences , but some are often given too much attention and publicity among general community for the sake of criticizing or making fun of the series. So don't feel disappointed if those shows seemed to rank high on popularity list because there's an equal probability that they're there out of jest. Just hope that it won't be interpreted as general preference of the community.
(also disclaimer, I also occasionally enjoy shows that are considered trashy, so no bias from me here)
Man, how many of an Anime episodes you Watch in one day!
I don't know about you, but besides Eromanga and Masume's Revenge this popularity list is decent. I like Aot as you said it's fun as hell to watch and I like Konosuba. Though I wasn't too impressed by this year, except for My Hero Academia, Made in Abyss and Kekkai Sensen. Those three were all very solid and a joy to watch, but everything else was kind of "meh". I'm probably missing some gems and I hope you can lead me to them in your personal list this year.
Hadn't listened to Hanezeve Caradhina in a while. Instant fucking chills, goddamn.
would be interesting to see ur personal top 10 list this season
Well, it wasn't as bad as expected. ~5 of 15 shows being from meh to trash and the rest being at least decent to good seems a pretty ok rate. I'm with you on your dislike of stupid based comedy (aka 'Missunderstanding the anime' and 'Hype into another world 2') and standard romance like 'I'm too stupid to understand tsunderes so i take revenge for nothing', but the rest is watchable.
My list of stuff per season that should be watched this year (for stuff not on this list) starting from Winter:
Acca 13
Demi-chan
Little Witch
Showa Genroku Rakugo
Spring:
Kings Avatar
Re:Creators
Sagrada Reset
Sakura Quest
Uchouten Kazoku 2
Summer:
Princess Principal
Fall:
Just Because
Konohana Kitan
Net-juu no Susume
(stuff i haven't finished but will probably fit in here:
Inuyashiki
Children of Whales
Mahoutsukai)
Some stuff should be for everyone and some is taste dependend (like Konohana Kitan).
Why is Re:Creators and SukaSuka not on this list?
first. come on, you know you care
Made In Abyss's later arcs is some of the best manga I've ever read
I, for one, would enjoy hearing a top 10 of the year from you
Don’t you worry, this isn’t the last of my 2017 end-of-year content.
Now a list of your favorites.
MHA is proof that the standard shonen formula works if the mangaka is't a hack
I read the blue exorcist manga, and they’re pretty great.
Won’t mind my hero academia getting attention and for second place is coming and happy that’s it’s here .Won’t mind season 3
Quick update on your last comment mentioning that some series were available on Anime Strike. A couple of days ago, Amazon cancelled Anime Strike, and all its series are now available on Amazon Prime directly. So if you, like me, had Amazon Prime but were too cheap to pay extra fro Anime Strike, you can now watch series like _Made in the Abyss_ and _Re:Creators._
Actually, I do say they’re available on Amazon, not Strike.
Grex Oops, I just rewatched the ending and you're right. Don't know why I thought you said "Anime Strike". Sorry.
No problem lol
Eromanga Sensei was memed to death and almost no one who watched and enjoyed it(including me) thought it was a good show, it's kinda like the room of anime
Remember when anime used to be about thrilling stories and great characters instead of cute anime girls? I don't either.
Now I know Idc about ratings anymore . Click on an anime , if it looks good watch it . And if you see description either good or bad still you like it then watch it .
Only way nowadays
Just admit it already... Your real #1 was Eromanga Sensei. We know. We always know.
What happened to the Top 17? Also, surprised that LWA, Sakura Quest, Re:Creators, and Fate/Apocrypha weren't on the list.
The Top 16 of 2016 was a fluke. I did consider maintaining the “tradition” for 2017, but it didn’t seem like the best long-term idea.
what about rakugo season 2
I thought rakugo season 2 was pretty popular this year since it's 2nd season ranked pretty high on the myanimelist rankings
It was well-received, but not terribly popular in terms of how many people actually saw it. That is the key distinction of this list.
Grex I see that’s a shame though
I really enjoyed the series
Nice video! I want to respond here, but first let me rant about Kuzu no Honkai. I hated all of the characters (god damn they are just all about their feelings, why don’t they just get a hobby or do their homework or something), found none of it relatable, couldn’t care about the melodrama, dropped on episode 7. As for the rest of the list:
15. Didn’t watch
14. Didn’t watch
13. Haven’t been super hyped by this sequel but it’s definitely enjoyable and keeps things interesting
12. Didn’t watch
11. Didn’t watch
10. I see its redeeming qualities but I hated it
9. This anime is trash, pandering, insulting, very weak, maybe a couple of redeeming qualities
8. This anime is trash but I kinda love it. It got pretty exciting but there is plenty to hate about it
7. Didn’t watch, I’ve got the first season on-hold. It’s decent so far.
6. Didn’t watch (sorry)
5. This is also trash. When they added the blonde girl I was like “no. Fuck this. I see where this is going.” The premise was fine but the development and characters made me DROP.
4. I adore this anime, it’s my anime of the year.
3. I really like this. The sequel wasn’t any worse imo. Great characters and really hilarious comedy.
2. Yeah this was pretty great. The tournament arc had me hyped. The episodes always seemed to go so quickly. Totally great fun.
1. I liked the atmosphere, it got very interesting. I was really impressed by it.
Romance anime in my opinion was terrible in 2017 .It was like lots of troupes this year .Do a review on pop team epic .It could be “Is pop team epic any good
I was dissapointed by Eromanga Sensei. After all that hype, it was just fairly average ecchi series with some nice animation. I was hoping it would be either so bad its great or so wrong its cringy but it was just ok. Oreimo was better.
Don't feel bad I also hated konosuba
Konosuba S2, was a big downgrade compared to the first still good but a lot of the humour was starting to get played out
Tzuresure Children - great show
Gamers - boring and predictable
Shokugeki - it's overstaying its welcome
Youjo Senki - the only good isekai ever
Akashic records - trash
Kuzu no Honkai - good adaptation
Eromanga Sensei - no, just no
Kakeguri - intriguing and forgettable
Ao no exorcist - sequel to a boring shonen
Made in Abyss - Once in a decade show
Masamune kun - poorly written trash
Kobayashi San - very good
Konosuba 2 - exporuosionu!
Boku no hero - best shounen in a while
Shingeki no kyoukin - not quite as good as you remember.
I wonder if you're hard to impress
You really dragged this out for that maximum ad revenue didn't you
Maximum ad revenue at my paltry view numbers. Totally.
are you fucking kidding me? his video from last year was literally twice as long
