I’ve grown up watching the classics of anime, since my Japanese dad made me watch many series such as cowboy bebop, patolebar, and movies like Akira. I have watched the original series, and I was nothing least of pleased when I finished, but when I heard there will be a remake, I had mixed emotions. I didn’t want the same kind of atmosphere, story type or art style. I wanted the best parts of kino to be portrayed in this new series. Yes something like the original might have been nice, but me having watched the old series, I much preferred the one we got since it was like a”best moments of kino” instead of just being a similar series.
I agree with you but I still really like it and want a second season. There are some plus sides to the 2017 version too. Namely, for me at least, that it feels like the addition of other reoccurring characters makes it feel like there may be a larger story to it all.
That’s what I’m saying, I think it’s just nostalgia clouding people. Honestly I saw the trailers for both and something about the new adaptation just clicked with me instantly. I read the plot of the whole Kino franchise and I honestly felt the vibes and even that amazing opening for the new adaptation just felt more genuine to what the Kino franchise is supposed to be about.
Joseph Simon in the original series Kino Personality felt more tomboy here while I’m the reboot kino acts more of a girl .I watched the original anime before watching the reboot and while I agree on what’s been said in the video this is what I said
while i already know that new kino definitely won't be as good as old one (Nakamura directing is just too good) but i just can't really hate it either weird
@Milo This is the opinion I'd agree with most. I think people just are attached to the original. Both have their little problems, but I also think their both amazing. They're almost equally good. The reboot's animation and music is definitely improved, but the old one has a more extended characterization, and builds up to the *actual climax* better.
Every writing consists of highs and lows, because without the lower points the highs wouldn't be that high. The problem with giving fans the choice the obvious choice is the high point, but without the build up to get there only high points aren't that high of points but a plateau. People thought that it would be ok in Kinos Journey because it is episodic, but they missed that even though there is no overarching narative, the structure still plays with breaking the mold it builds up through the more normal structure in 'normal' episodes.
I haven't been watching KJ2017, but it seems the latest episode is a re-adaptation of "A Kind Land", which fits in well with the thesis of "favorites" being memorable because of the surrounding context. (For anyone who hasn't seen the original, that was the final episode.) Aside from being another story where people die, the thing I remember most about watching it was the shock of seeing Kino's reaction to the big twist. For a dozen episodes, we've seen this person who has learned to keep her emotional reactions almost entirely muted; a calm, unfazeable observer. And then THAT happens, and she FALLS TO HER KNEES in horror. Without the setup, the punchline doesn't work. And without the context of a stoic character, bursts of emotion don't carry the same weight.
As soon as I heard that the episodes were chosen by popularity poll, alarms went off in my head "OOOOOOH, it makes so much sense now..." "A Kind Land" is one of the best Kino stories and a personal favorite of mine, "Oh great, this is what we're doing now?" I mentally prepared myself this time around and I was legitimately giddy watching it. Ultimately I think this is what Kino 2017 IS, it's just a compilation of fan favorite Kino stories. This video is correct in that there is no sense of direction or consistency as the series progresses. It's here just to satisfy us who were fans of Kino in the past, to relive (or rewatch... re-experience?) our favorite moments, in that sense, it's a good show to us (because we HAVE that context) and although it's still managing to hook new people, it's not aimed at a new audience by any stretch.
The funny thing is, 2017 is more source material accurate than the 2003 one & its movies. And that on its own really leaves me conflicted on what i want from the series or what I like. Nakaurma directing 2003 was a great call as I felt fit with the flow of the adaptation of the first few volumes but at the same time the fact it wasnt source accurate just feels off. Like with FMA & FMAB. All i hope for is a new kino anime that doesnt adapt based on a popularity poll and is more focused on the original methodical take
I haven't watched either, but I can already say that the newer one not only looks generic, without any special design characteristics. Not only that, it lacks almost any atmosphere, it's too bright, the art and saturation makes the world look empty, but not in an atmospheric sense.
Reasonable critique. Personally, I'm enjoying it a lot. I've only watched few episodes of the old series prior so I had some idea who Kino is but not that much. In fact, the 2nd episode left me in awe because I didn't know Kino was capable of such badassery.
I think I like the remake more than the original. A big reason is that the art is better, it feels like Kino is actually traveling a world. The original made the world feel too dreamlike, it did help to highlight its philosophical themes but it failed in making the places Kino visited feel like real places that people would live. In a way, the remake feels like Kino is traveling to new and interesting locations while the old version feels like she was escaping from the last place she visted if that makes sense.
- Minor Spoiler Alert - just finished both old ver. & ner ver. Kino Journey, although new Kino Journey is action-packed, somehow I still feel the old ver. Kino is much more badass than new ver. because of the second episode ( 4:23 ), but new Kino Journey is good too since we can know more about side characters' backstory like badass Shishou, and the way Kino shoot through the arm hole of Shizu and killed the king instead of old ver. Shizu rush forward to try to stop Kino
OG kino was with the times tbh. The new kino just tried to be too modern. I liked tryna figure out what kino was thinking as her expressions never really showed emotion. But in the new kino she always shows what she is feeling. It kills the vibe for me
2003 series had Sadayuki Murai on the writing team. The guy who wrote most of Satoshi Kon's screenplays and one of the best Cowboy Bebop episodes: Pierrot le Fou. Keiichi Shigusawa is the only person who worked on both and he's not as strong a writer. It's just Sword Art Online guys, so I mean they're certainly competent but not exactly inspired. Not to mention that Nakamura was an auteur director who was very particular with his filmmaking. This series is just made for anime fans, it doesn't have the loving intricacy that Nakamura gave his work. His editing and sound design were unmatched. His death was such a loss to the industry.
Having fell in love with Kino's journeg from the anime on my childhood and later read all the LN series i gotta say this adaptation was trully made for fans. I like it personally but like what said in this video it lacks elements of what's make KnT great. Just hope this adaptation can hooked another new fan just like it did to me once.
Yeah I don’t think this one will surpass the original, however I don’t think the new one is trash .Good video buddy will you do a my hero academia review .I know you may not like this series
i see the new remake as a season 2 of sorts cause it has new stories that season 1 didnt have while i like season 1 more because of some of its episodes ill probably like season 2 more in other ways so what im saying is season 1 does some things better then season 2 and season 2 also does some things better then season 1
The Origin story episode. Just to compare, both versions had this episode. I did like the old version more, it shocked me, it was unexpected. Now, of course it may seem that I was expecting something better from the new version, but no, it was..simply rushed. Had I watched the new version first - would it shocked me the same way, maybe. But I know I'll remember the old one better, for the build up, for the pacing. Simple, really. I love both shows, though. I will take more of Kino's journey any day.
I just watched the new one this week in a day. I never watched the old one but I don’t see what’s honestly wrong with the new adaptation, it kept me watching and intrigued and it had a infectious vibe to it that made me want to watch more. I can see some flaws but overall it gets much more hate than it really needs to, not to mention the op is god tier😂
That's because you never watched the old one. Trust me you can change your mind after that. ;) The old one exposes the deep meaning and the dark side make the stories sound real.
Kino Journey 2017 has been pretty lacklustre. It lacks the charm from the original series and instead it became just another generic episodic series. I been watching both the old and new series of Kino Journey weekly and the old one has more substance to it and it old one is overall more enjoyable. Plus the artstyle of the new one isn't appealing compare to the old one in my opinion
KurataLordStage I disagree, I like the artstyle a lot more in the new Kino. And I even found the new Kino more entertaining even though I agree that the old Kino had better pacing.
the voice direction in both are clearly going different directions. i first noticed it in episode 1 with the "country where you can kill" not saying it is necessarily good or bad but you can tell they went for a different effect/emphasis
What I'm just like confused of is that there is 2 kino's, first the current is a girl, but thin the ep. 11 made it worse, there are 2 kino where I don't know if this is just a and was different or what because in the original, if I can remember the kino in there was the girl with a ribbon was that girl and then name herself kino, but in like a ep in 2017, it shows kino's past life, as a (I might spoil it so you better watch the anime first) then that where she start her journey, so it made it worse there are now 2 different "world" you can say but I can say that they made it, the story complicated. But in my theory it might be a different world but as soon as I watched this it made sense. And by the way Thx
I wanted to see how 1) Kino met her master after escaping her country at a young age & 2) who was that blonde girl talking to Kino at the beginning of episode 2? (I’m not sure if she’s just a random to warn Kino about the country she’s heading to)
You have singlehandedly changed my opinion. Essentially. The original Kino's journey is a composition. And the most important part of music is the silence between notes. 2017 Kino omits the silence of the original.
ah, this is why there is some sense of disconnection when i watch this anime. I only watch the 2017 version of kino no tabi without prior knowledge of other series.
What do you mean by "coherency?" Do you mean the overall tone of the show does not stay consistent? Is it that it doesn't follow or pay its respects to the original work? Or is it the coherency of Kino's personality? I personally disagree with most of the faults mentioned in the video. Though the colosseum episode did not build up quite as well as the original did (for it was just one episode instead of two), I think saying the reboot had "tortured pacing" is just wrong. There were enough subtle hints between scenes that fill in the details in order for it to pace nicely. The end felt fulfilling, as viewers know of the King's tyranny, and also gave a nice commentary on power and human reaction. Also, I believe there's sufficient "downtime" throughout the series. It is not just a mess of climax, half of the show is downtime and gives enough time for us to enjoy the essence of each country. Lastly, I think it's nice that the show occasionally changed its focus on different characters. I think it spoke well to the overall message of the show regarding the life of a traveler and the distinct ideologies of different people. But please elaborate on "coherent," that part I did not get. P.S. I would also like to remind you that Kino's philosophy has been (both in the original and the reboot) that 1. Things are not always as they seem to be. 2. Therefore no matter what action you take, there is no way to predict the forthcoming events. 3. A traveler's job is to adapt and understand the perspectives of different people in a country.
The coherent and the pacing is what the author set to control the emotion that the audiences will get upon reading their work. With most work, you need a good build up. This even exists in cooking. Cooking a good dish is drastically different from cooking a good meal. Appetizer Soup Main course Dessert Cheese is an example of a meal. Each dishes of this meal must be compatible and supporting each other to make a good meal. There is also problem with the order at which should come first and which come later. What the 2017 anime did is compiling a bunch of good dishes. While separately each of them is well-made, they do not follow the coherent structure laid out by the author of the novel like the 2003 anime did. This mix-match of pacing and emotional ride therefore hampered the overall quality of the anime (not the quality of the episode). For this reason, it wasn't utilising the full potential of its plotline and build-up. You can argue however you want about the 2017 being well-made but there is a reason why the novel author made the novel with the chapters in their current order.
You expected it to ‘surpass the original’? You’re harsh. Your expectations are too high. That’s why you were disappointed. Have you ever watched both versions of two shows like FMA and FMAB? Personally, I never got around to watching kino’s journey, but 2017 is entertaining. I can’t say how it stands up to the original, but it seems the new fans like it. It’s the old fans I’ve heard criticism from. (Of course because they can compare. I know what that feels like. I’ve been on both sides.) Still I think 2017 is worth something. That’s not to say your criticisms aren’t valid, just that your expectations seemed to be too high.
As someone who has only seen the 2017 version, I didn't enjoy it. i didn't think it really explored the ideas it presented, and i'm not really sure what kind of mood it was going for. it wasn't exciting, but it wasn't slow and relaxing either, so i just found it boring. it has made me want to seek out the original though
kinda forced into it cuz of what happened. the events of that day are a blur because of how much and how fast everything happened. it also shows how Kino's gender is kind of an irrelevant fact in most if not all of the story.
BuildingADream 26 many topics are discussed. what i know is kino's gender is irrelevant because kino is the analog for the reader/viewer. and that becomes apparent in her backstory of when she took on the persona of kino
That’s how I feel although I never watched the old version, but I did look at trailers and snippets. Something about the new version clicked with me instantly and it feels more genuine to what the Kino franchise is supposed to really be about and not to mention the animation and opening was god tier😂😂. I think people get so wrapped up in their nostalgia that they automatically crap on a reboot just cuz it’s a reboot

Yes omg. Finally someone said. The author already said Kino is just Kino. He don't want Kino being reffered as boy or girl. JUST KINO. Damn. But yes in light novel Kino is female.
I think that every episode is a different story who cronoglicaly has no sense (he received a gun after he used it 5 episode ago I was like wtf? And there is a end but is not a end idk) but if you take every episode for what is it I think it's very great
Grex In Saint Young Men, everyone calls Jesus as "Yes-Suu". Would you call him "Yes-Suu" because everyone in the show calls him that or would you call him "Jesus" like the majority of real-life people?
Im 3 episodes in on the new series, and I cant stand what they have done, especially with Kinos character. She is a borderline psychopath now, rather than a quiet and reserved traveler. It was edgy and annoying, rather than thought provoking and atmospheric. It just doesnt even compare.
So I’m a bit late here I watched show almost 3 years ago not the original the remake I was in love with it, the show to me felt like a whole different world granted it was on of the shows that got me into anime I dived deep it made me want to see others creation of a universe no matter what anyone says this will always hold a place along my first anime as a kid
Really good comparison on both story pace. But people who comment about the design characters are biased. Both version are illustrated by the same person, his drawing style has changed a lot.
I would prefer to separate the two. I think the old kino's journey is a classic to me, while to some the animation isn't the best I think it contributes to the atmosphere it portrays. That's why It is one of my favorite shows. Modern kino is itself own thing, so I try to separate the two and look at their own strength. I think it did a pretty good job for this time and age. In opinion, I don't think it's possible to recreate the exact atmosphere it created in this age, and also it is being done through a new direction. I believe both shows had something lacking, which makes hard to rate them higher. I just love seeing new interpretation through the directors' eyes.
Interesting... I never thought about it that way. At any rate, I really enjoyed both the 2017 anime, the 2003 anime, and the light novels, and for what it's worth, it was the 2017 anime that got me into it. Indeed the very action-packed parts you talk about- the first episode, the first contact I got with the Kino series is watching the 2017 Colosseum episode, without which I never would have gone on to read the light novels. But definitely do get how your point about a light novel reader and someone who only watched the 2017 anime would get a totally different impression of Kino.
I liked all of them, the action was awesome... but also enjoyed Kino's calmness. The story of the prophecy book and the sad poem episode is also amazing.
So basically, watch the original and then watch this to get some more episodes.

@Milo This is the opinion I'd agree with most. I think people just are attached to the original. Both have their little problems, but I also think their both amazing. They're almost equally good. The reboot's animation and music is definitely improved, but the old one has a more extended characterization, and builds up to the *actual climax* better.
New better, old is ugly

I felt this way as well. I really liked how Kino remains impartial unless there is an imminent threat to life, but she's not like that in 2017.
Yes she is
@@kamronspencer4910 exactly
Every writing consists of highs and lows, because without the lower points the highs wouldn't be that high. The problem with giving fans the choice the obvious choice is the high point, but without the build up to get there only high points aren't that high of points but a plateau. People thought that it would be ok in Kinos Journey because it is episodic, but they missed that even though there is no overarching narative, the structure still plays with breaking the mold it builds up through the more normal structure in 'normal' episodes.
Thank you for repeating what he said in the video.
As soon as I heard that the episodes were chosen by popularity poll, alarms went off in my head "OOOOOOH, it makes so much sense now..."
"A Kind Land" is one of the best Kino stories and a personal favorite of mine, "Oh great, this is what we're doing now?" I mentally prepared myself this time around and I was legitimately giddy watching it.
I've never seen the original, but this new version is one of my favourite anime of all time
you should! the original one is masterpiece!
Since it's been 4 years, have you watched the 2003 one?
Because the theme is indeed empty but not empty at the same time yet beautiful. Just watch it
I might be the only person that is liking the 2017 Kino more then the 2003 version

Reasonable critique. Personally, I'm enjoying it a lot. I've only watched few episodes of the old series prior so I had some idea who Kino is but not that much. In fact, the 2nd episode left me in awe because I didn't know Kino was capable of such badassery.
but Kino's Journey isn't about badassery.
I'm just wondering why they changed stuff like the 3 day tile which they changes on the 3rd episode which I'm currently on.. So what happened...
So basically its different
I think I like the remake more than the original. A big reason is that the art is better, it feels like Kino is actually traveling a world. The original made the world feel too dreamlike, it did help to highlight its philosophical themes but it failed in making the places Kino visited feel like real places that people would live. In a way, the remake feels like Kino is traveling to new and interesting locations while the old version feels like she was escaping from the last place she visted if that makes sense.
- Minor Spoiler Alert -
just finished both old ver.
It kills the vibe for me
That's kino though... there are tons of people who don't really show emotions irl.
Blob Kino looked better and is better. Fight me.

100% agreed. It's just off. Kino isn't relatable morally. Her virtues are inconsistent.
Trust me you can change your mind after that. ;)
The old one exposes the deep meaning and the dark side make the stories sound real.
Since it's been a year, have you watched the 2003 one?
Kino Journey 2017 has been pretty lacklustre.
It lacks the charm from the original series and instead it became just another generic episodic series.
I been watching both the old and new series of Kino Journey weekly and the old one has more substance to it and it old one is overall more enjoyable.
Plus the artstyle of the new one isn't appealing compare to the old one in my opinion
KurataLordStage I disagree, I like the artstyle a lot more in the new Kino. And I even found the new Kino more entertaining even though I agree that the old Kino had better pacing.
the voice direction also needs some getting used to...
siekensou77 What do you mean by that? I think the voice acting is perfectly fine in both versions of the anime.
the voice direction in both are clearly going different directions. i first noticed it in episode 1 with the "country where you can kill"
not saying it is necessarily good or bad but you can tell they went for a different effect/emphasis
siekensou77 Ohh ok I see your point now.
The remake is generic af, but were you really watching the show if you don't remember Kino doesnt like being gendered
You have to define generic. There's no generic anime that goes on about visiting different countries lmao
Huh I thought he would receive a huge backlash from creating this video
The characters look like plastic toys in this new version
I wanted to see how 1) Kino met her master after escaping her country at a young age & 2) who was that blonde girl talking to Kino at the beginning of episode 2? (I’m not sure if she’s just a random to warn Kino about the country she’s heading to)
1) The original series showed it
2) hmmmm
They messed up colosseum so bad :(
Your own opinion, even if it's wrong
They did. It was so rushed
I'm reading the manga. I love it so far, 5 volumes in.
Why does her hair color change? When she was young it was purple, then through the show it’s green then by the last episode blue.
P.S. I would also like to remind you that Kino's philosophy has been (both in the original and the reboot) that
Appetizer
Soup
Main course
Dessert
Cheese
is an example of a meal.
Ah yes atmosphere.
Everytime i heard that word it preceeds and american overhyping some shit that is empty

Kinos a girl? whut!!! I always thought kinos was a boy's name.
elhugo why can’t it be unisex? Though, yes kino is a girl.
Kino's gender is irrelevant and the original series in 2003 makes that very clear. kino is just an observer that represents the reader/viewer.
BuildingADream 26
not name alone. she took on his entire persona.
kinda forced into it cuz of what happened. the events of that day are a blur because of how much and how fast everything happened.
it also shows how Kino's gender is kind of an irrelevant fact in most if not all of the story.
BuildingADream 26
many topics are discussed. what i know is kino's gender is irrelevant because kino is the analog for the reader/viewer. and that becomes apparent in her backstory of when she took on the persona of kino
Why does kino’s eye color change so much, sometimes it’s green, then other times it’s blue
I actually enjoyed the 2017 version more than the 2003
That’s how I feel although I never watched the old version, but I did look at trailers and snippets. Something about the new version clicked with me instantly and it feels more genuine to what the Kino franchise is supposed to really be about and not to mention the animation and opening was god tier😂😂. That's exactly how it is pronounced by the characters of the show.
