20 years ago, I was a 10 years old boy. My friend raved about this show and I looked at him and asked “Isn’t it a girl’s show?” My fellow male friend insisted I try watching it. I gave it a shot. My world was never the same.
Darkness lurking inside that ah so calm and cheery colourful depiction in Card Captor Sakura huh?
And there CLAMP works for boys too. See Gakuen Detective
Interesting to know
@@10tailedbijuu couldn’t say because I didn’t watch the show til 2018
>Saying flower card isn't dangerous
Boi people were DROWNING LITERALLY in flowers
I like how afterward they just shrugged it off like it was just some bad weather.
children were going to be choked to death,, but I guess all's well that ends well :P
Kill them with kindness
That could be dangerous for people allergic to pollen!
To me, this is the "Magical Girl Anime" that I compare all others in the genre.
Peikko Mies COUGHTmadokaCOUGHT
Idk about that. I like this a lot.. I love this and yet, I don't like Magic Girl anime as a whole. In fact I'd say I steer clear of it in general. It's in the genre and yet it's not the standard kind.

I love cardcapor sakura but for some reason I don't want to watch sailor moon
@@konniekon525 swear what
I still rewatch this show every once in a while, despite not being a kid anymore. I just love kids shows that don't assume their audience is stupid. If certain details goes over a kid's head it's not a big deal, but for others in the audience that do get it, we really appreciate it.
can you give some examples?
Tbh I don't think this is a "kids show" I think it was just meant for all ages.
@@Crusina for example, the first card sakura made was The Nameless card, which created by her love to syaoran. At the 2nd movie, The Nothing was unleash and about to detroy the world, and Sakura captured it by The Nameless card, and together they became The Hope. before i just thought "ah, the 2 card become one, the nameless card does have an use after all!". only after i grew up i relize how much of a symbolism this is.
In my opinion, the only thing I don't really like about Cardcaptor Sakura is how the show had young girls having relationships with older men such as Sakura's parents or how her 10-11-year old friend Rika had a relationship with her thirty-something year old teacher.
Zistheone2 true. That part was always weird to me. Even her dad was a creep. Lol
Yeah, I was also bothered by Mizuki sensei and her relationships with Touya and later Eriol.
CLAMP, the makers of CC, has a strong stance of love is love. Whether between men and women, 2 men, 2 women, a human and angle, angel and demon, 2 robots, a human and robot... etc. The love they are talking about is spiritual and emotional. It is not focused on the physical. If you read the manga (or even watch the show) you see the older males keep the younger girls at a distance, making it very very clear they will not engage in a relationship until they are older. That they love and respect the girl, and for that reason they will wait and if, when the girl is of age, she still loves him, only THEN will they actually see if they will be a good couple. This isn't to say it isn't in squick territory (for Rika and Terada-sensei specifically) but it's very clear CLAMP does not condone pedophilia.
@@10tailedbijuu Dude, Japan has two age of consent laws. The first specifically between teenagers being ages 13-18. The second being the adult age of consent being age 18. Even by Japan's standards, that is straight of pedophilia. And what makes it worse is that the show openly celebrates it with relationships and the characters actually consenting to it. Like hell a 10 year old is gonna date her 30 year old teacher in real life. This show is really pushing an agenda.
@@IceQueen975 If there's romantic tension between an adult and a child, than that's still pedophilia because children would never consent to that. Yes, children have puppy crushes on adults out of curiosity and self-discovery, but a real romantic crush towards an adult, let alone engaging with it like in CCP is just absurd.
This show is like spending time with family, it's comforting and relaxing. I love this show honestly and I'm glad you're talking about it. You're seriously becoming one of my favorite reviewers. You're not too pretentious or snobby, but you aren't a casual either, it's so rare to find that kind of person. Keep up the good work.
You truly nailed that feeling on the head there. Makes me wish Kinomotos were real, I'd wanna spend time with them like a great family would...
It’s definitely slow paced honestly
A strong point to mention is that the strong character work and writing of this series should be attributed to the writers of the manga it was based off of, CLAMP. Clamp should be noted to not deal with only one genre in particular, but varies them greatly from work to work. From romance, to magical girl, to action adventure, to science fiction. Even more outright brutal works such as X. They treat all of their stories and characters with the same level of respect and give them layers of depth when necessary.
Wow, fellow CLAMP fans? Or right stabbing you in the feels, like Kobato, The one I love, and shirayuki hime? Have you seen it yet?....readY to bawls your eyes out.
And this is why I love CLAMP to bits and look to their works for inspiration and guidance in my own writing.
Yes, we all love CLAMPS work. And btw, you probably already know this, but CLAMP made the anime too, not just the manga.
one of my favourite things about ccs is that sometimes they lose a fight with a card and /thats okay/ they go back, go over their mistakes and win. i love it. it sets a good example
I do think the anime was definitely trying to push the length, but I think it worked out. In the manga, Sakura only had 19 cards compared to 52 in the anime. As someone who read the manga first, I enjoyed this change. I could feel Sakura getting stronger at a realistic pace, and like you said, the series isn’t very plot heavy. Sure, the constant interruptions and what seemed SLOW could be annoying, but I found the manga made everything seem too fast paced. And I felt it made Syaoran’s character growth especially more gradual and shown that he’s there for more than to just be Sakura’s eventual boyfriend.
One example is how in the manga, Syaoran first calls Sakura by her first name trying to find the Erase card during the school camping trip. (This doesn’t happen in the anime as far as I can remember) But he again calls her by her first name when she finally catches the last Clow Card. Yet, she still says it’s the first time. This shows how she is easily forgetful, and how she noticed because the two are close friends now. But, it felt a bit rushed because their relationship growth was much slower through the anime. Just my take on the anime’s pacing though
I agree the relationship being odd but I the pacing for Cardcaptor Sakura is pretty bad at the beginning
"too long for its own good," I was kind of hoping for it to be a hundred episodes at least. I mean I wouldn't mind to see main character grow up, like some animes like Naruto, Bleach and One Piece. Can't wait to see the new season of Cardcaptors this winter.
@@10tailedbijuu the dubs are
bad in my opinion, because they remove some of the major character arcs. And also, let’s be honest, the show sounds a little stupid in english. Sorry if this comment offends you, but i feel like the Japanese anime is way better
Yeah that's kind of how I felt watching it too lol. I could watch this freaking girl and her family's everyday life until she grew up and be happy. Card Captor Sakura is just a wonderful show and it deserves to go on as long as possible, and be given the full One Piece treatment.
Cardcaptor Sakura is such a brilliant series.
Currently re-watching it and it's still hold up very well.
The new dub in my opinion was good
Which "new dub"
Lol
I love how there's no transformations
Isn't it great when a show that holds a genre title slowly tweeks those specific tropes or downright messes with them? I haven't seen Cardcaptor Sakura yet but given the timing and my current mood, I'll definitely give it a watch. I recently finished rewatching my all time favorite Magical Girl show, "Princess Tutu", so I'm in need of something similar. "Tutu" plays with Magical Girl & Fairy Tale tropes so wonderfully - I have yet to see it's equal. Nothing - from the opening scene to the ending - is the same with this show. In just 26 episodes, everything from characterizations, goals, capabilities and self-view change. I found it so natural and moving that I can't survive the ending w/out tearing up. It's .... it's just worth much more attention then it has. Sorry, I ramble - that it all.
Wow. Cardcaptor Sakura to Sailor Moon seems to be what Yu Yu Hakusho was to Dragon Ball. I might actually check it out.
Do it!
DO. IT.
I didn’t see til February but it took a long time fi finish
Pretty sure you saw years ago
I first saw Cardcaptor Sakura when I was 23 in 2012, and I loved it. Now I'm gonna be 35 this year and I'm currently re-watching it.
It still has an impact on my heart.
CCS is straight up awesomeness. I watched it as a grown man and the innocent, cute life lessons really calmed me down after a stressful day. The best part is that there isn't even an evil villain. Just facing challenges and growing up.
What makes Sakura such great character is the great balance between the positive and negative aspects of her personality. She’s athletic, cheery, selfless and most simply and best of all, just a nice person. But she is also clumsy, a bit of a scaredy cat and has a temper.
One of my favourite running gags in the series is whenever her brother calls her a “Kaiju” which she will loudly and aggressively proclaim she is not.
I finished Cardcaptor Sakura! It was a wonderful show that I adore for the characters, costumes, animation, and nice story on Sakura being a cardcaptor. I agree with your points, and I do hope more people watch the show. And also, this review because it's amazing!
I do agree
I just want to say that I like how you mentioned Death Note in this video about Cardcaptor Sakura because I think that Death Note is like a blacker version of Cardcaptor Sakura as they both have the main concept of "ordinary school student finds a magical book and find out about the book's power, then that power makes their ordinary lives... well... not so ordinary. They also befriend the mysterious creatures who originally owned these books and like to eat. A _lot._ Plus, Studio Madhouse did the animation for both shows.
Now that you say that, I feel like they are very similar.
CCS, one of my favorite anime of all time
Interesting to know it’s my favorite til future boy conan took that title for me
Best Magical Girl Anime ever-Thanks for this. Been looking for CCS vids for a long time and yours rock. I now subscribe so keep it up!
14:49 I Love the flashback in the same episode. Anime has taught you well,
HOLD ON HOLD ON!!! Chihayafuru was directed by the same director of cardcaptor sakura?? Those two are some of my favourite animes and both have a spot secured in my heart
Great video, feels nice to have one of my favourites appreciated
I was feeling nostalgic about previous shows I used to enjoy when I was in my early teens. I remember watching Cardcaptor with my sister and I liked the atmosphere. It felt very comforting and welcoming. The characters have good chemistry between them.
''every family has quirks or oddities THAT family does''
I wouldn't have put it in better words. It makes characters feel more believable.
Great video I hope you continue doing content like this in the future.
I just recently found your channel, but I have to say, its really really good. I watched most of your reviwes by now and like a lot, how you do a good job explaining your points and having good examples. I hope to see more in the future despite not yet having huge views. And I said yet with intent :)
I love this series so much.
I was considering this show, thanks a lot for a very good review!
CCS being an introduction to CLAMP caused me some real tonal whiplash lmao
Loved your review of CCS! I wonder if you might be interested in reviewing Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles now, it’s another CLAMP show, and a LOT of the main cast are crossover characters from CCS.
one of my top ten fave animes
i loved this video!! cardcaptor sakura was the very first anime i saw at the age of 6, and it's still my all time favorite even as a 22 year old. honestly its such a great anime, and its a shame so many people dont even give it a try because they think its "just a magical girl show" meant for girls
Interesting to know
I loved this anime. It introduced me to the manga and the other works of CLAMP. I’ve just finished reading the latest volume in the Clear Card Hen and I even have the toy replica of the Clow cards, I just liked the Tarot art style in how the powers were represented.
All the songs that are played in this video kept me dancing the whole time😀
Great show. Good times.
Interesting
i still love this anime
Me too
This video needs more views, I've been looking for one like it for ages. Dying to see what you thought about clear card, since, imo, it lost most if not all the good points you mentioned.
Probably because many people don’t watch reviews as they used too
Heyyyyy, thanks for covering my favorite anime of all time! Here's to you perhaps maybe reviewing the Clear Card anime in the future!
Nice content bro.. Love it
Im sold, starting it right now.
Apparently one of the members of CLAMP, the team behind the manga (for the record, ive never watched the anime, im watching videos to see if i should get into it, if so do i watch dub or sub, etc.) designed so many outfits for Sakura, many of which never made it into the manga. I wonder if they used those designs for the anime?
I would've said "This is no Code Geass" but Death Note also works xD Loved the video!
Well you somehow appeared in my recommended even though I've never visited this channel and am not subscribed. I'm RoryBurrows from MAL btw.
Cardcaptor Sakura is my 2nd fav anime though so thanks for a video on it :D
Interesting
Ty for pronouncing Sakuras name correctly
Would love to see a Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju or Nadia: Secret of Blue Water review sometime :))
Although this is not the OG Magical Girl, but its theme, tone and subtlety are what defined Magical Girl Anime forever. And for the love of god, FUCK THE DUB!!
I mean I didn’t watch the English dub
Currently I’m in the process of rewatching this one.
I remember it as one of the first Anime I ever watched and it will always hold a special place in my heart.
Question though: do we know if the new season will be a continuation of the story from where the second film stopped?
Or is the movie going to be retconned?
The movie is going to be retconned. There was also an OVA released in September, that slightly changes the end of the series in order to conform to the manga's ending.
the anime is basically canon to the manga anyway, you won't be missing much
The manga is similar to the anime ending but the movie did give something to Sakura and salin’s romance
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles >>>
I'm showing this to my 8 year old nephew and he loves it. Despite people saying 'It's a girl show' or 'It's for little girls. Get him something for boys.' Just started Season '3'.
? Why, he could models himself to Li Shaoran. A magical boy 😂
Lol 😂
It would be so cool to see you do a review of death parade
Or food wars (or both)
Sakura's mom Natasha and Tomyo's/Madison's mom Samantha WERE NOT RELATED... THEY WERE SCHOOL FRIENDS!.
I know
You're Under Arrest.
Would love to get your opinion.
A series I've wanted to watch for years and am now trying to watch consistently.
I’v heard about this
I appreciate the effort and time you put into this review but I really wish you would’ve titled this video as “A Thorough Summary of...” or at least included the word “Spoilers”. People who look for reviews on anime just want to know a brief overview of the type of anime then why you would recommend it or what makes it worth watching or not. This 18 minute video made me feel like I had already watched the show and left few surprises with characters, and eliminates many surprises from story events. I will definitely remember to check the video time length before watching anymore reviews so that I can enjoy the prospective anime as much as possible.
Again, I do appreciate your effort on making this review and sharing it. Besides the oversharing of plot hooks and unnecessary details, I believe that your video is of high quality. So if you could cut the fat in future reviews, or give clear spoiler alerts, then it would be much better received and appreciated because it is a general, universal understanding that movie and show reviews are moreso for one’s opinion of it. Reviews in the format you are giving are expected out of products or services in a “Before You Buy” sort of way, where the critic gives you the item specs, what’s included and/or a quick tutorial on its use. It does not work so well for a series or movie, nor even a book. Please consider adding a spoiler notice. But no harm done. I’ll add it to my watch list and just wait a month or so until I’ve forgotten the details. However, thank you for your informed review.
Ah, finally you reviews CLAMP's works!. Say, besides CardCaptor Sakura, why dont you reviews XXXholics? You know CLAMP's universe are tied to each other, or compared Card Captor Sakura with Magical Ray Earth (CLAMP's another magic girls series), and CLAMP academy (it is magic-boys series 😂).
Seriously, the watanuki in XXXholics are suspected is Clow, the maker of Clow Card in CardCaptor Sakura.
If you read the xxxHolic manga, you know who Watanuki is. And it's not Clow, trust me.
I'm kind of curious because i checked your MAL and i saw that you haven't watched Nanoha yet, is it on your plan somewhere next? Because i just restartet reading the Vivid manga and the nostalgia hit me again with the recent development in the manga, but searching for reviews of Nanoha is incredible frustrating. Apart from Digibros franchise overview there is not much classic reviews of this staple of the magical girl genre (and in my opinion the best until Madoka).
I don’t really have any immediate plans for Nanoha, but I’m sure I’ll get around to it one day.
I know you want a comprehensive overview before you do your reviews, but maybe you can just start with the (more modern) movies that shorten and sum up the 1st & 2nd Nanoha seasons pretty well. I would also propose that before you do a Shaft month to do away some of the obvious choices to get to the more interesting stuff instead of having Madoka und Monogatari dominate everything anyway. :P
Her Brother calls sakura a Kaju very often for stomping around 🦖
I’m watching the original series and so far I’m gonna watch this video later
Damn I said this 4 years ago
Ive never thought she was a lesbian when i was watching this as a kid!!!! damn! childhood suddenly made 100 times better!
As much as I enjoyed the anime, with what it brings to the table as an adaption, I found the manga to much more accessible. Obviously by being manga it avoids the pacing issues and doesn't have padding to episodes and occasional filler that the anime added. It also is a lot more explicit the various romances, some of which got toned down or ignored in the anime. Not to mention the anime changed the ending for some reason, removing seemingly any reason for the shows events to have occured in the first place. Which isn't to say I disliked the anime, sound colour and animation add a lot and many locations like Sakura's house get fleshed out and feel like actual places, to say nothing of the amazing OPs and EDs.
I thought both are good
I noticed you haven't talked about her battle skills, I mean what's the point in having all those cards if she can't even do that much with them but apart from that it's a great series
what would be your playlist of episodes that needs to be watched and those that could be left out and when is the movie supposed to be watched amongst the order of the episodes ?
What surprises me is that Sakura isn’t a popular girl at school she just has a one friend
I'd like to see a review of Digimon Adventure and 02 , please . I LOVE them .
Sadly that didn’t happen
This might be a bit too soon to ask, but are you gonna make a video regarding the last arc of Gintama when it finishes?
Also, can you give some sort of ETA for the Shippuden Part of the Naruto franchise review?
1. Just depends. If I feel I have something substantial to say, sure. Otherwise, I'll just cover it in my usual season roundup video.
2. Not for a while. Months, certainly. I'm only about halfway through Shippuden, and I also need to determine exactly how I'm going to approach the video. I don't think stepping through each arc individually, as I did for the original series, will be as effective considering how long Shippuden is.
Fair enough then, i'd recommend skipping the filler arcs in Shippuden for the most part, because they are what you might expect, boring and excuse for studio pierrot to make these because they had no material to work with, and to make a cashcow of it, even after the manga had ended.
Also, are you thinking of watching Boruto? I also don't think it's worth your time for many reasons.
PS: Happy holidays.
I'm already skipping the filler, but thank you. No plans to watch Boruto at the moment. Happy holidays to you as well.
@@GrexEleven makes sense
I still prefer 💖the Cardcaptors English Dub opening and the series because I remember watching the original Cardcaptors back in 2002 and I did started to like this series from Nelvana because even though the series is from Japan but at least they have a proper theme song intro and ending too. I also prefer the character's voice and the dub of the story line because the original version of Cardcaptors has too many romance, crushes and gay feelings so I understand why Nelvana decided to cut a few scenes and dub the voices to make it suitable for kids👍. That's also why I buy thses DVDs from Nelvana as the Cardcaptors series were show on the, USA, Australia and the UK on CITV.
i was born in 1998...3/4 year old me never let this go
I was born in 1998 but I didn’t get into anime til 2013
In retrospect, Cardcaptor Sakura should have been called Salkura: The Japanese Version Of The American Sitcom, with magic on the sidelines
Lol
Took me til 2018 to watch this show for the first time and it was definitely one of my favorites now but the pacing at first gave me a bad impression but I don’t have an issue being long but the pacing for Cardcaptor Sakura is too slow at the beginning
When I watched Cardcaptor Sakura, I always thought that this is was high school drama from an American prospective. I wasn't aware that it was an a Japanese magical girl anime at the time...
Interesting to know but given the music I can see why you think so
This was so good that my bored 12 year old self watched both seasons in 6 days
Interesting
As for your argument of the series being 70 episodes “too long”; I find that your conclusion doesn’t take the medium into consideration. Cardcaptures was a series initially released on television. Why does that matter? Well reiterating information in a per-episode format is good for a long television show. You could go weeks without a new cardcaptors episode and forget previous plot details so maybe it was necessary?
Agreed
It’s kinda akward that syaoran has this tsurede attitude at Sakura but later on he falls for her
12:47 WRONG EXAMPLE BUDDY! A relationship between a teacher who is at minimum mid-20s and a student who is like 10 is creepy, your example is not creepy but just illegal in some places (due to power difference).
And I hope you review Death Note
I don’t think he has done it and never will
5:18 This bugged me 2 - u have the REST of your safety gear, yet u leave out the most IMPORTANT PIECE! 🪖
My very first anime and EVERYONE in my family hated it to a certain degree. My father disliked it because I wanted to dress up as her for Halloween. My stepmom hated it because it was "paganism." And my grandma hated it cause it was from Japan the place that stole her husband. While I never dressed up as her I did go has Daphne from Scooby-Doo armed with her staff when I was five.
Frosted Sun Chips your family sounds...fun.
I highly recommend anyone checking this show out for the first time not to watch the dub until at least the second movie. The voice acting for the re-dub of the original was TERRIBLE, and they of course cut out all LGBTQ+, and even changed some important things like how Syaoran and Meilin never refer to Sakura by her name until episode 59 for Syaoran(Clear Card for Meilin), which is an important step in the SakuSyao relationship when he and Sakura do start using each other's given names. In the re-dub, they just have the Li's call her Sakura from the start, and everyone uses Syaoran's first name. They also can't seem to say "Syaoran" for some reason, and keep calling him "Sharon". The second movie was dubbed by Pioneer well before the 2012 re-dub, and Clear Card retains most of the same cast as the Funimation dub of Clear Card. Pioneer and Funimation do a much better job retaining the culture and relationships in translation, and the voice actors are able to actually ACT.
Couldn’t say anything about the English dub honestly
There's one negative on this show you should have mentioned but didn't: the two English dubs.
Lol 😂
@@10tailedbijuu Yes, the clear card dub is great, but the second bad dub is the Animax dub.

I remember this show being promoted and boy the dub was so bad. Makes it worst when I found out how horrible edited the dub was.
Honestly, I'm not that excited for the new Cardcaptor Sakura anime; the fact that it follows the manga continuity and not the anime undermines any enjoyment I might glean from it. Not to mention the fact that the new manga arc this is supposed to adapt is absolutely terrible in my opinion, from what little I've been able to see. The plot moves at a glacial pace, and everything feels like a retread of the original series, but not as well-written. Which is not surprising, considering how far Clamp has fallen since their glory days. There's not even all that much available to adapt, so this is probably going to be stuffed with filler; which undermines the entire point of not setting this in the anime continuity.
Actually the new anime follows the old anime. Characters unique to the anime have been brought up.
Years later I don’t think a lot of people talk about the sequel as much
