Man this podcast really hit home. My uncle just committed suicide 2 weeks ago and left behind 2 little boys and their mom's a mess. Also a family history of depression including many battles of my own. We need to talk about it more, we are not invincible.

For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.

Thanks for discussing suicide - that and other mental health problems need to be talked about. Especially by men. Especially by the "man's man" kind of guys. Lets have that conversation. There's a 'board of positively' outside the canteen at my work, covered with various cliches and platitudes. Not once has anyone remarked on my disposition in the 18 months I've been there... well, not to my face anyway. Mental health awareness.... yeah. There's no shame from where I stand, no one cares enough for there to be any shame. (I'm not suicidal, that passed a long time ago, now I'm just numb, but safely so. Just in case, you know, no tone of voice)

I've listened to portions of a bunch of podcasts from Jocko and Tim and such along with reading books and watching videos on improving at all the things I do and I've left myself really good at a lot of things that aren't important and extremely frustrated. Jocko's video titled "good" and something I read from Mark Manson (I think) about some important person in history accomplishing nothing before deciding that for 1 year everything was his fault and if he still felt the way he did after a year he would kill himself on day 366. Everything I've learned is now being put into effect slowly and effectively now building in what works and removing what doesn't. I can tell already based on the past few weeks and now watching this and taking a few days to get through the hole thing that my entire life is really going to be different. Thank you so much Tim, Jocko, Echo Charles, and anyone else who reads this who puts out content truly intending to help other people. On to the podcast about the book of 5 rings!

I love the two things they talked about people don’t quite grasp about depression. The first is the distorted thinking. When you’re in that state all your horrible feelings, even though most of the times not true or trivial, seem like concrete reality. Like a giant monolith. Secondly, you don’t want to die you just want to end the pain.

Jokko looks Tim right in the eyes 90% of the time. Tim is inside his head gathering facts half the time when talking with the other 50% of the time looking at Jokko.

That's a good analysis. One thing to keep in mind it is that talking about your own mental illness is horribly uncomfortable. I'm guessing Tim is a little more confident when talking about other subjects. Even later in the interview when they are talking about other things I'm sure he's still uncomfortable.

    • @lonelyb9661

Jeffrey Crowe Definitely possible. Jokko is just the opposite extreme that it really sticks out.
I don't know either man enough to say one way or another, but Ferris seems to have a more inward looking mind while Jokko is more of an in your face motivating leader type. Seems like Ferris learned alot by study and reflection. Jokko, on the other hand, learned more by action and trial and error. Two different approaches to lifelong learning, one bookish the other hands on. Maybe I'm reading too much from one podcast.
I never checked out Tim Ferris' show where he tackles new skills in like 30 days or something. I think I will.

I was stressed to the point of having shingles one in jr. high and once in highschool. The things that helped me were 1. Set a one year goal. I have a home gym and I started dong 5k's. Just for me. 2. Suplement, at least 5-htp. 3. Yoga or pilates once a week 3. Fail in something bigger than me 4. No whiskey, drugs, crutch mon-fri. Reply to my comment if you have questions.

It's good that alpha males like Tim and Jocko can reach out to other men living with the daily nightmare of depression and pull them back from it.
Too many of us think talking about it is a cardinal sin of weakness and die needlessly.
Your brothers are there for you gentlemen.

Having the three goals is important. I ended up focusing so much on my job that it would get me down when I had a bad quarter or day. If I then finish work and run a PB 10k or even finish a 10k that weight is lifted

I have a Stoic Wisdom app on my phone. Most of the daily quotes are memorable and applicable. Seneca and Scipio were and are exemplary.

Wish jocko would have me on his podcast to talk about this subject and my experiences that could help other suicidal people. More combat veterans are killing themselves at an alarming rate. No one in the VA or mental health field seem to understand what a suicidal person is going through or willing to help

The scariest part about suicide is the fact that you truly think it would be less painful than being alive. On top of that, the people who tell everyone may actually be depressed but are unlikely to kill themselves, they are searching for help (which is a good thing for them) but the people who stay in private with their thoughts and plans and do not tell anyone, are more likely to commit the act.

If you study great men, you’ll notice this pattern: they have usually suffered extreme sufferings. Abandonment, imprisonment, persecution, injury, illness, torture, and/or mental illness. Suffering must be a valuable commodity or this would not be so. I really hope everyone suffering knows not only are they not alone, but if they endure they will discover suffering can be some of the most meaningful improvement you ever run across. You are not a burden at these times, you are a gift to humankind in the making.

I am very empathetic to Tim Ferriss. I have had times where I have had to fight my demons so to speak. But I am here and willing to work through this. Thanks for this video and I am glad this is out for people to really understand what suicide is about.
