Thank you for mentioning the imprisonment of red soldiers at 44:30. My wife's grandfather was one of those prisoners. He was taken as a POW by the Nazis, and although he was Jewish, his blonde hair and blue eyes allowed him to pretend he wasn't, and survive. After 3 years, he was liberated from the camp but was then sent to a gulag for 10 years until the death of Stalin...something about being a traitor for not dying in the war.
He lived until 91, always a smile on his face. The man was tough as nails.

The spectrum of what Russia considered "betrayal" in WWII was as broad as the day is long. You can see its remnants today in Putin's hunting and killing of former soviet spies.

TRUTH! Too many people are unaware of how paranoid Stalin was. We of course now have his correspondence records where he mentions the soviet people cannot trust the Red Army POW's because they have now seen the "western spoils" and have now become one of the "bourgeois".
Now historians call this the 1st peek behind the Iron Curtain, because at the time of the conference, which signed over the return of RA POWs, the allied leaders were informed RA soldiers were pleading to remain because they would killed.

    • @monkeyboy275bobo8

Papa Stalin always used to say: "There are no Soviet prisoners of war, only traitors"
The soldiers knew that surviving enemy imprisonment wont make their lifes any better and they most likely will end up beeing executed or working in a gulag in the siberian ice. Even decades after Stalins death these people were still considered second class veterans and in general treated as traitors.

How can someone so well versed in the evils and atrocities of human history not make the connection? If you're in it even the most learned can miss the forest for the trees. I worked with a woman from Bosnia in a bakery many years ago. She told me about sneaking into harvested potato fields across from her home. Her best friend was by her side. She told me, “one minute I was taking to my friend, we were laughing - and the next, she was gone.” Her friend had stepped on a mine that the soldiers had buried in the fields after harvesting was finished. She told me, “It was life, and that’s how life was there. So now I am here.” How I wish those voices of past and present experience could be louder than the ignorant shouts of today.

Goggins talks _a lot_ about Hell Week. Jocko talks about how Hell Week was a joke, and that people that constantly harp about Hell Week probably are too [more or less: not a direct quote from Jocko, but if you listen to a lot of his Q & A regarding Hell Week, you're aware of his feelings about it. He found it extremely easy and said it's a joke compared to other training they do. If I remember right, I think he said workups were way harder than BUD/S / Hell Week].
Have you heard Goggins talk about his reputation in the Teams? He was apparently extremely polarizing. A lot of Jocko's lessons explicitly talk about not being polarizing.
In a Facebook or Instagram live, he [Jocko] said something along the lines of, "Goggins is a great athlete, and he had a life-story interview with Rogan, so I don't think there's anything to talk about." Not an exact quote, but that's its essence.
Jocko is aware of David Goggins-I _guarantee_ there's more to why he hasn't had him on. Maybe it's related to Goggins' Teams reputation.

Thank you for this vital interview. It gave me the courage finally to purchase Gulag Archipelago. I have listened to Dr. Peterson talk about it often, and I recall one time he said something like "By the way I don't recommend it," referring to how grueling the read is. I have been afraid to confront the information it delivers, because I was never sure I had the courage to face it and not collapse into despair. But now I know I must.
