Actually, imo, it's one of the best translation from the VO in a disney song, and it's filled with references to our culture too, it's translated in such a way you'd believe it was written by French people in the first place, it's really nicely done ☺

Normally the english version of this song is my favorite, but the way they translated the lyrics to french is just... Holy shit, no other language managed to reach such a level of intensity, creepiness and overall obsession like that. Some of my favorite bits:
    - "when she dances, insolent, do her eyes of fire inflame and haunt me?"
    - the simple fact they used the word "bacchanalian" in this version is just so fitting... That's certainly a word Frollo would use to describe Esmeralda
    - "hell is turning my flesh to black"
    - "heaven must punish me"
    - rhyming "our Father" with "Lucifer" is one of the ballsiest things I've seen, it's so good
    - "let a curtain of fire be her shroud" - just the imagery of this phrase is so strong.
    - "be mine or my passion will drag you down to hell" - this is probably my favorite bit. From the languages I've seen it's implied that divine judgement will destroy her. "Be mine or you will burn" in English, "choose my tender kiss or burning in hell" in Portuguese, but here he's saying he'll personally drag her down; not the forces of heaven or hell, he, himself will do it.
    - "make her concede herself to me" - not just hand her to me, but make her change her mind, throw herself willingly at me. That is so dark!
    Anyway, love this version

I found the translation of "L'enfer noicrit ma chair" a bit iffy. I thought "'Blackens my flesh" or "Charrs my flesh" would have been more fitting.

I love the subtle differences between the English and French versions. In English, Frollo is *insisting* that his creepy behaviors towards Esmeralda aren’t his fault. In French he’s *asking* whether it is his fault or not and then the Mea Culpa comes in and he asks *why* he’s being blamed. It’s such a small change that makes this song, already amazing as written, have that much more impact.

    • @AuxaneST

Catholic guilt would not have made this OK to a French audience. We don't have this Puritan instinct of "it's the fault of the object of desire for dressing that way etc" as strongly accepted here.

@@krystaloftheshores Latin hellfire is pretty much "just" translated english. There is no translator whose job was to find the nuance and to make something shine in it.
The movie in french is a tone darker than the movie in english because Frollo seems more "reasonable", human. He is still a vile bastard but in a light that makes you understand why he thinks he isn't. But honestly this version is way less for kids that the original.
The english version is more straight up saying Frollo is a classic villain and that's in the subtext that you may or may not come to the same conclusion as in the french one. Made more for kids.
But if you want the darkest version just get the book "Le bossu de notre dame" written by Victor Hugo.

Hellfire is an incredibly intense and well-written song in both the English and French versions.
One of the most notable differences between the two versions is the way that the word "inferno" is translated. In the French version, the word is translated as "enfer," which can mean both "hell" and "inferno." This adds an additional layer of meaning to the song, as it suggests that Frollo's inner turmoil is akin to a fiery inferno that is consuming him from within. Additionally, the lyrics in the French version are more poetic and expressive, which helps to convey the depth of Frollo's turmoil and the complexity of his inner conflict.

02:18 “Linceul” in French is another word for veil, which pious Catholic women normally wear to revere God… It really reminds us how deep the Catholic faith runs in France.

Bravo, franchement ;)

    [Prêtres:]
    Confiteor Deo, omnipotente.
    Beatae Mariae, semper Virgini.
    Beato Michaeli Archangelo.
    Sanctis apostolis omnibus Sanctis
    [Frollo:]
    Beata Maria,
Je clame que mon âme est pure,
De ma vertu j'ai droit d'être fier
    [Prêtres:]
    Et tibi Pater
    [Frollo:]
    Beata Maria,
Mon cœur a bien plus de droiture,
Qu'une commune vulgaire foule de traîne-misère
    [Prêtres:]
    Quia peccavi nimis
    [Frollo:]
    Kyrie Eleison
    [Frollo :]
    Seigneur, pitié pour elle
    Seigneur, pitié pour moi
    Fais qu'elle s'offre à moi,
    Ou elle brûlera.

    Characterization differences
The novel's characters are portrayed in a more intricate and nuanced way, which may make them less immediately likable than their counterparts in Disney's film adaptation.
However, this complexity allows for a deeper exploration of their motivations and personal stories, giving readers a deeper understanding of their actions throughout the story. Take the following characters, for example.
Esmeralda : In the novel, Esmeralda is portrayed as a seductive and manipulative character, while in the Disney film, she is portrayed as kind and compassionate.
Laverne, Clopin and Archdeacon : The characters Laverne, Clopin and Archdeacon are not present in the novel, but are added in the Disney film to give a happier tone.
Captain Phoebus : In the novel, Phoebus is a villainous character who is manipulative and abusive towards Esmeralda. In the Disney film, he is portrayed as a heroic character who falls in love with Esmeralda.
    Plot differences
The novel and the Disney film have some notable differences in their respective plots. While the film follows a more linear plot, the novel delves deeper into the characters' internal struggles. Additionally, the novel contains several subplots that are not present in the film.
For example, in the novel, the Court of Miracles is a place where outcasts and criminals gather. But in the Disney film, it is portrayed as a magical place where outcasts are "children of God." The novel's ending is also much darker than the Disney film. In the novel, Quasimodo dies of starvation and Esmeralda is executed, while in the Disney adaptation, they both survive and live happily ever after.
So overall, while the Disney film is a fairly faithful adaptation of the novel, it's important to note that the two are quite different in terms of tone, characterization, and plot.
