So much depth in this movie. God WAS listening. God WAS helping Frollo. As soon as he prayed to the Virgin Mary for help against temptation, Esmeralda was gone. She escaped, and so the temptation was physically not there anymore. It's almost as if God has said "Hey, maybe you are honest. Maybe this really ISN'T your fault, maybe the temptation IS too strong, so here, I removed it for you". All Frollo had to do was literally nothing, and he would've been just fine. But instead he chose to commit genocide and set an entire city ablaze looking for the very thing he sought protection against, and thus died, burnt by the flames that he himself created. As others have said, he rejected his last chance of redemption. I miss when Disney cartoons packed so much meaning behind them. Now an entire movie could be summed up by "Everyone thinks I'm bad but I did this good thing so now everyone thinks I'm ok."
Right?!?! Also the guard covered in light personifying God giving Frollo one last chance is just 👨🍳💋. I miss when villains were EVIL as heck! We need more realistic villains like Mother Gothel and Frollo, because their evil doings can be, and ARE seen in ordinary citizens, which make them infinitely scarier, because they're not malevolent, powerful wizards, they're humans manipulating, lying, and excusing horrid behavior to get what they want.

But as expected Frollo turned his back on redemption and was left to drown in his own darkness…. Damnit Disney you used to be so deep….
In an interview with the VA, this is the general idea of just that: the light upon the soldier is a message from god. Just trying to give him one last out, but Frollo is to obsessed to notice.
Wobbegong, Disney in the 1990s Used to Not be afraid of going Deep and hard on the Drama and Dark Themes and Subject Matter 90% of the time. Disney Animation Today needs to go back to the Renaissance when they were serious of telling original stories and not being afraid of going hard on the drama. That was true Disney Magic, the 1990s was the true Cinema Magic that Disney used to be, but now it seems Disney wants to get rid of that stuff. In favor of live action remakes and cringe worthy sequel franchises, it seems Disney has forgotten why they were even a company in the first place since the golden age of Hollywood.
Yeah, his prayer was answered, but he's so deep in his sins that he doesn't realize it. God gave him exactly what he prayed for. All he had to do was give up the search and that would have been the end of it. But at this point, he wants things done *his* way.
@rossmerchant8435 your right, but back in the old days of the 1930s to 1990s, people wanted to see masterpieces. Masterpieces, no matter what genre it is, are the money makers, not cheesy superhero movies and live action remakes, but now that's all gone, I don't know why people waste their money on stuff that should be box office Bombs and not truly powerful masterpieces that tell great original stories... that's what's wrong with Hollywood today

@@weedes0001I don't think Frolo *would* have prayed. He made it clear, he never truly understood the idea of mercy. Though he made platitudes at the end of this song, his conception of God had nothing to do with mercy; only hatred and retribution. It is the nature of the Hypocrite: as God made us in His image, they make their own God in theirs. One who shares their pettiness and arrogance. It is the true reason for the Third Commandment. For what higher blasphemy could be committed, then to do the Devil's work while waving Christ's banner? Frolo, in the moments of his death, would not ask for mercy. Not sincerely, at least. He was long past conceiving of such a thing, even towards him.

His prayer was even answered, just not in the way he truly wanted so he rejected the messenger calling him an 'idiot'. Considering angels are literally messengers of God... Frollo really just blamed God for his failings, was forgiven for it, and spat in his face.
Just so everyone knows, when the red spirits said “Mea Culpa”, it means “My Fault” which means they wanted Frollo to confess his sins but he instead blames his fault on Esmeralda. Also when the guard opens the door, the light behind the guard was actually the light from Heaven, Frollo was given a last chance to be forgiven by God and to let Esmeralda go but his decision made him preventing his entry to Heaven by turning to the fire.
The one thing about Vollo that stands out strong is how his hypocrisy shines through his fake venture of faith. He uses his faith to smite others; and believes himself above others. A major aspect of the Christian faith is that none are free of sin; and those who think themselves pure or higher in faith than others are the worst kinds of sinners who wear Christ.
When I was younger, I avoided Hunchback like the plague, and I suppose it's just as well I did, because this would've scared me shitless. But in the original book, Frollo is a very kind and caring archdeacon who took care of Quasimodo out of genuine pity, but his lustful desires for Esmerelda caused him to spiral down into evil insanity. Also, his death in the book is much less creepy than in the movie. We know what happens in the movie, but in the book Quasimodo simply pushes him off the cathedral to his death. Disney changed Frollo to a Judge to make it simpler and to avoid religious controversy. Just putting that out there
"Disney changed Frollo to a Judge to make it simpler and to avoid religious controversy." And to change the plot progression as well. They had to have an absolute antagonist to avoid the tragedy in the original story(you know, Phoebus wasn't the kind guy we see here)

I agree, Frollo is much more complex in the novel and thus a lot more chilling. When I first read it as a lovelorn teenager, I related so profoundly to Frollo that it made me feel physically sick. :C
Something disney did that was really smart though was having God technically smite him at the end, which took out the remaining controversy and added a lot more depth to frollo's death.
4 years later, but if you don't mind. The choir is singing a version of a prayer called "Confiteor", which translates to "confession". It starts with the choir saying "I confess to the almight god, to the holy virgin mary, to michael archangel, to the holy apostles and to all saints", and then Frollo starts singing. Mixed with his words of pride, the choir continues: "that I have sinned in action and in thought." Then while Frollo sings "it is not my fault", the choir is saying "it is my fault, my most grievous fault". And then at the end, when Frollo is singing his threats to Esmeralda, the choir is singing "god have mercy, god have mercy". MariktheGunslinger They weren't at this level. A level that featured a religious man who had lost his way in pride and lust, and him coming to terms with it by burning down a whole city just to have a chance to have sex. Which is sort of a good thing, Disney would lose a lot of money if it was all super dark all the time. But I'm sure no one would argue against a few more of these gems.
MariktheGunslinger Froezen REALLY isn't that good. I honestly don't know why it has so much hype. It's enjoyable fluff. Wreck-It Ralph is pretty good but not not like this.
MariktheGunslinger As Asgard314 say's it's not at all at this level. They would never even mention something that can relate to sex in the new disney movies. This has got so much more to offer. The new disney movies are too much just entertaining.
Frida Trolle But like I said, it's not necessarily a bad thing. Entertaining can be fun. In fact, I'm watching Frozen right now and it's by far the most entertaining thing I've seen from Disney in years. It'd just be nice to see a wide range of movies from them.
Apparently in the DVD commentary they note that the animators were worried the studio would push back for it being to dark. But to their surprise both the CEO and head of Disney animation loved it immediately.
I did hear from Mason idk's vid that the one thing they did do to make it a bit more kid friendly is to make absolute certain that Esmeralda in the fire could not in anyway seem to be nude.
It’s crazy how most Disney songs on UA-cam have that “comments and mini player not available for kid videos” and this doesn’t have it or the Plagues from Prince of Egypt
Hellfire really is something else. Dark, evil, sinful, twisted and just... perfect. In my opinion, Hellfire contains the real spirit of Victor Hugo's Frollo.
@@yourfriendlyneighborhoodla2091 There's actually truth to this line. "The Spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." (Matthew 26:41) Sin and the Devil are incredibly strong enemies against man, but only as strong as God allows them to be. Fun Fact- Frollo is actually more evil in the movie than in the book. Usually Disney tones down the villains based on book villains. Nope. Not this time. They made him worse. _Which is why I love this movie._
Making Frollo more evil is actually a bit of a cop-out. In the original novelette by Victor Hugo, Frollo IS the priest of Notre Dame. Leaving that detail in would have upset many a Catholic around the world.
Two things: 1) This movie has the most underrated soundtrack of all time. 2) Frollo has always been one of the scariest Disney villains to me, because he's the most realistic. These kinds of people exist in the real world - maybe not exactly like Frollo is in this movie, but there are people in the world who will go to whatever ends they think justify their means, and they will do it all in the name of religion.
They definitely lack such majestic cheekbones as Frollo, and probably aren’t as eloquent broadway singers either And if someone like that does exist please make a movie about them it’ll make millions
@@SunnyLovetts No religion is free from extremists, it seems to be a fact of humanity that no matter what belief system we follow, if there are enough of us following it, there will be those who take it too far and become obsessive or use it as an excuse for their actions, their desires, who manipulate it as a means to an end.
I think the Captain was replying sarcastically. Either that, or he just humoured his boss, deciding that he wouldn’t pursue the topic any further than he already had.
The “Devil so much stronger than a man” part really sums up this song. He’s falling into evil more and more, but he blames it on the devil or someone else rather than himself, saying he’s not strong enough to fight his own actions.
_Technically,_ God did make the devil stronger than man. One of the main points of Christianity that many don't understand is that you *really cannot* fight temptation on your own. So Frollo is correct in that it isn't his fault that he can't fight his burning desires. But God already knows that, and offered to fight on our behalf. We don't have to fight a losing battle if we let someone more powerful that the devil fight sin for us. *Frollo isnt at fault for being tempted. He's at fault for taking matters into his own hands instead of praying for a change of heart.* Sin unfortunately makes us rationalise evil using very real truths. It's sick and twisted, but the only antidote is asking God for a change of heart. The more of the Bible you understand, the more of a masterpiece this song becomes.
@@taki1255the soldier could be seen as god saying " hey man i got rid of the temptation" and he responds with basically "shut up god i take back everything that i said"
@@taki1255On one hand, that is true. The bible does say that the devil is stronger than humans, makes sense, he is a former angel. Obviously. On the other hand, the devil does not exist, so the fault is entirely on humans for their sins.

On the Quran it's said that on the day of judgement the devil will be there, and say something like: "Don't blame me, I spoke and you chose to listen." Does it say something similar on the Bible? I hope it doesn't come off as rude. Frollo isn't in fault for his temptations, but he chose to sin. God gave him an oportunity, to learn to be a better person and take actions into it instead of praying with no will to change for the better. Atleast this is my point of view and I don't know if you might agree or not but I respect yours.

Everyone always says something like, “Frollo is just having the best reaction to a boner!” 😂😂😂 But, it’s so much more than that. Yes, she does arouse him, but it’s not “just a boner.” The thing about Frollo is that he ardently hates gypsies and he thinks they are full of sin. This is wrath. He also considers himself above everyone else and claims he has the moral high ground. This is pride. But when is wrath and pride combine with his lust for Esmeralda, he spirals out of control (as if he wasn’t already). It is simply too much for him to handle. Also, he knows damn well that what he is doing is wrong, but he doesn’t care, for he is too full of himself to care.
It's actually a very important part of the film. The main point of the scene is that while he had a prejudice against gypsies, he developed romantic feelings for one, resulting in him going mad. A part of the film's purpose is to discourage prejudice. Here Frollo feels like something is wrong with him because he finds that he has feelings for a person that he deems to be inferior, and that really screwed him up psychologically.
I think that he does care. Frollo is tortured by sin, conscience, his past, whatever you want to call it, as embodied by the hooded red figures. He feels dedicated to his religion and his god, but he doesn't understand how that omnipotent and omnipresent god could put him in his (self-contrived, sexist and selfish) anguished position. Esmeralda is obviously the object here, to be either possessed by him or destroyed, but as you say his is aware of the 'wrongness' of this desire.
I think he definitely cares. He has never thought he has lived a life of sin. And to fall in love with and desire a woman that he thinks is full of just that makes him start to fear himself. He's confused and praying to Maria to help him, but all the sin inside his head tells him no (It's your fault). So he does care. A lot. He desperately wants to be seen as holy by the eyes of Notre Dame and not sinful at all, and he'll do anything to get it. Even if it means burning down all of Paris to do so.
I was raised in a catholic family. Church every Sunday, that sort of thing. Folo's le motif incorporates a lot of Latin lyrics that a lifetime of church-going had made me familiar with. So when I heard them during Hellfire, even if my 8-year-old mind didn't know what they meant, the intent was clear; Frollo is a perversion of organized religion and a prime example of what happens when a "divinely sanctioned" authority goes to your head...
Nathaniel J. Nelson this poor one quotes from the Guttenberg English translation of the book : “I’ll find you again!” “I do not want that devil of a man to find me,” thought Gringoire; and he ran after Dom Claude. “Stay, monsieur the archdeacon, no ill-feeling between old friends!..." the movie made frollo a minister, i e a government official, and the archdeacon a separate character. your point however is still well taken in contrast one thinks of the more righteous priest in Les Miserables who gave Valjean the candlesticks
I think if they made him a priest, that would cloud the message you mentioned, because then it would become a bashing of Catholicism in most people's minds, taking away from the core message of self righteousness and focus on the evil of religion. Don't get me wrong, self righteousness can come with the territory of religious authority, but point is that christianity isn't to blame for Frollos behavior, it's he himself. The same character could be portrayed ass Jewish but still be a self righteous bastard.
"Alan Menken, write for us a light, Broadway-style score for Beauty and the Beast." ...receives many Oscars. "Alan Menken, write for us a Broadway-ish Latin Mass, and if you could include the Mea Culpa as a counter melody, that'd be great." ...receives nothing.
@@adamcarpenter3625 the composition of the soundtrack it's inspired by Broadway musicals but what he's trying to say it's that the same composer made a great soundtrack (but still by the numbers) for Beauty and the Beast and the movie won the Oscar for the best original song, then he creates this wonderful masterpiece for The Hunchback and didn't won anything

Phebus: I see... *Frollo walks away; Phebus grabs guard* Phebus: Was he singing about killing women last night? Guard: Yup. Phebus: Again? Guard: Afraid so. Phebus: Well there goes the damn neigborhood
Walter Kovacs hey walter i just watched a movie about you. Watchmen. I know it's not technically about you but you're the only reason i actually watch it.
I like how it starts off pleasant and reverent like Frollo thinks he is, but gradually becomes more bombastic, dark, hellish and sinister- what he really is deep down as the song goes on.
I admire the use of the first half of the Catholic Confiteor prayer as a counterpoint in this song! 0:00 - Confiteor Deo omnipotenti (I confess to Almighty God) 0:08 - beatae Mariae semper Virgini (to blessed Mary ever Virgin) 0:18 - beato Michaeli Archangelo (to blessed Michael the Archangel) 0:24 - sanctis Apostolis [Petro et Paulo] (to the Holy Apostles [Peter and Paul]) 0:28 - omnibus Sanctis (to all of the Saints) 0:47 - et tibi Pater (and to you, Father) 0:57 - quia peccavi nimis (that I have sinned exceedingly) 1:09 - cogitatione, (in thought,) 1:19 - verbo et opere (word, and deed) 1:43 - mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa (through my fault, through my fault, through my most grevious fault) It's amazing and incredible.
I find Frollo's gestures at 2:50 to be kind of funny I think because at this point the guard's interruption has reminded you that this is basically just an old man alone in the dark, gesturing menacingly toward his fireplace.
I love Frollo's reaction at 1:30 lol, it's like he comes upon some horrible realization right in that moment. And gotta love how he tells the man to get out and then returns to his song LOL. Such an evil piece of crap, but have to admit that his singing voice is golden.
Best Disney movie of all time. The villain was so great because he was too human... and I can understand why Frollo never saw evil within himself, and that's what makes a person like him so terrifying.
Keru Sakurako You're wrong. The religious stuff in the story would cause nothing more than a million comments on tumblr and youtube pages, the prostitution could be played subtly (maybe no "Lovely Ladies" song), and... other than that I fail to see what the problem would be.
Dread Baron Eh, Gaston was a nice twist on the normal hero of stories, but there's just something about having a character's motivation be sexual frustration IN A KID'S MOVIE that is just amazing.
He's such a good villain because he's being the exact opposite of what he's supposed to be. His entire trade (if you call it that) is to serve the God and the people, but first and foremost God. He is supposed to try and help as many people get to heaven as possible, and to guide them all along the way. But he turns around and becomes the exact opposite. Instead of serving the people and God, he serves himself and literally states that he's willing to burn down all of paris. The symbolism is quite amazing, as he falls from a priest of God (not that he was ever a good one but whatevs) to a self serving coward. He even blames God, saying that it's not his fault because God made the devil so strong. This movie adds brilliance regardless of who is watching, but I do also like it's last little piece that kind of solidifies that this is not an anti-Catholic movie, when essentially God casts Frollo into the fire when Frollo says that "He shall smite the wicked and cast them into the fires of hell", falls over, grabs the statue on the church, which snarls at him. That's the part that I find takes away any anti Catholic controversy that might have existed otherwise within this movie.
Mines the horned king from "The Black Cauldron" I mean good god, his design was just freaking awesome, and his plans something straight out of a sci-fy movie!
I like the comparisons/contrasts between Quasimodo and Frollo's "imaginary friends" as both deal with how they deal with internal conflicts. Quasimodo's comical gargoyles are supportive of his welfare constantly in their own ways, have distinct looks/personalities/desires outside of what they represent for their given roles and may or may not be real depending on the belief that Quasimodo made them up to make up for his lack of actual companionship before Esmeralda. Their music number is more of a light-hearted, jazzy beat that contrasts with the rest of the movie and make a lot of references of media ahead of the time period. Frollo's on the other hand, are all uniformed red beings of foreboding dark ambiguity with no visual differences in their forms, don't interact with him aside from trying to make him humble, vanish just as quickly as they appeared and are clearly a representation of his growing insanity. Basically, a manifested jury to justify his hypocritical beliefs. They only appear in the darkest song piece with a monotonous Latin chanting with imagery closer to the time period.
The background chanting is actually a catholic prayer for penitence and confession. He is denying his guilt while the background singers sing "I confess to almighty God and to you my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned. Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault..." The hooded figures appear on the "through my fault" part shouting "mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa" while Frollo keeps giving reasons why his actions are justified. (Its not my fault, if in God's plan, He made the devil so much stronger than a man" The symbolism is just
My favorite disney villain. The most terrifying thing about him is that he uses his faith to justify his actions. He asks for mercy... he uses his religion to justify all of the evil that he does. I mean... how many times in history has this very theme played out. Hunchback has so many deep themes that I didn't really appreciate until I was older. The music in this movie brings me to tears every time I watch!
Fun Fact: The Latin chanting is a Catholic prayer for Penitence and Confession. Playing on the scene as Frollo justifies his deeds even as the chanting grows. It's "I confess to Almighty God and to you my Brothers and Sisters that I have sinned Through my Fault, Through my Faults..." If you can see the Subtitles of the Song you'd see just how much the scene hammered his Hypocrasy. How he uses his Faith to Justify his acts as his same faith is literally telling him to Stop this
The best part is the guard is supposed to be a message from God- that He removed the temptation as Frollo asked, and yet still Frollo still pursues it because he never honestly wanted to be free from it in the first place
Hellfire really stuck with me as a kid, the instrumentals sounded so amazing it kept playing in my head over and over again until I found the movie again as a teen
Frollo: Never mind. Get out, you idiot... Guard: (leaves) Other guard: How did he take it? Guard: Not good. He was singing to the fireplace about her before I went in. Other guard: Shit, again? We really need to hold an intervention for him.
Guard:... Other guard:... Guard: Man can sing tho. Other guard: Oh, definitely. Guard: Deadly Horny, but THAT VOICE! Other guard: what is he? 60? 70? Guard: 36. Other guard: 36! Guard: Yeah, 36. Other guard: his complain about the girl when he has THAT VOICE AT HIS AGE?!? Guard: yup Other guard: Man, I know of 7 girls who would kill for a man with a voice like that! Guard: it's a shame he looks twice his age and has a murder boner for a specific gypsy girl.
I think "I had a little trouble with the fireplace" was probably the funniest thing Frollo could have said after performing the most dark and powerful song Disney has written thus far
Back when villains WERE villains. Frollo and Mother Gothel will always be my favorites, cause they were actually evil and their traits, qualities, and ways of evil can be seen in every day humans.
2:42 "Get out, you idiot!-" YOU INTERRUPTED MY INCREDIBLE SONG ABOUT MY SINFUL FEELINGS, ASSIGNING BLAME, AND CONFLICTING MORALS THAT COULD POTENTIALLY JEOPARDIZE MY SOUL'S SALVATION!!! HOW DARE YOU DISTURB THIS MOMENT!!! (resumes song) Next morning: "I had a little trouble with the fireplace." X'D
At the beginning when he is praying, he is looking up. After the "guard" tells him the gypsy is gone and Frollo tells the "guard" to get out, he is then looking down and praying to the "Hellfire". You can watch this 100 times and pickup new things each time. Its amazing. I so miss classic disney.
"It's not my fault! If in God's plan... He made the Devil so much stronger than a man!" These lines are simply the best. I can't get tired of listening to them. The whole song is a masterpiece, but this... Oh God, have mercy.
I think there's a lot of Hunchback in Prince of Egypt although there were less constraints on Dreamworks and so they could go all out with the darker elements (but Jeffrey Katzenberg definitely had to have been taking notes watching HoND because the similarities are just way too strong for it to be a coincidence)
CrimsonCeltCherokee The way the game played out had to change the original story too much. It sort of killed the point of Frollo since his character didn't develop like another boss might have.
'Guard! Get out of here! I'm trying to perform showtunes! And while you're at it bring in the guy who made this fireplace. I'm not quite sure it's supposed to be doing this!"
When Frollo was interrupted in his "singing moment," and he's like, "Nevermind, get out," I'm sure he was thinking, 'Get out, I'm in the middle of singing to myself, you're embarrassing me. I might have to start over.' Lol
Cr0nosGold3n It is entirely inappropriate to judge a figure of the past whose moral set is alien to yours by modern standards. Dismissing a character who was written a hundred and fifty years ago, and set five hundred years ago, because he considered gypsies heretics is foolish, as such concepts as racial equality, bigotry, egalitarianism didn't exist back then. You can say that X was misogynist or Y was a bigot- but you cannot extrapolate that they are evil or wrong or bad people, as what you consider wrong simply wasn't considered wrong back then. People aren't relating to his bigotry, they relate to the moral dilemma of love vs duty/honour/faith. In other words, you're right, but you're beyond wrong as well.
I'll admit scar is more entertaining to watch. But, we're talking about a character who's bigotry is a great example of how people during those times and some people in the present can relate
The song starts in a major key, then he starts talking about how twisted everyone else is, and that’s when it slips into a minor key. This scene is so amazingly crafted.
The number one Disney song ever. Not just the performance, but the deeper meanings behind the music is incredible. The angel, the fire, it’s all so powerful
I remember a few years ago I found this vid on youtube and the highest rated comment was "Calm down Frollo, it's just a boner" LOL. I will ALWAYS remember that comment.
Tony Jay's performance in Hunchback is one of the greatest voice portrayals in the history of American animation. In fact, it may be the greatest. Frollo's evil is so much more real and palpable than that of any other Disney megalomaniac. He is torn, mentally and emotionally, but remains motivated by hate and the terror of his own sexuality. jkay's portrayal of these conflicts has a subtlety that VA performances often lack.
3:10 The symbolism is so god damn good from this point on. Frollo has sealed his fate as the shadowy spirits judge him and he turns to the wall, showing that he can not escape at this point anymore. Then Frollo turns back to the revealing fire of truth which he can not stand, making him fall to his knees. As the truth is laid bare, he collapses on the ground in the form of an upside down crucifix, in the middle of the same light that was shown with the guard at the door before, the light that represents God. The light of truth that shows us what Frollo is, unredeemable.
But he is irredeemable by choice if this is the case. He has damned himself. The point of no return was his choice, and I seriously doubt it was anything more than his own determination in the sin that sealed his fate after that point. Even then he could choose better, but he simply refuses to, to his own detriment
I dont think we will see perfect art like this ever again, especially from Disney. The music, the lyrics, the animation, the narrative, so good it hurts.
I can see why he faints at the end. Holding a 10 second high note can NOT be easy when you're like 80 years old

I mean even this one was pretty nuts by Disney's standards of the time. But yeah, I see what you're getting at (it's because the 3D animators don't have as good of a deal as the - unionised - 2D animators, so all the teams working on new films are forced to make stuff as milquetoast and palatable as possible)

@@weedes0001I don't think Frolo *would* have prayed. He made it clear, he never truly understood the idea of mercy.

His prayer was even answered, just not in the way he truly wanted so he rejected the messenger calling him an 'idiot'. Considering angels are literally messengers of God... Frollo really just blamed God for his failings, was forgiven for it, and spat in his face.
@@vyntarus9618he basically said "shut up god,i changed my mind on esmeralda"
Just so everyone knows, when the red spirits said “Mea Culpa”, it means “My Fault” which means they wanted Frollo to confess his sins but he instead blames his fault on Esmeralda. Also when the guard opens the door, the light behind the guard was actually the light from Heaven, Frollo was given a last chance to be forgiven by God and to let Esmeralda go but his decision made him preventing his entry to Heaven by turning to the fire.
This. This is one of the many reasons why this movie is an underrated masterpiece!!! Thank you, I never knew that! 😊
Hence the light was white in the background. Great observation and interpretation
I actually never thought about that. Religious or not this is a phenomenal movie, phenomenal scene and one of my all time favorite songs
@@Polomance862 *Frollo.
Just putting that out there
"Disney changed Frollo to a Judge to make it simpler and to avoid religious controversy."
And to change the plot progression as well.
They had to have an absolute antagonist to avoid the tragedy in the original story(you know, Phoebus wasn't the kind guy we see here)
I know, hence the making it simpler part
***** I loved this movie. It never gave me nightmares and the scennes with the fire and shadows freaked me out in the best way. I've seen the movie again recently and I only remebered those scennes.
Incredible, I loved the fire scennes but I cried in Snow White every single time xD I guess we react in diferent ways.
The church choir is so brilliant in this movie. Gives me chills without even knowing what they are saying
I believe they’re chanting “your fault.”
Mixed with his words of pride, the choir continues: "that I have sinned in action and in thought."
Then while Frollo sings "it is not my fault", the choir is saying "it is my fault, my most grievous fault". And then at the end, when Frollo is singing his threats to Esmeralda, the choir is singing "god have mercy, god have mercy".
"Confiteor Deo Omnipotentis (I confess to the almight god)
Beatae Mariae Semper Virgini (to the virgin mary)
Beato Michaelis Archangelo (to michael archangel)
Sanctis Apostolis (to the holy apostles)
Omnibus Sanctis (and all the saints)
Beata Maria you know I am a righteous man
Of my virtue I am justly proud
(et tibi pater - and to you, father/priest)
Beata Maria you know I am much purer than
the common, vulgar, weak, licentious crowd
(quia peccavi nimis - that I have sinned)
So tell me, Maria, why I see her dancing there,
Why her smouldering eyes still scorch my soul?
(cogitatione - in thought)
I fell her, I see her, the Sun caught in her raven hair
is blazing in me out of all control
(verbo et opere - in words, and in actions)
Like fire, hellfire, this fire in my skin
this burning desire is turning me to sin
It is not my fault
(mea culpa - it is my fault)
I'm not to blame
(mea culpa - it is my fault)
It is the gipsy girl, the witch who sent this flame
(mea maxima culpa - my most grievous fault)
It is not my fault
(mea culpa - it is my fault)
If in god's plan
(mea culpa - it is my fault)
he made the devil so much stronger than a man
protect me, Maria, don't let the siren cast her spell
don't let her fire smear my flesh and bone
destroy Esmeralda and let her taste the fires of Hell
or else let her be mine, and mine alone
(guard interrupts)
Hellfire, dark fire
now, gipsy, it's your turn
choose me or your pire
Be mine or you will burn

On a serious note though, Hellfire is utterly brilliant and I really think it's one of the best villain songs ever. On an off-topic note, I saw this last night for the first time in so many years. I love how much attention they paid to the architecture, roads, etc because there is a huge focus on them in the book, more than the story itself. Way to pay homage, Disney.
TheCharleyJay I agree. Frollo is my favorite type of villain; the one who believes they are the good guy. Those who are so obsessed with purity that they fail to see their own corruption.

I miss the real stories with deep themes that reached out to both children and grown ups. I miss the beautiful drawings. I miss these difficult two sided characters. I miss the old disney.
Wreck-It Ralph. Frozen. Both gorgeous, funny, deep and entertaining for all audiences. Don't let nostalgia get in the way of appreciating what's new.
MariktheGunslinger
Froezen REALLY isn't that good.

No, dude, you really don't.
Finally some one who gets what those lines mean.
He's at fault for taking matters into his own hands instead of praying for a change of heart.*
Sin unfortunately makes us rationalise evil using very real truths.

Everyone always says something like, “Frollo is just having the best reaction to a boner!” 😂😂😂
But, it’s so much more than that. Yes, she does arouse him, but it’s not “just a boner.”
The thing about Frollo is that he ardently hates gypsies and he thinks they are full of sin.
Well said.
What I learned:
Frollo had an intense Full Body Ejaculation
I think he definitely cares. He has never thought he has lived a life of sin. And to fall in love with and desire a woman that he thinks is full of just that makes him start to fear himself. He's confused and praying to Maria to help him, but all the sin inside his head tells him no (It's your fault). So he does care. A lot. He desperately wants to be seen as holy by the eyes of Notre Dame and not sinful at all, and he'll do anything to get it. Even if it means burning down all of Paris to do so.
"Choose me or your pyre."
Well ain't that just a heartwarming quote.
Nelson
this poor one quotes from the Guttenberg English translation of the book
: “I’ll find you again!”
“I do not want that devil of a man to find me,” thought Gringoire; and he ran after Dom Claude. “Stay, monsieur the archdeacon, no ill-feeling between old friends!..."
the movie made frollo a minister, i e a government official, and the archdeacon a separate character. your point however is still well taken
in contrast one thinks of the more righteous priest in Les Miserables who gave Valjean the candlesticks

1:19 - verbo et opere (word, and deed)
1:43 - mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa (through my fault, through my fault, through my most grevious fault)
It's amazing and incredible.
Add to that the chanting of "Kyrie Eleison" in the end of the song, which roughly translates to "Lord have mercy"
OK.@@PhilipTrouble
Immediately followed by a declaration of pride and being justified in it.
I miss when media had layers
I go to a Latin mass and I just discovered this now. Disney did a great job in every detail.
I never knew what all the Latin was saying, certainly not that it was all one continous piece
2:35
Guard: Minister Frollo, the gypsy has escaped!
Frollo: (pulls up his pants) Ever heard of KNOCKING, MAN?
*Dress
(pants are the work of the devil)
Lia Hansen *cassock
(dresses are the work of disgusting transvestites)
*cleans seltzer I was drinking off screen*
Brilliant.
YES! Finally found the joke I was looking for. XD
HawkFlameMLP O.O! Ugggh youre disgusting!!!!!!
I find Frollo's gestures at 2:50 to be kind of funny
I think because at this point the guard's interruption has reminded you that this is basically just an old man alone in the dark, gesturing menacingly toward his fireplace.
It would be pretty weird if it had no music to it.
With a piece of random woman's clothing 😏
“I had a little trouble with the fireplace.”
It always the hypocrites
It's scenes like this that make me think that Disney should do an animated Les Miserables movie.
I imagine it would make a few changes from the source material, but it still would be so cool! :D
It would be cool but Disney can't do stuff like that anymore or they'll be the one tasting the fire of hell...
Keru Sakurako You're wrong. The religious stuff in the story would cause nothing more than a million comments on tumblr and youtube pages, the prostitution could be played subtly (maybe no "Lovely Ladies" song), and... other than that I fail to see what the problem would be.
MegaFriendlyCreeper I was thinking of maybe they made up their own music, though I'm sure a lot of people would be disappointed..
Chris Westergaard ...I wasn't talking to you :P
AND LET HER TASTE THE FIRES OF HELL!!
Favorite Disney villian. Gaston comes in close second.
For me it is the other way around.
Dread Baron Eh, Gaston was a nice twist on the normal hero of stories, but there's just something about having a character's motivation be sexual frustration IN A KID'S MOVIE that is just amazing.
What about the Boogey Man?
That swaggalicious right hand from 3:12 to 3:15, just damn. Will need to practice that gesture for future.
lol!
His hand motions at that point look like he was considering a wank.
AIWARAS619 i
Coming here after "Wish" came out to recover and be reminded what an actual masterful villain song sounds like.
Judge Claude Frollo would leave King Magnifico in ashes, beyond all doubt! Disney villains aren't what they used to be.
Yeah, but Frollo's imaginary friends don't pour MOLTEN METAL into the streets of Notre Dame.
The hooded figures are actually chanting "My fault" in Latin, they clearly represents his conscience, which he cannot avoid.
(Its not my fault, if in God's plan, He made the devil so much stronger than a man"
The symbolism is just
@@changniere7696 Damn. I wished there Subtitles in the Latin parts so that People could realize. This is a man trying to Justify his own faults.
I've always understood that he is seeing the saints calling to his sinful nature, and that everything he's doing is unjust and unmeet in nature
Definitely the darkest of the disney renaissance movies
He would need to have some serious mercy on him after this shit, holy balls this is bad.
Fun Fact: The Latin chanting is a Catholic prayer for Penitence and Confession. Playing on the scene as Frollo justifies his deeds even as the chanting grows.
It's "I confess to Almighty God and to you my Brothers and Sisters that I have sinned Through my Fault, Through my Faults..."
If you can see the Subtitles of the Song you'd see just how much the scene hammered his Hypocrasy. How he uses his Faith to Justify his acts as his same faith is literally telling him to Stop this
It's the hypocrisy of humanity. We kill in the name of peace, steal in the name of justice, lie in the name of truth, and hate in the name of love.
1:51 THE LIGHT CREATES A COFFIN AROUND HIM. HOW DID I NOT REALIZE THIS???
wow…
That is an amazing catch! I'm dumbfounded. This film is like Skyrim with the subtle easter eggs.
Frollo: Never mind. Get out, you idiot...
Guard: (leaves)
Other guard: How did he take it?
Guard: Not good. He was singing to the fireplace about her before I went in.
Other guard: Shit, again? We really need to hold an intervention for him.
XD
Guard: yup
Other guard: Man, I know of 7 girls who would kill for a man with a voice like that!
Guard: it's a shame he looks twice his age and has a murder boner for a specific gypsy girl.
@@MazzaAzi MAD!
@@MazzaAzi you continued the conversation, but funnier and realistic. You mad lad
X'D!!!!!!
"How did she escape?"
"Well we have about half of the guards in the ensemble supporting your singing..."
I think "I had a little trouble with the fireplace" was probably the funniest thing Frollo could have said after performing the most dark and powerful song Disney has written thus far
This is what Disney needs to bring back. Meanwhile the villains now are like “I let you live for free and don’t even charge you rent 🤓”
"I clean up all your messes and I'm always there when you need to vent" I *wish* I could scrub that horrible song from memory.
They really hired a guy to write a song that sounds like Lin Manuel Miranda wrote it instead of…hiring Lin Manuel Miranda
@@pablo-arteaga makes me want to vomit. They call that a villain? Lmao
Wait what movie is that line from?
(resumes song)
Next morning: "I had a little trouble with the fireplace." X'D
Lust, Pride, and Wrath.
@Fuglsang oh yeah, there is greed
Definitely envy as well.
It's all 7 deadly sins actually.
Except for Gluttony but damn like what Steven Universe said, why is he a judge?
The 7 deadly sins, and the violation of all of the 10 commandments.
1:49
Not even frollo expects the spanish inquisition
LMFAO
😂
At the beginning when he is praying, he is looking up. After the "guard" tells him the gypsy is gone and Frollo tells the "guard" to get out, he is then looking down and praying to the "Hellfire".
You can watch this 100 times and pickup new things each time. Its amazing. I so miss classic disney.
Broo never noticed that
I miss it too 😂
"It's not my fault! If in God's plan... He made the Devil so much stronger than a man!"
These lines are simply the best. I can't get tired of listening to them. The whole song is a masterpiece, but this... Oh God, have mercy.
To me, this is the most adult scene in any Disney movie. Kudos to every parent who let their kid watch this
well that escalated quickly.
Xavier Glover I
It keeps escalating. Lol
This, the Plagues of Egypt, and Friends on the Other Side are the three best animated villain songs out there.
I swear, Frollo better be in Kingdom Hearts 3, or there will be Hellfire.
wasn't he already in KHDDD?
decusq If he was I didn't know, since I haven't played Dream Drop Distance.
MrPwner911
he was in DDD but it sucked
MrPwner911
...not the game but Frollo's appearance.
CrimsonCeltCherokee The way the game played out had to change the original story too much. It sort of killed the point of Frollo since his character didn't develop like another boss might have.
“I had a bit of trouble with the fireplace.”
“I see.....”
HE KNOWS!
Sure he knows, he loves Esmeralda too.
'Guard! Get out of here! I'm trying to perform showtunes! And while you're at it bring in the guy who made this fireplace. I'm not quite sure it's supposed to be doing this!"
Everyone: "Disney just makes goofy songs for little kids."
Judge Claude Frollo:
When Frollo was interrupted in his "singing moment," and he's like, "Nevermind, get out," I'm sure he was thinking, 'Get out, I'm in the middle of singing to myself, you're embarrassing me. I might have to start over.' Lol
This has got to be one of the most amazing Disney songs ever. The intensity and power is way beyond the cutesy lovey dovey songs from other movies....
The Disney Renaissance era will always be God-tier. Nothing's ever gonna top it.
I love that this whole time he's just screaming into a fireplace
We all gotta love Frollo and his.........unique motivations....
Just realized. at 3:18, Frollo backs up to a wall, but when everything goes back to normal, he's suddenly in the middle of the room
Exactly
Probably because half of things happening in this song are happening in frollos head
Maybe he symbolically sees himself “backed up against a wall” and has to go full genocidal maniac…even tho he doesn’t…as there is no wall??
So much power and darkness behind this song. Frollo is indeed one of the best villains in Disney history.
a lot of people can relate to his bigotry
BloodGallonsOfBlood people understood the concept of what I meant.
Scar is more entertaining to watch, since he has WAY more swag, and a more charismatic set of henchmen than Frollo did.
I'll admit scar is more entertaining to watch. But, we're talking about a character who's bigotry is a great example of how people during those times and some people in the present can relate
When I was a kid I had no idea what the hell this man was singing about but boy did I feel the intensity behind his feelings and words.
The song starts in a major key, then he starts talking about how twisted everyone else is, and that’s when it slips into a minor key. This scene is so amazingly crafted.
3:42 "Everybody do the flop" splat.
Chris Simmons rip frollo death by "da flop"
Chris Simmons OMG THAS
AMAZING!!!!

"I had a little trouble with the fireplace." Yeah, I found some weird white stuff all around it

it was really sticky. I think it was glue...
This sword is going up my ass tonight
DON’T TOUCH IT!!!!!
😨😨😨😨😨😨
....oh.
Trust me, people posting that same crap over and over again makes you wish you didn't.
I thought it was funny
2:45 "Get out idiot, I was singing"
