A number 1 album in five different decades. That’s some record he has.

Paul Weller is a national treasure, in England anyway. His first band The Jam released 6 studio albums between 1977 and 1982. They have 4 No1 singles and their final album The Gift also reached No1. They were a phenomenal band. Check out Down in a Tube Station at Midnight, Strange Town, Going Underground, That’s Entertainment, Eton Rifles as a starter. The band as a 3 piece live act were simply incredible and if you think Damon, who played bass in this video is good, wait til you hear Bruce Foxton. Weller’s 2nd band after splitting the Jam was The Style Council which took him to new musical genres. Check out live versions of My Ever Changing Moods or Walls Come Tumbling Down. The band never got the credit they deserved purely because they just weren’t The Jam and some just never forgave him for splitting them. Weller’s solo work is simply incredible. Check out his live recording of Whirlpools End, Shadow of the Sun, Sunflower, One x One, Rockets, Wild Wood, Mirrorball and Heavy Soul …I could go on and on. He has a small fan base in the US but remains very much an English hero !

Still blows me away that people in the US don’t know Weller (and I’m an American). Glad you got to hear him. He’s still making incredible music - and yes, extremely popular and very well respected in the UK.

Yes I’ve seen Paul Weller during all periods of his musical career. I think his best concert was one he did in Wolverhampton during his solo career.

Damon Minchella is the bass player. The backing singer in the cream trousers is Carlene Anderson (James Brown was her Godfather). Check out her album 'Blessed Burden' on which PW contributed songwriting and backing vocals etc it's a great album. Cheers.

The Jam were remarkable, probably the most Who influenced of all of the 1st wave British punk bands. Perhaps due to the subject matter being very British, they never crossed over. Sound Affects is incredible with That's Entertainment being a particular favorite. Setting Sons and All Mod Cons are where they came into there own beyond the first two very punkish albums. Down in the Tube Station at Midnight is a great example of Weller's songwriting and the specificity to life in England. I know that many of the reactions have been to their Going Underground single which I got in my copy of Sound Affects when it was originally released in the US. You can see if you can locate their performance on the Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder.

He is very popular. He is affectionately known as The Mod Father. First there was The Jam, then he formed Style Council, then he went solo.
The Jam-Town called Malice, That’s Entertainment, Going Underground, Eaton Rifles were all great songs.
Style Council-You’re the best thing, Shout to the top, Walls come tumbling down, A solid bond in your heart.
Solo work: You do something to me, Changingman, From the floorboards up, Wild wood, uh huh oh yeah.

Yes, Yes Yes! Pretty much all the tracks I would recommend. I would add Woodcutters Son, and Hanging On A Wire from Stanley Road. One of my all time top albums!

@@dannyhancock9330 And the 5:00 minute version of "My Ever Changing Moods" by The Style Council. Live Jam in the 70's/early 80's was pure fire and sweat, one of the most ferocious live bands aside from The Who. In the UK, he's a god. In the US, not as much as he should be.

Written and recorded by Dr. John from his first album Gris Gris. Great cover here.

Hi Guys…. Welcome to the world of Paul Weller. Paul is to many in the UK simply a music icon. For my generation he is up there with John Lennon, Pete Townsend, Ray Davies and so many more. He is to many known as ‘The Modfather’ and is seen as an inspirational mod icon from the mod revival of the late 70s and early 80s which was spawned during the punk era ultimately leading into the new wave movement in the UK. The Jam were unstoppable winning just about every prestigious award available in the UK. Paul’s writing was very Britain centric and a commentary to British life and strife under the thatcher regime. This in turn meant their music did lose something in translation which meant their commercial success in the US was nowhere near as successful as other groups of the time. Their material over 6 studio albums (highest US chart position was 22 with their 6th studio release The Gift) and 18 chart singles (4 of the number 1s) in our version of the billboard chart the highest position in the US was 45 with a double A side called A Town Called Malice/ Precious. Their albums show a clear progression but their third album really was the first one where they seemed find their sound as this was All Mod Cons. Weller surprised everyone and broke my teenage heart when in 1982 at the height of their success he chose to leave the band.
He returned with his new band The Style Council- this band was a complete turnaround soundwise Weller moved more towards a soulful/jazz/funk groove. Again his popularity in the UK almost assured him if some success. And there are some truly amazing examples of his work and songwriting genius amongst his many releases with TSC. For me there are some outstanding tracks - You’re the Best Thing, Spin Drifting, My Ever Changing Moods, Have You Ever Had It Blue, Long Hot Summer, Walks Come Tumbling Down. 5 Studio albums and 24 singles he found himself without a record label and wondering WTF happened. His label Polydor dropped him as his last album was probably pushed their envelope a bit far. That said in 1990 he picked himself up dusted down and started to produce some of the most amazing tracks and again started to make people realise their was still life left in him. There are soooo many solo songs I can suggest but for me some of my faves - Porcelain Gods (On the Album Stanley road this is the pre- cursor to Gilded splinters and actually leads one track into the other), Bull Rush, Sunflower, Wild Wood, Had My Fire Really Gone Out, 5th Season, You Do Something to Me, The Changingman, Whirlpools End…. Oh the list is endless!
So now Paul is 16 studio albums in with the odd single thrown in and continues to be critically acclaimed and to push the boundaries of his music. So many of the UKs exports like Oasis, Kasabian, Blur, Stone Roses etc cite Paul as being a massive influence. And I continue to listen to his music every single day and will do so until I no longer breathe!
Hope this help as a errrr….small intro (?) to PW and his music…😂 PS: The Bassis was a guy called Damon Minchella formerly of a band called Ocean Colour Scene whose lead guitarist has been part of a Paul’s band for the 20+ years…. 👍

@@glennandadriansrocktalk YVW Glen. I know there was some overkill there but as you probably guessed I’m a bit of a fan?!!! 🤣 While reading that back a major influence on Paul was a band called The Small Faces - it’s front man being Steve Marriott who Paul mirrored in many ways so they may be worth checking out too. Again another band who commented very much on the British way of life to the detriment of US success. Some great tracks from them - Tin Soldier (my personal all time favourite), Afterglow, What ‘Cha Gonna Di About It, Itchycoo Park. Notable album Ogdens Nut Gone Flake 👍

Weller has been the only artist I have followed since I was 14 right up until today when I am 61. The Jam was a punk influence mod style band. A 3 piece, great angry/ angsty lyrics , clever baselines & melodically sound. Weller went as far as he could with this format but eventually called a halt to the Jam , arguably at the height of their popularity. This upset much of the fan base & when Paul formed a new outfit The Style Council many people turned their back on him. He carried on with angry/ protest style music but on a broader musical canvas…keyboards, brass, backing vocals taking after his beloved Curtis Mayfield among others. Then the final phase as a solo artist with changing band line ups he continues to be prolific & produces more refined & sophisticated music. An icon & foremost singer/ songwriter of his generation….the only person to come even close is Elvis Costello.

Love Paul Weller's solo stuff, way mote than The Jam or Style Council to be honest it's more "musical" for me if you know what I mean. Just my opinion of course but love his songs now.
