This song is so sublime as are the musicians! Steve Winwood is amazing. Back in the day people didn't put music in to tiny genre boxes. Rock was free flowing with all sorts of influences.
Jazz, folk, blues, classical, country etc. Creation was the main focus. This song is about how managers and record companies ripped off rock bands.

Back then, there wasn’t the gazillions of “genres” snd “sub-genres” that we have now. People didn’t search for boxes to put bands in. We didn’t categorize as much….at least in music. It was folk, or hard rock or soft rock or psychedelic, or country or jazz or pop. That’s about it. If congas sounded good, then in they came. Hell, after The Beatles introduced us to sitars, anything was fair game. 😁

This song is mesmerizing. It was not played on Top 40 Rock stations. It was relegated to album format and adult progressive stations, and for the most part was listened to only by "heads" if you know what I mean. Steve Winwood is a rock monster, beginning with Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith and a solo career.

Check out Feeling Alright, Pearly Queen, 40,000 Headmen (a favorite of mine), Glad/Freedom Rider, Empty Pages, Shootout at the Fantasy Factory, Evening Blue. Or his work with Spencer Davis Group (I'm a Man, Gimme Some Loving) or his work with Blind Faith with Eric Clalpton, or his incredible solo work (Higher Love with Chaka Khan, Arc of a Diver, Valerie, Roll With It). This is an awesome song. I was curious about the term "low spark of high heeled boys" so I did some searching on it. I found this interpretation of the lyrics and it makes so much sense: "One hell of a jam. I like the long version. The song is about drug culture and the relationships between users and suppliers. Low spark is injection, and high heeled boy is speedball, a mixture of cocaine and heroin.
The first verse is about shooting up.
The second verse is about a dealer that got overdosed.
The third verse waxes philosophical and asks what you would do in a life and death situation, and if you haven't been in a life and death situation, assures you that one day you will be, if not already. That what bothers you is that you know you are already in a life and death situation.
The fourth verse is a repeat of the second verse, or another dealer bit the dust.
The fifth verse is saying that whether you are an altruist or a rapist, a persons mind can survive your philosophy, and he is high again.
That is my opinion. One hell of a jam, too.
So it basically boils down to, he's a junkie, has to watch out for goodie two shoes, has to watch out for rapists, we are all in a life and death situation, and he is high."

You should check out the entire career of Steve Winwood. Teenage popstar with the Spencer Davis Group (you know the songs) Then Traffic, Blind Faith with Eric Clapton, and his solo work (you know the songs) He has gone through life's thread with so many people not realising it's the same guy. There Must Be Higher Love!

Weather Report and Return to Forever we're the two premier fusion groups. Herbie Hancock as well. Early to mid 70s. Of course early Chicago and Blood Sweat Tears added jazz horns to rock.

Huh. I always thought of Hancock and RTF as jazz…period. Are they normally referred to as fusion, or is this your personal opinion?

@@helenespaulding7562 think Bitches Brew by Miles Davis was considered the start of jazz fusion, more electronics and more rock elements etc. Certainly Headhunters by Hancock and RTF and Weather Report songs like Birdland we're considered fusion. Traditional jazz was less electric with people like Horace Silver or The Messengers etc. There was also free jazz with later Coltrane and Corea etc. Just my view from growing up in an interesting time. Even big bands like Thad Jones Mel Lewis or Quicy Jones were experimenting. All good no matter the label. Progressive Rock also great with ELP, YES, Tull, Winwood, etc

@@RoryVanucchi we sound like contemporaries. I was in my 20’s when I bought RTF and Hancock albums. I get your point. I had allot of those types of albums…Herbie Mann, Stan Getz, Ramsey Lewis. Good stuff.
Have you watched any vids of Hancock with bassist Tal Wilkinfeld? Amazing.

@@helenespaulding7562 I like it all, wanted to be a jazz drummer but we had it all in the 60s 70s, and variety and talents from pop to soul to jazz to country singer-songwriter to standards to theatre, we were spoiled. Then digital and mtv rolled around. Artistry throw out for image.

Hi Again, Salvo! If you get a chance, take a listen (or react) to Steve Winwood, many decades later doing a Traffic song "John Barley Corn Must Die." The Traffic version was wonderful, but Steve's voice and just his guitar in his acoustic studio is a masterpiece.

Do you know "Higher Love" by Steve Winwood? He started playing on stage at age 14. A musical prodigy.
...and the drummer looks like he's a chemistry major after hours.

It'shigh time you learn who Steve Winwood is. His father and older brother were both musicians and he joined them onstage from an early age. By age sixteen, he was touring internationally with theSpencer Davis Group. He went onto Traffic, followed by Blind Faith (which included Eric Clapton), then onto a rock/pop phase. He doesn't wreck Ferraris, overdose, or have barroom brals. He works making music. As a guitarist, he can keep up with Eric Clapton, who aodores him, no problem. Here he is covering Ray Charles' Georgia on My MInd at age sixteen, SIXTEEN, withthe Spencer Davis Group. Ericua-cam.com/video/8w9WNeSkN0I/v-deo.html

There are so many great songs to react to from Steve Winwood, please react to “can’t find my way home”, it is really beautiful and highlights his uniqueness when it comes to vocals.
