I was fascinated by that deputy. He attended the trial in street clothes, but at the sentencing he was wearing his deputy uniform. If the hash marks on his sleeve equal 3 years of service each (as in the military), he had ten of them, or 30 years of service. He got the job (perhaps honor) of being the closest deputy to AM. I don't know anything about being a deputy, but it seems to me that he is laser focused on the back of AM's head, if it moves, he pounces.

I believe that he was expecting that he was so experienced and intelligent and had laid the groundwork to frame up a whole classification of suspects (those angry about the boat crash) that he thought he would get away with it and 1) inherit everything coming to his family from his dad's death; 2) receive insurance money (it worked with the poor nanny); 3) be seen as sympathetic and reap rewards from that; 4) get his wife and son off of his back about "always working" and doing drugs and blowing their money (or prevent them from ever knowing about the embezzlement and other stuff); and lastly, 5) maybe could KEEP doing drugs in private? @@amandacarullo8638 His wife had property both in her name and jointly, he was a correspondent in his son's boat accident case for obstruction in trying to hinder that case, he was on drugs and his wife had the younger boy Paul telling her Dad was back on the pills, his Dad who had bailed him out of financial trouble in the past was dying and in his muddled mind the deaths of his wife and boy would make all his legal and financial problems go away plus he was known to be paranoid and addicts blame others for their problems. And he was a fixer and came from a privileged family for 100 years and he counted on that too. I have family right across the Savannah River from this area and like the Murdaughs they are an old Southern family with a past involvment in local politics and it brings power and respect and deference. It's a pecking order in these small counties. Think English villages where there are " squires" and peasants. Lol!

He lost his son only months ago, amazing he came back to work for such a crucial case. What an absolute gentleman. Dr Kinsey is also another hero for this trial.

I noticed that. Those deputies were likely at the crime scene too because it's such a small county. My paternal Grandfather was a Deputy Sheriff and Court Baitliff in Missouri.

I’ve watched this sentencing 5 times in awe. It’s fascinating how a judge can punish someone in a most severe way, yet in a respectful and fatherly way. That you almost feel sorry for Alex. I just can’t get over how awesome this judge is. Dignified sentencing for a horrible, horrible crime.
this judge was just amazing. How hard it must have been for him to deliver the things he said after working in court with Alex for so many years. I like the fact that he talked about "the other person that can live in an addictive person". in some ways that gave me knowledge in understanding the un-understandable
@@mojo6098 I live in the area and followed the trial closely. He gave both sides plenty of opportunity to state their cases, he expressed himself calmly. He operates with an old school fairness that is lost in today's world. I was able to attend the trial live for a full day as well. He led with knowledge over intimidation. It was humbling to watch.
This Judge will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the kindest, most thoughtful, patient, of all time. Not many can fit into that type of character, but this man certainly does. His family has a gem for a father, husband, son, whatever capacity it may be, they are fortunate.

I had to rewatch that part a few times. It was a natural, human response. This family was very well-known in this community and I’m sure this sheriff’s deputy knew Maggie and Paul, in some capacity, which would explain his nodding response. So sad.
I am a former Court Reporter, Clerk in courts in Canada and this is one of the best judgments I have heard. Judge Newman is wise and devoted to his profession. Alex Murdaugh displays the signs of being psychopathic. This is something that can, to put it simply, run in families. His son, Buster, could have learnt a lot from Judge Newman's words but he appeared with an expression similar to his father and perhaps he wasn't listening. I have read that Judge Newman lost his son in January of this year and my sincere condolences to him and for his selfless act in overseeing this very significant trial. This is southern justice at its best.
I heard he had lost a son but didn’t realize it was so recently. I can imagine that while listening to this case the judge may have thought “I’d give anything to have my son back and this man killed his son in cold blood” it’s chilling to even think about

Thank you for clarifying who that man was. I have wondered for the entire trial up until yesterday who that man was because he was always in a jacket and tie, sitting directly behind AM like a rock showing no emotion. It wasn’t until yesterday when he wore a sheriff’s (or whatever that is) uniform that I understood he was from law enforcement of some kind. It’s peculiar to me he turned out to be the bailiff because at one point about 3-4 weeks ago my computer screen would not show the bailiff’s face except with a gray face. No eyes, nose, mouth, anything. It was the strangest thing I’d ever seen. Imagine the portrayals of the grim ripper, just a blank gray blob on top of his shoulders. I was so taken aback by it that I even showed it to my husband. Everyone around him had clear features, but he had none. Just a blank, gray head. It was disturbing to say the least. It’s interesting he is now full of emotive responses to the judge about AM’s actions. Perhaps he is a form of the grim reaper taking AM to the next place. All I know is that it was disturbing to me what my screen showed that day and I guess I am still a little bit perplexed by it.
I love the judge. So prestigious and such a powerful well spoken man. To be able to compose yourself in the presence of such evil says a lot about fortitude.
This Judge is amazing. He is what a Judge should be. I can’t even count the number of times that I was nodding my head in agreement with what he was saying or saying “Yes!” Out loud… I think that the reason we were all so captivated by this case was not only due to the horrific nature of the case, but also just realizing how many people this man affected by his own selfishness. It’s astonishing that he ever slept at night … I wouldn’t even be worried about the prison sentence if I were him~ I would be worried about what comes on the day he truly has to answer for what he has done…
Judge Newman is by far the most poised and eloquently spoken judge I've seen. He spoken from the heart and soul. Almost gave me some kind of hope in humanity. Good Job, job well done!

Unfortunately they do it all the time. Statistically, we’re more likely to be killed or attacked by our friends and family… which is why they’re always the first suspects. Idk why people do what they do, and it’s really a lost cause trying to figure it out. Evil is tricky like that, you can’t quite understand it only know that people are capable of it even the people closest to you.

As I reflect on my life, I’ve always wanted to be a blessing to those I’ve met along the way and especially now, as I have 5 very young precious grandchildren. I pray they remember me as a loving person. Alex has caused huge ripples of pain like a powerful ocean. Maggie’s family, Ms. Satterfield’s sons, the lawyers who trusted him, he destroyed the law firm that had been together for many years. Attorney Ronnie Crosby gave a great testimony. And all his clients who were extremely injured in accidents that they will never recover from, he stole millions from them. One young man who was his client was a quadriplegic, that poor young man could not even breath on his own and would require complete care 24 hours a day. And Alex stole millions from him. A few days later after Alex received those millions, the young man’s breathing machine was mysteriously turned off and he died. I will always wonder if Alex did it or paid someone to do it?! Alex is evil and I’m so glad he was found guilty!!
15:35..."when the judge said to Alex that "within your own soul, you'll have too deal with that", ( meaning deal with the truth that he murdered his own wife and son), John Marvin shook his head up and down in a "yes" gesture agreeing with the judge. What was "REALLY" surprising was that when John Marvin was on the stand, he said his brother Alex was "NOT" the murderer. So right there John Marvin more or less admitted to the world that he himself was a "Liar", and he "KNEW" his brother was the murderer!!! Not to mention "all" the other shady dealings he's involved in, in these murders and beyond!!! All I can say is, Stay Tuned!

As a father of two teenage sons, it’s very hard to imagine killing your own child especially a son who is also your buddy. Strange things happen in life.
That is the condition of not having a conscience. People, including 'loved ones', are expendable, when they get in the way or have out-lived their usefulness.
Now, what you wrote is legitimate, but it is an emotional argument and it should not be used to judge whether he is guilty or not guilty. The fact that there is no physical evidence of the murder, however, makes it clear that he would not have been convicted of a murder in a state of law. We don't know if he did it, but precisely because it would be unlikely for his own child. Of course, we never know what he is capable of, but in the absence of real evidence, we cannot know what happened to his family.

Judge Newman is a remarkable judge. I was impressed by the specific wording of the sentencing of Mr Murdaugh for the murder of his son. Judge Newman added ‘whom you probably loved so much’ to this particular sentence. It impresses that this murder was not only cruel but heartless.
That got me. He killed his boy. That's just depraved. I never believed he was guilty at first until the phone video where he was at the kennels. And by using two guns meant it had to be planned. I bet his boy's and wife's spirits do haunt him every night.
Watching the officer standing behind Alex the entire time i think depicts most our feelings and emotions over this horrific event. It is obvious he nor anyone else involved will ever be the same.

I'm so thankful that justice was served. There were moments during the trial when I wasn't so sure it would be due to the Murdaugh family name and history in that area of South Carolina. Much respect for Judge Newman for his fairness and kindness. He is a true gentleman.
The whole thing is so very, very sad. My heart goes out to his victims. There are so many of them. It is so tragic that two of his victims are no longer living. If I could read his mind as he sat there, I would not want to.

I watched the whole thing . I dont see how they have proven him guilty of the murders without a murder weapon .

Don't forget Stephen Smith's death too. Seemed fishy that his attorney brother offered to handle the Smith case for free, yet he only asked about Stephen's electronic devices. Until now, this family has always been able to dodge accountability and face any consequences.

I believe that he was expecting that he was so experienced and intelligent and had laid the groundwork to frame up a whole classification of suspects (those angry about the boat crash) that he thought he would get away with it and 1) inherit everything coming to his family from his dad's death; 2) receive insurance money (it worked with the poor nanny); 3) be seen as sympathetic and reap rewards from that; 4) get his wife and son off of his back about "always working" and doing drugs and blowing their money (or prevent them from ever knowing about the embezzlement and other stuff); and lastly, 5) maybe could KEEP doing drugs in private? Maybe.

And he was a fixer and came from a privileged family for 100 years and he counted on that too. I have family right across the Savannah River from this area and like the Murdaughs they are an old Southern family with a past involvment in local politics and it brings power and respect and deference. It's a pecking order in these small counties. Think English villages where there are " squires" and peasants. Lol!

this judge was just amazing. How hard it must have been for him to deliver the things he said after working in court with Alex for so many years. @@mojo6098 I live in the area and followed the trial closely. He gave both sides plenty of opportunity to state their cases, he expressed himself calmly. He operates with an old school fairness that is lost in today's world. I was able to attend the trial live for a full day as well. He led with knowledge over intimidation. It was humbling to watch.
This Judge will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the kindest, most thoughtful, patient, of all time.
Not many can fit into that type of character, but this man certainly does. His family has a gem for a father, husband, son, whatever capacity it may be, they are fortunate.

I am a former Court Reporter, Clerk in courts in Canada and this is one of the best judgments I have heard. Judge Newman is wise and devoted to his profession. Alex Murdaugh displays the signs of being psychopathic. This is something that can, to put it simply, run in families. His son, Buster, could have learnt a lot from Judge Newman's words but he appeared with an expression similar to his father and perhaps he wasn't listening. I have read that Judge Newman lost his son in January of this year and my sincere condolences to him and for his selfless act in overseeing this very significant trial. This is southern justice at its best.

Thank you for clarifying who that man was. I have wondered for the entire trial up until yesterday who that man was because he was always in a jacket and tie, sitting directly behind AM like a rock showing no emotion. It wasn’t until yesterday when he wore a sheriff’s (or whatever that is) uniform that I understood he was from law enforcement of some kind.
It’s peculiar to me he turned out to be the bailiff because at one point about 3-4 weeks ago my computer screen would not show the bailiff’s face except with a gray face. No eyes, nose, mouth, anything. It was the strangest thing I’d ever seen. Imagine the portrayals of the grim ripper, just a blank gray blob on top of his shoulders. I was so taken aback by it that I even showed it to my husband. Everyone around him had clear features, but he had none. Just a blank, gray head. It was disturbing to say the least. It’s interesting he is now full of emotive responses to the judge about AM’s actions. Perhaps he is a form of the grim reaper taking AM to the next place. All I know is that it was disturbing to me what my screen showed that day and I guess I am still a little bit perplexed by it.

This Judge is amazing. He is what a Judge should be. I can’t even count the number of times that I was nodding my head in agreement with what he was saying or saying “Yes!” Out loud… I think that the reason we were all so captivated by this case was not only due to the horrific nature of the case, but also just realizing how many people this man affected by his own selfishness. It’s astonishing that he ever slept at night … I wouldn’t even be worried about the prison sentence if I were him~ I would be worried about what comes on the day he truly has to answer for what he has done…

And Maggie’s father has had a stroke recently. Alex caused so much destruction. As I reflect on my life, I’ve always wanted to be a blessing to those I’ve met along the way and especially now, as I have 5 very young precious grandchildren. I pray they remember me as a loving person. Alex has caused huge ripples of pain like a powerful ocean. Maggie’s family, Ms. Satterfield’s sons, the lawyers who trusted him, he destroyed the law firm that had been together for many years. Attorney Ronnie Crosby gave a great testimony. And all his clients who were extremely injured in accidents that they will never recover from, he stole millions from them. One young man who was his client was a quadriplegic, that poor young man could not even breath on his own and would require complete care 24 hours a day. And Alex stole millions from him. A few days later after Alex received those millions, the young man’s breathing machine was mysteriously turned off and he died. I will always wonder if Alex did it or paid someone to do it?! Alex is evil and I’m so glad he was found guilty!!
15:35..."when the judge said to Alex that "within your own soul, you'll have too deal with that", ( meaning deal with the truth that he murdered his own wife and son), John Marvin shook his head up and down in a "yes" gesture agreeing with the judge. What was "REALLY" surprising was that when John Marvin was on the stand, he said his brother Alex was "NOT" the murderer. So right there John Marvin more or less admitted to the world that he himself was a "Liar", and he "KNEW" his brother was the murderer!!! Not to mention "all" the other shady dealings he's involved in, in these murders and beyond!!!

As a father of two teenage sons, it’s very hard to imagine killing your own child especially a son who is also your buddy. Strange things happen in life.

That is the condition of not having a conscience. People, including 'loved ones', are expendable, when they get in the way or have out-lived their usefulness.
Now, what you wrote is legitimate, but it is an emotional argument and it should not be used to judge whether he is guilty or not guilty. The fact that there is no physical evidence of the murder, however, makes it clear that he would not have been convicted of a murder in a state of law. We don't know if he did it, but precisely because it would be unlikely for his own child. Of course, we never know what he is capable of, but in the absence of real evidence, we cannot know what happened to his family.

Judge Newman is a remarkable judge. I was impressed by the specific wording of the sentencing of Mr Murdaugh for the murder of his son. Judge Newman added ‘whom you probably loved so much’ to this particular sentence. It impresses that this murder was not only cruel but heartless.

That Sherrif’s Deputy with the beard who’s been sat behind AM for the trial in civilian clothes but yesterday and today wore uniform…..when he nodded and looked at AM when Mr Waters was describing the staring….ooooof, that was awesome.
Just noticed he has a metal star on his chest as opposed to an embroidered one…I’m guessing that means he’s a Sherrif? I’m not from the USA and here in Scotland we have one agency….Police Scotland and the whole different types of US law enforcement is still not properly clear to me. So, apologies for calling him a Deputy if he is indeed a Sherrif. He certainly looks like a Sherrif!

Murdaugh's sister Lynn should be ashamed of herself. The evidence is clear, yet she shakes her head at the Judge. I question Lynn's integrity as well. Dead sister-n-law, and nephew. Deny, deny. Sickening.

The judge is an amazingly qualified and kind man...wisdom and judgment with a gentle voice...but powerful beyond words.its alwayssad to see a human destroy so many as this once prominent man did..blessings to all who endured the Rath of this man...
I'm so thankful that justice was served. There were moments during the trial when I wasn't so sure it would be due to the Murdaugh family name and history in that area of South Carolina. Much respect for Judge Newman for his fairness and kindness. He is a true gentleman.

The whole thing is so very, very sad. My heart goes out to his victims. There are so many of them. It is so tragic that two of his victims are no longer living. If I could read his mind as he sat there, I would not want to.
