Haha, well it's super cool of you to watch my video and drop a comment regardless! And thank you for all you've done for video games, the Jak series has had a massive impact on my life and I'm very grateful
Thank you Andy for such an amazing game series, your comment and interaction means a lot to us and the games have been fun from when I was 3 and still are fun in my 20's! whether that's breaking records or finding levels that couldn't make it in the games.
@@dookieohwhy I don't actually have any control over that anymore. Naughty Dog (and Sony, which owns NDI) still have all the rights to J&D so they could totally make a new game should they have the bandwidth. That's actually rare as a lot of the time there are legal encumbrances.
I'm actually a little surprised you guys didn't mention anything about Twisted Sister front man, Dee Snider, voicing Gol in the first game. I actually have a fun little bit of trivia regarding this too. I've been best friends with his second oldest son since we went to elementary school together in the mid to late 90's. He was actually the reason I knew about Jak and Daxter way earlier since he and his dad had gotten to go to Naughty Dog's studio to record the voice lines months in advance of the first reveal. He told me about the entire experience, but what really stuck out to me was how they asked Dee to specifically record Twisted Sister-related dialogue. One of these lines actually did make it into the game, which has Gol saying, "We're not gonna take it" before Jak grabs the Light Eco. But there were some others that were more for the sake of joking around. They were things along the lines of "We're not gonna take it/I wanna rock? What kind of idiot would write that?!" in Gol's voice. I'll have to ask him if he remembers anything else from that day, or possibly others unused lines. Still, I found it pretty funny.
Ah you're right, totally should have included that. And that's such a cool story! I did hear Gol saying the line in the final boss, and the other one you mentioned was part of an old bloopers video that you can find on youtube
@@PowercellZeke That's awesome! I had no idea audio of that was actually released. I always wanted to hear it for so many years, so I'm gonna have to track it down!
For the yellow sages lab, I always assumed that he blew it up as he fought Gol and Maya. When you get to the Red Sage's lab, you learned that he put up more of a fight then the blue sage. Red Eco is known in the game to increase your strength, while yellow eco to volatile causing explosion. I always thought that when Gol and Maya fought the yellow sage and he fought back, he kinda... blew up his house in the ensuing fight.
The Yellow Sage is also sort of a stereotypical loony hillbilly - he even holds a gun staff. Given your theory, it's not hard to imagine that he would be a maniac and trigger happy combatant when Gol and Maia came knocking. Now considering his thick accent and the prevalence of yellow eco I wouldn't be surprised if the writers intended for him to have come from Boggy Swamp. The "modest" conditions Boggy Billy lived in could also be used to explain why the Yellow Sage has such a small hut (aside from the real reason probably being time constraints and cut content).
I just don't see how it would be hard to think that Gol and Maya DID take over and in the process destroy his lab, that happened to be in a volcano while also happen to be near a Precursor temple. Gol and Maya would have more of a reason to kidnap him that way since he's right there and possibly interfering with their work. Honestly he'd probably be the first one they kidnapped working their way to the other Sages and since Red and Yellow are practically neighbors they very well could have gone after him next. Like Yellow finds this ancient temple, sets up his new lab and such (it probably was in the Swamp for a while but for whatever reason he moves), Gol and Maya show up oh hey there's a temple we can work with dark eco and eventually try to open this giant ass door oh hey one of the Sages are literally right here to "help" in getting this door unlocked, destroy his lab in a fight kidnap him move onto Red and continue til Jak shows up with Green and that whole fight goes down.
I always kinda assumed since yellow eco creates fire balls he was immune to fire and just hung out in front of the citadel to try and prevent lurkers from remaking havoc and as such he’s the first one that got caught
58:05 Another cool tidbit from this tale is that Gil Archeron, the recluse from Japan, shares an almost identical name to Gol Acheron, the dark eco sage and main antagonist of The Precursor Legacy. Great video btw, amazing little trip down memory lane with a whole heap of stuff I never knew!
for someone who first encountered terry over 10 years ago when i was 5 and thinking it was all just a dream i saw it really warms my heart to finally after so long to actually get confirmation that it indeed exists. the sight of terry was just burned into my memory and every time i went to play the mission i was really questioning if he would appear again... he never would which let me to believe that i had just imagined it
One thing I've never seen mentioned anywhere which always interested me was in a mission in Jak 2 or 3 (not sure which) there is a Crimson Guard mining operation that you have to wreck by grinding around a large drill in the center of the room and break support cables. The Crimson Guards are throwing grenades but if you get a good look at them, the grenades are actually miniature models of the dark eco canister/relic that Jak and Daxter find in the intro cutscene on Misty Island in the first game. The canister/relic is the one that lights up and Jak throws at the lurker that attacks them.
I'm so glad I reuploaded those pre-production clips of TLF all those years ago. They were originally found on a ND dev's portfolio website by users of the official PlayStation forums back in 2008. I remember when they were found I immediately downloaded them and uploaded them to UA-cam in case they got removed from that website. They did get removed and that developer (can't remember who it was unfortunately) actually messaged me on UA-cam asking me to remove them since news articles at the time were linking to my videos (UA-cam didn't really have copyright protections back then to allow companies to strike videos and get them removed). I removed them since the dev asked me to but about half a year later I reuploaded them since they were still uploaded to other websites at the time and I figured it didn't really matter if they were on UA-cam as well. If I hadn't reuploaded them they'd probably be long gone from the internet by now, especially since the computer I was on at the time is also long gone. It sucks so much it's the only stuff we can see of ND's original vision for the game.
For the Water Slums mission, the best cheat is to turn into Dark Jak and dark bomb the water, which will take out the security turret and allow you to hoverboard under the bridges, avoiding actually having to engage with the Krimson Guards.
Woah. I JUST got the platinum on Jak 1 & 2, and it was also my first time playing through them to completion. I had no idea these games had such a developed modern audience like this. It's so wonderful stumbling into niche communities. Hopefully, all you guys' wishes come true, whether it be that longed for sequel or a remake in the vein of Crash/Spyro.
Can we take a moment to talk about the Baron's cut dialogue? As someone who LOVES the metalheads and their storyline, hearing the Baron address the attack the way he did gave me genuine chills...
I remember finding the creators' easter egg photo on Jak 2 by accident while I was messing up the game with glitches and exploring weird bugged places when I was a kid. It was really scary at first, cause it was completely unexpected and got me off guard, but I understood what it was after a couple of seconds and laughed.
This game series had such a disappointing ending. This franchise was amazing, underrated, and definitely deserved more. There were so many pieces of cut content
Jak and Daxter contains so much of my childhood. The story contained within these games is so rich and involving, and I genuinely do not think there was a single bad Jak and Daxter game from Naughty Dog. Even Jak X was a blast to play, sparing the save file glitch.
"In the time before time, when the light bursts from the earth the answers to the questions will begin. But only begin, for still the world will not be ready to learn the truth of its past" Made me think of the planetary defense system in Jak 3 as the light eco laser fits this description perfectly, not to mention its also when the answers about what the precursors are and the scale of the universe begin. This, some of the Ideas in the Design Bible's, and some of the other stuff like the world being unfinished in TLF makes me want Jak to come back but in a new form. I know everyone wants to see Jak 4 and 'Remakes' are a touchy subject, but I'd rather see a new beginning where they have time to completely finish Jak 1's world. Hubs, no load screens, move set, enemies (including metal heads), locations, eco powers, precursor weapons, ideas, music, lore, etc. with modern limitations make my mind race. Jak is a unique game with its core move set being unlike any other game I've experienced not to mention all the little quirks that make it even better. Seeing the first game at it's truest potential would make me ecstatic.
I remember strongly sharing this sentiment a few years back. Your post especially strikes a chord with me, as TPL has my overall favorite aesthetic design in the series. Adding to that, the precursors are also my favorite iteration on the "ancient, long lost, technically advanced civilization" trope, and it sadly feels like much of the meat to their existence and culture went unexplored. While I do admittedly like the ottsel twist, I always felt like there still could've been so much more.
One thing that wasn’t mentioned was the bikes in Jak X, if you look into one of the concept art pieces for Jak X’s design bible you see Jak on a bike. At some point the studio must of wanted bikes in the game but were cut probably due to lack of time or something a long those lines
I guess it wouldn't make sense for a bike to be present in a game all about death races (unless you want to die lol). There's only so much you can weaponize a bike in the way that Jak X: CR handled it with random drops and missiles appearing kind of like they would in Mario Kart (though obviously they made some visuals to the vehicles that could lead you to believe the vehicles had been built in mind for the use of all offensive and defensive pick ups). So to have a bike with a machine gun wouldn't be too weird...but a bike shooting grenades or missiles would be kind of weird imo lol. Or maybe it's the same reason why Halo nixed the idea of a bike and just went with a quad, who knows?
I genuinely never knew Jak could trip like that in the first game. Like granted I didn’t know a lot of this stuff, but that feels like something I would have seen just playing through the game. Really cool to see here.
This one isn't really a mistery but a glitch, in Jak ll, if you hit a Crimson Guard, go into the shooting course (without starting it) and then go outside again the Crimson theme will play even though they aren't searching for you anymore. This doesn't look like a lot but for some reason it seems to force every zone in the game to play the second variation of their themes, so you can for example go into Mar's Tomb and hear the second variation that otherwise goes unused.
Haven't watch the full video yet but I was just going to say that I initially had allot more speaking roles in the video, specifically: Seem’s death, Naughty Dog references, Jak and Daxter cut levels, hole in LPC, Precursor Orb typo, and crouch spin. All of which I'd rewritten or wrote (but I'm not sure how much they were edited since I didn't voice them). Reasons being: talking into a mic F'ing sucks. This is just context for people wondering why I'm not in the video that much.
I love how the incredibly difficult mission isn’t actually that difficult once you know what to do. You literally just run for the exit and don’t fight any guards, I beat it first time on every replay now. I will admit tho, on a first play through it was the most difficult mission
I always referred to the “white eco” in the first game as artificial light eco formed by fusing the other eco types together. Due to it being artificial, it is unstable and thus why it’s power is limited to a single blast attack. It’s different effects could also be as a result of jak still having the “pure light” inside of him, as by that point he was not touched by dark eco.
@@dvda9725 I know it is light eco, I heard light eco, and I call it light eco. I literally put it in quotations in my initial comment because that isn’t what I call it. I was specifying what I was referring to. The point of my comment is that it is still light eco, it’s just an artificial form since it looks and acts differently than light eco in the third game. Stop getting defensive, and start reading comments properly.
That's an interesting interpretation! I always figured the other ecos mixing to become the hidden light type was an indication that light eco is the summation of all eco's potential. This should subsequently make dark eco the opposite; the subtraction of all eco's potential...but it interestingly acts more like a mirror than an entirely new image, so to speak. Dark eco grants sheer strength not unlike the effects of red eco. Dark Jak's manic behavior, and especially the arcs of apparent plasma while in the form seem to indicate a connection to the effects of blue eco (Dark Jak actually does have higher movement speed, best seen when crawling). The Dark Strike ability is reminiscent of the yellow eco blast, but likely has more destructive potential. And finally, the scrapped idea that Dark Jak would cost significant health appears to mirror the effects of green eco, which heals. In any case, I've noted these similarities for years, and it's been my most engaging headcanon. This theory also begs even more questions, funnily enough.
@@megamillion5852 Thats a good point actually, dark eco in the second and third games also appears strikingly similar (apart from colour obviously) to the light eco from the first game. That being, a globular almost liquid substance. This would have mirrored light eco even better in the third game, had they kept it's original design. Instead it was changed to a more spherical ball of light. Perhaps light eco exists in two forms as I stated in my original comment. A pure form, utilised by the precursors and seen in the third game, and an artificial form which is formed when fusing the other eco types. However, fusing the eco types together could also potentially result in dark eco forming. Essentially the same substance, simply corrupted. This would explain the similarities of dark eco to the original light eco seen in the first game, including it's ability to seemingly harness each eco's powers as well as it's almost identical appearance.
@@megamillion5852 dark blast being lightning as blue eco, dark bomb being a wave as red eco, dark strike as yellow, and the ability in 2 of dark Jak being invincible as green. Light regeneration green, flash freeze blue (slowing time is actually you moving faster relatively). More of a stretch now but, sheild as red eco because it is a wave of energy protecting you instead of damaging others. And flight as yellow because it propels you and yellow eco in TPL is used to get the most hight. Just a thought.
56:00 Billy Howerdel also had QOTSA (Queens Of The Stone Age) members; Troy Van Leeuwen and Joseph Castillo contributing to the Jak X soundtrack aswell. You can kinda hear the QOTSA sound in some of the game's songs. :)
While there were some things which were too vague or missed some important information, in overall this was a nice summary of interesting things, targeted towards the many Jak fans who never heard of most of these things 👍🏼
What I found most interesting and moving was about honoring the naughty dog Morgan and then the music behind Jax X that was from bands I grew up hearing and my old man even liked. This is really a great summary about Jak and Dax facts. You guys definitely did your home work!
I'm a big Jak and Daxter fan, but holy crap, I didn't know a lot of this stuff. This was so interesting and I can't imagine all the hard work that went into finding everything, plus sources too. Great job!
I somehow knew a surprising amount of this iceberg, most of the stuff I didnt know was all the pre production and just how many big name people were involved with the Jak X soundtrack.
good job on this guys!! it was really interesting watching that old discussion stream so i was looking forward to this :D was great to see keith and boomer on the video as well!
You forgot to mention the famous video on UA-cam called 'Jak 3 "Learning to Fly"' by Darkbugg showing an early stage of the game were gravity physics were a bit different and were you could litteraly fly in the sky with the desert vehicles. Otherwise super impressive video which taught me so much more about this nostalgia masterpiece that many of us discovered during our childhood.
I know I already left a comment here, but I wanted to add in a little something to the iceberg that I personally found interesting. Keep in mind, this is mostly just speculation, though: It's my belief that there was going to be a somewhat major mechanic in Jak 3 involving the ability to ride MetalHeads. If you look through the concept art in the Scrapbook & Mega Scrapbook, one of the concept arts depict an early version of the Leaper Lizard, revealing that it was originally meant to be a "tamed" Metal Head captured by the Spargus Citizens. Also, for some environment shots of the Metal Head Nest/Tower, there are shots of Metal Heads riding on other horse-like Metal Heads, as well as several depictions of regular Metal Head Grunts riding atop larger insectoid Metal Heads. Finally, one of the concept artworks for the Metal Saur (the dinosaur like Metal Head in the desert), depict it carrying several smaller Metal Heads on it's back, in a small structure that replaced it's canon. My guess is that they were initially meant to roam the wasteland as an optional obstacle/enemy for you to encounter. Should you get close to these monsters, perhaps the smaller Metal Heads would jump out from the structure on it's back. I doubt it would have been worthy of being added onto this iceberg had it been brought up before the video was made, however, the amount of Metal Heads riding atop each other in the concept artwork had me convinced that there was a theme to it - or something like it planned. Figured it's be cool to point out.
Thats really funny, I tripped by the farmers house before and I never seen jak trip before, so I spent some time trying to get him to trip again but it wouldn't happen. Now I know why lol.
That was such an amazing video to watch. Thank you so much for the effort of everyone in it to put this together. Jak is by far one of my favorite games since I was a child and this video was able to give me a lot more interesting information about it that I never knew before. Thank you so much again!
Man, loading thing is so genius! Tripping over is non existent in gameplay in any other game for obvious reason, but this not only solves one problem with hiding loading times, but makes games more alive! R.I.P. Morgan
Amazing video Zeke. Thanks for covering the secrets behind one of my fav games growing up. Kudos to you and the other creators that participated in the making of this video!
In the spanish dub of Jak II, Kiera says that they travelled 500 hundred years into the future, maybe this isn't canon acording to ohter sources, but thats what my heart believes...
I hadn’t finished the whole video before commenting about tharixer. It’s nice to see ya are fimiliar and I would love to see you guys work together on some jak related stuff. This video was great by the way and made me feel like my hundreds of hours of playtime on the series was just scraping the surface of the iceberg
I would have also added the small detail that some characters seem to be aware that they're in a game. Such as when Daxter, In Jak 2, is looking at the very long list that Krew gave the two for the marketing rights he'd be getting as their driver.
There is a pretty long running gag of breaking the fourth wall in the series, and in Jak 3 the character animation galleries have them speaking as though they are being interviewed about the game, like they are actors talking about what happened on set.
16:45 there was actually a way you could switch the discs and be able to explore sandover in jak 2 on the PS2, i did it once and there wasnt much to explore, but it was actually incredible to discover
Wait a second. If Jak is a child born to Damas, 300 years in the future, who is then brought to the past to be raised by Samos, then who is the explorer who claims to be Jak's uncle, and why does he do so?
I thought about this yesterday, my guess is that he's Jak's great great uncle or maybe he pretends to be his first uncle so that Jak doesn't get suspicious about his past
@@Dante_Sparda_DMC I actually think that in Jak 1, he truly was meant to be his uncle, but since Jak 2 went in a completely different direction, Jak's "Uncle" from the first game just became an oversight on Naughty dogs part, something they forgot about or had to ignore when they decided to really flesh out Jak's backstory.
what in the rootin' tootin' gosh darn dingle-dong is the Time Cutter how on earth did I never hear of that I'm absolutely speechless now holy FUCK I've been an absolute nerd of these games since I was a child and I've NEVER EVER found that information, it's absolutely great to stumble across new secrets even after twenty years. I love this community with a passion!
Regarding the typo on the precursor orb, I'm from Europe, Germany to be precise and the layout of a standard PC keyboard has the position of Z and Y switched compared to keyboards from the US for example. Traveling to Switzerland the keyboard layout is completely different than in Germany it's a country by country thing. In detail it's very complicated, some keys like [ and / are in other positions to, wich makes playing some games in the original US versions confusing.
I found a secret in Jak 2. For some reason if you go in the city where the yakows are and that you try to press jak against the rock and some of the wall, it will play a different animation than usual. Don’t know why.
Yo I remember finding that as a kid in Jak II and 3! I always assumed since it's a "hiding" animation it would help lose the KG. It's not specific to that rock but with multiple surfaces and I think it is specific to some surfaces because it doesn't work on every wall. It's weird how it was left in Jak 3 because there is no KG alert but it's probably a left over
47:28 I think the one who carries the light is actually Jak. I mean I know the original idea was for Jak to carry actual light eco, but that idea was scrapped and this voice line "Wait, one of you carries the light" remains. Jak is portrayed a lot through the game as being a pure soul, not to mention he can channel eco. I always got the impression that's why he never spoke, not because he couldn't but because he wouldn't, because he didn't want to speak anything foul, so he didn't speak at all. All that was changed with the dark warrior program and Jak started talking, of course. So between that, and the fact that he can channel light eco in a unique game in Jak 3, I think it's actually him. (Though I think the oracles sense what's present before them rather than predicting the future, since the oracle in Jak II recognized Jak's darkness, while the one in the first game didn't) Daxter may be the same race as the precursors we've seen, but that doesn't prove that ottsels are precursors. Those ones could've simply fallen into dark eco pools the same as Daxter (I know they said something about dark eco containing their DNA or something, but with their charlatan like behavior, I wouldn't be surprised if that was an elaborate lie) Anyway, even if precursors as a whole really are ottsels (Which I believe there's evidence in all the games that this isn't the case) that doesn't necessarily mean that ottsels are precursors, only the other way around. Daxter came out of dark eco, so it would be weird if he carried any sort of light as a result. Not to mention that the dark eco changed his life forever, so his fate was definitely changed by darkness. Nothing about that phrase implies that it was a dark fate, just that his fate would be changed, and it did. Anyway, using hindsight, there's plenty of ways to interpret these words. Maybe the one who carries the light is child Jak, and the one whose fate is corrupted by darkness is also Jak, when they ventured into the tomb of Mar, awakening the giant oracle within. I'm not sure how well this theory holds up, because it requires hindsight and there's probably a few points that don't make much sense. I still like the sort of twist that 'he who carries the light' and 'he whose fate is twisted by darkness' being actually the same person.
Gotta say, the incredible jump in model and animation quality from 2001 (1:55) to 2004 (2:03), just 3 years and both on the PS2, absolutely insane!! Great work, Naughty Dog
The Hole in Precursor City tubes looks like a nod to Crash Team Racing’s map “Roo’s Tubes”. I absolutely adored every single minute of this video and did not want it to end. Incredible job to everyone who put countless hours into this.
Thank you so much for the thorough research on the Jak and Daxter saga! Your dedication and the love you have for the series truly shine through in this video. It's evident that you put a lot of effort into understanding and presenting the details, and as a fan, I really appreciate it. Keep up the fantastic work! New subscriber in here!
Excellent video guys. Thanks for keeping this series alive. Gexup was the man back in the day before he swore off the internet. His ND vs Insomniac series was great.
Did you know there are green eco pickups in Jak 2 the exact same way they are seen in Jak and daxter tpl? And if you pick up 50 you will gain one bar of health. It is found in one of the side missions in the city.. near the area that leads to the arena
Can confirm, there are two collectathon side missions where you need to "clean up" green ecos scattered around isolated sections of the map. Just played through them both five minutes ago lmao
I’ve actually read the entirety of the Jak and Daxter Gag Manga, and… I dunno how to summarize my experience. It was possibly even more insane than the Crash or Klonoa manga (and keep in mind, those had scenes where Crash fell into Apu Apu’s butt, and a scene where Klonoa bleeds from the head after a fridge is dropped on him. All that said, as crazy as it was, I did absolutely love the gag manga. I really love the way that Jak and Daxter are drawn in it, and there are some amazing expressions. I feel like they could’ve made some awesome anime commercials or shorts in a similiar art style and I’d absolutely love em. If any of you have any questions about the gag manga feel free to ask me
That’s great!! These old game adaptions do deserve all the love they can get, imo. Considering they’re often drawn and written by just one person, it’s incredible how long the manage to go, and seeing a mangaka put that much effort into a series we love, well it’s very inspiring. And I really do hope the lost Daxter manga chapters are found. I read the majority of it during my Japan trip, back in high school, I unfortunately didn’t think to actually buy any volumes or take any photos of the magazines I read while I was there. I really do encourage archival of this lost media though, since there are a huge amount of manga adaptions that were never rereleased outside of magazines and are now lost, even for surprisingly big franchises. The holy grails of my lost manga search rn are the rest of the Daxter and Crash manga, the variety of Pokémon manga that were not rereleased, especially the short chapter long adaptions of each of the films that were released in a magazine called “4 Students” (so obscure it’s not even Google-able) and also that one gag manga that was made early in Pokemon’s first generation and has some absolutely crazy stuff in it (like actually pretty politically incorrect / offensive humor, lol)
@@auralunaprettycure The owner of the site shown in the video has the last 2 Jak chapters on their watch list, so hopefully they'll be archived soon. And good luck with your endeavors as well!
So, here's an idea, haven't watched the whole thing so don't know if this gets brought up. Does the community agree that us opening up the Precursor portal is what led to the future being as screwed up as it was? Like, from what I understand and the way the game frames it, the only reason the Metal Heads were able to take control of essentially the known inhabitable world aside from what would become Haven City is BECAUSE we gave Kor a direct entrance to the past that we ended up hiding Jak's child self in. Samos, at the start of the game, outright says "So *this* is how it happened" implying that he still retains memories of his time in the future we end up arriving in. That tells me that he always wondered why the Metal Heads were so prevalent and how things got so bad, and finally realized that it was their mucking about with technology they *didn't actually understand* that led to a world where a tyrannical government and a warrior-based society in a barren wasteland are your only options for some measure of safety. Yes, Jak acknowledges that "This horrible place is our world" but then the question never becomes *"How the hell did this all happen?"* Personally, I think you, as the player, were almost supposed to infer that Daxter's opening of the portal is what screwed things up and allowed the events you play through to take place, but I dunno, I've never seen anyone talk about it and I never had the thought until I beat the PS4 HD version and really started thinking about things.
Two things: 1. I love the collab with all these different creators, and I love how passionate the fans still are for the series. 2. Even though ND has sort of left Jak & Daxter by the wayside, it makes my heart happy to see all the easter eggs in the later games. And the fact that a Daxter Easter egg made it into the R&C movie. I was never the biggest fan of R&C and I only completed the first game (on the PS3 HD collection) so I never felt the desire to watch the movie but I love the easter eggs ND and Insomniac share
There's something I'm not sure was covered in this video, a small glitch you can do in Jak 2 while those security barriers are still up. If you time it just right, you can make Jak hop into a zoomer that's clipped through the wall, and if you get Jak to hop in, sometimes the game will kill you and make you go splat. Not sure how common that knowledge is, but I think it's kinda neat
I refuse to canonize this list until you add the "Daxter is Mar?" theory by Reddit user SuperduperFan92. His evidence is overwhelming, and it even provides context for certain details you saw fit to single out here, such as Daxter's affinity for Jak's insect collection and the former's relationship to bugs in general. Daxter is perpetually suggested, by himself and by the lore, to be far more than a sidekick. Keep in mind that the series' contemporaries pushed the envelope in favour of supporting characters; Clank is pivotal to _Ratchet and Clank,_ amounting to far more than a backpack and taking on active roles in his own right, whereas Bentley and Murray from _Sly Cooper_ occupy and, at certain times, narrate entire sections, culminating in big existential questions about their own status in the Cooper Gang, questions which are not only explicitly addressed in _Honour Among Thieves_ but also resolved by the conclusion of the trilogy. This pattern of glorifying the deuteragonist has unfortunately fallen by the wayside in recent years, yet I doubt that the writers at Naughty Dog made the Precursors ottsels on accident, considering that the entirety of the series was set in motion by Daxter's transmutation into one. It follows logically that Daxter would be the primary candidate to become Mar, since a reversal into humanoid form was never rendered hopeless, given Gol and Maia's ambiguous fate and the entire arsenal of Precursor technology available to the duo at the end of the original trilogy. SuperduperFan92 makes a fine case that Daxter's egoism, grandiose vision, conflicted relationship with insects and arachnids, and various other peculiarities, some of which I intend to add to the list later, predispose him to founding and leading Haven City to an extent that is simply inconsistent with Jak's personality, despite the latter's archetypally heroic character. Some scenes make more sense if read as Easter Eggs whose cinematic choices strongly foreshadow a "Daxter is Mar" reveal, but until the fine men and women at Naughty Dog pull their heads out of their own catacombs we may never know what the canonical interpretation is, and I only hope that, if and when _Jak 4_ is developed, the new camp will have the courage and the decency to honour the intent of the original creators, rather than simply pandering to either the fans or the "new" generation. It would be consistent with the air of legacy and history that this series set up from the very outset, yet given recent practices on the part of the company, including the firing of longtime staff writers, I fear that it will be a Sage's lifetime before we get a satisfying and consistent answer to the Mystery, and perhaps we'll look back on the Mystery with regret and remembrance once it's laid to rest. *Long live Mar.* *[({R.G.)}]*
I'm well aware of the theory, but I haven't read it in years, so I can't exactly give my thoughts on it, but I remember being unconvinced. I actually had a discussion with Superduper in the thread, I'm u/Otsell6008
Boy, I don’t remember the answer to most of these questions and I was there for every minute of the original trilogy’s creation 😜

I always thought that when Gol and Maya fought the yellow sage and he fought back, he kinda... blew up his house in the ensuing fight.
clever theory
It’s weird that in this whole video I open comments to see yours as he’s talking about it
58:05 Another cool tidbit from this tale is that Gil Archeron, the recluse from Japan, shares an almost identical name to Gol Acheron, the dark eco sage and main antagonist of The Precursor Legacy.
Oh yeah, I noticed that a few years ago. Btw that mission is in Jak 2
That's an interesting story! Yeah I'm really glad you did re-upload them, they're so interesting. I really wish there was more
Save content from internet is a hard mission

"In the time before time, when the light bursts from the earth the answers to the questions will begin. But only begin, for still the world will not be ready to learn the truth of its past"
Made me think of the planetary defense system in Jak 3 as the light eco laser fits this description perfectly, not to mention its also when the answers about what the precursors are and the scale of the universe begin.
First game most interesting, true

One thing that wasn’t mentioned was the bikes in Jak X, if you look into one of the concept art pieces for Jak X’s design bible you see Jak on a bike. At some point the studio must of wanted bikes in the game but were cut probably due to lack of time or something a long those lines
Is that pfp when he sees Krew?
whaaat... Were they like the hover bikes in Jak II you have to race or did they have wheels??
@@jinxedsphinx3600 they looked like normal motorbikes with wheels but with a futuristic design for the body of the bike
You are grate
I love how the incredibly difficult mission isn’t actually that difficult once you know what to do. You literally just run for the exit and don’t fight any guards, I beat it first time on every replay now.
I will admit tho, on a first play through it was the most difficult mission
Its a lot less fun that way though
Gonna keep that in mind when I finally play Jak II for the first time

Keep in mind, this is mostly just speculation, though:
It's my belief that there was going to be a somewhat major mechanic in Jak 3 involving the ability to ride MetalHeads.

Jak's "uncle" IS Mar, I bet.

I recently finished Jak 2 but haven't played Jak 3 yet. As soon as I finish it, I *NEED* to come back to this video.
Awesome video as always
I found a secret in Jak 2. For some reason if you go in the city where the yakows are and that you try to press jak against the rock and some of the wall, it will play a different animation than usual. Don’t know why.
Yo I remember finding that as a kid in Jak II and 3! I always assumed since it's a "hiding" animation it would help lose the KG. It's not specific to that rock but with multiple surfaces and I think it is specific to some surfaces because it doesn't work on every wall. It's weird how it was left in Jak 3 because there is no KG alert but it's probably a left over
A remake of the old 3 games with the ratchet & clank rift apart grafics would be so awesome!!
(Though I think the oracles sense what's present before them rather than predicting the future, since the oracle in Jak II recognized Jak's darkness, while the one in the first game didn't)
Daxter may be the same race as the precursors we've seen, but that doesn't prove that ottsels are precursors. Those ones could've simply fallen into dark eco pools the same as Daxter (I know they said something about dark eco containing their DNA or something, but with their charlatan like behavior, I wouldn't be surprised if that was an elaborate lie)
Anyway, even if precursors as a whole really are ottsels (Which I believe there's evidence in all the games that this isn't the case) that doesn't necessarily mean that ottsels are precursors, only the other way around.
Still remember how tickled I was when I found out you could blow that damn pelican up.
Gotta say, the incredible jump in model and animation quality from 2001 (1:55) to 2004 (2:03), just 3 years and both on the PS2, absolutely insane!! Great work, Naughty Dog

Excellent video guys. Thanks for keeping this series alive. Gexup was the man back in the day before he swore off the internet. His ND vs Insomniac series was great.
Lemme speedrun Jak 2 on Vita :3 Also banger video! Gj zeke :D
Honestly after binging this series with no context in 2021 its so gratifying knowing that basically everyone died inside while playing Jak 2
@@KiraTheGameShinigami lmao I was shook when I first did them. All these years and I had no clue.
Oh my god. The old Jak websites and flash games just gave me the biggest burst of nostalgia! Amazing video, thank you!
If any of you have any questions about the gag manga feel free to ask me
That sounds awesome! I actually have the Klonoa manga, and am currently learning Japanese, so I'm looking forward to being able to read these!
It’s real nice to see one of my all time favourite franchises finally getting some recognition again in my old age of today years old.
Here's an idea.. Next time watch the whole video. 👍🏽🙃
Jak and Daxter has one of the best, cool and interesting icebergs
Daxter on PSP definitely has wayyy more hidden messages then mentioned in this video
Really? Cool looks like I have research to do
17:28
Not only are Dark Jak's horns visible, there is also a trail of footprints in his reflection (while not present trailing his real feet)
cant wait to binge this one
edit: 1:08:57 REALLY surprised me. I didnt expect such a big name here.
The stinky man himself
This was great! I'd love cut content vids of each of the Jak games and Daxter too
Damn i didnt even know about the collectors editions. i missed out. Still one of favourite games!
Man.. these games have such an important impact on my life! my absolute favourite game series! Great video well done on everyone involved
The realistic style is not good for Jak. Part of the charm is the art style.
Yes! I have been waiting for this for ages. Thank You!
Two things:
*Long live Mar.*

I'm well aware of the theory, but I haven't read it in years, so I can't exactly give my thoughts on it, but I remember being unconvinced. I actually had a discussion with Superduper in the thread, I'm u/Otsell6008
This was really fun to watch. Well done.
