@ I actually completely agree with that. But just think if they were able to top Jak 1 in a sequel with the same world setting, like expansion even past Gol and Maias citadel. I used to brain storm about this when I was a little kid 😂
The Jak games and the early Ratchet games really are why I love video games, it does make me sad to see Jak sitting on the shelf given how impressive the two more modern ratchet games ended up being, showing you can take those ip and bring them into the modern era of gaming. We can only dream.
Still remember waking up going to the living room and seeing a ps2 with jak and daxter precursor legacy cover beside it. Had no idea what it was, looked cool, launched it. The rest is history
Jak and Daxter along with Ratchet and Clank are the games that ignited my love of video games when I was a kid. I'll always hold them close to my heart.
One of my earliest memories is getting the only thing I wanted for Christmas when I was 8 years old and it was Jak 2, I remember circling it in the Best Buy flyer.
I just got done playing 1 and 2 on my ps3 😭😭 I’m about to start jak3 and dude this nostalgia trip has been amazing, jak2 especially everything about that game was just a vibe
Jak 2 is one of my favorite platformers period. People sleep on it for sure, no other game I can think of is a mix of sandbox, 3d platformer, 3rd person shooter, and driving all mixed into one, which tight controls, constant upgrades, and a serious challenge that keeps you going. Plus that dynamic sound design in the music, eerie, darker setting, mature humor, games a masterpiece. I'll be hated for saying it, but I think its naughty dogs best game they have ever made.
I got Jak 3 on Christmas morning and beat the game the next day... i have never been able to replicate that and Jak 2 was given to me on my boirthday by my best friend growing up
Now youve gotten what you want out of life for yourself. You can now dedicate and lay down your life for a good cause (like animal rights) to renew your sense of purpose.
Jak is one of my favorite franchises of all time. It offered a genuine challenge for me as a kid and I love the evolution from platformer into heavy story driven combat game. It's still amazing how well they made the world's with what felt like minimal "load" times
Matty, you are doing youself dirty for not playing jak X, it is hands down the best racing game Ive ever played, the artstyle, the soundtrack, the gameplay, the story, the voice acting, the world building, its super top notch, as a Jak and Daxter fan, I implore you to give it a shot
These came out at the perfect time for me, including the shift to the goofy edginess of the sequels. I remember making my own Jak & Daxter trading card game with index cards and colored pencils. Eco energy cards, equipment, vehicles, "evolving" Jak to Dark/Light Jak or Errol to Cyber Errol...good times. I still think it'd work well as a digital card game or something! And they've proved the series is big on bending genres, soooo... 🤷♂️ Great video! I love hearing about different people's personal experiences with games. Context always matters when talking about what impacts and affects us!
love this trilogy so much, and desperately want another entry for it. Even Jak X was great for what it was! Edit: I had no idea there were people out there who were down on Jak 3, i thought it was every bit as good as 2. I love them both equally
How on earth has this happened like 3 times this year when I go play through a retro series and you make a video shortly after…. I think we are both on the same wavelength man
My thoughts: Jak 1: Still enjoyable, if a bit simplisitc. But simple doesn't always mean bad Jak 2: Still good, but I feel has aged the worst of the series because of its frustrating difficulty spikes (you know the missions) Jak 3: Still great. @@brando8611 For me its not that the difficulty spikes are to hard. Its moreso alot of them are frustrating, and how random they are. A majority of the hardest missions in jak 2 are in the middle of the game instead of a proper difficulty curve. Most games keep their hardest moments for the very end, But with jak 2 its right at the dead center of the game.
Finally a video about Jak and daxter! I’m the same age as you Matty and these games were a pivotal turning point in my gaming journey. Although I did start with crash, I moved into TPL and fell in love right away. This is hands down my fave game series and jak 2 being my favorite game of all time becuase of how far ND pushed the needle from TPL. These games will always hold a special place in my heart. Great retrospective, thanks Matty🙏🏼🫡
Almost all of your observations like how jak 2 made you realize how good games were and jak three made you realize you loved post apocalyptic wastelands and whatnot, I had those exact same experiences. Its eery how your like putting voice to ideas I thought were just mine haha im right there with you dude and the references to sly that’s my other favorite game series. 😂
As someone who played all of these when they launched from 2001-2004, here’s my take: Jak and Daxter: A game both of its time and ahead of its time. A fairly standard platformer at its core, but also made seriously impressive strides forward on a technical level. No obvious loading screens, a huge interconnected world (protocol open world even), real time day and night cycles, eye popping weather effects, and graphics that made its contemporaries feel an entire generation behind. A fun, simple story, likable characters, and genuinely fun and varied gameplay. Jak 2: A bold, even risky change of tone from its predecessor while also evolving the story into a more compelling and mature direction. The animation quality and sheer volume of cutscenes was unheard of in 2003 and is still impressive today, frankly. Visually stunning, creates a living, breathing, immaculate reality. The addition of gunplay is a welcome one, as is the concept of Dark Jak. However, Jak 2 is held back by its unnecessary difficulty and baffling lack of checkpoints, both of which were not issues in the previous title. It’s tough game, but not in a way that always feels fair. It could have benefited from an upgrade system greatly. Still a great game and likely the best story in the series. Jak 3: A direct continuation of Jak 2 while, also adding more rural environments similar to the first title, combing the aesthetics of Jak and Daxter and Jak 2. The difficulty is much more balanced with the addition of health increasing armor that is doled out as the games challenge increases. The checkpoint system is also not neglected this time, making a still challenging game, much more fun and manageable. The vehicles are more present in both mission type and variety. Thankfully, they’re more durable and easy to control than in Jak 2. The wasteland is a real standout both in terms of its scope and technical ambition, almost like a playable Mad Max on the PS2. The story, plot holes aside, is stellar and ends the series on a genuinely exciting and climactic moment. A masterpiece.
Dude Jak II endgame was just me hunting down the precursor eggs to unlock cheat codes. Infinite dark Jak + giant dark Jak was the GOAT, just going around spreading total chaos, seeing how long I could last against the Crimson Guard was fun as heck!
I remember J&D3 was my first PS2 game I got for Christmas along with the console. I think I was like 11 or 12 yrs old. My mom couldn’t afford the memory card so I would play this game from the start every single time and everytime I got further it would be a blast. Good ol times
I remember seeing the trailer for Jak 2 on TV and my elementary school mind being blown. I begged my dad so hard for those $40 and a ride to K-mart. I remember these games fondly.
The first video games I ever played was the first Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank when I got a PS2 for Christmas when I was in first grade. I’ve been enjoying Ratchet and Clank these days a lot more just because there are so many more games in the series, but Jak and Daxter will always be my favorite. I’d love for another one to come out someday, even if it’s just to wrap up a few loose ends and end it once and for all.
I think if memory serves, Jak 1 was released a year prior to the first Ratchet & Clank game. It was a great time for platformers and the evolution of the genre over the subsequent sequels. I would love to see a remake of the original trilogy like toys 4 bob did for Spyro. They released the PS4 version a few years back & just recently added the PS2 version into the classics collection, 2 versions of a classic with different trophy lists for some reason, another reason to go back for another playthrough not that i needed an excuse to.
I still love all those cartoon games from the ps2, and I still have them, but nobody talks about the Dark Cloud, or Maximo games from that Era, It was great seeing someone talk about Jac and Dexter games, love your videos, please do one on the above games I mentioned .
Jak and Daxter will forever be one of my favorite game series of all time. Also, Jak X is still my favorite racing game. Me n the boys used to challenge each other to see who can finish a race the fastest, good times.
I would love a full remaster of these games. I love the art style and the worlds and I think it would be awesome to see the world in a new high def version
I really wish that they kept the fun, mystical feel that the first game had. Jak II, and 3 aren't bad, but it just felt weird to change the series so much. Jak 1 was one of my first video games ever, and it took me years to realize how ahead of it's time is was; no loading screens, day night cycle, and completely open world were incredible feats in 2000. I just replayed the game for the first time in maybe 10 years (PS5 emulation) and wow still holds up. I also played Daxter for the first time since i never owned a psp and wow, that game is not good 😂
The only thing I’d like is a remaster with quality of life improvements like NG+, updated menus where the costumes and more stuff like that are through vendors in game which means more cosmetics (obv no microtransactions, but it keeps players out of the start menu), extra abilities or guns or ways of traversal, more open world activities, potentially a rogue like element hahaha
When it comes to Intergalactic, they've stated already that it's about arriving on that Planet (I forgot the name) that hasn't had anyone leave in 600+ Years and the game is about figuring out what happened and getting out essentially... Basically I believe the Ship/Space part is strictly the beginning of the game and mostly Cutscene then we'll be playing/exploring on that planet for the whole game (seems like it'll be open world, or at least much more open than Uncharted/TLoU... I can imagine it being somewhat Linear as we've come to expect but with TONS more of those "Open Chapters" that we got in U4/TLoU2)
I got the first Jak and Daxter as a kid with a ps2 for Christmas but I didn't get too far, I didn't have a memory card and the ps2 was sold on a garage sale a few months later. But what I did play was pretty fun
We need a dark gritty game where Jak returns to the events following the metal head invasion prior to Heaven Cities founding, gathering survivors and refugees of mass genocide, famine, and the desertification of the rest of their continent due to the MH spilling dark eco silos without regard for the environment. Imagine a much older Jak interacting with characters seen in TPL.
They really had something special with the Precursor Legacy, and while I do love 2 & 3 the Precusor Legacy is in a tier of its own. The atmosphere, the whimsical magic in the eco, appealing character design (looking at you Krew). I've been looking for Precursor Legacy in other games for a long time and have never found anything close.
The short answer for Jak X - If you like your racing games and weapons then you'll like Jak X and it's Story is actually not too bad considering its genre. Heavy recommend it!
"Good story considering it's genre" is a far more accurate and appropriate description for the game than "story not too bad considering its genre". While the story is good though, it's the writing that steals the show.
I remember when my brother gave me his PS2. All 3 Jak games were included. I started playing the first one and I got a few levels in until I decided I didn't want to play knockoff Banjo Kazooie anymore. Maybe I'll give it a try again someday but... probably not.
I played every naughty dog Jak game in perfect reverse order by accident, including Daxter. Afterward, I found out a friend of mine had Jak 1, and I traded him Jak 3 for 2 weeks
Jak and daxter has been all over my suggestions YES the jak trilogy is quintessential gaming You dont know what a good game is unless you played at least 2 of the 3
TLDR; YES. The first one was the first game I ever played, so I adore the series. I recently played all three and they are still incredible. The tone shift works wonders for advancing it's narrative and characters.
I hope Naughty Dog has extracted every trick out of the hat with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet to use evrrything the PS5 can do. I want to see a game that delivers on Mark Cerny design goals and vision with the internal SSD of zero loading screens, no narrow corridors and elevators to load assets between parts of the map, no long patches when updates arise and a vast detailed word to explore.
I imagine in the right hands, Intergalactic may be The Precursor Legacy seamless world, multiplied by like a million and in space, in a nutshell. Or at least i wish. It really can be a revolutionary game if you can travel with the spaceship as you like, in a seamless way, and leave manually the spaceship, in any part of the planet in any planet.
These 3 games are really special, I love the first the most probably. Seeing crash and jak and daxter referenced in the new Naughty Dog trailer hit me with a twinge of sadness, nothing on judging the new game, we know very little about it, but it's just a reminder that those games are of a bygone era, one I really miss.
Yo When you mention about the sly games, My favorite is the third because with all the cool mini games and plus you can replace them I like sly 2. Is like what else is there for you to do?

Just don't play the port on PS4, it has literally made me hate the games so now I actually just wanna play them on PS2 or just find a better way
I just wish they stuck with the theme of the first one in this ancient otherworldly sort of mystical civilization as opposed to edgy future
@@JorbinocusThis. Jak 2 is a slog compared to the First one. The 3rd is a decent blend of both. The Sand Dune buggies were awesome,

Great series. Naughty Dog never misses
My childhood
I really hope we get the PC ports soon. They’re fan made and only the first game is done so far but it plays so incredibly well
Jak and daxter has been all over my suggestions
YES the jak trilogy is quintessential gaming
You dont know what a good game is unless you played at least 2 of the 3
TLDR; YES. The first one was the first game I ever played, so I adore the series.
I recently played all three and they are still incredible. The tone shift works wonders for advancing it's narrative and characters.
The Jak series is definitely one of my favorites. Love the world and character designs.
Absolutely these games are fantastic. My favorite one is the first one.
Jak & Dexter
Vs
Sly Cooper & the gang
Vs
Ratchet & Clank!
Edit: ✍🏾
Also underrated Ty the tasmanian tiger! 🐅
God I miss playing the Jak and Daxter games so much. 2 was definitely the hardest out of the bunch but loved the story!
Seeing this made so many memories come back😢❤
What are the odds... I just started replaying the Jak trilogy and he makes this vid. I'm praying we get Jak 4 one day 😢
Yea it is
I’ve been gaming since 1999, Jak & Daxter is still my GOAT game. 🐐
I really want to get inti them but I didn't like 1 much can I skip it?
Imagine a new game in this day and age.. and the amount of precurso lore. That what I really wish we had more of. Precursor lore!
This is my top 5 series from my youth.
Yo When you mention about the sly games, My favorite is the third because with all the cool mini games and plus you can replace them I like sly 2. Is like what else is there for you to do?
