They already have gone the distance.. plenty of Lexus vehicles have turbo charged engines.. it’s a manufacturing issue not a design flaw. With 30k or more parts in a vehicle it’s not gonna come out perfect immediately. The 5.7 is a great example of that. It had plenty of issues.
They should have used the 2.7 4banger, I have no idea why they went with such a small displacement. I am currently driving my 1999 Tacoma 4cyl with a 5 speed manual transmission. I paid $11,000 for it new from the dealer. Wish I had purchased two looking back on it. I picked up a 2003 Tundra 2yrs ago for $5,000 with 170k miles. Still driving it. I am very disappointed with the newer Toyota trucks after about 2010 because I can't afford them. I am always on the lookout for a deal on the older models. Wish they would get it together. They have priced themselves out of the market. I don't think it's a debri issue with the engines. It's an engineering issue. Turbocharged engines a notoriously hard on the crank and rod bearings, plus throw in a lack of sufficient lubrication to the bearings.
This sort of things happen to every company. They all fail at some point. If Toyota wants to fix this issue, they better work fast or it is all over for them. They need to retool and go back to their previous power train and figure it out.

Thanks Deb and Mo, I wouldn’t drop $50k on a Tacoma or any vehicle, I and many people simply can’t afford it. The turbo worries me since it’s unproven right now. The back seat room is tight and not enough space, they should have made the back seat 1/2 or an option, I’d rather have it empty for storage or only 1/2 seat. But yeah the Tacoma is a disappointment, it’s price is too high, I’m not sold on the turbo 4 since it is more maintenance and it’s reliability and longevity is questionable and the back seat doesn’t work for me. We’ll see what Toyota does about both trucks in the next few years, Toyota has a major problem right now. I wouldn’t buy either one of them. I hope they’re listening.
This man is making a very very great point. But the problem is you have people in America who buy these trucks. if you stop buying these trucks, the price will come down. And Mr. Toyota and company know that. But they also know that we will sell some definitely in the US 😂. Stop buying them.
Toyota is breaking my heart. Got rid of an unreliable 1979 Chevy truck and bought a spanking new 1981 Toyota SR5 pickup. Toyota and Lexus served me well over all these years but I would not buy one today. Glad I bought my RX350 when I retired. There's a good possibility it could be the last car I purchase.
The value of my 2009 Tacoma is that the vehicle will rust away around the running drivetrain. The 4.0, It will go forever. Never been said of a 4 banger turbo.
Yea the Tundra V6 has been recalled they are spinning bearings in the engine evidently due to machining shavings being left in the engine per another video I saw.
I bought a V6 2024 4Runner a few weeks ago. I hope to get over 200,000 miles out of it like I did with my 2004 Sequoia. Feel like I dodged a bullet buying a new 4Runner before they start selling the 4 cylinder version.
@@MassReelFishing Yep. and those prices won't go down either. Inflation is here to stay. Other than that, and the CAFE regulations, consumers are the idiots responsible for the high prices as well. People want their cars faster so they can get to the next red light faster and more powerful, even though they don't tow. They want their goofy, distracting infotainment centers, blutooth and power everything. Don't even get me started on automatic transmissions. If the majority of people weren't morons and were just ok with simple reliable vehicles, the prices would be at least 20% less across the board.
My coworker bought a brand new '24 Tundra TRD Off-Road 4x4 in that really nice blue color back in late October 2023. This was one of the first of the '24s to hit our local dealership at the time when he was there. Beautiful truck I may add. But he traded his '21 Tacoma TRD Sport which was a very nice truck, fully loaded with all the options including the sunroof. Well, not even a month and a half ago at the time of me typing this today, his brand new Tundra blew the engine with literally just under 9k miles. The junk couldn't even make it to 10k miles. Funny thing is, we all told him to hang on to his Tacoma because he was without his new Tundra for almost two months....while paying his $1400 monthly payments on it. Boy did he ever regret buying that Tundra...and he is so pissed at himself for getting rid of his Tacoma...live and learn.
I have the same truck as you, but mine is a 2018. I got it lifted with Gear rims and KO2s. I LOVE the thing, and I'm SOOOO glad I have a third generation. The TURBO is turning most people off. Toyota dropped the ball with this decision.
Yep , I have been buying Toyota's since 1982 . Whoever is running TOYOTA has really screwed up !! Nobody that wants dependability and longevity would buy one of these OVER PRICED , ready to break . Tundra or Taco . I also have a 22 Taco. All Toy would have needed to do is , fix the transmission in the V6 Taco , and kept the V8 in the Tundra . They should have put turbo's in their cars and small SUV ' s and left the V6 and V8 engines . I am now , after 42 yrs of buying Toyota's . Looking to buy a V8 truck , which I can no longer get at Toyota . REALLY DUMB MOVE , TOYOTA !!!
I’ve been buying Toyota since 1986. I was waiting patiently to buy a Tacoma Trailhunter. But now I’m looking at the Nissan Frontier Pro-4x. I can’t believe I’m saying that…
I've had Toyotas for decades. The first one I bought was the Corona circa 1970s. I currently have a premium 2018 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road. It's been a flawless vehicle just like my previous, 2011 4Runner. I've gotten my daughter and grand daughter Corollas and Camrys. It's a shame what has happened to the Toyota brand. Besides the engine downsizing they are making them in Mexico. I'll stick with my 2018. I hear they are also putting this four cylinder turbo engine in the next generation 4Runner :( I was looking at the new Land Cruiser but the cost (71K+) and it's engine stopped my interest. It looks like I'll have to check out Nissan (Datsun) when I'm in the market again. At least Nissan still offers a V-6 without a turbo. Thanks for your video Mo. :)
Let it sit there and rot on the lot insane what they are charging for these trucks. I have a 2020 off-road I paid 38,000 for now that truck is over 50 insane.
Drove NINE Toyotas, leaving. Price, twin turbos, small engines, thru have lost me and their resale. Eight are still running with family members! These have over 1.5 million miles. No problems. Now: 5,000 miles oil changes, turbo mounted on top the engine, causing extra heating. Complicated engine, making like my problem filled BMW. Really sad.
A lot of people will buy a 4 cylinder truck for $56k. It's cheaper than $80 for a GM v8. Don't believe everything you read online. I have a 2016 F150 2.7 v6 twin turbo and I just went 8,500 miles before I change my oil. It still has the stock turbos @ 103k miles. I didn't have to add any oil. I can seen you a link to the oil change video.
I owned a 99 4cyl 4x4 auto, 212k miles, handed it down, son got another 3 yrs before trading it in. THE TURBO FSN BOY AT TOYOTA NEEDS FIRED, HE COST MILLIONS, AND PISSED OF MILLIONS CUSTOMERS, ill be back when they learn how to make reliiable engines again, not holding my hreath
To me, Toyota lost the storyline when they made their truck hybrid powertrains for power and not gas efficiency. Rav4 hybrid/ PHEV are more powerful and fuel efficient than the ICE version. Why not the trucks?
Imagine the margins on a truck when you can drop the price 10k to 20k? Toyota took a step forward with the land cruiser and a step back with the Tacoma and tundra.
X Series is a Southeast Toyota product and not offered by Toyota. For those that don't know Southeast Toyota is a private distributor with rights to distribute Toyotas to certain Southern states. They essentially have a monopoly on the market in those states.

I have a 2007 tacoma Access cab, 2.7 liter. The only weak point was coolant bypass hose, upgraded to metal, indestructible motor!
My 3.5L Lexus passed 300K miles. Will never go for the new turbo models.
SRD I never see one before 😂
Don't even know what he got. Lol
😅👍🏻 right
SRD? 😂😂I thought is TRD.
Toyota needs to go back to the V8 and get rid of the V6
V8 and V6 are fine it’s the turbo
This man is making a very very great point. But the problem is you have people in America who buy these trucks. if you stop buying these trucks, the price will come down. And Mr. Toyota and company know that. But they also know that we will sell some definitely in the US 😂. Stop buying them.
'17 tacoma offroad ownder and I'm not looking at the 4th gen version at all, would rather get a different brand with NA v6 vs turbo 4.
What did your 2022 cost?
Great review and to the point!!
I have a 2021 tundra. Last of the good ones. Mine is going up in price fast
I bought a V6 2024 4Runner a few weeks ago. I hope to get over 200,000 miles out of it like I did with my 2004 Sequoia. Feel like I dodged a bullet buying a new 4Runner before they start selling the 4 cylinder version.
Where can I buy a 3 bed room house 🏠 for 80k??
I want 5 of them???
My neighbor paid $48,990 for his 2022 TRD PRO. 2024 TRD PRO $66,000 + 😮
Yep that's what I paid for my '22. Got it at MSRP. I can't believe they've jacked the price that much, yikes.
The price hike is criminal.
@@jamesm.1467 Damn. I hate to hear stories like that, but they're becoming increasingly common with these Tundras
Toyota should give people a choice instead of pushing everyone to buy turbos.
I have the same truck as you, but mine is a 2018. I got it lifted with Gear rims and KO2s. I LOVE the thing, and I'm SOOOO glad I have a third generation. The TURBO is turning most people off. Toyota dropped the ball with this decision.
How is a turbo engine more maintenance? I had 5 and they never needed more maintenance than a NA
Probably cars
Hey thanks for your thoughts and I believe you are right. Have a great day
Yep , I have been buying Toyota's since 1982 . REALLY DUMB MOVE , TOYOTA !!!
test drive a titan
@@slumy8195 Thought about it , but I do wonder about reliability .
@@indycharlie the 17 and 18 suck. Because it was the new trans versions. I think the 21+ are the best version atm.
@@slumy8195 Thanks for the info !
I’ve been buying Toyota since 1986. I was waiting patiently to buy a Tacoma Trailhunter. But now I’m looking at the Nissan Frontier Pro-4x. I can’t believe I’m saying that…
Had my 22 Tundra for 38,000 miles so far. No issues yet. Hopefully mine is not affected.
Didn't they halt all sales of the tundra??? Are they still selling them?
Drove NINE Toyotas, leaving. Price, twin turbos, small engines, thru have lost me and their resale.
Eight are still running with family members! These have over 1.5 million miles. No problems. Now:
5,000 miles oil changes, turbo mounted on top the engine, causing extra heating.
Complicated engine, making like my problem filled BMW. Really sad.
Toyota.....give us back our V8 please
Never ever buy a pick up truck with a 4cyc engine. V6 or V8 is the only way to go, unless your just hauling grocery.
So glad I bought a 23 SR5. Long box no options.
Glad I purchased my 2023 trd pro Tacoma for $52k. Last of the V6!
Still got ripped off..
@@efeaster3680 naw not compared to this electric hybrid garbage
To me, Toyota lost the storyline when they made their truck hybrid powertrains for power and not gas efficiency. Rav4 hybrid/ PHEV are more powerful and fuel efficient than the ICE version. Why not the trucks?
Sorry, did you mean TRD? Or SR5. Never heard of the SRD package
Sorry TRD
thanks for the info. Will not even test driving them either. Guess I'll go with Nissan or the old big 3.
Imagine the margins on a truck when you can drop the price 10k to 20k?
Toyota took a step forward with the land cruiser and a step back with the Tacoma and tundra.
My momma didn't raise no fool 😂
Those V6 tundras are at best worth $40k. Overpriced and unproven like most cars on sale nowadays.
I love my 2016 Tundra SR5 4x4 with the V8
It was reasonable priced when I bought it and now the newer tundras to me are expensive JUNK !
X Series is a Southeast Toyota product and not offered by Toyota. For those that don't know Southeast Toyota is a private distributor with rights to distribute Toyotas to certain Southern states. They essentially have a monopoly on the market in those states.
I agree but lost me at a 3 bedroom for 80k 😂😂
In Rocky Mt NC , 90k small home
And the sheet metal is much thinner. See how easily they dent
The Tundras seats are thinner to save weight which means long haul comfort sacrificed.
We’ll see the 2024 are not supposed to have any problems. There was debris left in the 2022s and 2023. I love my tundra. It is so powerful so smooth so quiet I got my limited edition 4 x 4 for $50,000 discounted with tax 55 love it
I’m so happy I purchased a 23 GX 460💙the V8!!!! Toyota V8 and V6 engines are the most reliable engines on the market planet 🌍!!!!
You are 100% correct!!! And by the way, don't sell your beautiful late model Tacoma! That one is a keeper!
There is a recall on those engines, bad because of manufacturing processes
Fools (fanboys) and their money are soon parted…
That can be said for every make of truck.
@@timalan7406 I didn’t mention any specific truck or manufacturer. I merely stated a generally known saying. I do understand that Toyota fanboys are especially sensitive towards any criticism of Toyota.
@@thadlm2698 True
Gotta ask, what do you drive. A Dodge?
@@panchog2552 Why would you assume I drive a Dodge?🤔
Some dealerships has a 10k markup on a 2024 Tacoma sr5
You are right except the dealers are covering the engine problems because it’s under warranty. However all new trucks are going to shit.
Standard warranty probably good for three years, if so then you’re on your own after that, unless there’s another recall.
Warranty will cover a new engine or short block one time only. So after that any engine issues, the owner is on his/her own... bust out the wallet $$.
@@PRO4XKEV and if its a design flaw...too bad...no piece of mind in owning one...
Thank You
Lovingly assembled in Mexico at $2.70 an hour for labor.
I was considering a Toyota but I do my research.... no way!!!!! Had the market locked and they got greedy and lost their rep. They have never been the best looking and still aren't it was the reliability and affordability that made them appealing.
They've done the same thing to 4 runners I' m keeping my 2008 V 8. Tell Mike Miller the best mechanic they' ve got at Concord hello.
As long as the stand behind their mistakes and do their best to make things right I guess they'll do fine
I was looking at a Tundra....but at these prices and the engine issues....no thank you!
Toyota is paying workers in Mexico 2.70 per hour to build these trucks. How can anyone think these workers care about what they are doing? Would you really expect anything else? My 2006 Matrix 4WD (made in Ontario) has 225,000 miles and still runs perfectly.
Plastic skid plates, 2 fuel injection systems, turbo to boost the undersized engine- forget it!
The only improvements:
Full box frame
Coil suspension
Cab seating position.
Plenty of fools out there buying up these 4 cylinder truck’s at north of $50k.
dig this bro and it’s made in Baja Mexico!!! Go figure😵💫
Bought a 2010 tundra for 10,000. 256k miles. Never even idles out of 100 rpm. Transmission is still ahifting like silk.
2007 5.7 crewmax 293K. I will be looking for a 2021 5.7 crewmax in a couple of years, if I can't find a 5.7 tundra, 6.6 used 2500 HD with no AFM or DOD, I'm my own mechanic, I know the Chevy transmission might not last as long, But what else is there, just continue to drive my 2007. Turbo charged motors are not bad, the problem is EPA emissions and a lean air fuel ratio. I'm about to twin turbo a V8 chevelle, but it doesn't haft to meet EPA standards, richer fuel will keep it cool. Bring back the 5.7
I've always said Toyota is overpriced and way overrated. And now look at the Quality.
Love the SRD's
Thanks for the heads up 👍
Its not only Toyota, all truck companies raised their prices & quality has gone down.
Thank you for the information.
