Toyota never was what people hyped it up to be- especially the ones not built in Japan. The only difference between Toyota and other manufacturers is that they sat on antiquated drivetrains for years longer than most. You nailed it, again. The stock on the lot is a liability they have to move before they can recall it. Simple solution here: DO NOT buy a 3rd Gen Tundra, 4th Gen Tacoma, soon to come 6th Gen 4Runner (and possibly the turbo'ed Land Cruiser and Lexus GX) until Toyota's quality control failure and exhorbitant pricing era have passed. Your money is better spent elsewhere. Everything that made Toyota trucks great (bulletproof reliability, fair pricing, incredible resale) is all gone now.

Makes sense that they would, the only just found the cause recently.
Theoretically the 25s shouldn't have it, but I think the damage has already been done. Even the lifter failures on the 2020 Super Duties didn't push people away this hard. And Ford finally seems to have gotten a handle on that with the 23s and 24s.

Plenty of examples of 24's with bearing / camshaft failures on the forums. Looking more like the main bearing is overheating, not getting lubricated enough and its rocking causing the camshaft failure. Also the engine girdle has little reinforcement (cheap) and can't handle extra boost of the turbos. This engine is garbage.

You actually think they are going to sell unsafe vehicles? Imagine the possibility of huge law suits if something was to happen. No way Toyota exposes themselves to that. Not only that the recall can’t be that big of a safety issue if the NHSTA hasn’t issued a do not drive order. If Toyota wanted to they did not have to come forward with the recall at all and just kept it buried. I guess that’s the norm now, go down the rabbit hole.

    • @HiPlains1
      @HiPlains1 6 місяців тому

@@vitkobylka6432 LOL. They didn't care about trucks breaking in half from rusted frames with that cheap C channel design. I don't see Frontiers doing that with its fully boxed one. They fought that class action tooth and nail. They ended with a 3.4 billion settlement to replace frames. Don't kid yourself they all do what they can to mitigate losses. Also when you look at the facts Toyota is not being transparent. Many reports of main bearing failure/camshafts blowing up on 2024's. You can bet they know about those as they are in service bays. Yet the story saying debris left in engine on 22's and 23's. Many dealers have these stacked on the lots. If they recall those there would be a stop sell across the board. I don't see Toyota taking that much of a hit with their dealers and reputation. Its mitigation at play with their legal department. Toyota will lose all if this ends up being a design defect. Which I feel it is after looking at the tear downs on how they made this motor.

I ended up finding a great deal on a D40 Frontier and I paid cash, no interest, no extra fees. I had to put about 500 bucks and 20 hours of my time cleaning it up and repairing a few small things but that's a small price to pay for a nice, reliable, old school truck that doesn't need thousands of dollars in specialized equipment to maintain it. It just doesn't seem that they did full on-road testing if it's not the debris and it's in the bottom end. The thing is if any debris could get up in the heads up near the turbos you can't just replace the block and put the old parts back on. That's just asking for the engine to blow up again. I am still not convinced that the left over shavings (or metal debris) are causing the Tundra engines to break down. Not that it is not possible, but I doubt that they did not catch that during a quality control check. There were similar reporting failures with the Lexus LS500, so maybe the cause of the engine failures is not what Toyota says.
In my opinion, people are buying Toyota vehicles mostly because of their reputation for reliability, building long lasting vehicles, and having higher resale values. The issue with the new Tundra is, even if they fix the issue with this new engine, that truck will never hold its value as the old Tundra did. Just look at the engine bay and see how inaccessible it is to work on. Would you buy such a truck knowing that some simple fixes will require costly repairs like separating the cab from the frame or pulling a lot of parts in order to have an access?
No one is talking about that right now. Let see what will happen when turbos start burning and owners end up paying thousands of dollars. I think that will be very detrimental.

I’d see the government getting involved on this and a big class action lawsuit potentially.
If I was buying a 24’ tomorrow I’d want the dealership to put in writing they will buy the truck back at my purchase price if it gets added to the recall. That will show ya what they really think internally about the 24 model year 😂

I believe its the block it self is not braced enough to handle the additional weight of the trucks and SUVS. They work fine in the cars and smaller SUVs cause they are designed originally for them. Ford had to add more material to the 2.7-3.5 turbo 6's for rigidity. The blocks are twisting under loads causing the crank bearings to shift and change the oiling holes locations. This will starve the bearings from getting adequate oil supply. The Ram 1500 hurricane 3.0 is having issues as well. Cost cutting is harming all vehicle manufacturers now for higher profits.

I purchased my Tundra SR5 the 2023 version by the end of 2022. I checked on the NHTSA (just inserted the VIN#) and I had bad luck, it is one of them being recalled. I put on it already 29500 miles and no issue so far. I am wondering if I dodged the bullet because when I got the Tundra after 1000 miles I changed the oil, and at the 5000 miles I changed again. Then I put a magnetic screw at the oil pen. At the 10000 miles interval I checked the screw and there weren't attached any machining debris to it. I am changing the oil every 5000 miles and do not see any debris being attached to the screw. I do not know if the machining debris causing the recall would be in the oil or not, if they would be I hope I flushed them out with the first two oil changes. Please, someone with knowledge of the issue give your opinion if it was possible for me to dodge the bullet with what I did, or the machining debris contamination would be somewhere else and would not find them in the oil. Tanks in an advance.

There are so many opinions on this that I don't know what to think. I can't see where Toyota can get away with it ethically to not disclose engine debris (if they know about it) in the 2024 Tundras. Having done the research over the past month, I think Toyota's story on the recall might be legit. These bearings are oil fed on a parallel circuit, so the damage being confined to the main bearing is plausible. Knock on wood, but absolutely no issues so far with my late 2023 at 10K miles. I totally get the emotionally driven reactions people are having on this issue. But to put it in perspective only about 900 units have actually failed (about 1%). What if this is a design defect? I'm not impressed with the tear down on the engine girdle. Its not reinforced like Ford's 2.7 or GM's 2.7. IMO the main bearing is getting too hot causing it to rock causing camshaft failures. Even with large discounts who wants this headache? They cheaped out on this engine. Like the Tacoma its under built. The taco has a weak rear diff. They had to "de tune" the manual shift models because they did not feel it would handle hard shifting and dropping the right pedal etc.. Many MT failures now. And when towing loads the rear diff is overheating. All indicators that the truck is under built. Cheaper parts, cheaper labor, with bad designs along with bigger price. That would be a hard no. Toyota is doing the voluntary recall because they know if left to NHTSA they will probably order a stop sell across the board. Which IMO, is what needs to happen.

When I worked for toyota here in alberta.. if there was a safety recall on a vehicle that hadn't been sold, it was a stop sale.. until it was fixed... We had several units that were sold but we held them for up to 6 weeks while the recall was developed & the fix implemented..
From what I see, the recall is for 22-23 units... don't you think it's possible that they found the issue before the 24 was released & "cleared" the debris in the production line??
It is actual law that dealerships must fix recalls before selling a unit (used or new)
Keep in mind that toyota does more recalls cause they care about their customer base.. The old recall when unintended acceleration came about involved a gas pedal modification.. Did Pontiac recall the Vibe for that??? NOOO.. strange cause it had the exact same gas pedal in it. The real reason for those unintended accels was 99% of the time multiple floor mats that jammed up the gas pedal or brake pedal..
As for the bells & whistles... every manufacturer is doing it.. it's what the new drivers want... I wish they didn' t have it. As far as I'm concerned, toyota is slower to bring those bells & whistles to market.

I still trust Toyota. When the last generation Tundra started, they had similar issues, and they built the reliability over years. The same is going to happen with this Tundra. Their going to get all the kinks out in the first year's once the processed is streamlined. I was going to buy a Tundra and most likely still will once prices go down. They price me out of their SR5, and I have had 2 SR5 Tundras before. I think Toyota probably would lower the SR5 and limited prices to get them off the lots. An SR5 should not cost over 50K, and some are 65K because of dealers wanting profit. There are small percentage of engines that are affected, but Toyota is cautious with the recalls and probably waits to an issue if any pop up in a 24. The Sequoia isn't being recalled, and some lexus models with the same engine. It's not all doom and gloom. I trust Toyota more than Ford, GM, and Ram. RAM even had to lower prices, but they have their own issues with their sinking ship.

Thanks for sharing that man. That’s ridiculous you couldn’t get reimbursed for that back in the 90s… insane. Toyota is definitely selling off as many 24s as they can before looping it into the recall. We are seeing so many 24 owners bump into the same issues.

Toyota has been down this road before. They had a class action lawsuit for oil consumption for certain models from 2006-2011. It all depends on what they do to fix this issue. My hope is that they will correct course and continue putting out quality, reliable vehicles.

DEBRIS doesn't cause engine failure 32k miles later...from the factory.
It is a weak part breakdown. Not an unclean engine

As someone who has worked for Toyota for the last 13+ years...everything in this video is a sad fact. Same is/will be true for the Tacoma and soon to be 4Runner. I just bought a '24 TRD PRO 4Runner...last of the dinosaurs...for this exact reason. Get them while you can...Toyota is in trouble and they have no one to blame but themselves.

Appreciate you adding some credibility to this, thank you. It’s a shame Toyota has gotten to this point. Smh…

Highlander already met it's fate since the 23 is a turbo the 22 was the last naturally aspirated V6.

Will probably get wife a new Toyota rav4 I’ll start driving her older one and park my tundra and keep miles down.

Nope I’m done with Toyota that’s what they get for being greedy and having them trucks made in Mexico where the labor rate is $2.75 an hour .

I absolutely think u r correct. Toyota don't want to include 2024 yet because they can't sell a recall vehicle. So toyota wants to sell it first and do recall later.
