PEOPLE SAID EVERYONE WORKING IN STUDIO ALL CAME OUT TO SEE HIM SING COZ THEY COULDNT BELIEVE WHAT THEY WERE HEARING..THIS PERFORMANCE WILL ECHO THRU TIME
I swear I've seen every reaction to this song and, while they never get old, this one stands above the rest personally. The technical knowledge shared helps give someone with no training a much deeper appreciation for a performance we all adore. Thank you for sharing and glad you enjoyed Disturbed!
I think it's a great loss not to listen to it one time through with out comment. You don't get the emotional impact when you don't let the feeling grow.
My favorite parts of all reactions to this song are A. the part where they start tripping over their words because they're so excited, and B. The point where the sit and stare open mouthed, so entranced that they even forget to react 😂
Such a powerful version of this song deserves to be experienced emotionally, not paused and discussed. Stops in the song kill the dramaturgy of the song. Too bad. Good reactors discuss the song at the end and don't stop it. Sorry
@@netcomaut Disagree. She's a vocal coach, she's here to discuss and analyse as she goes. When we want to just watch the song we can do that on the original video.
Great reaction! David had the flu when he did this, that's why he was sitting on a stool. Trained as a Cantor like his father and grandfather. Paul Simon liked it so much that he linked to it on his social media. (The only version, out of all the other covers that people have done.)
Copy and paste rubbish yet again when will it ever end. He was feeling under the weather, as he has stated many many many times he had the sniffles that is all, influenza aka the flu is a killer and leaves you totally bed bound and not able to do the simplest of things let alone get dressed travel to a studio and perform live. People love this performance and rightly so but some feel the need to try and make it better than it was by throwing the flu tag around. Stop believing what the internet says, and posting rubbish.
This is one of the few live performances that I like so much I can listen over and over and over and keep finding new small details to relish in... a masterclass of singing by a true vocal master.
I do really love how he weaponizes his signature gritty sound in this song by not using at all until the end of the song to accentuate the lyrics and really give them an extra punch. Then for the last 3 lyrics he takes it away again.
I think this might be my favourite cover ever. To take such a classic song and change it but it still retain its message is a rare gift. Plus David’s voice is something to behold
Oh wow. This was new for you! Fun to see your reaction. This is probably my favorite version and performance of this beautiful song. I never grow tired of watching/listening. Stunning.
Stunned is an understatement. Somehow I missed this jewel when it was first performed by Disturbed. I went from classic rock music to alternative 30 years ago, for the new, fresh feel that it had. I have been a fan of Disturbed since The Sickness was debuted. I am a child of the 60s, and this song is one of my favorites from that era. You have to have a set of major cojones to even attempt covering a classic of this stature. After watching it a dozen or so times, with my jaw in the floor, I started looking the reactions of vocal coaches and other 'unwary" listeners. To my great pleasure, I realized that everyone has near the same "Stupefied" 🤘reaction that I did. Who knew? David has control, power, and range that stands head and shoulders above any other vocalist today. Disturbed has made my band 😎bucket list now...
This is one of those pieces where I truly believe that regardless of your expectations going in (whether you know of or like Disturbed or not) you come out surprised and thoroughly entertained.
part of that nasal quality in David's voice you were talking about, in this case specifically, was there because he was sick at the moment of that show. His performance was still absolutely impressive! He made that song his own.
Jen, I would love to see you compare this live recording with the studio/music video version. I really do not know which I like better sonically, but the music video is awesome too! Smiles from New Orleans!
From what I've head of Disturbed, not a lot, but also quite a bit and definitely well enough, he always seemed to me like he's got a very nasal singing voice. That's his style.
Yeah so glad David performed that night, he was going to skip because of how sick he was but they convinced him to perform if he sat on the chair... amazing amazing performance
I highly recommend watching down with the sickness!! Gives a look at what disturbed is truly like. An makes you appreciate what he did with this song that much more! Love the videos ❤
Ms. Glatzhofer, your analysis is excellent. I am old enough to remember the original played on the wireless, but young enough at heart to appreciate the interpretation of time. The power of the human voice can change your life. I worked with a brain surgeon who asked me why do think your brain is in your head? I was puzzled by the question. I admitted I did not know. He replied it's the fastest conduit to your mouth. What you hear and see can be expressed almost instantaneously. This is one way he would assess brain function by the ability to communicate verbally. I learned a lot by listening to you. God bless you from West Texas.
David Draiman ....one of the best male vocalists on the planet Imho. A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to vocal fry/distortion and back on a dime. He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful tonal properties to it! Loved your reaction Jennifer.
As i said in some other Reaction Videos to this Masterpiece: Simon & Garfunkels Version was a gentle Warning, this Version by Disturbe on the other Hand is a stern Indictment

I love this version and consequently I journeyed further into discovering Disturbed. I actually like their more metal songs too. I originally discovered them when I watched the original video when it popped up on UA-cam. Their interpretation of the song and its meaning to the band is incredible!!!! One of my favorites music videos of all time! I’m a 73 year old Grandma!
Without a doubt, this is one of the best reviews I have ever seen. I normally don't like frequent interruptions, but for some reason, your elucidations on the song were magnificent.

Great reaction video. I've watched so many reaction vids on this song - can't get enough, and Jennifer seem authentically surprised at what she was hearing.
That was one of the most technically in-depth reviews I’ve seen …….you explained it so well ………It was well over my head but still great 😂😂 absolutely brilliant cover as well
Oh Jennifer! I LOVED how captivated you looked watching this performance, especially at the very beginning. David Draiman is just amazing and he takes us on a journey with this song and his power is unequaled in my opinion. I am not a metal fan (more Gordon Lightfoot , Home Free and for that matter, Simon and Garfunkel) but this cover was the foot in the door for me to explore Disturbed and although my taste is not for a lot of their music, there are quite a few of their songs bordering on the harder sound that I have come to love but this cover is in a class all by itself. ❤
You don't have to worry about his voice. He's been doing this for like 28 years now and you can judge for yourself how clean his voice still is even though almost every song they do is full on grit
Jen, this was a fantastic reaction - thank you! This was the song that introduced me to vocal coach reactors years ago. I saw Disturbed in concert in 2019, and they sound just as good in person. They have dozens of great songs, I hope you try a few more out when you get the chance. I discovered Home Free this year, and realized that I apparently like country music more than I thought I did. I became a Home Fry after the first song! In fact, they are the reason I found your channel. 🙂 Can't wait for your next reaction!
Disturbed is proving something I randomly said 20 years ago, "Just because I don't, doesn't mean I can't". A Thrash Metal band, singing a deeply melodic song.
Your reactions are priceless, and very entertaining, plus, you pass along your knowledge in an easy to understand way. You are a salesperson as well. I checked out that glassesUSA place you mentioned in your recent Voiceplay video and ended up ordering a pair of sunglasses last night.
This is one song that always sends shivers down and up my spine. Great analysis as usually. Keep working on expanding your vocal texture. I'm rooting for you.
He really lays down the full meaning of the words here. Paul Simon was way more subtle, but this is definitive. The song will never re-cover from that performance.
As a male with a reasonably deep voice, I tried your comment about letting it go through the nose and mouth and you're spot on - it not only sounds right, it feels right! Edit: Subbed!
Always fun to watch these vocal coach reactions to DISTURBED The Sound Of Silence. First two thirds of the song: lots of vocal coach technical comments Then at 12:20 OOOMMMGGGG!
This was the first radio single Disturbed did that was "softer" ... it actually freed them up to release more emotional type of songs, and explore that side of their craft. I've been a fan of Disturbed for 20 years or so at this point. They're definitely worth a deep dive :D
First time I heard this was at the beginning at a 7 hour drive, and it randomly turned up in spotify, and I just went WTF just hit me! And I spent the rest of the drive with this on repeat. Love watching the reactions to this, especially when David really gives it the beans towards the end, absolutely fantastic!
Glad to see you reacted to this! David is truly a master of his craft, and has one of the most recognizable voices in modern music. If you want to check a similar vocalist (who actually had some vocal training/coaching from David), look at Matt Heafy of "Trivium." I'd recommend their songs "Beyond Oblivion" or "The Sin and the Sentence."The band is heavier than what you may be accustomed to, but all of the members are incredibly talented. Plus, Matt's ability to go from a harsh vocal to a clean one (not just in a studio!) is fascinating. Recent subscriber, really enjoy your content! Even with a lower-set voice, I'm learning quite a bit from your channel. Thanks!
14:10 to me the shift out of distortion in "tenement halls" suggests a gentle and reverent respect for the poorest people mentioned, for families struggling and deserving of quiet and peace...it's genius. Especially after the anger directed at the powerful and eloquent just previously.
I have watched a lot of reaction videos of David Draiman's rendition of "Sound of Silence" and it's interesting to watch the moment when Simon and Garfunkel's original is unseated by Disturbed's version.
Love the reaction and your surprise as David moves through the song. Fully appreciate the stops and explanations which are brilliant and so clear. Loved the slight rewinds so that we weren't missing anything and getting a repeat of your point. Sometimes though I like to appreciate your reaction to the song as much as the technical analysis. Thank you
This is one of the "mandatory" songs for vocal coach reactions. Another is Queensryche "Take Hold of the Flame" (live in Japan 1984). Geoff Tate is a beast on vocals, unparalleled for his time. Get ready to hear some amazing notes. Also if you like Postmodern Jukebox with Haley Reinhart, you have to hear her and Puddles Pity Party doing "Mad World." Puddles has a spectacular voice that will shock you.

Thank you for another great video. Always great to have a 20-30 minute slot of fun in the day!! Always love how you explain and give examples of how certain sounds are made. My dogs usually look at me like Im an idiot making some of these to test them LOL. As many have mentioned, David is an amazing vocalist, huge range and supreme comtrol. Keep up the great work miss !
This version is amazing! My favorite version of this song. Great reaction Jennifer 🙂 You mention our being fortunate to be able to listen to so many different things. That's why I follow a select few music reactors, you included. Found some great new things I didn't know I'd like! For something completely different, you might want to try LiSA singing Homura in the First Take series sometime. First Take is a great series. In this case, if you check it out, I recommend turning CC on for English subtitles.
Paul Simon really showed genius by writing this but with the harmonies of Art Garfunkel it was almost to beautiful to capture the serious warning of the song. I feel like David really captures the feeling intended in the lyrics with his distorted growls and dark tone. He took this song to a new level.
Hi Jen, love your reactions. If you like you could listen to Henk Poort's version that he performed on a Dutch TV show called Beste Zangers. Henk being a classical trained singer had to learn to use distortion safely so he could perform this song for Floor Jansen of Nightwish
Lovely reaction! I love that you go into more on the metal side. Metal has so much interesting aspects! David is a very accomplished vocalist! And this version that Disturbed did I like better than the original. I think it gives life to the lyrics with the appropriate heaviness and emotion.
Yeah loved this reaction I am definitely subscribing you genuinely seem like someone that would be one of my friends. You seem like a really cool person I'm very genuine.

There have been many covers, but IMHO this is how the song should be sung, bringing out the pain of the words, the rawness and hurt of the soul.

Thank so much!
get chills everytime i listen to this song, just love this rendition to the song...Loved the reaction as always...Thank You 😊
Ooh, wah-ah-ah-ah!
"I'm not prepared" 🤣 yep welcome to disturbed 💯
Lovely reaction! I love that you go into more on the metal side. Metal has so much interesting aspects!
David is a very accomplished vocalist! And this version that Disturbed did I like better than the original. I think it gives life to the lyrics with the appropriate heaviness and emotion.
So glad you 'tried' Disturbed. I can't remember what point it was but I got goosebumps.
Melissa Cross trained David for a very long time and specifically in the healthy employment of vocal distortion, her speciality.
I found your channel today and subscribed to it today and I ❤ love disturbed version of sounds of silence.
I’ve watched about 20 vocal coach analysis videos of this song…your review and comments are brilliant. You are very talented!
Yeah loved this reaction I am definitely subscribing you genuinely seem like someone that would be one of my friends. You seem like a really cool person I'm very genuine.
They also do an incredible cover of Sting's If I Ever Lose My Faith in You. I think you would really enjoy it.
Ohhh loved this! Really looking forward to you analyzing more of Disturbed's songs
Maybe some of their own works like Are You Ready or Never Again!
Or ‘A Reason to Fight’. Or ‘The Light’ for a little more rock, but not too heavy to jump into. He’s such a great vocalist
