25 Essential Rules For Life From Marcus Aurelius

  • Marcus Aurelius was born to a prominent and established family, but nobody at the time would have predicted that he would one day be Emperor of the Roman Empire.
The emperor Hadrian was nearing death and chose Antoninus as his successor, with the condition that he adopt Marcus. And in 161, Marcus became the Emperor and ruled for nearly two decades until his death in 180.
Marcus Aurelius held the most powerful position in the world. The adage that power in absolute absolutely corrupts has been repeated throughout history for a reason-it unfortunately tends to be true. But as the famous historian Edward Gibbon wrote, under Marcus, the last of the ‘Five Good Emperors,’ “the Roman Empire was governed by absolute power, under the guidance of wisdom and virtue.”
The guidance of wisdom and virtue. That’s what separates Marcus from the majority of past and present world leaders. Just think of the diary that he left behind, which is now known as his Meditations: the private thoughts of the most powerful man in the world, admonishing himself on how to be more virtuous, more just, more immune to temptation, wiser. Those thoughts are now a landmark of Stoic philosophy that have guided some of history’s greatest men and women. For good reason.
    May they too guide you.

Remember: you watch and hear this video (or others) every day because you constantly need to rekindle your inner flame. You constantly need to add fuel to it, to keep it alive, bright and warm. It is the flame on the top of the highest building in your Inner Citadel. It enlights everything. And it can be also the light that may guide other people around you, with your example. That's why your hear and repeat these words, that's why you write your journal, that's why you keep theese words on your walls. Keep your flame alive. Keep it bright.

Your perspective is well-reasoned, and it's clear that you've thought deeply about the implications of this Stoic principle.
Your emphasis on adopting a solution-oriented mindset, particularly in professional or political environments, is a valuable takeaway. It's a reminder of the importance of being mindful of our words and attitudes, even in seemingly private moments. This aligns well with the Stoic philosophy of maintaining inner integrity and virtue, regardless of external circumstances.

@@quotesenglish Very well said. I have read books by Gary Zukav, Michael Singer, Ekhart Tolle, etc. They and the Stoics feel very much like kindred spirits. If one cannot connect with the aforemention, then consider revisting the Stoics. So much needed wisdom there is "anchored" there. I frequently visit the two "camps".

Watching this video was like diving deep into the profound wisdom of Marcus Aurelius and the timeless teachings of Stoicism. Ryan masterfully deciphers the essence of Marcus's meditations, reminding us of the importance of character, the impermanence of external accolades, and the significance of our internal compass. It's a stark reminder that even an emperor grappled with universal human struggles, emphasizing the importance of self-reflection and the pursuit of virtue.

This philosophy has vastly improved my life.
    Thanks,
Had some fun with AI and thought I would share:
Write a song based on the phrase "Disciplined in the Art of Stoicism"
    (Verse 1)
In a world of chaos, I stand my ground,
Disciplined in the art of stoicism, I've found,
Through life's storms and trials, I remain serene,
In the face of adversity, I keep my inner screen.
    (Chorus)
Disciplined in the art of stoicism, I stride,
Embracing life's challenges with a heart open wide,
With wisdom and courage, I face each new day,
In the stillness of my soul, I find my own way.
    (Verse 2)
In the shadows of doubt, where the tempests may brew,
I find strength in silence, in what I construe,
For storms will pass, as all things must do,
I stay firm and resolute, my spirit anew.
    (Chorus)
Disciplined in the art of stoicism, I stride,
Embracing life's challenges with a heart open wide,
With wisdom and courage, I face each new day,
In the stillness of my soul, I find my own way.
    (Bridge)
I'm a master of my thoughts, my emotions in check,
In the midst of turmoil, I remain architect,
Of my destiny, my choices, I am the sage,
In the book of my life, I write my own page.
    (Verse 3)
Through joy and through sorrow, I remain composed,
In the face of temptation, I stay firmly enclosed,
With a heart full of virtue, I chart my own course,
In the grand tapestry of life, I find my own source.
    (Chorus)
Disciplined in the art of stoicism, I stride,
Embracing life's challenges with a heart open wide,
With wisdom and courage, I face each new day,
In the stillness of my soul, I find my own way.
    (Outro)
Disciplined in the art of stoicism, I stand tall,
In this journey called life, I give it my all,
With resilience and grace, I walk through the night,
In the art of stoicism, I find my guiding light.

Such a great overview and dive into an inspiring mind. All of these are gold, but really love the focus on doing what you do without expectation of anything beyond the deed. Reminds me of the quote from Kamal Ravikant: "If there is one lesson I've learned from failure and success, it's this. I am not the outcome. I am never the result. I am only the effort." ... all we can do is the work we do. If we give it our all because it's something we NEED to do, this is all we can ever do.

  • @CGillSP
    @CGillSP 7 місяців тому +2

I agree with the principle of not complaining. I think this quote is saying something a bit different. Marcus Aurelius specifically calls out “about life at court” in this quote. Previously, you cover not complaining with “focus on process, not outcomes”, “Premeditatio Malorum”, “fate behaves as she pleases” and “handle failure with indifference”. Many of the stoic principles circle not complaining. In this video, you called out that Marcus Aurelius didn’t speak much about happiness because it was obvious. Marcus Aurelius did speak of finding poetry in ordinary things. If we extend this logic to complaining, then his example is about avoiding being over heard complaining “at court”. In many of our lives, life at court is life at work. I believe Marcus Aurelius was warning us not to have a problem mindset at work or in other political environments where our words can be used against us, but instead have a solution mindset. Even in muttering to ourselves. Even when you you think you’re alone at work, you’re never truly alone.

We assume that we are more intelligent now People have been and have had a source inside of them. Our understanding of our existence seems so separate from everything. The obstacle is the way. Look at everything around you and see how you perceive it. Is it what makes you? Or is it what you make it you? Find your balance!
