Marcus Aurelius held the most powerful position in the world. The adage that power in absolute absolutely corrupts has been repeated throughout history for a reason-it unfortunately tends to be true. But as the famous historian Edward Gibbon wrote, under Marcus, the last of the ‘Five Good Emperors,’ “the Roman Empire was governed by absolute power, under the guidance of wisdom and virtue.”
The guidance of wisdom and virtue. That’s what separates Marcus from the majority of past and present world leaders. Just think of the diary that he left behind, which is now known as his Meditations: the private thoughts of the most powerful man in the world, admonishing himself on how to be more virtuous, more just, more immune to temptation, wiser. Those thoughts are now a landmark of Stoic philosophy that have guided some of history’s greatest men and women. For good reason.

Oh dear Mr. Holiday, I saw something today and guess who it made me think of? Ha! The sign I saw said, "Don't just say that you have read books. Show that through them you have learned to think better." ~Epictetus Don't even think that you're not reaching people with the stoics, you are indeed. Many blessings to you and thank you dear one.
Full quote for anyone who may be interested: "Don't just say you have read books. Show that through them you have learned to think better, to be a more discriminating and reflective person. Books are the training weights of the mind. They are very helpful, but it would be a bad mistake to suppose that one has made progress simply by having internalized their contents.”― Epictetus, The Art of Living: The Classical Manual on Virtue, Happiness and Effectiveness
May we all have the discipline to practice continuously that thing we want to bring to this world and make it look effortless in all the opportunities we get to demonstrate the fruits of that hard work!
Perfectly put. Thanks for the encouragement.
I read Meditations two years ago. I have read it again three more times and yes, every time I get a new understanding, a new clarity, I appreciate the deep, humble and powerful wisdom of that extraordinary man, the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, someone who ruled the world and left it a better place for all of us, two thousand years later, by this private journal of his. After "Meditations" I read "The Discourses of Epictetus", Seneca's "On the Shortness of Life" and these have changed my life, in a way I never thought possible. The only regret I now have is to have discovered these doors to happiness and fulfillment past my 50's. But, on the other hand, what remains of my life will surely be way better than the previous period of it. Thank you Ryan Holliday for your efforts, your dedication.
Thank you Mr. Holiday
Thanks. After the week I've had, I really needed this video.
Thanks so much Ryan this is exactly what I needed at this time in my life.
You are fantastic my friend. Thank you so much. Memento mori!
So very true! Thank you!
Hmmmm. I must have been a stoic as a kid. Just started delving into stoicism this year, and a lot of things Ryan said is something I’ve been thinking/doing since childhood.
Thank you so very much for putting this in so many hands.

Thank you for this

As a practicing Stoic what does one do if someone is pushing you into a corner to fight?
While my philosophy isn't purely stoic, and your question is vague I will offer my best advice and mantra: You deserve what you are willing to tolerate. If someone is mistreating you, it is your responsibility to address it. You must take the leadership role in this and your primary goal is in setting expectations. Have a conversation with this person, let them know their behavior is unacceptable. Often times this is enough, and when it isn't distance can be the best solution.
i need to get reading
“They would do a post-mortom, and they would learn from that! And that’s great; for everyone but you!” Really caught me off guard omg 😂😂
Thank you sir, may I have another?
Awesome

Recap by Tammy AI
Hello ryan ! Thanks for your content.
i have a question:
Is there something you DON T agree with marcus Aurelius and his book? Any point or any book ?
Thanks
Do you own that bookstore? I've noticed you post several videos from there.
Yes, he does. I can't remember where it is. Austin?
The Painted Porch in Bastrop, TX
"It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor." - Seneca
What if there were required material that a president needs to read before a political party can nominate an individual for office. Constitutional law is not a sufficient depth needed for a leader. You must also include public speaking, philosophy, and ethics.
I also want to add my family motto... "Fato Prudentia Major" which means "Prudence is greater than fate"
Is it 12 or 10? Only 10 subtitle screens are present in this video. I'd guess the title is a typo.
I just want to be a better dad and leader no matter your background!
I only counted 10 fundamentals, why is the title 12?
💜
Well, that’s debatable.
Nature vs nurture.
The title of the video promises 12 fundamentals, but the video delivers 10 fundamentals. That can be corrected.
Message great. Visually, graphics look like AI and not so great.

Lesson 1 is know 10 not 12
Edit out your “Rights?” You’ll definitely sound better!!!
right? 🤣
Maybe it was just Maybelline
It sure as shit ain’t Maybelline.
Thinking of Bill Clinton rereading Meditations is hilarious to me. Oops Juanita broaddrick got to reread Meditations, oops Monica Lewinsky got to reread Meditations, oops Paula Jones better reread Meditations, another authorized unnecessary bombing got to reread Meditations. I imagine him in Dantes inferno in the 6th circle rereading Meditations in that blue dress with the rest of the Epicureans.
bro 20 fuckin ads is not chill
It is a bit much ngl. Cheapens the message.
Hmm I got only 2... maybe he read your message..
like the work overall but Holiday is sanitizing stoicism for a 21st soy audience
unfortunately, he couldn't pick a worthy successor or teach his son to be even 10% as good as him. :/
I'm studying stoicism, but I prefer be a slave.......
I studied his meditations since college 50 years ago . When I was converted to Christ I realized what a hypocrite he was for persecuting and killing innocent non violent Christian’s cause they didn’t offer incense to him .
All these things that you are going to tell the public, Our Holly Prophet "Hazrat Muhammad PBUH"told us 1400 years ago, and also Holly Book "Qurran Al Karim" teaches us about virtue and wisdom as well as humanity. That's why Holly Prophet PBUH is the great leader of all our the world. We should follow him and then should compare with others.
