  • The Stoics say that character is fate.
Stoic ethics were grounded in rejecting the valuing of external things and focusing instead on valuing our reason and choices in the pursuit of virtue (arete, or human excellence) alone. Their emphasis on the building of character left shining examples in the lives of the great Stoic leaders, who continually strove to have their traits of character reflect the four cardinal virtues of temperance (sophrosune), courage (andreia), justice (dikaiosune), and practical wisdom (phronesis).
In this video Ryan Holiday defines 9 key methods that the Stoics used to build character that will help steer you toward a new destiny.

Gladiator is one of my all time favorite movies, I like one interaction between Maximus and Marcus Aurelius, when Marcus asks Maximus "what is Rome?", And Maximus answers: "I've seen much of the rest of the world. It is brutal and cruel and dark, Rome is the light".
I think that is an analogy of our own character, the world is dark, people are shady and lacking morals, we can be the light that guides them to live a virtuous life, not by preaching, but by being an example ourselves.

I found Ryan on a normal day of my depressive slump when I was 16, and I thought "What could this guy be talking about?" and then fast forward today I'm 18 and i've been reading Ryan's books (Discipline is destiny, The obstacle is the way, Stillness is the key, Daily Stoic and he also convinced me to read Marcus Aurelius Meditations which is also life changing) I can say that Stoicism is a philosophy worthy of attention; it truly is life changing. Not even my anti-depressants can reach the level that the philosophy of stoicism have brought meaning in my life, once again I thank you Ryan for introducing to us this obscure yet life-changing philosophy.

This is beautiful. You are wise beyond your years already, even having been OPEN to this idea of this kind of self improvement. My son just turned 15, and I’m trying to encourage him to start listening to worthy role models instead of just blindly consuming empty or silly content (me too actually!)

I find stoicism very interesting but hard to implement in my every day life. Do you have some instances where you can see a tangible difference in how you view/live your life with a stoic mindset as compared to before? Or is it just more of a gradual change?

Bro you gotta check out Cajun Koi Academy. (he helps students to become better at studying and become a better productive person)
Also he has this topic about building your Habits.
      he says;
The first step in building habits that last is not ' choosing an outcome ' to get but CHOOSING A CHARACTER TO BECOME.
(Ryan Holiday is also talking about CHARACTER here in this video).
I came across to that Cajun Koi Academy video yesterday haha and i just want to share it with you. I hope it helps. Goodluck on your College Journey. ( me also.. i'm returning to college after almost 7 years).

@@tayarai8425 “The Stoics were a school of thought in ancient Greece that emphasized the importance of reason, self-control, and living in accordance with nature. One of their beliefs was that death was not something to be feared, but rather, something to be accepted as a natural part of life. They believed that after death, the soul would be reunited with the divine fire from which it originated, and that there would be no consciousness or sensation.
This idea of death as a dreamless sleep was also present in Roman philosophy, particularly in the writings of the poet Lucretius. He wrote that death was simply a release from the sufferings of life, and that there was no reason to fear it. Early Christian theologians also adopted this idea, with St. Augustine writing that “death is nothing but the sleep of the body.”

#1 favorite stoic concept I've come across in my whole journey:
Man must welcome everything with AFFECTION. Marcus tells himself this in his Meditations.
When we begin to have compassion and AFFECTION for everything fate brings us in this life, we fundamentally transform our perceptions and therefore experiences of even the most negative and insidious things.
With this rational weapon by our side, nothing can distract man from his innate purpose and mission to contribute to a cause larger than himself.

We are all connected, it reminded me of a quote on a show called life backbin the day. "[voiceover] We are none of us alone. Even as we exhale it is inhaled by others. The light that shines upon me shines upon my neighbor as well. In this way everything is connected. Everything is connected to everything else. In this way I am connected to my friend even as I am connected to my enemy. In this way there is no difference between me and my friend. In this way there is no difference between me and my enemy. We are none of us alone."
