Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor, born nearly two millennia ago (121 - 180). Marcus became the Emperor of the Roman Empire in 161 and ruled for nearly two decades until his death in 180. It is important to realize the gravity of that position and the magnitude of power that Marcus possessed. He held one of-if not the most-powerful positions in the world at the time. If he chose to, nothing would be off limits. There is a reason the adage that power in absolute absolutely corrupts has been repeated throughout history-it unfortunately tends to be true. And yet, as the essayist Matthew Arnold remarked, Marcus proved himself worthy of the position he was in.
Marcus has only one core work, which was actually never intended for publication: his Meditations (originally titled “To Himself”). This is not only one of greatest books ever written but perhaps the only book of its kind. It is the definitive text on self-discipline, personal ethics, humility, self-actualization and strength.
In this video Ryan Holiday pulls 50 rules from Meditations that can change your life.

Since I found stoicism I have reflected so much on my life. I sometimes think how I would like more people and as said in this video the people in power, but I realize not everyone wants philosophy, not everyone wants to better themselves, not everyone has the 'time' or maybe they just haven't reached a point in their lives that they will be open to learn and reflect on themselves in the same ways I have since picking up books like meditations, dokudo and in some ways the 48 laws of power. to keep learning, and to keep growing thank you for another amazing video.

Wonderful video, thank you, Ryan. Loving these videos on the Daily Stoic. What this series teaches me is that Roman and Greek civilizational achievements should be celebrated and studied and imbibed by the West today, where society is becoming increasingly rudderless, oversensitive and bent upon identity politics and the draw of comfort or exploitation.
These videos are a window for the rest of the world into the culture of a high civilization, characterized by how seriously a person could take themselves and their role in society, the world around them, and their responsibilities to themselves and to others.

I personally find posthumous fame sublimely beautiful even though Marcus Aurelius isn't around to enjoy it himself or had any control over it. There are billions of interconnected threads starting 2000 years ago that are helping people to this day to live a more authentic character driven life. The interconnectedness also runs from past to present to future. His legacy is alive and the philosophy is still speaking to people. Thank you for these educational videos full of Stoic wisdom.

This though has really got me thinking properly and asking questions to myself.I am going to buy myself a copy of "Meditations ",even though I will have to read everything twice so it sinks in.Stoicism has given me meaning about life again.

Really well done! But my perceptions at 4:24 led me to double back, say "Did I just see that?", to discover that yes, it's there. "Keep to your own standarts." What I can't figure out is whether you and your production team missed that, or intentionally seeded it in there to make sure that OUR perceptions, in real time, were retaining their razor edge. I've been teaching on YT since 2007 and recognize a true searcher and gifted teacher when I see one. Onward!

Ryan, I’m currently reading The Obstacle is The Way & I ordered Ego is The Enemy. I have read Meditations by the Great Marcus Aurelius. I have had it since I was a teen. I can’t snap out of it, I also suffer from anxiety however I have better control of it since I have been reading stoic philosophy. I’m in pain right now, because I just ended a relationship of 6 years. I wish I didn’t feel this pain. Stoicism does offer clairity, however I do understand life will be life. I just want to be more disciplined, the way I was when I was in my late teens in the Marine Corps. This week alone, my gym closed for good, the relationship ended, & I’m struggling with my mental health. I just want to be a better version of myself. If you could offer some clarity, please do.

There was a time when I would start my days with a meditation/reading from the Bhagavad Gita and some of the works of the author Thich Naht Hahn's body of work, or the first non-occidental philosopher Nobel Prize winner- Ravindranath Tagore's body of work, but I have found that some of these classic stoic works provide a great alternative "school of thought" to some of these other forms on non-occidental philosophy.

    TLDR: list them
I apologize for any confusion. As the video does not explicitly provide a list of the 50 rules, I am unable to provide you with a comprehensive list. The video discusses various themes and ideas from Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations" without providing an itemized list of specific rules.
    ok list those
I apologize for the misunderstanding. Here are some of the themes and ideas discussed in the video from Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations":
    1. The power of having no opinion
    2. The importance of recognizing what is essential
    3. The role of philosophy as a medicine for the soul
    4. The three disciplines of perception, action, and will
    5. Seeing things from a broader perspective
    6. The importance of caring about one's craft
    7. The resistance and the need for self-discipline
    8. Setting your own standards and not seeking external validation
    9. Taking action in the present moment
    10. Embracing the concept of memento mori, the awareness of death
    11. Doing what is right regardless of popularity or reputation
    12. Accepting and working with obstacles rather than resisting them
    13. The connection and interdependence of all human beings
    14. Understanding the ephemerality of life
    15. Being a lifelong student and continually learning
    16. The importance of self-reflection and self-improvement
    17. Understanding that fame and external validation are not the ultimate goals
    18. The importance of focusing on what you can control
    19. Being prepared for challenges and sudden attacks
    20. Accepting the impermanence and uncertainty of life
Please note that these are not an exhaustive list, but rather a summary of the main ideas discussed in the video.
    finish
Here are some additional themes and ideas mentioned in the video from Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations":
    21. The value of self-discipline and self-control
    22. The practice of forgiveness and not holding grudges
    23. Accepting the inevitability of death and the transient nature of life
    24. Being present and fully engaged in each moment
    25. Cultivating a sense of gratitude for what you have
    26. Not letting external circumstances define your internal state
    27. Embracing obstacles as opportunities for growth and improvement
    28. Seeing the interconnectedness of all things and practicing empathy
    29. Recognizing the insignificance of external validation and fame
    30. The importance of taking action and not procrastinating
    31. Finding meaning and purpose in life through philosophy
    32. Accepting the imperfections of the world and focusing on personal improvement
    33. Embracing the concept of Amor Fati, love of one's fate
    34. Humbling oneself and not getting caught up in self-importance
    35. Recognizing the power of acceptance and surrendering to what is
    36. Practicing simplicity, modesty, and restraint
    37. Letting go of attachment to outcomes and focusing on the process
    38. Embracing the interconnectedness of past and future
    39. Appreciating the beauty and transient nature of life
    40. Remembering that wisdom and virtue are the ultimate goals in life
Again, please note that this is not an exhaustive list, but rather a summary of some of the key themes and ideas discussed in the video based on the context provided.
    finish
I apologize, but based on the given context, the video did not explicitly provide a complete, itemized list of the 50 rules from Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations." can be lethal
or source of life long regret and misery...
Any classical Concert Musician trains that...
I study and train this now for many years -
it slowly emerges as something miraculous...

I recently bought a spanish translation of Meditations($15 aprox) and it changes some things from what I read on the Internet, the words are a bit more archaic and the vendor sold it to me as a "more faithful translation" which I started to really like.

What amazes me about Marcus Aurelius is that, he was quite literally, the most powerful man on Earth at the time (if we exclude the emperor of China), but he was talking about being modest and not believing the hype. He was literally a god on Earth, but he somehow managed to see through the bullshit.

I am powerless over others, except in the exercise of physical force or the application of incentive and punishment. In the desire to control others I sacrifice the privilege of being truly in control of myself. I become subservient to the passions and actions of others in the pursuit of power over others. Of such delusions life consists, if it can be called life.

Marcus Aurelius is also known by many as a persecutor of Christians, in large part due to the record of John Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, which states, “Marcus Aurelius, followed about the year of our Lord 161, a man of nature more stern and severe; and, although in study of philosophy and in civil government no less commendable, yet, toward the Christians sharp and fierce; by whom was moved the fourth persecution.
“The cruelties used in this persecution were such that many of the spectators shuddered with horror at the sight, and were astonished at the intrepidity of the sufferers. Some of the martyrs were obliged to pass, with their already wounded feet, over thorns, nails, sharp shells, etc. upon their points, others were scourged until their sinews and veins lay bare, and after suffering the most excruciating tortures that could be devised, they were destroyed by the most terrible deaths.

Don't fool people, Christ and Christianity didn't even exist in the times of Marcus Aurelius and other Stoics. Stoicism is 300 BC year old which is way older than Christianity.
