Nobody is born with a steel backbone. We have to forge that ourselves.
We craft our spiritual strength through physical exercise, and our physical hardiness through mental practice (mens sana in corpore sano-sound mind in a strong body).
This approach goes back to the ancient philosophers. Every bit of the philosophy they developed was intended to reshape, prepare, and fortify them for the challenges to come. Many saw themselves as mental athletes-after all, the brain is a muscle like any other active tissue. It can be built up and toned through the right exercises. Over time, their muscle memory grew to the point that they could intuitively respond to every situation. Especially obstacles.
In this video Ryan Holiday outlines 12 ways that Stoics can build a strong mind and a strong body.

One of my things. . . .Don't tell people your good ideas because they will either tell you it's a bad idea and make you second guess yourself or they will tell you it's a great idea and you will get that praise without doing any work. Both of these things will stop you from acting out your goal

    1. Focus on what you control
    1. (2.*) Ask these questions every day: Is this in my control? Is this essential? What is the worst case scenario (premeditatio malorum)?
    3. Persist and Resist
    4. Be willing to look foolish
    5. Focus on choices
    6. Control how you respond
    7. Cultivate freedom
    8. Seek Discomfort
    9. Think about the cost
    10. Run your own race
    11. Put it all to the test
    12. Celebrate internal wins
    Great video, thanks Ryan!

Just found out my partner of 3 years was cheating on me with my best friend of 4 years. Been turning to your videos and others to help get through it. I don't think you can plan for anything in life. I used to think I could prepare for any scenario, but some things you just don't ever expect to happen. I never thought the two people who I thought cared and loved me could easily betray me like it was nothing. I want to pour the hurt and betrayal energy into something positive rather than self hatred.

I really like the fact that this channel has an actual real person doing it. I have looked at quite a number of Stoic channels, and most seem to just be AI (you can tell by the weird pronunciations of really basic or common words) spouting out stuff. It is great to have a real person with real experience sharing real thoughts. Having a computer 'teaching us how we should behave' seems a little dystopian to me.

This approach harks back to ancient philosophers. Every facet of the philosophy they crafted was aimed at reshaping, preparing, and strengthening them for forthcoming challenges. Many viewed themselves as mental athletes - after all, the brain is a muscle like any other active tissue. It can be built up and toned through the right exercises. With time, their muscle memory developed to the point where they could intuitively respond to every situation, particularly obstacles.
This describes a natural and adaptable process of personal and mental development. Instead of merely acquiring knowledge, they focused on developing critical thinking skills and acuity. They valued the cultivation and expansion of their own abilities, making them resilient and ready to face any challenge. This serves as a valuable reminder of the importance of investing in self-development and cognitive abilities, not just the accumulation of knowledge.

Great video, Ryan... the whole focus on control is a continuous challenge as we're so engrained to pursue so much that it's hard to let go-but it's so important we do. And the focus on how we respond is so key, too; we cannot control much in life, but to some extent we always get to control that. Hard, though; a constant battle.

I guess it's time to buy Ryan Holidays book catalog. I was introduced to Stoic philosophy and didn't even know it. Inread the Enchyridion in a lock down rehab facility about 8 years ago. I was jailed for around 11 months in total that year 6 of those months were in that rehab facility. A great man handed me the Enchyridion. I read and re read that book and had no clue what stoicism was. Found Ryan's content a couoke years back and recently I added stoic philosophy as part of my faith/spiritual practices. This works.

I found it I kept trying to conquer this big mountain and I wanted to make it to the top or should I say I had to make it to the top at least I thought that was what it was all about but then I realized I'll never make it to the top My mental challenges won't allow me to make it to the top but I said to myself a long time ago this mountain is very very tall and I might not ever make it to all the way to the top and be able to be perfectly content with everything around me and everything would be perfect I said as long as I'm climbing it I don't care how tall it is anymore as long as I keep climbing it and from that day on I realize that it doesn't matter if you get all the way to the top It matters if you keep trying to get to the top mentally and physically if you don't have mental you will never have physical! Really I'm very serious That's all you have to do is tell yourself no matter what I'm going through I'm going to keep climbing some things I'll overcome some things I'll never overcome but I'm just going to keep climbing I'm going to keep climbing and I'm going to keep climbing that's all you got to say thanks

Hi Ryan, Can you please tell about what can victims do in a world driven by power and money where they are silenced? Justice is only attainable when there is somebody willing to hear or stand by the truth which seldom happens in real world. Society puts very low value on the life of a person and I have been confused about what to do in the face of injustice as it makes life meaningless, feeling vulnerable at all times to other people's actions and living with its consequences.

    • @KSchism
      @KSchism 8 місяців тому +4

The sense of freedom comes from within. The Stoic looks at what one can and can not do. Life is no more and no less meaningless than it has ever been. If watching media is overwhelming and making you feel helpless, then stop watching it. Focus on yourself and where you can make a difference. Even volunteering at your local food bank helps the community. Watch more of Ryan’s videos. This sense of being overwhelmed is many times exactly what he’s talking about.

In a realm untouched by time, where dreams floated like luminescent fireflies, there began the tale of a curious seed, vibrating with cymatic potential. The gentle winds of destiny, ever-watchful guardians of this ethereal land, took the seed under its vast wings, whispering tales of far-off worlds and secrets of existence.
First, the seed came upon the ancient Oak, its gnarled roots deep in history and crown brushing the heavens. "Little traveler," the Oak rumbled, "stand strong and steadfast, for the storms of life test our mettle, shaping us into legends."
The willowy grace of the next guide, the Willow, danced in fluid harmony with the world. "Life's rhythms might push and pull, but swaying to its tunes, you'll find your dance," it whispered, branches moving like a conductor's baton.
A radiant Magnolia, petals bathed in moonlight, awaited next. "Shine brightly and share your essence with the world, dear seed. Like my blossoms, be a beacon of hope and beauty."
The Pine, cloaked in an evergreen aura, offered its wisdom: "Even in the harshest winters, persist and thrive. Adaptability is the hallmark of greatness."
Upon reaching the Birch, the seed learned of rejuvenation. "Life is a series of cycles. Embrace each new beginning and shed the weight of past sorrows."
The Elder, laden with berries that held tales of epochs gone by, counseled, "Listen to the echoes of antiquity, for in past tales lie future prophecies."
The towering Redwood imparted a lesson of camaraderie: "In unity lies unmatched strength. Stand with others, and together craft legacies that span ages."
The ephemeral beauty of the Cherry Blossom, though fleeting, was poignant. "Cherish every transient moment, for in its brevity lies its true worth."
Finally, in the embrace of the ethereal grove stood Emilia, the Eucalyptus, exuding an aura of enlightenment. "Dear traveler," she breathed, "every encounter, every whisper of the wind, has molded you. Now, root yourself in the wisdom, find your unique place, and bloom."
With newfound understanding, the seed embarked on its life, becoming a testament to the profound journey it undertook, a beacon for all who sought wisdom.
